This makes me think of the brief attempt to revive shields, both for pikers & for dedicated targetiers, in the Dutch military during the early 17th century. Edward Cecil wrote the following about the 6lb shields for pikers: "In marching it hangs behind: about ones back, the neck and the body, with little trouble. And being to be used it is turned before with the motion only of the left shoulder, and for applying it selfe as a man will, to the defense of all but the head and legs." Your demonstration in this video gives a sense of how wearing & readying these shields probably worked.
I wish more TH-cam comments were like yours, Informative, backed by evidence, and appropriate to the subject at hand. As an archaeologist, such comments please me enormously.

as a shield lover, i too love your in depth explanation of them. apparently im a unicorn for loving them as much as a do, but perhaps with more light shone on its utility, more peopoe may come to enjoy the shield, rather than brushing us off as cowards.
I'm a big fan of broadsword and targe. Non armored or some armor the sheild is absolutely amazing. Everyone kinda knows that tho. I think movies and TV makes the idea of a single sword or duel weilding very popular.
I am not knowledgeable in medieval combat duel but on a battlefield scanario where expecting enemies have a lot of archers/crossbowmen- my ideal shield is a fully armoured ally knight with a big shield in front of me.
Very interesting! Honestly, I thought that a shield, at least a large one, was a large hinderence, and that more protection would come with a rather high cost. Also I must admit, that I thought, that the shield strapped to the arm had fewer disadvantages. It make also sence, that the sword and dagger, and later rapier and dagger, got popular. Like a flexible alternative to a shield in a duel. Than on a battlefield, it was a complete other thing. Great video. Thank you.
In duels u often use weapons, that you learned to fight with. A dagger is better and more versatile in civilian context. If u are more used to a combination u use it more often in duels...
OUTSTANDING video with excellent use of short video clips that show the use of the weapons and armor and shields. While other channels may show us the book illustrations, and talk about the weapons, and still others will have some static displays of weapons, and others will show “reenactments” that do some limited poking at one another (for safety reasons), I think your channel takes this to another level. Your videos of the two knights in duels, shows us a very brutal type of combat, and I am impressed by the many strikes shown, the force used, the number of times the knight is taken to the ground, and the use of various weapons and grappling tactics. To be blunt, I got a much more visceral feel for “combat” by watching your videos that show the duels. This is VERY different from seeing some of the sport HEMA demonstrations and other channels. I think your channel is truly on another level, and really eye-opening. Thanks for producing the videos as you do, and I especially like how you show the old illustrations along with duel examples (in the castle setting is nice too). Bravo! (Subscribed)
The way you handle the shield with the neck strap is so clean. The clips from the duels where its flipped onto, and off of the shoulder were great but the effortless push onto the back for the inevitable grappling was so good I had to watch it a few times. I feel like I've been getting more & more into medieval arms and armor as of late thanks to channels like yours and Robinswords; you for the fights, weapons, and armor in a gritty and brutally accurate historic portrayal, and Robin for a showcase of modern duels and weapons in a more casual setting. Makes me wish I wasn't in such a dead zone both monetarily and location wise, otherwise I'd love to learn more about this stuff first hand.
Welp, you did change my mind on shields. I think I would rather use a sword and dagger. I would use the it as mentioned in my previous comment with the exception that now I have another pointy end.

