UPDATED research on this topic comparing Google's results with Yahoo, Bing and DuckDuckGo: th-cam.com/video/IKhn20KYnF0/w-d-xo.html This is focusing on how Google censors news and filters alternative and non-established websites and outlets.
DuckDuckGo is my browser's default search engine. But I still keep going back to google more often than I would like to, because even when I use exact phrase between quotes to search for programming solutions, google shows MORE relevant results while DuckDuckGo shows LESS relevant results. Perhaps it has something to do with the spelling prediction. Google often auto-corrects my [infrequent] poor spelling, DuckDuckGo doesn't.
@@duckymonguy2715 yep, don't disagree, but im talking about DDgo creating its own video and email services, this would lead to an "monopoly" (in the sense of onwing multiple services that back each other, not dominance over the market necessarily)
well you see if another website like youtube would become so mainstream they would have to add a price tag per upload something VERY small like like 0.01$ per GB uploaded that would stop the never ending spam of shit witch made youtube be losing money rather thne gaining it. taht money loss is what keeps forsing google to make adpocalipses. but then its a whole, new ishue of ALOT of people not being wiling to upload even if the cost is so low. since any decuraty breach would mean theyr bank acounts would be out in the open.
More like consumers are resources to large corporations. We're mines for capital or cash cows. We're exploited like a resource and controlled almost like a resource. Our purpose is to be converted into money for the company as the true customers of large corporations, shareholders, are looking at the profit margins of large corporations. If large corporations don't exploit everyday people hard enough for money to turn high growth, the shareholders shop elsewhere. I think it's a law that CEOs have to turn a profit for shareholders. That's 21st century corporatism. You're a resource, not a person.
@@astroballs7 in all seriousness Yes, maybe, but people need to stop treating computers and AI like magic that only big corporations and supernerds can create. I switched and using DuckDuckGo for 2 months now So far works pretty perfect, except 1) When I wanted to search for something in internet for a friend I almost said: lemme -google- this, but autofixed midsentence and said *lemme search engine search this* instead, which made for an interesting conversation 2) DuckDuckGo is quirky name, which I am fine, but others don't take it seriously 3) Image results are sometimes not what I look for
I also changed about two months ago. I have the same complaints but, none of those are non starters. I actually am surprised how well it works. The pluses for Duck Duck Go far outweigh the negatives.
Instead of google it, duck it. Example: "What was the first person to travel faster then a speed of sound." Hmmm I'm not sure I guess I'll duck it. Lol
good idea and simple, why I didn't thought of it, probs cuz I tend to overcomplicate things and I kinda like search searcch engine this cuz it's meta but duck it is simple and better and accurate to the duckduck go search engine.@@flankerfiregaming
DuckDuckGo user here. The best recommendation I can give everyone is, don't put all your eggs in one basket. You shouldn't let one corporation provide you all of your digital services, it allows them to create an ecosystem which at first seems like a welcoming place, but soon turns into a walled in prison that you struggle to escape from. It's never a good idea to let ONE corporation provide you your: Web browser (Chrome), OS (Android), Email Account (Gmail), Entertainment (TH-cam, Android Music, etc), Search Engine (Google, Google Maps), Office Suite (Google Docs), File Storage (Google Drive), Digital Payment Method (Google Pay) & Social Networking (Google+/Google Hangouts/Gmail/Phone Contacts). You're giving one corporation your entire life in an open readable book. At the very least, spread out a bit, divide up the digital components of your life to different services. For example, if you want to use Android and Gmail, at least use DuckDuckGo for search, Firefox for your web browser, Dropbox for cloud storage, Paypal for payments, LibreOffice for office software, etc. Have your digital services and software come from a range of sources rather than just one. Aside from the risk to your personal privacy, and how vulnerable you make yourself to the influence of one corporation that will know you better than you know yourself, it also is good for capitalism to have competition between competing corporations, rather than allowing one corporation to form a monopoly on all things digital, especially as we move towards a world where data is going to become more valuable than gold. And good for computing in general as computing is an ecosystem which thrives when there are open standards for interoperability between competing solutions, but in order for that interoperability to be developed, there first has to BE multiple competing solutions.
Honestly, I wouldn't abandon Android. Definitely switch from Chrome to Firefox, Gmail to some other email service, etc, but I'd never switch to iOS or dailymotion.
I also use DuckDuckGo, and recently my school blocked it simply because of the fact that it does not track you and promotes privacy. Not really surprised, since the web filter the school switched to(Securely) attempts to install certificates that change and block certain settings on your device. Said certificates also implement the ability for them to monitor web traffic on your device, even when you are on your own WiFi connection.

