- Hello You Tube, it’s Rob from Maxwells Grass Cutting Services, based in the North East of England.
In this video I want to discuss jobs that need to be told No. It has took me a long time to learn that some jobs carry too much risk.
I look forward to reading your comments and feedback.
Thanks for watching. Please like and subscribe.
Remember, when the green gold is growing, keep mowing.
All the best.
Rob.
Thank you for watching and supporting the channel. Please like and subscribe, this allows me to grow and move forward. Your support is appreciated.
Take care.👍
One of the hardest words to learn to use but a must in business, is NO.👍
Absolutely! All the best.
Thanks Rob. Enjoy the lakes. Need to see that Wetherspoon’s next time I’m there.
It’s great 👍🏻
hello rob, love your videos... always agree with them, never get too close to customers, they will drop you in a heartbeat (as i've grew to learn)
They certainly will.
I am 53 years young. I was asked to climb down an eight foot wall and trim an overhang. Landed on my back - time to say no now and again. P,s my back is still sore ! Yes Rob, we are tired - and it's not even August ! Secretly looking forward to mid November, cuban cigar, pipe and slippers. Keep going pal, you are an inspiration.
Me and you both Mark.
100 per cent correct.. on a hiding to nothing with re turfing for sure.. over seeding is bad enough! You are completely at the mercy of the customer.
I agree ☝️
Had a customer yesterday ask if I could cut some overhanging branches which I agreed to, then they asked if I could do it that day. I said I don't have the tools with me, they then asked if I could go home get the tools and come back, I couldn't believe it! Then I politely explained I've got three other jobs to get to on that day and they looked like I'd just killed their cat or something. I ended up fitting them in the next day only for it to rain after I'd done it messing my schedule up so now I'm working Saturday morning.
Going to put my foot down with customers from now on.
People are unbelievable.
I've had problems with turfing jobs to Rob going back sorting spots for free 6 weeks after the job was completed, more hassle than there worth, keep er lit Rob have a great weekend 👍
Thanks Jonny, I hope you’re well.👍🏻
Did a major scarify and seed on small lawn a good few weeks ago. Customer ( nice fella) querying the bare patches, etc. Today i bought a cheap sprinkler for him to borrow - emphasing the necessity of watering- previously instructed. It's the magic ingredient 🤓🙄
Fingers crossed. 🤞
Look forward to your videos Rob. You are bang on with everything and so refreshing to listen to someone in the same boat. My husband and I have been running our gardening business since 2005. We are based in Teesside. We haven't taken on any new customers for @ 5 years. We have more than enough and like yourself we are no longer doing turfing or high hedges. The job is hard enough and getting harder as we get older. We have a fantastic group of customers and wouldn't change them for the world. Enjoy Keswick and keep those videos coming 😊
Thank you , appreciate your kind words.
Im a window cleaner . Been using ladders 18yrs ,pole 10 . I used to do gutters no problem with ladders . I dont touch em with a barge pole now . Ive got a phone number of a local gutter vac company and pass that on . They will charge them earth compared to my old price but i wont do them under any circumstances or cash .
Been on the ladder 20 years and I don’t mind the gutter jobs, done 4 this week beside each other-repeat customers ..it’s a change and a nice wee add on!
I totally understand
I am 59. Been doing this job for two years. This video is pure, unfiltered WISDOM! Thanks, Robert. We need to hear it from the MASTER!
Thank you .
You'll laugh Rob, But once I did a turfing job and told the client to water regularly, (It was a hot May) he asked how much and I said you can't water too much, and too much is better than too little. I came back to check on it a week later and do a roll (I used to do a roll and 1st. Cut as part of the package when I turfed). I stepped out and promptly sank. He had left a sprinkler on it 24/7! Sometimes you have to be careful what you tell clients who are not gardeners.
Some people.
Good for you Rob, some of mine do my head in and there on thin ice .
Cheers
Keep up the good work rob love watching the vids
Thank you Alan.
I literally just got in from viewing a potential lawn renovation. I told the customer I've finished with lawn renovations until early spring now. I get in and your vid pops up. How strange is that!!
Anyway. Have a good break Rob. Me and Mrs Better Lawn 4U are away ourselves from 6th Aug. Looking forward to the break!
Great minds and all that. Enjoy your holiday.
Totally agree with your last video.
I'm 57 and decided I need to look after myself because money isn't everything and I can't do dome jobs that I use too.
Me and you both, all the best.
Great video. Glad you’re getting away with the boss for the weekend… Keep up the good work.
Thanks 👍
I have a customer who has 20 square meters of lawn that's full of moss and weeds. I've advised her of what needs to be done and that I may be able to do it in September. This week, I turned up, and she came out with a small box of lawn restorer 😂 NO I never applied it, I just explained again what her options were 😂 have a good weekend Rob
Thanks Gary.
Completely agree with everything you said there Rob. I'm 58 and been gardening for 18 years, I do still climb on top of conifer hedges and cut the top- but I know my worth and charge good money for it. And no I don't think I'll do any more turfing.
Thank you Andy.
I'm in the same mind as you Rob about keeping it simple, i'm 55 on Monday and have been at this game nearly 30 years full time , 6 days a week and stupid long days ,i'm taking it a bit easier from now on
Many happy returns for Monday.👍🏻
Spot on...have a nice time at the lakes Rob!
