Definitely true. I think both Pick and Marks brother, David, contributed an immense amount of talent to the band. How Mark saw fit to part musical ways with Pick and David is still saddening event.
His guitar playing in the beginning perfectly conveys sense of calm hidden spiteful anger smoking just below surface. After 5 years of listening to his man I still can't get over how soulful his music is.
Early Dire Straits are unique and unrepeatable, and M.Knopfler is a true genius of musical composition, for sure, as well as a master of fingerpicking! We're lucky for being able to enjoy them❤

From a time that is not sooo long ago, when musicians only needed to be musicians and not stars....when a band not only played its songs but also felt them as part of their undeniable creation. How not to miss the days we could go to a gig and leave the place mesmerized and knowing we had witnessed life as life should be.
I remember coming back from my second deployment to Korea in January 1980. I heard Sultans of Swing for the first time and was blown away. Couldn't believe I never heard it overseas. Been here for 44 years now....
It's a short list. Mark, Rik Emmett, Randy Jackson (zebra) and Frank Marino (Mahogany Rush) come to mind as my favs in the rock world for shredder/Singers.

No one in the history of live music can finger pick a great guitar melody and then transition to a strum whilst not loosing the melody from 4:12 to 4:31 MK picking interlaced with strumming and then back to finger picking, genial
the way Mark plucks the strings and then strikes the chords during that stretch at the end is seriously one of the most badass guitar playing clips I've ever seen. just unbelievably awesome.
Mark is always exceptionally brilliant, but for the total effect on Communique and the two earlier albums, it still helped a lot to have his little brother, who can read him perfectly, out there keeping his own Strat busy. David K's contribution at this stage of DS's development needs recognition too. Not surprising he grew tired of being thought of in Mark's shadow (although being a Shadow with a Stratocaster can be a very good thing).

I don't know much about finger picking and strumming playing guitar, as I never played guitar. But I grew up with Dire Straits, I was 14 when I got their Communique album and other one. Mark may not have best voice out there with so many great voices in 80's. But, his guitar sings better than any of these. What I think about their albums and especially this song, is that it is masterpiece. You can see that he grew up with guitar. Its not only his guitar playing, but melody is amazing. You can listen it over and over and never bored again. Their live performance is like studio redording. Pure soul music. This quality seems so simple when you listen, yet its so hard to achieve. Band sounds like one. Everyone plays fantastic in band.
Uhm, from a woman's perspective his body is still hot. He's lean, but still has a nice body. Wide shoulders, long legs. And his brother too. Both guys have nice bodies.

It is so sad that - in my generation - everybody is listening to Justin Bieber (I don't even know if this is the right way to write his last name) and Ed Sheeran, describing them with words like ,,brillant musicians" and not even knowing about bands like Dire Straits. There is nothing bad about the new music, but it feels like songs like these ones are dying, which kind of hurts.
these songs will prevail and in 50 years when no one will know who sheeran is... just do your own thing and dont be defined by the here and now... these songs will not die but sheeran and bieber will :)

Haven't heard this one in quite a few years, still feels like a well-fitting glove. Aside from Mark's ever-fascinating playing style, it's good to see the masterful Pick Withers doing his thing, John Illsley ageing in reverse and the two brothers still getting on with each other. Great track.
There are real delicious and exclusive kinds of food like pizza or sushi, but some times I get rid of them. The same in music. But the early Dire Straits are like every days fresh and warm bred. Pick Withers was my favorite drummer with Dire Straits. When he left, the band lost it's swing. But they didn't falter adopted a new sound and kept on truckin'.

the first two dire straits albums are their best, that's why i LOVE this concert, their most amazing live performance, no bad songs, pure genius