I have many questions as I’m very interested by medieval stuff, so if anyone would mind answering, that would be great. Thanks! 1. Is there importance to how a shield is strapped? Does a certain position grant more control? (Vertically, diagonally, horizontal, etc.) 2. Is a diagonally strapped triangular shield practical? I would assume it’s heavy, but it gives a wide range protection and the strap gives better control against hits (I think). Also you can punch with its corner, thus making it better(???) for offensive shield strikes. It’s a wild idea. 3. Where do you… put the guige in battle? Say I would like to be able to maneuver my shield freely and not have it be restrained by the guige around my neck when I’m fighting, where do I put it so it doesn’t get grabbed/cut/in the way? Or do I just let it hang?
1. Preverence 2. Triangular shields are no offense weapons. The diagonal strabed helps tu align the top edge with your visor. 3. Just let it hang and when it's get cut, it's gone.
I've watched so many of your vids and it just makes me feel like the priority should be to take the fight to the ground and get into mount on your opponent over anything else. it seems like most of the blunt impacts are dodged or rolled off and when you grapple halfsworded it almost feels like it might be better to set up a foot sweep rather than try to bind up with you're opponent half sworded trying to get into gaps. ofc i dont have any armored fighting experience but as someone who has grappling experience, it really feels like the takedown is the most important part. using heavy impacts seems more useful in a big melee than in a 1v1. thrusting for gaps seems like a less guaranteed way to end your opponent than taking them to the ground.
I would say it's the opposite. Yes finding gabs is easyer if your opponent is on the ground under your control, but don't forget it's sometimes a hard way to bring someone down, when he's trying to stab you. I think in 30 % of my takedowns, my opponent stab me mid air in vulnerable places, bevor I even have a chance to control him. Yes I am mostly better in wrestling than my opponents, but most fights end with both people standing. Often it doesn't look flashy and I don't use the footage to end a video but halfswording is defenetly the most effective way to kill a knight!

I think many others have echoed my thoughts, but your videos are absolutely amazing for illustrating what real armored combat would've been like. I find that a lot of videos about medieval combat (or videos about HEMA) are speculative and from individuals that haven't competed or trained in armored combat. I've been dying to see a video about the use of shields in the context of armored combat, and this video answered so many of my questions. A few question I have regarding shields in armored combat: -Are shields useful at all for pinning an opponent? In many of your videos, you use two-handed weapons and eventually switch to a dagger or poignard when grappling. I'd imagine that a shield could be useful to "sit" on an opponent, blocking their range of motion, while giving your other hand free reign to grab your poignard and drive it into a gap in the armor. -What about tackling or charging an opponent with a shield? I imagine this wouldn't make too much difference from tackling an opponent with only armor, but the flat surface does mean they have less leverage on your body during the contact? Definitely subscribed and rooting for your channel to grow. Amazing work.
First. An attached shield is always a hinderence in grappling and pinning your opponent. Second. The shield can help in tackling but didn't help to not get leverage on you.

As a lefty, i wonder: is shield as effective, when fighting a left handed opponent? Or is it more of a liability, since the strikes would mostly come from the other side? And in general what was your experience, when armor fighting a left handed enemy?

I have to say, you've pretty much got it there. People usually over look the shield. There is one of your points need a little fine tuning, but like I say, pretty much spot on. Much more knowledgeable than Matt Easton's videos on shields where he completely missed the vital point of the strap around the neck....but then again, that's just to be expected from him as he lacks actual practical experience.
I think he only forgot the stabbed version because he is an expert in unarmored combat and there are no strabed shields comon. What point needs fine tuning. What have I missed?
@@dequitemYeah...'armchair expert' 😂😂😂 Not forgot, but lacking the knowledge of the STRAPPED shield. I learned it from a Frenchman who was an expert on the Normans. The technique was invented by the Normans I believe, and was never surpassed in versatility, you may be able to learn it in your research.