Thanks Nick.
So right. Did a returf a few ago and the customer watered morning and night. It looks fantastic. And yet I've done returf on a patch about 10sq m and she left it. Most of it died and she blamed me. I give up. Great series of vids.
Thank you .
I try to stick to cut more blow 😮💨 myself. Big up from Scotland brother
Thank you , all the best.
That Spoons in Keswick is defo one of my favourites along with the Palladium in Llandudno.
Cheers 🥂
Very good informative video, I love watching these.
I have a elderly customer who in lockdown broke her back and she has a small lawn smaller than the one in this video with some borders that need weeding each visit mainly just bits of grass and bindweed, I only visit fortnightly for an hour at a time mowing and edging is 15mins and 45mins of manual weeding and deadheading bits. How much would you charge as I am curious.
Marc
Edit: I’m happy to let you know what I charge once you reply :)
£30.00
It’s your business, your price.👍🏻
Spot on Rob,as you get older you have to manage your body, health is wealth 👍
Absolutely
Enjoy Catbells Rob.
And the lovely Keswick Spoons!!😊
Thanks! Will do!
Great chat Rob, thanks.
Hope the map reading goes ok. Don’t forget to mag te grid 😂😂
Cheers, looking forward to it.👍🏻
I recently did a lawn care service for a regular customer. It is 70% weeds (dandelions). I laid down a fertiliser with weed killer in it. This created patches. I then spread top soil alongside some cultivated seeds. I told the customer they will need to water it every single evening. I go back 2 weeks later and the entire lawn is dead. Dead. I was gobsmacked and couldn't help blame myself. I want to get the lawn looking amazing but I know they will never water it. What would you do?
Sometimes we have to admit defeat.
I dont have that problem as i tell my customers to get a firm in that only do lawn renovation and feeds etc.
Cool.
Its got to be right for us, days are well gone for charity work(all work for little pay)not good giving it balls to the wall all the time.
Enjoy your trekking chap.
Well said, thank you . 🙏
Love the content. Enjoy the lakes!
Thanks! Will do!

Thanks Geordie, all the best.
Rob I’m a gardener of 30 years plus I stopped doing turf and lawn treatment 10years ago so much hassle
Pleased you’re still going strong.
Mow ,blow ,go it's only way
👍🏻
I want to work for you, I’ve started my own business in on my own and want to join you and learn with you
🙏 thank you
As I keep saying to you Rob your business your decisions to make buddy I've been up you're way this week to Washington have a fantastic weekend buddy
Cheers Wayne, hope you enjoyed Washington. 😂
You are most welcome Rob and lovely friendly people I found in Washington too Rob
I had a bob the man wass called harry it should have been £300 but I did it for £70 that's very fur right and very stumped because no Garrdener will do it now
Lots of busy fools.👍🏻
Hi Rob got a question about the stihl 650vm mower you have . (I have the same one) . is there an oil drain plug on it or are you meant to turn it sideways + empty the oil out when you change the oil? .
I use an oil pump from Briggs’s and Stratton. Sorry I can’t help.
@@maxwellsgrasscuttingservices no probs . seems it has no drain plug . I tipped the oil out , gave the blade a sharpen as well .
Once returfed my lad's lawn, about killed me, never again.
😂
With u on the turfing.. again I suppose it depends on the customer.. if it's a small job and no large trees or overhang or weird shapes, perhaps.. but like you I am pretty much done with turfing, so much aggro, problems, little to no after care, customer keep on your case, you don't need it
I agree. All the best.
Ive said this 10 times we are the same person 😂as I get older I keep it simple
Very wise.
In my time I have also been a green keeper on a golf course and u really do no your grass Rob fair play and yea it’s ridiculously busy at min spring grass growth non stop 😮
Cheers Matt, all the best.
Had new customers trying to tell me how much they are going to pay and when I can arrive I still have the time wasting customers trying to play mind games to get me to break I still say no.
Good for you.
@@maxwellsgrasscuttingservices Yrs if you don't put your foot down with customers they will carry on dragging you down.
Yea, NO more massive hedges has in being tall & very wide. To texting on the body, I'm going to pull the pin on the ones I have when I hit late 50's. Green gold 🤑
Good luck Simon.
I rob I had a bad customer I did a good job and got 20 pound and then 4weeks later a know man came and did a bad .job and ie got 40 pounds wate the ell
Oh dear. 😅
You won't need a map for Catbells 😂 😂😂 👍
I love following the map. Drives the wife nuts. 👍🏻
@@maxwellsgrasscuttingservices yeah, use the map then 🤣🤣🤣
Sometimes, you make more money by saying no.
Very wise.
I dont think telling them no is a good idea. I always say that i advise them what i would do. If they then insist i just say that im sure someone will sort it out for you but I'm too busy at the moment
A good point.
Quote them 4k and employ 2 18yr olds go move the turf.
😂
why does your top have hayter on it? random i know
Got a hayter t shirt and decided to have it embroidered maybe?
An old shirt I bought, had it embroidered.
Spot on.
Moan blew and go only joking rob love the videos .
It’s not moaning it’s sharing experiences.👍🏻
