I always thought I was alone in thinking Superman Returns was the best Superman movie. FINALLY SOMEONE WHO AGREES WITH ME!! Superman Returns was so much better than Man of Steel.

Superman Returns is a beautiful film. It has actual character development, the relationships feel true and honest and it asks a very earnest question: what is Superman's role? Arguably Man of Steel/Batman v Superman asks a similar question, but this film doesn't attempt to insist that the world NEEDS SUPERMAN OR ELSE.
Having said that, I could have done without the canned Lex Luthor insta-continent plot. It felt too divorced from the premise (Superman's mid-life crisis).
Watch "The Death of Superman Lives" though, because it's fascinating.

I've seen the deleted scene you're talking about. I think cutting it was the right thing. It's a good scene considered on its own, but the way they ultimately went, opening with Lex and then cutting to Supes returning by crashing back into the farm was better than showing him at the ruins of Krypton. Entrances are important. Plus, I like keeping Supes's trip back to Krypton vague and mysterious, since it's really only there to set up the premise anyway.

On the whole, Snyder isn't even on the same planet as Singer. But Snyder's had his moments, and when he's good, he's really good. But I agree, the critical reception has not been encouraging. And "Screenplay by David Goyer" is never a credit I look forward to seeing.

I loved Superman Returns. It had heart. It was nostalgic, it was tastefully, elegantly made. I enjoyed it a lot more than the Man of Steel which I found a bit overly violent. Superman Returns was the film I wanted to see.

The plane rescue was one thing I absolutely remember loving. Remember, in 2006, it was barely 5 years after 9/11. I was going on a plane trip for the first time since then, and was admittedly nervous as a young teenager. Regardless of how I felt about the rest of the movie, seeing Superman rescue an entire plane of people made me feel hopeful and safe. It really tugged at my heartstrings. I used to dislike him for being cliche, but nowadays, I love Superman for giving me back a little courage and hope in a time I needed it more than usual.
Seeing how happy he makes me just makes me sad to see how depressing and tragic his film life has become. Even if I think the post-80s movies aren't nearly as bad as people say, they still tend to depress me to see someone who deserves so much get so little in return... Especially after Batman VS Superman. I know it's probably not practical for a modern or 'entertaining' movie, but I wish Superman could have a film where he can see how much hope he gives the world, and how much fans like us love everything he is and stands for--in a way that makes him actually feel happy about it, rather than burdened.
I dunno, it hurts to see good people suffer. Superman is as close to all-good as it gets. I'd love to see him rewarded rather than weighed down for his endless good deeds in a blockbuster someday... Hey, a guy can dream, right?

MoS had no legs, which means it wasn't well received by the audience and had a bad word of mouth. It opened huge thanks to hype and marketing, but it dropped 68% on its second week and hasn't had a single healthy week since. For it to be barely over half a million at this point in its run, leaving theatres faster than passengers left the Titanic, shows that it had virtually no audience support

I agree with you Steve. Superman Returns is criminally underrated The casting choices were excellent, but I felt as though Lois could have had a feistier Margot-Kidder/Amy Adams style rendition, as opposed to the Kate Bosworth version we see, despite the emotional character arc. I read that Bryan Singer also wanted Jude Law to play General Zod. I could just picture Law's rendition of Terence Stamp's Zod, in the same way Kevin Spacey echoed Gene Hackman. I would have LOVED for Zod to return, but unfortunately Law was the only person Singer saw in the role so he was dropped.
On the whole I think its a great movie, and it sure as hell is way better than Man of Steel!

    • @ThomasFeragne
      @ThomasFeragne 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