Google is too invasive. DuckDuckGo has been the homepage on all of our computers at home for about 3 years now. I maintain several other PCs. I set up DuckDuckGo as the default search engine on all of them.
TH-cam needs a competitor with as good or better front end, which shouldn't be too tough for enterprising programmers. I can definitely see how they try to trap me in my bubble, especially if I make the mistake of looking for Sasquatch one day. That puts me right into the heart of the UFO and Ancient Aliens morass, shouldering aside the history of 11th Century Eurasia that I would've indulged in, otherwise.

@@JohnnyRecently it's easy. You'll get almost same search suggestion on the first page and most of the simple terms. If ever encountered with problem use duckduckgo bangs. Use !g before search for Google search, w for wiki, reddit, Twitter, Bing, gi for Google images. It becomes very handy to directly search other websites through DDG.
You're not even touching on the issues I have with the website. I mean, hell, the very comment section here is a frickin' joke for the year 2018, and would be for 10 years ago.
@Alexandre Balea: Still not getting my standards, so I have to give examples. Reddit's way of formatting text is actually oddly complicated, as if it was a temporary workaround because something broke and you have to write web code. The TH-cam comment section requires people to manually write the user name they're responding to, which is so stone-ages style that I cannot even remember having seen it anywhere else. This actually makes it less easy to use for anyone. There was also a big screwup related to this with their Google+ connection debacle that they handled incompetently. Then the notifications menu where new entries aren't marked; it shows 12 new ones and you need to fold up after 10 and in any case you have to visually count to see which one is the first new one. And then the latest change where comment sections require manual interaction to reveal a handful of new comments, stifling lively communication. It is appalling as hell and a sign of the problem mindset driving such products/services. They train people to accept whatever crap they're handing to them. Also, you can always make things work differently for the mobile version of a website, while using the same backend, and, hell, TH-cam even has an app, so there's no justification for this crap show.
@Alexandre Balea What device(s) and browsers are you using TH-cam on? Because I can disable all my addons on Firefox and I don't get the automatic name adding when clicking on Reply. Never did, on any version.

Devs might not even know how the bots work individually because they generate thousands randomly and pick the ones that work. Honestly there's not a lot of human input in big companies programming anymore.

Because the video is BS. The service is free and you pay with the Information they get and then tailor ads to your search habits. What's wrong with that? And there are a lot errors in this video too. @@nanfoodles But it does censor specific searchs. A better statement would have been that it would look really damn suspicious if this video were to be taken down.
Because some insignifacant 16k strong channel isn't even a blip on their radar. You actually need to be a notable threat to Google for them to actively plot to "deal with the issue". Other than that they mostly warp the "public discourse" by regularly tweaking their terms, services, systems and algorithms... sometimes for better, most of the time for worse - either out of a warped sense of idealism bred by their very narrowminded and intolerant corporate culture/politics or just because it's profitable somehow... I'd say that Google mostly just hedges the bets by showing "problematic" opinions only on page 2 and forth (which nobody ever looks at EVER)... or as shown here just pushes it down 1/2 or 1/3rd of a page, just to improve the odds of their own narrative winning out "a little" in order to subtly swing general discourse in their favor overall. They prefer more subtle and sophisticated approaches to censorship like e.g. shadow-banning or implementing a feature that prevents politicians' names from being paired up with negatively charged words in search suggestions during a time where one particular politician that they are ideologically very close to has had their name pop up in searches together with words like "crime" very frequently, as their own internal search analytics almost certainly has pointed out to them. Google very clearly prefers soft censorship over hard censorship... is what I would say if Google hadn't been really cozying up to the Communist Party of China and their rock-hard censorship recently.

