    I didn't watch the last duel but its obviously realistic, they even had a blue filter over the lense to recreate the dull grey sunlight that we were stuck with before we invented the modern sun

      The last duel was probably the closest film we have to a real fight. The Last King too. everything outside and inside of that is just cosmetic.

      The Last Duel(and The King) is a FANTASTIC movie! I cant rant and rave about it enough, to be honest. Its probably one of the most brutal and gritty medieval movies I've ever seen.
      But hey, to be fair about the blue filter, I live in Washington state, it looks like that nearly year round. Grey, dark, cold, muddy and rainy. The sun barely ever comes out during the winter, leaving us with very short, dark days, and long cold and rainy nights.

Many channels are rather over the top and ridiculous in their commentary, but you deliver information in a very professional manner. Also, I just want to say that you're very talented; you are obviously very skilled in your art, your videos are very well edited, and you go out of your way to speak a foreign language all so that you can reach a broader audience.

    When it comes to sword strikes, while swords in reality are far from the clunky and heavy things they are often depicted as, they still are bars of solid metal. I like to compare it to being hit with a crowbar. Even if you are in padded armour that protects you from most of the blunt force trauma and the sharp edges, it´s not something comfortable or ignorable.

If you strike an opponent with a longsword on the side his bascinet sure it won't magically slice through the metal. I love that you chose "The Last Duel" and "The King" as your references of choice. Those are my two most favorite medieval knight movies of all times, because I always thought the fights to be more gritty, dirty and just gross. Making them more realistic in my eyes. In both movies, the most consequential fights end with them rolling around in mud trying to stab/beat each other to death. I feel like that's exactly how most knight duels ended, that is, if it was a duel to death. I've read that most duels went till one side capitulated, which the noble was then ransomed back to his people. Idk how true that is, but seems true to me, as most people are going to choose to live when they realize they cant win.

    Roman Polanski’s adaptation of ‘The Tragedy of Macbeth’ (1971) has an impressive duel at the finale.
    I think it’s regarded as the first properly choreographed knights in armour duel on screen.

    how did knights duel historically?
    mostly it was:
    1. highly professional, very good knowledge of their weapons and their body
    2. tried not to kill or maim each other
    3. tried not to dishonor each other
    4. show-off is probably allowed but not valued

    • @MasoTrumoi
      @MasoTrumoi ปีที่แล้ว

      The Last Duel is about a real historical duel, possibly the last judicial duel or at least the last we have records of. In the situation it is completely understandable that they would and did fight to the death, because it was a judicial duel to determine if one had raped the wife of the other (his defense was it was consensual adultery). The husband won, hence it was judicially determined to be rape. Regardless of the truth, the obvious intensity of such a case along with previous animosity between the two fighters makes it clear why death was the preferred outcome.
      That said, the details of the case and Ridley Scott's involvement was also why I didn't watch it. I was already tired to death of every single Historical Medieval film from Hollywood being obsessed with rape, especially after the fantasy series Game of Thrones. I waited for reviews and they were lackluster on it overall.
      That said, nice to hear the fight scene was mostly good. Maybe I'll watch that clip so I don't have to watch a rape scene being the focal point and reenacted three times in this movie.

    @sleep-of-ages 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    HEMA-ist here. I want to applaud your efforts and the thought you've put into making the most realistic depictions of medieval armoured combat possible! I have one small technical question:
    I notice when you go to exploit a gap such as the armpit or neck) with your dagger, you tend to make repeated stabs ("shanking" style) at the chainmail undercoat instead of positioning the dagger a single time and DRIVING it in (which is sometimes depicted in the sources as being supported by the offhand).
    I assume in reality there would be room for both approaches, and have not personally tested either, but do you think repeatedly stabbing at chain mail would be as effective as trying to burst through the rings with a single concerted drive? Shanking has the advantage of speed and surprise, as you need the guy to be pretty locked down in order to concentrate your full force on a single powerful thrust, but the sources show this as taking place usually on the ground once the opponent has been taken down and largely immobilized (with pins/joint locks), and I believe this is how they chose to show it in the Last Duel (not that that proves anything).
    Really curious about your thoughts on this small technical question, as you are one of the few people even within HEMA who seem concerned with this aspect of things.

    • @dequitem
      @dequitem  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yes pushing the blade in an immobilized target is the best way to reach the heart for an kill, shanking is also viable, can break through mail and can hurt the opponent very hard. We often do shanking because it's less dangerous, if the blade or rounded tip breaks of. At the end we wanna simulate the death and don't kill out friends. Also a Blade of a dagger with a pointy tip would stuck in the mail, the rounded tips don't get stuck and. It's hard to imitate the pushing. You often only slide about the gambeson, this look like garbage! I don't fight with actors I fight with friends, hemaists and buhurtfighters, they all are not used to finish someone on the ground and often forget to end the fight rightly. I think that's the biggest problem. And when they try to act the last step it often looks like bad acting and I hate bad acting!

      I like back spikes more than hammers. That why I love halberds more than poleaxes. They are not very effektiv against plate armor but nice for gabs and chain mail or hocking the opponent. But the wracking against the helmet is less than with poleaxes :/

    True people are harder to kill than most people realise. ..
    Heart , through eye into brain and jugular are game over..Or an artery ..Some people have died by being stabbed in the leg from arterial bleeding..
    Others have taken 20 to 30 to the chest back and arms and survived.
    It was in the news not long ago , A young girl was stabbed about 100 times and left all night in a park until a dog walker found her in the morning.And she survived.
    So sick that someone would do that.. A disabled girl too i think it said . What a survivor..