I have to say i love your gorget...is it based on a historical example as its construction looks eastern? ...earliest stand along european gorgets i have seen are 1480s i think, German, on statues. Off topic question: I know when you are sparring with colleague you can use sword that are not so sharp etc., but when you or your opponent is using hammer or morning star, how you make this weapon not be as deadly as it is in real combat? The wheight of hammer must give you nice stars even with helmet on?.
For medium shields, why were central grips more preferable than the shield being strapped to the arm? I had assumed that the strapped would be better since it would be easier to half sword with a strapped shield versus a center gripped shield.
What do you think about goblin slayer arm mounted targe? He uses it higher than normal shields leaving half of his hand exposed, could you use it with 2 handed weapons?
If you were a knight and only would fight duels, what would be your go-to equipment (also based on what you wield best). And, in general for duels, no shield or shield? If it were up to you
Very educational thank you. I had two questions. 1) shield strapped to neck what if opponent grapples against you and controls your shield by the neck strap 2) in most art armored man at arms seem to use 1 handed sword most even in half sword, why do you think that is?
1. Not a big problem. Shields are hard to grab. 2. Most knight fight on horseback and used onehanded swords for fighting there. These swords also work fine in halfswording.
Many German-region martial-arts manuals should longswords in the hands of mounted men-at-arms, such as Paulus Hector Mair's. Albrecht Dürer's Knight, Death, and the Devil would be another famous example. There are also lots of longswords worn by fully armored figures in effigies & brasses. I'm not so sure that most men-at-arms in period images used one-handed swords. Perhaps in, say, Spain, but probably not in German lands.
At 7:00 the shields have a slot in each. Do you think it's possible to put one's weapon through that slot and sort of half- sword with it? It may provide extra leverage and stability. Or maybe it's to catch the opponent's weapon?
Mr. Dequitem, in your expert opinion what is the best one-handed weapon against a fully-armored opponent wearing plate armor with chainmail underneath?
I know you're not gonna be able to perceive such things at the moment so well but how often would you say you hit the right place during your sparring? Because it really looks hard to go through the vulnerable areas of your opponent, specially since it often leads to grappling. since you don't use a pointy blade for obvious reasons, how many of the duels would you say should have ended fast? Also, the blunt weapons, are they in the original weight? It really looks like a dangerous activity even when going the safer way Just out of curiosity, since to me it always feels knights duels would end up in grappling and on the floor.
Yes and no. Yes it's inspired by the bretonnian shield, but the picture is original a historical image from historical shields in Russia and eastern Europe. It's not my shield.
Of course, but if the dagger is your only weapon in the duel, then I would take the shield in a zentral grip, so that you can throw it away when the fight go to the ground!
Try looking at Oscar's stuff over at Virtual Fechtschule. He has several video of sparring in Landsknecht half armour against unarmoured or more heavily armoured opponents as a running test to see how effective such a middle of the road armour would be.
@@dequitem An unscripted Landsknecht fight would be so cool but also dangerous. That seems to be the whole point for Landsknecht. Those guys were crazy to fight wars with such minimal armor.
@@dequitem I see. Thanks for answering. Wouldn't it be a bit unnecessary though? Aren't the only things dangerous to a man in armor blows to the head from a mace/hammer and thrusts into gaps? I'm pretty sure a skilled wielder of a two-handed weapon can make sure to defend against those while having a better weapon.
Sheilds are awesome but man. In these videos whenever halfswording is done with the longsword, it seems especially nasty against any weapon when armored up

Hard to tell. Seems eqal. The twohanded sword isn't that much better than a longsword, but I like my Zweihänders a little bit more!

As a lefty, i wonder: is shield as effective, when fighting a left handed opponent? Or is it more of a liability, since the strikes would mostly come from the other side? And in general what was your experience, when armor fighting a left handed enemy?

По-моему, даже в некоторых исторических фехтбуках были изображения, на которых гарда длинного меча была возможно заточена. Позволяет ли это потенциально поражать гардой уязвимые места брони, в подмышках, паху?

great video! i have a question about one of the armors: do brigandine cuisses (what your sparring friend with the red brigandine wears) exists or is it just leather on top of plate for decoration?
It's wool over hardened steel plates. The wool hides the gabs and overlapping parts and hold the small pieces together. It's a historical replica.

I have to say, you've pretty much got it there. People usually over look the shield. There is one of your points need a little fine tuning, but like I say, pretty much spot on. Much more knowledgeable than Matt Easton's videos on shields where he completely missed the vital point of the strap around the neck....but then again, that's just to be expected from him as he lacks actual practical experience.
I think he only forgot the stabbed version because he is an expert in unarmored combat and there are no strabed shields comon. What point needs fine tuning. What have I missed?
@@dequitemYeah...'armchair expert' 😂😂😂 Not forgot, but lacking the knowledge of the STRAPPED shield. I learned it from a Frenchman who was an expert on the Normans. The technique was invented by the Normans I believe, and was never surpassed in versatility, you may be able to learn it in your research.