Because you can never fully replace a huge ecosystem like Google. The business model TH-cam operates on is a great feat actually. The variety in content you can watch would be severely compromised if you did ditch google completely. Imagine just using Vimeo for online videos...

Regarding the NASA article: some people think that it's still better Google promotes a trusted source over conspiracy websites. Go to Yandex, Bing, Yahoo or any other search engine and type in "is climate change a hoax". Either the globalclimatescam and/or the breitbart articles are going to be TOP 2 for all of them. It's not just DuckDuckGo, but big search engines with billions of dollars behind them. The NASA article is also there, but it's 4th, 5th or lower. But it's not at the very top for neither of them. Only for Google. Now it's not just keywords that make it through the search engine optimization. It's also the volume of link references for the particular article. So it is possible that the NASA article is heavily referenced as a response to the keyword "climate change is a hoax" in online discussions and that's why it ranks so high. Is it likely that Google is the only search engine able to capture this link-referencing to the NASA article on this search term? I'll let you answer that question for yourselves. But if Google actively promotes a scientific article for a good cause, it can for example censor scientific articles that might reveal devastating impacts of Google's fresh-water-cooled data center that drains local aquifers in South Carolina. This is the advice: use more than one search engine. Never trust a single source or a company. DuckDuckGo, Qwant, Startpage, Searx are all great privacy focused alternatives.

@Peter Ghansiam If your Google Account doesn't have identifying information, I don't see how you've lost your privacy. Google can know what I search for, what I watch, listen to, my interests, where I've been, but that doesn't matter to me as long as google doesn't go to a company and say *Tyler* did this and that and that. As far as any third party is concerned, some range of users like both X coffee shop and Y coffee shop, not Tyler, his friend, his other friend, etc. like them. That's private enough for me and it means I get to enjoy all their services. Also my name isn't really Tyler.
Non-targeted ads still give them money just they don't get that sweet, sweet click revenue, that and selling raw information is an immediate sure-fire way of getting even more money that doesn't involve live numbers (though that's LITERALLY SPYING). The privacy normative the EU forced good in this way as you at least are able to know and opt out of the over-the-counter advertisers, specifically (or at least, attempting to specify) you don't want your data to be collected and sold to advertisers. For the traffic Google gets, anything that goes beyond non-targeted ads is unnecessary bullshit used to rack up more money than they need to maintain the services, if Google wants to grow bigger it's the consumer's choice to opt-in additional data collection so they get more money out of that single person by simply using their product.

If I type a question like “is climate change a hoax” I want a broad spread of reputable articles pertaining to the validity of climate change, not necessarily articles that said the word hoax a lot. Google provided the information I was looking for, DDG gave me what was relevant to keywords. That said... The amount of tracking google does is fucking terrifying. Just because that information is being used (somewhat) responsibly now doesn’t mean they always will.
You could just type "is climate change a hoax" to hear the climate change deniers' arguments, then type "is climate change real" to hear the climate change believers' arguments. Yeah you have to type two searches, but typing just one with the word 'hoax' would never be a fair test anyway.
SEB1991SEB SEB1991SEB if I’m watching TV and I hear my news outlet say hoax (a word used by both conservatives and liberals when referring to climate change), that’s the word I’m most likely to use. As frequent internet users we know better, but google is designed for the general populous, not necessarily us. For people like us that want a more traditional pagerank system we are free to use a service like duck duck go. Opinion is no reason to be boycotting a company though.
@JohnyOnFire Gaming Google includes _a lot_ of fake news under their "news" section, too. I get that they have to draw the line at some point, but some of the websites that show up in my news search are just flat out ridiculous. I don't care if you're right wing or left wing, if you constantly make shit up, bend the truth, have zero editorial standard and exclusively post misleading clickbait articles with capitalised words, you're not a serious news site that should appear on Google News before pages like The Guardian. I've seen this both in my native Norwegian and English. That being said, this is a very difficult topic, but with Google News they've clearly tried to concentrate the searches to serious, established news websites only, which makes me wonder why some of these pages show up there. Not gonna lie, they're usually far-right propaganda outlets, and I feel Google leaves them on there just to appear impartial to them - I don't know. Either way, I believe Google has a responsibility to leave proven disinformation sites out of their news cycle. They do have a lot of influence and responsibility.
I don’t really mind if anyone is looking at my history or photos or what porn I watch I just don’t want them to take that info and black mail me with it because apparently that’s what they do with politicians...
Personally I'm not worried because I don't think I've ever wrote/searched or done anything online that I wouldn't be comfortable with telling the public if it was necessary, so they could never blackmail me with those kind of info.
I just want Google to stop trying to block anime...seriously they make it harder and harder to get the actual good sites...luckily I already knew the exact names of the good sites.