While I agree that Superman Returns is underrated (I own the DVD) I believe the whole project was a perfectly executed recreation of the Christopher Reeves Superman. The casting was great. Brandon was great! But let me make an analogy that will best illustrate my take. Superman Returns is to Man of Steel as Spiderman is to the Amazing Spiderman. (And please forgive the DC/Marvel crossover) Now that we've got that out of the way. I did feel that "Returns" introduced too many plot lines to seed a sequel instead of focusing on the core story and character development. I say that with the exception of the opening sequence and Superman's return with the 747/space plane thing ending in the baseball field to cheers and wonder. That was truly awesome! Even the reintroduction of Clark back to the Daily planet. The individual elements worked, but the cohesiveness got lost on me a little and there was a very little character discovery (not origins) but it seems all the characters where kept at "arms length" and that kept me disconnected from the film. Again, I still like the movie and enjoy it more each time I watch it. On its own it can stand, but I suppose people didn't want a recreation, they wanted a reboot. I bring you back to the Spiderman vs, Amazing Spiderman. The difference there is that the "Toby" Spidermans worked because Marvel is generally more COMIC-al in it's stories which is why they got 3 movies out of it. Also there had never been a really good Spiderman film prior because of the technical complexities, and it was an origin story. In Superman Returns you hit the ground running and it was to be an inserted sequel to the line of Christopher Reeves films. So, I feel like "you had to know" and accept elements of the film with little explanation. Of course, I had the least resistance because I had that background, but the "masses" maybe did not. "Returns" is a great fan film and undeserving of any of the negativity it receives. I'm excited about the Man of Steel films and there eventual Justice League connections. While I would have loved to see a SR2, I guess it wasn't in the cards.

Hi there Thomas. Yeah I understand what you are saying. And in certain points in the film I do agree that, if not for our prior knowledge of the Richard Donner film, the movie begins to feel lost. With that being said it was a very engaging movie. As much as it is a spiritual sequel to the Chris Reeve movies, it stands out on its own, and I loved the romantic tension and dynamic between Lois and Clark, and Lois and Richard. The story was engaging, and had me moving with its changes constantly.
This was not the case with Man of Steel. While I have the utmost praise for the casting choices and acting in the movie, it feels very shallow, due to its lack of character development. It seems like Zack Snyder and Co spent more time trying to perfect the film visually, rather than working on the story. And it worked. Man of Steel had stunning visuals, and I do not mean the CGI. The CGI was generic, and the whole movie was just wall-to-wall destruction sequences and they served as a device for pointless action scenes. The movie felt like a generic Sci-Fi flick from the late 00's with a generic soundtrack. It didnt feel magnificant. It may be nostalgia talking, but Donner's Superman depended on story. Action took second place and it did not disappoint either. Supes never kicked anyone's ass in it, and all he did was chase missiles and do some heavy lifting/pushing. Yet it was a master piece. And Superman Returns followed in the same manner. Not that it didnt have its share of CGI, but it was balanced. I'd definitely put SR over MOS due to this reason. :)

You don't know that he'll be a dead-beat dad. Maybe he sends Lois a check every month, or she has his Daily Planet wages garnished. And every year, Superman swoops down and picks through the Toys For Tots bin in Metropolis Square to find the perfect gift for Jason. And then he sneaks into Lois and Richard's house at night and leaves it under the tree, and maybe watches them have sex for a bit before letting himself out.

    Hey there,
I recently stubled upon you on the net. I absolutelly agree!!!! I don't understand how this wonderful - and wonderfully made film - could be so hated. Because it truly understand what Superman is all about: Poetry. Without it it's just a guy in rediculous clothes being strong. And this movie - pure poetry! Just remember the scene when Lois goes to the roof in the elevator... as Clark watches her using x - ray vision. As if he himself lifts her to a piedestal of his world. Beautiful...

