***** For the normal user yes, your ISP has history of everything you do online. which is why Using Tor/VPN is suggested. (Tor still safe)
To get caught by FBI with Tor, they would have to be I interested in you and literally have to be watching your Tor activity for a while to even start figuring out what your doing.
Using a VPN hides everything from your ISP aswell and the better payed for VPNs keep zero logs of your activity. So even with FBI court oders VPNs can't hand anything over because theirs nothing to hand over. (Private Internet Access)
ISP will know your using Tor or VPNs, but they won't know what your doing while using them.
Humans are the weakest link to security

From what i understand anyone can easily tell if you are using Tor.
So for the government to be able to use it without people knowing its the government they need the masses to also use it.
So its not that they are profiting off crime but rather an integral component for Tor to be an effective tool for the government.

    • @FredwRoT
      @FredwRoT 7 ปีที่แล้ว +31

So a bit about tor, it was originally made by the government for government use. But then they realized that if they used it just by themselves, then anyone monitoring the network would assume that activity is from the US government. So the government thought of a great idea, let everyone use it so that even the government communications are anonymous. Because to most intelligence services, just because you don't have any way to ascertain what the communication holds, just noticing ACTIVITY of communications can be very important in situations.

DIY MAN I don’t get why everyone thinks that this happens. There’s nothing wrong with being anonymous the government doesn’t car or they would block access to tor website. It’s the same as people assume looking up how to make LSD or something puts you on a watch list. It’s completely aloud to know and if they kept records of everyone that did it would be impractical. Even looking up highly illegal and in no way necessary things like underage explicit material probably won’t do anything.

Its not about Tor being insufficient or leaking, Ross Ulbricht wasnt one to not corrrectly utilize it and set it up properly which is essential in the first place. But true anomonity between him and his Admins was where the leaks began. Man in the middle attacks discovered through packets, following them to his admins and they potentially had a weaker system setup.

There are ways to scrub a computers existence while online. IP address can be tracked as well as each router uses a specific number tracked from its creation at whatever factory. I knew someone who explained how to create something new that worked out side of the OS and over Road it to give full access without showing a link at all! So it can be done but takes a genius in coding and a great understanding of software controls.

All those have to be ignored so that the most critical targets feel comfortable with the illusion of anonymity. WRONG . One makes a deliberate choice to follow the career that generally , has a goal to profit and live a lavish life at expense of others , with no guilt or shame and lots of support from piers , friends , and Family. The other in most cases , DOESNT have a choice , is driven to survive the daily grind , while trying to feed their kids or their addictions or both. They have no support , no real friends , and no Family to speak of , they are often in bad situations that include getting robbed or bashed or both, they have to watch out for rivals , people who get jealous , gangs , bikies , and police they get called scum and rarely appreciated for taking the risk . They can't trust anyone around them ,and often lead a lonely existence. I have been there and Its rough and unforgiving with little reward , streets are cold and unforgiving, I hated it with a passion , but when one cant get any work or any opportunity to break away from poverty , what are you to do ? try explain to your kids why there is no xmas for them , not because my lack of effort , but because I cant get a job and refuse to steal, have no money and no family to call on for help ? IF given a choice , NO , I WOULDNT do that , Every parent wants to shine in the eyes of their children , be able to walk with some pride and dignity , to be a contribution to improving society. TRUTH , everybody is capable of doing almost anything to survive , given the right circumstances, doesnt mean thats who they really are or want to be. If I had my own shop or business , things would have been very different.

Every person that was caught, doing illegal acts via TOR, was caught due to them revealing themselves, and not due to a vulnerability in TOR.
If, for example, you e-mail someone, via TOR, and you sign your e-mail message with your real name, then you defeat the benefit of using TOR.
If, for example, you sign on to facebook, via TOR, and post that you just robbed a bank, then when the police come to arrest you, it is not due to a vulnerability in TOR.
TOR is run 100% via open source code. Every person that understands computer code (and that is a lot of people, globally) can see exactly how the computers on the TOR network are handling information. There is no way that there is a hidden way for anyone to expose those that are using TOR.
Short of an undiscovered flaw in the code, that no one other than a government official has discovered, the contention that the authorities can magically unmask you is baseless.
Now, if you use TOR via Windows 10, then you are risking your anonymity, because Windows 10 tracks everything that you do (every keystroke, every mouse click, every file access). And Windows 10 phones home. But this is not a flaw in TOR.
If you keep javascript enabled, then you might reveal yourself, even via TOR. But that is not a vulnerability of TOR. That is you using a program (javascript), and that program sends out your computer information, regardless of whether or not you are using TOR. And most sites require javascript, in order to function properly. So if you want to use popular sites, then you have to keep javascript enabled, and so kiss your anonymity goodbye, even via TOR.
If you want remain anonymous on the internet, then use a free and open source Linux operating system, and use only free and open source internet tools (for example, the TOR browser). Never use google's chrome browser. And send 100% of your internet traffic over the TOR network. This will make for a slow and very constrained internet experience. But that is the only way to remain anonymous.
TOR is not to blame for using it and you doing something stupid that reveals your identity.