More like consumers are resources to large corporations. We're mines for capital or cash cows. We're exploited like a resource and controlled almost like a resource. Our purpose is to be converted into money for the company as the true customers of large corporations, shareholders, are looking at the profit margins of large corporations.
Thank you for such a reasonable comment!
Began using DuckDuckGo this year. I like what I see.

Utterly failing on TH-cam. ... Well, to my personal standards, that is.

Because the video is BS. The service is free and you pay with the Information they get and then tailor ads to your search habits. What's wrong with that? And there are a lot errors in this video too. People forget how things were before Google became good and when you searched for something, you definitely hit with spam and some porn in your search results, just for searching something simple. Also how does one think Duck Duck makes its money? Same way that Google does by your information. Also your ISP sees everything you do on the net regardless of anything else
when i do a simple (few) key word search and the first page returns are missing my search terms (common words) it's proof enough for me. ZERO to do with my search preferences, but my request. don't sugar coat bullshit.

nanfoodles r/BoneAppleTea

Yes. But let the regulators come in and bureaucrats really take over the filtering programs, and we'll be well on our way to homogenization. I hope Trump keeps his hands off and just lets THESE kinds of conversations get his job done for him, marginalizing the Big-Brother Platforms. It's hard for people to imagine, but really, things change very rapidly, nowadays. The culture's left the culture manufacturers behind, and it's becoming more and more obvious, every day.

But anyway, to be responsive to what you actually SAID, I think they're trying to control something that's just too big for them to control.

Better have a search engine that acts like professor than a guy that says "imma give you these articals, idc if it convinces you otherwise"

Bullshit.

Well, you really have no idea about the programming behind youtube's algorithm, and implying that this algorithm would/should only recommend you such a video if you previously showed interest in "duckduckgo" is kind of silly.
But the contention of this video producer is that Google skews search results to make the outcome in Google's favor or to an agenda. This video certainly is not that.
Oh, I see. That wasn't necessarily my take from this video. And besides, youtube's algorithm isn't the same as google's overlord master algorithm. TH-cam still does what youtube does best. ie. Just start watching 2-3 videos about conspiracy theories and you will see your recommendations flooded with all sorts of insane stupid ass conspiracy videos.
This is what FBI did by using deep web to find paedophiles. They got access to few sites and still operating them to track more people. Google is very smart and they will not let any other search engine to destroy their key formula(selling data).

I used DuckDuckGo for 8 months now and I switched back to Google because Google relevance algorithm is so much better. in 1 out of 7 cases I always had to temporarly switch to Google to find what I need. Google also display search results better, like if you're googleing "Avengers Endgame" you'll immediately get the cast and all other relevant info at the top or Wikipedia articles will get displayed immediately in a small box at the top. With DuckDuckGo (DDG) I always have to click a second time to Wikipedia or look for a website which has the right info I need, where Google all does it themselves. DDG may be better for privacy concerns, but after 8 months I have to say searching things with DDG just made it a pain in the ass. Sometimes the Wikipedia pages are also at the 5th or 6th place, which is just annoying
Edit: Searching something in DDG in an other language than English, which in my case is German it gets even more annoying when looking for the right results.
I really want to take this seriously but...
1. In your examples the search results were still pretty close
L
I don’t really mind if anyone is looking at my history or photos or what porn I watch
I just don’t want them to take that info and black mail me with it because apparently that’s what they do with politicians...
jocaguz18 see that’s what I don’t mind
I don’t care if they get a photo of me naked and wank all over it
I just don’t want them to blackmail me
Personally I'm not worried because I don't think I've ever wrote/searched or done anything online that I wouldn't be comfortable with telling the public if it was necessary, so they could never blackmail me with those kind of info.