It's rare that I comment on a TH-cam video but... I HAD TO! You've totally echoed my own thoughts & feelings about this epic movie. Superman Returns isn't just my favorite superhero movie (though the original Superman and Iron Man are excellent too!).. it's one of my favorite MOVIES in cinematic history... PERIOD.
If only post-OT Star Wars movies could've been as powerful to their franchise as Singer's Superman was to this one.
I sometimes show Superman Returns to people who don't remember it or never saw it...and they're ALL blown away.
I don't understand AT ALL where the resentment comes from.. This is a BEAUTIFULLY written movie delivered with HEART.
I don't care that Superman doesn't throw a punch. There's PLENTY of action-- and the airplane sequence (and Lex Luthor fistfight) are EPIC and pretty unmatched in terms of actual suspense... (The airplane sequence keeps you at the edge of your seat and then literally cheering w/ joy-- WHAT SUPERHERO MOVIE TODAY DOES THAT? In today's flicks, I zone out during most the repetitive action)...
Spacey is INCREDIBLE. Even if his plan doesn't completely make sense yet, SO WHAT?!? He's a MANIAC and now he's even more "crazy" and vengeful after his 5 years in prison..
The poetry- of Superman LEAVING Earth to find people "like him" and then returning home to realize that he has a son-- One of his "own kind" was here on Earth all along-- is AWESOME-- and I think it's often missed by many as one of the main messages of this movie.
The score is SOARING-- The original "wow" John Williams music plus some new, amazing bits...
The way they took everything that was right about the original... straight from the intro-fly to Earth-- and UPDATED it to be BETTER... while telling a compelling, powerful story--- is PHENOMENAL...
Singer clearly poured his HEART into this MASTERPIECE of ART--which, even then, was still pretty well recv'd by critics (and has a higher RT score than the lackluster 2013 "Man of Steel" to date).... Superman Returns -- is how movies SHOULD BE-- powerful, gripping, and compelling from beginning to end...

The plane rescue scene is also awesome because it shows the real world limitations of Superman. Just because he has almost unlimited strength, doesn't mean he can use it in an unlimited way. He has to use it on real world objects, and those have limitations. So he has to try to stop this plane, but in doing so he's tearing it to pieces. This is something that has never been shown in a Superman film before, I think, and it makes the idea of Superman much cooler.

Superman Returns was an intelligent and sensitive response to the legacy of the earlier Superman films- it has the highest regard for its antecedents (Superman 1/2!) but expands and improves upon them in many ways. Great to see this review Steve- felt like I was on my own with this one for years! I would love to read Quentin Tarantino's review, he is a massive fan of the film apparently.

here is what really bugs me about superman returns
1- apparently the world is so peaceful that not only does it no longer need superman, but it also doesn't need POLICE or MILITARY. seriously, during the whole movie not one police or military personnel even attempted to stop lex luthor from doing his scheme
2- guy who gets out of jail for trying to destroy the world tries to destroy the world again but only this time he doesn't get arrested or executed for his crimes
3- how is superman able to lift an entire continent of kryptonite (his weakness)?

I love this movie, too. Brandon was a great Superman. I've been a fan of Frank Langella since his Dracula movie (hottest Dracula of them all). All the actors were great. Great everything.
I read that during a take when Brandon was lifted on the wires as Superman was flying upward, he was accidentally bashed into the rafters of the set. They didn't know until he was lowered. Brandon had squelched his reaction to the pain so he wouldn't ruin the filming of the scene below him. Impressive guy.

A couple of years ago some fans made a full one hour, twenty two minute movie called, Superman: Requiem. It was fan made and fan acted but still an interesting little romp. The music soundtrack was superb. Any chance that you will be reviewing it? And if you do please be kind, this was after all made without studio backing.

It wasn't really a mountain of kryptonite, since it was the crystal that made the land. So it is more like mountain that has some kryptonite in it. That is why when Superman landed on it, he didn't drop to his knees right away but it took sometime until he became more and more uncomfortable with the kryptonite in the ground. BUT, let's not forget that this movie belongs to the movie series that made time go backwards by changing earths rotation and what about throwing of the "S" in Superman 2.

Unfortunately, Singer managed to nearly destroy 2 superhero franchises in a single blow! First: By abandoning what he had started with THE X-MEN only to leave the 3rd in the hands of Brett Ratner to complete the trilogy. 2nd: By finding inspiration in "The Devil Wears Prada" to come up with a script for SUPERMAN RETURNS. Not to mention the fact that Cyclops was killed off early in "X-MEN: The Last Stand" so that James Marsden could be available to fully commit to the role of Richard White.

Hey Steve, add me to the list of people who were blown away by this movie. I've got it on BluRay.
I loved Brandon Routh as Superman, I loved the references to the original films & the use of John William's music. I also loved how they preserved the carefree feel - yet made Lex Luthor less slapstick & darker as a character. Lois was a lot more precocious in the original films, but I suppose being abandoned by Superman & being left with his child would result in a more wounded & vulnerable Lois.

