    Lovely message at the end of this video, Nora. I also love that it doesn’t matter what the yarn cost, or that it was hand-dyed by unicorns (meanwhile my current project is hand-dyed boucle yarn 😉). All that matters is how nice the knitting and the construction is and how well it fits you. This is a hobby that we will hopefully enjoy for a long time. I don’t think I need to spend all my disposable income on it.

    I love a good thrift find! Never found any good yarn where I live but have found some amazing pieces of clothing. My new inspiration is Lisa from Lisa Makes and her unraveled thrifted sweaters (machine knit). She has found some chunky 100% cashmere sweaters that are out of style and she turned it into a fantastic new sweater. Yes, it's a lot of work to get to the yarn but the result is so worth it.

    The cardigan is gorgeous! If at all possible, I always knit flat panels or sleeves two at a time. I find it so rewarding when they’re both done with no sleeve island needed! I find it helpful to keep telling myself, “yarn comes from the right at the start of the row on BOTH panels,” to remember when I need to turn the fabric for the next row.

    Love your hair today!
    Also, when I’ve knit the fronts of a cardigan two at a time, I always put a special stitch marker/ progress keeper on the left side (or whichever side you make first). It can be a little tricky to keep it straight in the very beginning and is helpful if the cables are mirrored as a visual cue. Also, it helps keep things straight when you get up to the armhole and neckline shaping since there’s usually lots going on at once.
    Just wanted to add that I thought it very clever to knit it at a tighter gauge to get a smaller size without making the fabric too stiff 👏

    • @akaNoraKnits
      @akaNoraKnits  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you!!! That is such great advice-I so appreciate it! I actually really love playing around with gauge when in between sizes!!! It’s the best way to customize my fabric and still get the fit I want!

    The ending of this video was so sweet! Got me thinking about my "dream yarn" and honestly I just want to keep trying all the acrylic yarns I can, I love knitting with acrylic yarns so much and I just want to try more! Though another "goal" with yarn I guess would be someday I want to knit a sweater with Hobbii Kind Feather, I tried it with a pair of socks and LOVED it so I'd love a sweater (or 2...lol) made with that yarn

    Nora, chickennew knitter here. I'm amazed by how advanced you are in such a short period of time. I find that I only pick patterns (just a sock knitter now with aspirations of a sweater) that have a corresponding TH-cam tutorial because I'm so afraid I won't understand the pattern/stitches. Can you talk about the resources you use to help you navigate patterns as a new-ish knitter? Who or where do you go when you don't understand or have made a booboo? Thanks so much! You're the perfect accompaniment to my Saturday morning coffee! ❤

    • @akaNoraKnits
      @akaNoraKnits  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      Well hello!!! I have had so many people ask a question similar to this and at first I felt like I had nothing really to contribute because I genuinely don’t have a formula or resource that I go to time and time again. HOWEVER, you just made me realize that I definitely can articulate how I navigate my way through the scary stuff and which patterns I feel comfortable trying and which I don’t! So I will definitely work on putting that into a concise video for y’all!! 💛

    I had the exact same problem the first time I knit short rows! (Japanese short rows on the Luna Tee.) I figured it was a beginner mistake/something that someone more experienced would know how to interpret, but I still wish the designer had been more precise. I couldn't find anyone else who had had the same issue, which was frustrating. Wrote a big note on ravelry to remind myself for the future and to hopefully help someone else! All this to say that I always appreciate when people leave detailed comments on their project pages, the nitpickier the better 😊

    Always knit my sleeves two at a time I then don't need to stress about making them the same length. I knitted the Folklore Cardigan for my daughter, I cast on New Years's Day, knitted it in secret while she was at school (when I wasn't working), and finished with 4 1/2 hours before the Taylor Swift concert in Melbourne. Still no buttons yet. Your cousin will love it.

    I always hope when I check ravelry projects that they will mention the issues they had when knitting, even if they are "silly". Because if I am struggling with some part of the pattern and I don't find anyone having that issue, I figure I am the issue (which could be!) but it seems like there's no help ahah ALSO, it would be great to have thoughts on how that specific yarn combo works up in that pattern, and any modifications. I find most people barely write anything on ravelry, but I wish they did.

It takes me a few months to finish a sweater. I wish I could go faster, but your message at the end of this video reminded me that these projects are more than a finished object. They are also a process that allows me to slow down, invest in my creative self, and ground myself in each moment of the making. Thank you for the reminder. 🩷

    Happy Saturday! I enjoyed today's episode while knitting up some of my (also coveted and very pleased to have splurged on) Noro Madara into a Terazzo Sweater. Louisa Harding, I believe, is a British designer. Many years ago, she was an inhouse designer for Rowan Yarns. I always wanted to make her designs but could not afford the yarn for at the time. I bought it to make a crochet blanket and I am much more interested in knitting sweaters and there are sweater quantities of each color and all neutrals so Im excited to use them seeing people projects made with them. For the cost it’s going to be epic for my typical cost. You are absolutely teaching me that I can have awesome sweaters for much less money than I typically spend. You have such a practical outlook on knitting, and I particularly love what you sometimes say about imperfections being part of what makes knitwear special. So much goodness in this!
    Thank you for the link-a-money idea. I saw a product last week that’s a stitch marker with a soft ruler attached for measuring your progress without stopping multiple times. I’m totally using what I have now.
    Spit splice? Is that when you use a needle to basically felt the ends together?
    I’m using the thick and quick version of wool ease for my first knitting project - a chunky sweater. I like this yarn too. I’ve had to frog and tink several times as I learn and it’s holding up very well. I am saving the fancy yarn in my stash for after I’ve done a few projects.
    The little pops of color in the new yarn are fun! I never knew I needed that in my life until I recently crocheted a cowl with variegated speckled yarn. Each new speckle was a “ooooh” moment. 🎉

    • @akaNoraKnits
      @akaNoraKnits  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you! I saw the same and would maybe grab one if I saw it in a shop, but am I happy to use my link-a-monkeys for now!
      Spit splice is even more simple--using water (or spit) you add the liquid to the palm of your hand and then rub the two ends together like you're trying to start a fire. The liquid and friction felts them together super quickly and then there are no ends to weave in!
      This is my first speckly yarn and boy is it fun!!!

