I have an orange Cube 60 from the '80s. It's a great amp. I use it for the same kind of clean tone you'd find in a Roland JC-120 -- it's practically like half of that Roland amp. The Cube 60 has a Distortion knob, so you can crank that part up if you really like the solid-state distortion tone, which as you say is its own thing. For jazz, I like to have a lot of headroom, which means playing with the volume low, so the more power the better. It would be better if it was a Cube-100 or -200 ... but for more situations this amp holds up pretty well. I'm not a reverb fan, but it's a real spring reverb in there, and that's something.
It's a fantastic amp, but it's surprisingly heavy. I think part of it is that the handle makes it less comfortable to lift than some other amps or speakers. The newer Roland Cubes are like feathers by comparison and also sound good, but not nearly as distinctive as the older models. You do get more stock effects in the newer models though.
Hi Jack.. New channel? Well, I am #116.. nice to meet you.. am looking for an amp and came across one of these.. agree with you about the Jazz applications of this sounding the best... your demo is making me think more seriously about buying the one I found, so thanks much. Hope your channel does well as you continue to evolve your presentation. So far so good!!! All the best to you... ^_^
Sounds great. I saw a picture of Allan Holdsworth and EVH on stage and there was one of these. I had bought a current one for my Goddaughter to play through, now I want a vintage one. Smooth Jazz stylings.
Hi! Thank for this video. I'm looking for one of this amp to use whit my electric keyboard, a Hohner Pianet T. I know that a keyboard version of this amp exists but it's very rare... As I see something that seems to be a Rhodes, I guess you know about electric keyboards, do you think the amp will work great with electric keyboard? In a dreamy world, could you do a quick sound test? ✌
I think this would work for a keyboard amp in a band context, but it lacks a bit of low end for solo work. If you can find the bass or keyboard version that would definitely sound great!
Nice demo. I just got me an orange ss cube 60 made in japan. Ver cool, but I'm struggling to get that jazz tone out of it. My guitar is a MIC 2008 epi standard with daddario NYXL 11s. I wonder what strings/gauge you have on the white jazz box? You have a wonderful musicality to your playing. Really enjoyed your playing. Thanks!
Nice little amp, Randy Rhoads used one. Bought the Cube 40 new back then ($200+???) from L&M Toronto then got a Hiwatt custom 50 head and JCM 800 Lead cab in 1985 for $700. sold the Hiwatt head like an idiot for $250 in 1990 to pay debt. Recently bought a cube 40 orange again!
Hey Jack! I hope you're doing well. I have a question about my Roland Cube 40 amplifier. The front covering on the left lower side is torn, and I'm wondering whether you recommend leaving it as is or getting it reupholstered? I'd appreciate any advice you have on this. Thank you!
How many inch is the speaker? Was thinking of getting this or the 60 watt version of it, but then again Peavey Bandit and Tech 21 Trademark can be had for cheap as well.
No it was affirmed by measuring my particular unit, the preamp gave a very poor frequency spectrum response. It was the 80’s , one unit could be okay, and the other might be bad
The Roland clean tone is its own thing, for sure. I love the whole Roland Jazz Chorus tone, and these old orange Cube amps nail that -- minus the chorus, of course.
I have this great quality amplifier, Roland Cube 20 and I really love using it! Great amp, the clean and built in override! Thanks for this video! 😊✨
Glad you enjoyed it! The Cube is a fun little amp for sure!
Thanks for did this vídeo man! Great sounds from this amp!
It's a great amp honestly!
Just bought one from eBay. Can't wait to try that little amp. Overdrive sounds quite nasty...❤

Half of a jc-120 is a great way to describe it!
So that would make them 200 and 300 lbs😂😂?

Totally agree!

It's a surprisingly good sounding amp!
I have an 80’s orange 60. Also a later grey one. The orange stays- selling the other. Big difference. Tele for jazz.

I use flatwound strings on my hollow bodies. I'm a big fan of LaBella strings for those, but Daddario Chromes are great too!
Treble all the way down, middle at 9'oclock, bass at 12 o'clock,

That's a wild amp journey! A Hiwatt 50 is on my list of amps to try / build at some point.
I like the older Japan-made Cube amps better than the new China ones.

you can often fix a tear with some well placed superglue, unless a big chunk of the tolex is missing.

This one has a 12” speaker
Hey Jack im looking at pictures of the amp and on the back it says pre out, main in. Is that an effects loop or if not what is it?
It's more for sending a signal to the mixing board or another amp
@@jackpaynebassist Okay thanks for answering
You can use that as an effects loop. I have used the pre out to the mixer, which is pretty nice.

wats the name of this riff pls and thxz
Just some random 12-bar blues in E! Nothing too fancy.
Hi what make is the big amp behind the Roland?
That's my Fender Princeton (reissue) that I re-covered in seafoam green tolex. It's since gotten a cane-weave grill too!
Bought a Cube 40 in 1986. Rubbish but couldn’t afford a decent amp. Still using the power amp though for amplification at Home