Using TOR on a windows operating system is unsafe. Linux is your best option. A Linux- based system called "Tails OS" is my personal choice, as it allows me to safely use library computers without actually leaving any of my data on the computer. Tails is meant to boot from an external storage device (like a thumbdrive) and essentially borrows the power of the connected computer. Using Tails on your own computer in your own home isn't super unsafe, but if you have something to hide it's worth the extra mile.

Well, the ideal approach with using TOR is to add packet encryption, and data randomization. So, for every TOR hop, you want to change source IP, double encrypt the packets. At then end with a 7 TOR hop, and assuming TLS 4096 bit encryption would be squared (4096^2) in encryption for every hop. So, if you manage to decrypt that traffic and have the private key, they deserve to see your data. Not to mention the quality of your traffic would require nearly 1Gbps from source to destination. And there aren't many global carries offering that kind of bandwidth.

To be more anonymous use a VPN service that has trusted DNS servers that don't leak any information. Also when using TOR try using all onion versions of sites so as to not use a potentially vulnerable server that can be accessed by the government or even controlled by the government. Because once you use a clearnet address, you have a potential leak of your IP Address. And the reason for a VPN is in case you have to use a clearnet address it'll be the VPN IP and not your own.

Yes there was a vulnerability in tor. So you may wonder what was it ?
Actually when you play a video in tor browser , it requires some plugin to run the video like Adobe flash and voilla you just left your traces of identity .
So the whole story goes like this that FBI was trying to catch pedophiles who were using tor to watch illegal content , so FBI recruited one of the old memeber of tor team who had left the tor development team but he was in main development team when it was created . So they hired him , asked him to find vulnerability ( or we can assume that threatened him :) ) and he lead to fact that those video plugins are loopholes , they store your information . So working on this lead the FBI caught several pedophiles.

I need a 2nd for trading sports events so there can't be any sort of delay as split second timing is essential. I would need this to be anonymous from my Mac mini and my IP and just wondering it Tor would be unsuitable for live trading? Can you or anyone advise please? Thank you.

Tor is just one step. You should run Tor through a VPN (like Ghost VPN) for true anonymity.

Imagine having a friend hacker that gave you a virus that infects the person who tried to hack into your account or computer and can only be revoked by a secret key

I went on the dark web for the first time and went on Silk Road 3.0 or 3.1 or something. I never had the intention of buying
anything, I just wanted to explore. The website thought I was a robot and showed me a capta with my IP address. Does
this get saved and can someone use an IP address to locate me or am I being paranoid about the whole thing.
Just my first time and wanna make sure.

You already gave up the rights to your activities from signing up to your ISP. Its theres. Nothing is ever really private.

Can a VPN not hide your activity from an ISP? Genuinely curious.

Build your own custom computer and custom wifi and write your own custom code and internet then encrypt with a quantum computer you built yourself. You'll be safe, but there will be no one to share the information with lol

+O.O because the governments of most countries control the nodes and structure of the internet. They also have highly-trained spies and a bunch of hackers at their disposal. But they're only gonna use that on people who actually matter. Most people don't matter if they don't do stuff that's too illegal or controversial.

    • @TasX
      @TasX 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

like if you think about it, almost every torrenting site has been up for years, even though they're very much illegal. The only ones that are actually taken down from the FBI or CIA are child porn, weapons, and drug sites, even if the sites are protected much more.

If you use a server side proxy like TOR then you'll be anonymous to everyone EXCEPT the serverside proxy administrators! But you can never be completely anonymous however you can get close if you hack into a series of servers that don't cooperate with authorities and you telnet from one to the next until you feel comfortable that you can surf. Finally, you probably want to do that from internet cafe with a wig and abeard so it's all just a pain in the ass.

Probably easier to surf TOR from a burner phone

How do we know if a website onion is compromised, do we simply ask the question to the owner ? How do we verify if our device has a malware, trojan or key logger ? If we use a public wifi, the public wifi has the IP of the clients connecting to their wifi, so how to manage that ?

What you really need to do is manufacture your own computer from scratch and use the furniture store's wifi sequentially routed through at least 2 burner phones while never staying in the same location for more than an hour. Then you can read all the trap hentai you want without Pete from the FBI thinking you're gay.

I figure the best way to stay anonymous is don't do anything that can track back to you. Don't ever enter any personal information. Wi-Fi is picked up from a restaurant, phone is prepaid one that is set in a fake name. I have a computer I do personal stuff on and another one for everything else. Nothing tracks back to the real me.