Yes I found many paintings of Norman's with stabbed shields but my focus was the late medival period 15th and 16th century.

Off topic question: I know when you are sparring with colleague you can use sword that are not so sharp etc., but when you or your opponent is using hammer or morning star, how you make this weapon not be as deadly as it is in real combat? The wheight of hammer must give you nice stars even with helmet on?.

For medium shields, why were central grips more preferable than the shield being strapped to the arm? I had assumed that the strapped would be better since it would be easier to half sword with a strapped shield versus a center gripped shield.
It's better to let go your shield in Halfswording if you have it on your arm.
What do you think about goblin slayer arm mounted targe?
He uses it higher than normal shields leaving half of his hand exposed, could you use it with 2 handed weapons?

With a small shield around my neck I go for twohanded sword/ estoc or poleaxe with dagger.

I had two questions.
1) shield strapped to neck what if opponent grapples against you and controls your shield by the neck strap
2) in most art armored man at arms seem to use 1 handed sword most even in half sword, why do you think that is?
1. Not a big problem. Shields are hard to grab.
2. Most knight fight on horseback and used onehanded swords for fighting there. These swords also work fine in halfswording.
Many German-region martial-arts manuals should longswords in the hands of mounted men-at-arms, such as Paulus Hector Mair's. Albrecht Dürer's Knight, Death, and the Devil would be another famous example. There are also lots of longswords worn by fully armored figures in effigies & brasses. I'm not so sure that most men-at-arms in period images used one-handed swords. Perhaps in, say, Spain, but probably not in German lands.

Did the knights use English bucklers with long spikes? It may have been difficult to thrust the spikes into gaps in the armor.
Yes but I don't think the spikes were weapons.
History of course has firmly decided that the best knightly shield for armoured duels is the poleaxe.

At 7:00 the shields have a slot in each. Do you think it's possible to put one's weapon through that slot and sort of half- sword with it? It may provide extra leverage and stability. Or maybe it's to catch the opponent's weapon?

Onehanded sword with a narrow reenforced tip! After that a Dagger and third place is a warhammer.
The best shield is the one you don't have to carry.( xv century full armored reenactor here )
They are not that heavy and a knight only have to carry it in battle.

I know you're not gonna be able to perceive such things at the moment so well but how often would you say you hit the right place during your sparring? Because it really looks hard to go through the vulnerable areas of your opponent, specially since it often leads to grappling. since you don't use a pointy blade for obvious reasons, how many of the duels would you say should have ended fast? Also, the blunt weapons, are they in the original weight? It really looks like a dangerous activity even when going the safer way
Just out of curiosity, since to me it always feels knights duels would end up in grappling and on the floor.
50 percent of my knight fights would end with one wounded knight after 2 or 3 thrusts. So very quick!

Yes and no. Yes it's inspired by the bretonnian shield, but the picture is original a historical image from historical shields in Russia and eastern Europe. It's not my shield.

Of course, but if the dagger is your only weapon in the duel, then I would take the shield in a zentral grip, so that you can throw it away when the fight go to the ground!

Not much!
Try looking at Oscar's stuff over at Virtual Fechtschule. He has several video of sparring in Landsknecht half armour against unarmoured or more heavily armoured opponents as a running test to see how effective such a middle of the road armour would be.

@@dequitem An unscripted Landsknecht fight would be so cool but also dangerous. That seems to be the whole point for Landsknecht. Those guys were crazy to fight wars with such minimal armor.
Given how quickly full harness combat turn into grappling, not sure how useful shields are, may even be a hindrance.

@@dequitem I see. Thanks for answering. Wouldn't it be a bit unnecessary though? Aren't the only things dangerous to a man in armor blows to the head from a mace/hammer and thrusts into gaps? I'm pretty sure a skilled wielder of a two-handed weapon can make sure to defend against those while having a better weapon.
Always good for some weapons with blunt force to have some extra layer.
Sheilds are awesome but man. In these videos whenever halfswording is done with the longsword, it seems especially nasty against any weapon when armored up
