+mojopin 70 I agree !!! I find it hard to listen to the later dire straits after hearing this early stuff . The band just wasnt the same after David and Pick left . This is the pure raw stuff
@@aliceroberts4808 Especially after Pick left. I know nothing of drumming, but those that do say he was very good. Listening to Terry Williams vs Pick, yeah I can see Pick was more solid/creative. Terry seemed rather run of the mill. As much as I appreciate the starkness (and for me, the true Dire Straits sound) of the first two albums (which include David), I think the addition of Alan Clark was brilliant, as his piano prowess is phenomenal (listen to Telegraph Road).
I keep listening to their debute again and again, sometimes i dont listen to it for a few days and then i go back to it, its surreal how can a band start their carrer like this. Truly incredible
Disagree with never matched ! All of their albums are gems ! Have you ever listened to Love over gold ? Q magazine had called it the Rembrandt of rock music
On all of the dire straits videos I’ve watched everyone talks about Mark’s amazing guitar playing but I don’t see no love for his VOICE! This dude is a bad ass!
WOW, I never thought I would like a band so much like I like Dire Straits. I have been listenin these songs for ever and everytime i tune it, it sounds new again, everytime i tune it, i hear something dif in marks guitar.. Amazing!
I glad to rediscover the music of my youth. I followed Mark 's daughter (didn't know that was his daughter) and rediscovered such great music. Beautiful.
That's cool and hell ! does it swing ! Swing is gonna live forever with such youngsters. Mr. Knopfler is one of the great guitarists we are graced to listen to today.
Your six blade knife can do anything for you Anything you want it to One blade for breaking my heart One blade for tearing me apart Your six blade knife-do anything for you You can take away my mind like you take away the top of a tin When you come up from behind and lay it down cold on my skin Took a stone from my soul when I was lame Just so you could make me tame You take away my mind like you take away the top of a tin I'd like to be free of it now - I don't want it no more I'd like to be free of it now - you know I don't want it no more Everybody got a knife it can be just what they want it to be A needle a wife or something that you just can't see You know it keeps you strong Yes and it'll do me wrong Your six blade knife - do anything for you
Couldn't agree more..Marks lyrics are fantastic..I worked in Soho in years gone past..the words of Walking in the wild west end..take me right back there..I saw exactly what he's singing about...gives me goosebumps..
the part after he says "you know i dont want it no more" followed by the sound of the guitar. if that's not the perfect sound to illustrate what its like to be 21 or 22 i don't know what is . that's youth perfectly captured in music .
The guitar players among us will notice that Knopfler seldom, if ever, uses the trem bar on his Strat during fills or solos -- a technique so crucial to the style of David Gilmour or Jeff Beck. Instead Knopfler uses the trem bar, as far as I can tell, only to "shimmer" chords during atmospheric intros or endings. (Like I do.) In fact, at the end of this song, you'll notice Knopfler manipulates the neck of the guitar to slacken the pitch of the chord, rather than use the trem bar to achieve the same effect -- like he's playing a Les Paul, SG, Tele, or other guitar without a trem bar. I've been a rabid Mark Knopfler aficionado since 1978, and a guitar player, and I've never noticed this until now.
i think that the song is about the guitar.. (6 strings) expression to love. hate. passion,, even addiction about playing the guitar.. or love.... everybody got a knife,, a needle,, a wife,, something you can't see!!!
Everything was so sincere then... Just the four of them; no touring musicians, no synthesizers, no '80ies baby-boomers to satisfy. Imagine the laid-back vibe there must have been at these gigs!
Knopfler is voicing the vocal melody line based on a different harmonic interval than the album version here. I'm not entirely convinced this live version sounds better than the album version.

As a guitarist the 5th Dire Straits or should I say Mr Knopflers song I fell in Love with.....for its simplicity and the key change.....so good to see them when I was 11....
les années passent vite ! LOVE OVER GOLD !! plus que jamais à appliquer pour l'avenir de l'humanité et de la planète ..merci Mark Knopfler et toute l'équipe
Thank you for this HD vid!!! I'm totally agree with Blakelin26, a lot of videos diseapear and removed from YT! But this one exist for the moment, so enjoy the wonderful music of Knopfler!
This concert should have been a live album, one of their best early performances
Incredible audio quality for the time.
Totally agree with you, the sound of this concert is amazing, the way they're playing is so cool
Absolute masterpiece. Knopfler definitely has the feeling and groove.
Fantastic. To go back in time to created moments like this, priceless!
I Agree that
Wich one ?
There is definitely no other
If he did not have his skills to be there then, you would not be able to make a comment "now". If he had not been, you would not be.
I've had this album since I was 12 years old, its hands down one of the greatest albums of all time in my opinion....

Never

@@RedMissou, it's raw and unvarnished. Later albums suffered from overproduction, along with a different rhythm section.
You can never tell me otherwise. The lean, clean, sparse, bet yet perfectly timed guitar leads on the first album are gold.
45 years later, still gives me the chills
Me too
What a gem this debut album was ! Still sounds so fresh to date ! Unique
i play this every night before i go to bed just to restore my faith in music
Still playing it??
No, but thanks to your comment I am watching it again now :D@@william_coduks
This aged really well
Our friend Vince plays sultans of swing everyday morning without fail.
Playing as I try to sleep now. Keeps me from being depressed, but also gets me fired up and ready for whatever lol 😵💫😵🫠🫠🫠
Listening to it in 2020.
Still have the cassette!
This is my favorite concert!!!!! I cannot get enough!!!!

One of the best performances of Dire, without any doubts!
Same here. One of the best guitars ever.

Agreed, especially when u take a break and then put them on again. Mind blown

Quarantine and good taste in music Brought me here
Excellent color in the voice and Excellent color on the guitar...Mr. Knopfler
Most underrated bass line of all time!!

Yeah, I've decided. This is my favourite song. Just can't get enough. Should be longer. Same with Down to the Waterline