    I knit the Sari Norland's Kutaar top in 2 at a time style. That lace was pretty intense and I didn't think I'd want to do it twice lol! It makes the project a little less portable as you'll gave two balls of yarn on the go and don't want to get tangled. I did the panels all on one long cord, but you could do the panels concurrently on two separate needles if you have a spare set. The project will move slower as you go, but it's so nice to finish both panels at the same time and you can just join in the round when you are done. Good luck!

I have a stash of lovely expensive yarn but my most worn and favorite knit was the Harvest Cardigan by Tin Can Knits out of $2.00/skein Caron Simply Soft that I bought on Amazon when first learning to knit. Or perhaps your eyebrows are arched differently? What I’m trying to say is (while you always look great) it looks like you did something different & you look gorgeous, darling.
    Fantastic find on that Louisa Harding yarn. Oh I’m slightly jealous. The color, the yarn content- my goodness that yarn seems dreamy! Awesome find, way to go! What a great journey you have taken us on. I appreciate each video you curate for us. Take care, Nora. Have a great week, Anna.

      It even appears to have shrunk, right?? I love a good side by side for that reason exactly!!
      TS Cardi--such a treat to knit the body of a sweater at the size of what would normally be a sleeve for me!!
      I did pop in a few highlights and I am CONSTANTLY changing the way I do my brows 😂 Thank you so much for noticing!!!

    Man, same thing happened to me recently. Started a cardigan and when they got to W&at for some reason I got sooo confused. I was way lazier than you tho just omitted them all together 😂 the mindful needles are the only interchangeable needles I have a couple sizes of and I have a snag on the join😢

    I'm having the same experience with my current knitting as you are with the Sand cardigan. Confused from the beginning. 🤔 At this point I'm just hoping for the best. And there are no projects on ravelry or Instagram. I think I'm the first one knitting the pattern. Good luck with your cardigan 😊

    There is a Block on ravelry that allows private notes. I make mine on that, and then when I'm finished, I modify my notes for Publix notes. This way, the pattern integrity is ensured, but I also provide others with useful information

    Hey Nora! I love watching your videos as a relatively new knitter like yourself, you always encourage me to go with the harder techniques without fear :) Though I am a massive Swiftie, I’m not planning to knit the folklore cardigan but I think it would be easier for you to put the spreadsheet on Google sheets and create a link to share it, so that anyone with the link can view it :) then you can always link it in your videos and Instagram bio without having to email it to a lot of people.

    Another great podcast!!! I think you are describing german short rows in the pattern you were having trouble with. I am wondering if you are having trouble with your double stitches created by this short row method. There are lots of video tutorials on germen short rows. Hope that helps.

      I love a german short row--so I know that it was not this. The short rows were made with YOs? Never seen it before and the result is not bad, but it could have benefited from a better explanation

      @@akaNoraKnits it would be nice to know how much time you find for knitting. It’s fun to see the numbers for your finished projects when they are done. Having an idea of how much time you spend knitting each week would be another interesting number to know. 🙂 this has me thinking I should try tracking the amount of time I spend knitting each week. I feel like i knit a lot but it takes me awhile to finish projects. That’s the problem with having way too many WIPs at once 😆

If it’s about the Caron Blossom yarn, I feel like I haven’t washed and worn it enough to say just yet. I gifted my sister the sweater I had made in the yarn before and she has yet to wash it too. But I’ll definitely keep you updated as I do wash and wear!!

      @@akaNoraKnits ohhh so sorry! I was referring to Folklore. I was thinking you used the Lion Brand Wool Ease as in the pattern! I’m trying to find out through Ravelry users how that is holding up. I might go with my gut and spend a little more and get wool. I’ve used the acrylic for blankets and it doesn’t wear well with use ☹️

    I just have to pop in to say I got the swivel cables in two lengths. I wouldn't recommend these for thin yarn knitting for beginners. There is a slight glitch which makes you have to push the stiches on your left needle forward. I have arthrtis and this is a problem for me. However! If you knit with thicker yarn this might not be a problem. Depending on what you knit I would recommend you get these cables for 80 and 100 cm to begin with. Depending on the project these are good to to have in the toolbox.

    Commenting only partially through the video: when reducing the back panel by 4 stitches, is the back of the sweater the same width as the sweater you're referencing? Is there any worry that removing those 4 stitches is going to affect the seaming of the sweater?

    • @akaNoraKnits

      As of now, I can't imagine it will affect the seaming but I suppose we will find out when we get there! I am getting as close to the dimensions of the reference sweater as possible without compromising the integrity of the cables and overall structure of the garment---I hope! Hahaha

    Ok I hope this isn’t too forward and doesn’t assume that you don’t know something you actually do - if you get cold sores a lot like I do it’s worth asking your doctor about something called “valacyclovir” - if I feel a cold sore coming on I take one dose as soon as I feel it and one more dose like 12 hours later, and it doesn’t even have a CHANCE! It’s changed my life.
