Movie Review: Superman IV: The Quest for Peace

- From genre-defining blockbuster to under-budgeted, tossed-off B-movie in only nine years. As I review the past Superman films in anticipation of Man of Steel, let's pause to remember Superman IV: The Movie That Killed Superman (At Least for a While).

The main reason for the short running time is that an entire subplot about another clone of Superman (the first Nuclear Man) was cut out.
no, 3 is better than 4. I know that's not saying much, but 4 was terrible.

Phys Therapy is my thing and I kept up with the news about Chris' therapy after the accident. He was able, with mechanical and therapists' assistance, go through the motions of walking for a little while on a treadmill. He looked so happy.
I remember a heart touching single box cartoon tribute to him in the news after he died. It was of an empty wheelchair in the foreground and Superman was off in the distance, flying away.
I remember I saw Superman IV in the theater back in 1987. I was 8 years old and I loved it. Don't like it all that much now, but I appreciate it a bit more than Superman III, which I did enjoy as a child, but even then I thought it was worse than STM and II.
Yeah. I see why they cut all of that out. The dimwitted original Nuclear Man was just awful. How'd that even make it in front of the camera?

Hi steve really enjoy listening to your reviews. I aint going to lie i really do like superman 4 i really liked what Chris Reeve tryed to do with this film. People say how bad this film is how poor the special effects are even locations are mentioned. But you have to look at it this way before the production started Chris was promised a proper budget of over 34 million. It was going to be over 2 hours then cause cannon was a complete mess making over 30 films whyle warners was only making 3 or 4
Throw the dismal Supergirl into that stew and the whole "Superman" franchise was effectively destroyed.
Steve you is wrong Superman 3 was Blockbuster hit 1983 made 80 million dollars. Superman 3 was 10 highest gloss film of 1983. Superman 3 made money in box office like Superman 2 in 1980.
I was amazed how fast Reeves bulked up. No doubt he took steroids. He was asked how he bulked up. He said, "i lifted really heavy weights with a trainer".

So Nuclearman was created in the sun... and then just happened to find Earth after his creation????
this film was good, Number 1 its fiction so any real Superman fan can suspend there disbelief and enjoy it, Number 2 it was made for kids in 1987 so a Superman kid at that time would have enjoyed it just as much as the first Superman movie, and Number 3 the budget for this movie was spread out between 30 other movies Cannon Films was working on so funding was slashed big time, over all its not as good as the others but not as bad as people say. People today are too spoiled from CGI.
All I remembered from this movie as a kid was a bunch of people standing around talking, Nuclear Man fighting Supes on the moon and throwing nukes into the sun. I thought the villain was pretty terrifying with his feral nature and long nails.

The ending to the review makes me kind of sad. I hate to see franchises die. Will you be reviewing Superman Returns again or will you just point people in the direction of your vast library of videos gushing about it when that one comes up? ;)
Superman III fills me with disgust. But, IV is such a depressing film in that this is the last we see of this classic cast--and what a low blow. I watched it last night. *sigh*
Did you watch the deleted scenes? Most notably the Nuclear Man 1 footage?
I like Superman 4. Christopher Reeve gave 150 percent to make it work.
I laughed at the stock footage of flying sequences; the "Rebuild the Great Wall of China" vision; at the fact that Nuclear Man had a mullet and Gene Hackman's voice.
Reeves tries to maintain a youthful look with a good workout and an overdose of black hair color.
Richard Pryor was Brainiac.
So whyle in production the budget was cut from 34 to just 17 mil. In a superman film what the heck can u use with just 17 mil its a joke. Then even after a test showing over 45 min was cut. The story could have been amazing but Chris reeve got screwed right over. What i love the most in this film is Supermans speach saying how the earth is his home to. Then nere the end saying its not his right to interfere. Theres some really good stuff in this film its a shame cannon destroyed it.
I haven't gone to see a Superman movie since Superman 2. I think I'll keep that record intact
The ONLY thing I halfway enjoyed in this was the scene in which Clark and Superman both had dayes at a party, and had to appear together, simply because I had read so many SilveAAge reprints in which that kind of thing was a central theme.
As far as I am concerned, the only good thing about Superman IV is its OST. I find it quite entertaining.
Even the fight with Nuclear Man was underwhelming. Except, of course.. "DESTROY SUPERMAN!"
That upper flag (the one above the rainbowy one) you have in your avatar. I've seen a lot of muscular men with big cars and small shirts flaunt it around - not that there's anything wrong with that, but people might think that you're gay
it takes some serious love of the character and the prior films to sit through Superman 4 even with nostalgia. there is so many things wrong with this film.. its like the writers of SUPERFREINDS took over the logic in this film. I mean breathing in space???
people knock comedy of 3. well go back and watch 3hr cut of superman 1. It is silly in places so as trilogy they are tonely the same
One would think ars dealers would be HAPPIEST to see nukes go-- Say what you will, they have helped to prevent wars at times.

cripes Superman III is a 100 times better than 4. You have the great smallville return. Evil superman. Lana.... all superman 4 had was.... NOTHIING. i was 1 of 5 people in the theater that first weekend in 1987. Reeves was good actually- its EVERYONE and thing else thats terrible. thats including Gene Hackman. Nuclear man was terrible too.
Story was alright though Christopher Reece the only tell shinning light&went against Tom Mankiewicz to not have Superman solve the worlds problems..

How fucked up that this was made 9 years after the first movie yet the effects were much worse lol. It's still enjoyable cheese though.

I've only seen Superman IV once, on VHS only, and only once. It was a piece of shit! This was just a terrible movie, given more so due to the fact that it was a Superman movie. I honestly think that this movie almost killed Christopher Reeves' career. It certainly killed the Superman movie franchise for a long time. Hoping that Man Of Steel will revive the franchise. I have high hopes for it.
If this film is so bad why don't they remake it are release it again instead remaking the origin like "Man of Steel", which is a waste because EVERYONE knows his origin. Plus didn't he "RETURN" in 2006???

It's cool that you like this film, but come on.. This is the worst superman movie of them all.. Nothing make sense in this flick.. Richard Donner said he tried to talk Christopher Reeve's out of going with this story.. You can't have Superman flying around and and basically pushing nations to bend to his rules..
