Hell yeah, great to get a dedicated in-depth tutorial from our man Defyn! I've been notching Fox-3's slightly better but thanks so much we appreciate it!
Wow as a newer player to top tier, this is the most in depth, comprehensive guide to fighting at top tier that I’ve seen. I’ve spent tens of hours researching and trying to understand how to play/ defend against these things and now I fell I have understood. Don’t normally comment on videos but felt I had to on this. Well done and thank you
8:05 ive found that when notching and dropping 2-3 pops of chaff at a time in random intervals, the missile is slightly turning into the chaff briefly before going back to lead pursuit on my plane- effectively making it travel a greater distance while also turning more rlcreating drag and slowing it down. Makes it a lot easier to outrun/ outturn it
17:42 - targets that have clear sky as background gives Pulse Doppler no ground returns as reference point to filter out, thus any decent radar set becomes unnotchable unless chaff is involved.
A wonderfully educational video with defined terms within. This video does not exclude a single audience and I applaud you for that. Thank you for putting this out there:)
That last part when defyn mentioned that you have other ordnances really relates to me. I just got AIM120 some minutes ago with F15C and while i grinded it most of my kills were with aim9m. Lots of people got so focused and stressed facing fox 3s that they forgot that ir missiles still exist, they just didnt flare. Easy splash.
Happened to me the other day in my F-14B, got uptiered to 13.0 and had a missile fired at me head on, was confident it was an AIM-120 only to realize too late that it was an AIM-9M and I hadn't bothered turning my afterburner off when I turned around
Defyn is a masterfull virtuoso when it comes to painting. That SU-27 at 8:45< is made in such a way that blinking makes it wobbly. So much talent required to create such a powerful illusion. Truly impeccable piece of art.
Very helpful video, I knew some of this already but the strategies with altitude and cranking are really good to learn! Got an Ace in the Gripen A yesterday so IR-missiles are definetly still useful lol
The last point about IR missiles and guns is super relevant. I've gotten a ton of IR and gun kills lately. Its like people are so focused on Fox 3's the rest of their brains stopped working.
I feel the opposite I’ve been launching 9ms in scenarios where I would always get kills before fox3s came out and now I just die to the fox 3 every time and my missile gets flared. Given I probably shouldn’t be using ir missiles in headons
This is super helpful, I feel like I've been playing for thunder for a while that Top tier and have a decent understanding of radar, but having this breakdown really helps with the learning experience
Very well done video. You explained conplex concepts well using similes and analogy. You may not get the most views with these videos but they are very helpful. Ty defyn
also, for cranking, losing some altitude while turning to the gimbal limit also forces the missile to turn more as it decreases in altitude and as it enters thicker air, while you retain your speed in a turn as you fly down. this makes the missile turn down, in addition to turning left or right, while flying into thick air. And if you then use the gimbal limit to turn in the other direction, it bleeds more speed before finally turning cold (but that's not recommended unless you have some distance to maneuver before the missile reaches you, otherwise, crank and go cold).
Incredible video mate. Not only works for WT. It works for DCS World too. Currently flying the F-16C there and i killed two bandits last time using a couple of this techniques so. Thanks a lot!
btw regarding multipath you can enable the radar altitude display in the settings which shows the altitude of the plane based on the ground and not the sea level it helps when you try to use multipath as you can also define a minimup altitude so the radar altitude display goes red if you fly below that altitude
I want to note, for 9:05, that yes most PD radars will usually not have a problem with zero speed closure rates, not all radars can lock targets at zero closure speed (in all conditions). The F-14s radar most notibly suffers from zero speed clutter. How in the world you'd ask, that's because of sidelobe returns. When flying low to the ground, the ground right underneath you has a strong enough return (from your radar sidelobes) to clutter the 0 m/s speed region. The ground underneath you is essentially always moving with you at the same rate. Most modern radars do not have this clutter at all, it's just turned off in their code (I guess they filter these out using radar altitude data realistically speaking). In the case of the F-14, it's about a +/- 60 m/s region from zero speed you can't lock when cluttered, going to higher altitudes of course helps reducing the clutter. F-4J/S (and the Speys) suffer from the same issue, as well as radarsets with the MTI mode, maybe some other ones as well.
Hey thank you for this guide, even though I was familiar with radar (or so I thought) and have like 1500 games at 10.3+, this was real easy to understand and I loved watching it. Real useful.
Having just ground out the IRIAF F14, this was invaluable, understanding that you still have to keep a bit of a lock with the AIM54 until they can guide themselves, explains why I was not getting any BVR kills at all, I was literally Firing and Forgetting
Defyn my dude, your animated infographics are insane. I remember when it all started with sideway silhouettes of props and the explosion emoji 💥now you animate radars and flight paths (edit even each missile's own silhouette too) . You's a man always improving, someone make him stop!
Gonna watch this knowing full well Im still gonna get smacked out of the air by these new wall hacking missiles even after using terrain masking to defeat them (literaly happened)
Trying to learn how to fly the Squadron Sea Harrier, and keep dying to missiles repeatedly at altitude, and at low-level flight it's a deathtrap too. If I turnfight, I'm dead from BnZ. If I BnZ, I die to Radar Missiles. Trying to learn how to fly it effectively given the changes since your last video, hell, it's been moved up 2 BR notches n all. I try, and thanks for keeping up the guides.
the thing that i did not understand is when it comes to notching 9:29 do i have to like notch the radar missile itsef aka( ARH missile ) or the jet that is locking me?
I have a question, if we all like dogfighting in top tier planes, wouldnt It be a good idea to make another gamemode like ARB (df) (doghfight) so we can have idk maybe higher multipath or whatever like duels? so we can play again dogfighter planes like the f16 A
Anyone else noticed after reduction of the multipath that the WT trees are like 120 meters tall? I was flying a mirage today and was using the cockpit radar altimeter that displays exact height from the ground and when I finally reached 60 meters (when the ground protection of multipath starts), I was like in the middle of the height of average tree in the map ...... 120m trees (like 400 feet) is probably too much for a tree :D