Three. He put a thick layer of dirt between himself and the kriptonite to increase how long he could withstand it. Personally, I don't believe that a more brooding, introspective Superman was what most people wanted. Like Robin Hood, Superman is fundamentally a vitally alive character. If the original Krypton-entombed sequence had been retained, it would have helped the audience accept just why Superman is behaving as he is. I think the film suffered a little from over-length and over-ambition for a reboot as well. I thought it was an honourable film that didn't quite have enough focus.

To me, what really bothered me the first time I saw this film was the basis for Superman's return: he left because some astrophysicists claimed Krypton existed. So he left the planet to determine if it was still there, despite the fact we know it is destroyed. Guess he forgot the fact it takes time for light to reach earth, so astrophysicists were seeing Krypton pre-explosion (assuming it is at least 20 light years away from earth) or it wasn't Krypton at all. Kal-El didn't spend more than 5 seconds to think about it (since Jor-El already told him the planet was destroyed and had no reason not to believe him) or tell anyone he was leaving. So he just left without so much as a note on the refrigerator door. And he comes back assuming things will be just like they were with Lois when he left. Sorry, but you don't just abandon a woman for years and act like she will be cool with it. He deserved the depression and regret that he had in the film. I didn't feel sorry for him one bit. And it was spoiled after the first 20 minutes of the movie for me. It wasn't because there was no punching or whatever. It's because Kal was a complete moron and it's his fault his life sucks when he gets back.

I wouldn't necessarily call MAN OF STEEL a masterpiece due to some of its flaws. However, I will say that it did put Superman back on track as far as re-establishing a new film franchise. He finally got the long overdue epic treatment he deserved & hopefully Man of Steel will result in the kind of sequel that will put him back on top. RETURNS wasn't exactly a disaster at the box office but it did perform far below DC/Warner Bros Studios expectations. Thus resulting in a 6-7 year setback.

I just saw Man of Steel. It was everything I hoped for. There are flaws, but this is a very good film. As a film critic, 8.3/10. As a biased Superman fan, 9.5/10.

Lois may have said that Richard is a good man but she'll never be truly happy with him Richard even said to Clark that after being together with Lois for a few years she was still a mystery to him which by you can tell by the look on his face he finds it exciting. He thinks he's got himself a real gem & a woman who truly loves but Lois doesn't tell him things for a reason underneath she secretly still loves Superman Clark even guessed that it was her password on her computer when they were looking for her & her son. Then when Richard asked her if she was ever in love with Superman she paused then while looking her so-called fiancee in the face she replied no but it was plain as day that she was still & always will be in love with Superman She lied because she didn't want to deal with Richard's bullshit, attitude, bitterness, anger & jealousy at a man that was basically a god. She even prolonged her marriage to Richard for 5 years to which Jimmy told Clark when Clark learned that Lois was engaged "Just don't ask her when the wedding is she hates that." I guess people at the Daily Planet were asking Lois "So when are you & Richard tying the knot?" To which Lois either snarled like a wolf & told them to mind their own business or she simply gave them a very nasty look as if to say "Piss off!" Next when she went flying with Superman she almost said fiancee but corrected herself & just said Richard instead. After he flew her back she almost kissed him but Superman quickly pulled away he was not about to be a homewrecker Lois said Richard was a good man & she looked like she wanted to say something else but Superman shook his head & flew away. When Superman was going to fly off to deal with Lex Lois looked at him in fear & worry & said "You're hurt." to which Superman opened the door & said goodbye to her & left. I know Richard might've have been getting suspicious about his fiancee's feelings these are just some of things I mentioned that Lois's heart & soul belong to only Superman not mention she had sex with him & had his child.

I think this was critically better received than Man of Steel is. The fans seem to like Man of Steel better. The biggest gripe from critics I'm seeing is the lack of wit/charm like the originals. Would be very interested for your review of MOS. I think too many people think that MOS needs to incorporate aspects of the original films. I feel it needs to stray away as far as it can, which it does. I loved it.

I don't hate Superman Returns, but it's just dull.
After watching your review, I saw Superman Returns again, and my opinion of it hasn't changed. Visually the movie is gorgeous. But I didn't feel Superman's conflict of being "not needed anymore", and "it's time to move on".
I would give Superman Returns 3/6

Superman Returns was like watching a fan of Leonardo da Vinci take some tracing paper then draw over the Mona Lisa for the next 2 1/2 hours. The film was simply nothing more than a bad carbon copy of Donner's original, which is very disappointing considering that fans had been waiting 2 decades to see him back on the silver screen.

Of all the criticisms I had of this film and of those I've heard, I can't recall anyone complaining that Superman never hits anybody or ever thought that this is an issue. I don't hate this film, but it's just mediocre to me. You do make a good point about how the arc he has in the film reflects that of how he had been diminished on the big screen.

Interesting. Superman is rendered helpless much like he was helpless in Salkind's "Superman" to save his earthly father. He turned time back literally in S-1, but can't in S-Returns. The quandry of what IS Superman's "purpose" here as the theme is good, too (Earth has gone on w/out him).I was one who was very confused as to the timeline. So much so I only viewed this once (I still haven't re-watched it...I need to find a copy).

It's probably my favorite Superman movie, but that is only because I thought the 4 from the 80's were all pretty crappy.
Otherwise it was a decent movie, but doesn't compare to the truely great superhero movies (spiderman 2, X-men, Batman begins, the Dark Knight)

The reason I hated Superman Returns were quite a lot and thats not including the action. I didnt like the fact that he went away without saying goodbye to anyone [except his mom]. Yes he had the right to go, but why not have a press conference or something? How could we ever trust someone who just leaves when they feel like. I hated the fact he tried to rekindle his past relationship with Lois even though he knew she was engaged because that was very manipulative and wrong.

The meteor in Sups return? It was not a meteor it was a space ship.
The scene was cut off, but he went to krypton in a kryptonian space ship made in the fortress of solitude (because he had to protect himself from the kryptonite radiation)

As much as I am a huge fan of your channel Steve, I must digress and say Superman Returns was awful. Brandon Routh was a horrific choice to play Superman (outside of looking like Reeve) the man couldn't act his way out of a wet paperbag. The whole movie was bad and was just one big love letter to Donner. Oh look Superman lifts an island made of Kryptonite, wait what?... Oh look Lex Luthor has another real estate scam, how original, wait what? Oh look, Superman has a son, wait, what? But, who cares, I guess to some people, the stalker notebook version of Superman is much more fun to watch. To each his own, just happy they aren't making a sequel to this turd. Anyways, keep up the good work Steve, love the channel.

Amusingly, Superman 3 wasn't a terrible movie if judged on its own merits. It's just not a Superman movie. It's a decent Richard Pryor comedy that features Superman as a side character. It's definitely NOT what was needed though. It would've been fine as a side project when there were other good Superman movies. If you like Richard Pryor and are in the mood for one of his comedies, it's enjoyable. But you cannot go into it expecting Superman.

The problems with Superman Returns go way beyond Kate Bosworth. Even Brandon Routh was terrible in the part...very mannequin-like in his performance with limited screen time. Especially for a the film that was named after his character.

Did you re-watch SR on DVD or Blu ray? The BD has a deleted opening that I'm floored by them not putting in the finished film just by how it features very expensive, COMPLETED special effects that are simply relegated to "bonus features".
My esteem for the film has increased a bit after viewing your arguments. I don't love it, but I'm more impressed at the thoughtfulness that went into its making.
What's the next movie series are you going to tackle?

Hey Steve, great review on "Superman Returns". Very enjoyable film I agree with you on a few things. I didn't think Brandon Routh could've pulled off the role of Superman/ Clark Kent, but he was quite convincing and he looked and sounded like the late Christopher Reeve.I never thought of it as a hindrance. I also enjoyed the production design and the fight scenes, though few and far between. I didn't care much for the dramatic angle between he and Lois Lane and this whole who's the father to Lane's son was very disturbing, is it Superman or Cyclops the father of Jason White lol. I also didn't like Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor, who played him off as goofy caricature, something Gene Hackman did in the 1970's and 1980's. Spacey could've pulled off Luthor in subtle role like he was in "Se7en". He should've known better. But it wasn't entirely bad as director Bryan Singer tries to live up to the sequels from that era. The effort was there, even if it didn't measure up. Come visit my channel on Superman Returns, I'd like to hear from you. Okay? Thank you very much
