When you switch from prime to paint, it's important not to have the motor running as this will eventually damage the switch. Also reversing the tip still lets material flow through the tip and causing excessive wear through the tip when in actuality you can just remove the tip being very careful not to have any direct injection by the spray of the material and it will cycle through a lot faster.
Thanks so much for the comment. I sure hope I am doing it right. This machine should last for a good while. I believe I will try and repair the old sprayer.
@@vilsan.r.9875 That's why you have filters in the machine and gun's handle. You have to clean those after each use and replace them from time to time.
I strain the paint every time I use it. Even the filters in the gun get clogged and reduce the pressure I am spraying. This leads to the tip getting clogged in my experience
@@MattFreytag Good video about the sprayer. I am considering to buy it. I have G19 right now and for larger jobs it is too small. How do you like your 390 PC PC far?

Fyi- so the instructions say to clean the pump for the very first time with mineral spirits to remove the factory oils, then with water after. Dont know how much it actually matters but thats what the directions say.
Thanks for the info. I have also heard from many painters that it’s good to run some paint thinner or mineral spirits thru the pump before storage instead of storing with water remnants in the pump. I would think this would keep it from rusting or seizing up and prob do the same thing the Graco pump armor would do.
one tip use some vaseline on all your threads house to gun and hose to the machine and your tip gaurd and your filter on your machine paint wont stick to it its much easier to take off and clean aswell
I don’t understand why painters back roll , it defeats the purpose of spraying which is to be faster than rolling. As a painter that does both spray and traditional brush and roll work , if you’re planning on back rolling then opt out of using the sprayer as it will cut into your time having to prepare for use and clean the sprayer afterwards. Might as well just cut and roll . Even faster when you use the bigger rolls like 14 to 18 inch , especially if you’re just running primer on brand new drywall/sheetrock.
Alex Sandoval I cant speak for other painters but there are a few reasons I back roll. One reason is to even out the paint on the wall. Second it creates roller texture/stipple. This helps when touching up at the end of a build. Also I can spray and back roll a house way quicker than I can cut in and roll the walls no matter what size roller I am using. Personally I would classify backfilling as an extra step that would create a better overall finish. Those are my opinions. Thanks for the comment and for watching the video.
Matt Freytag perfectly understandable, some clients would want roller texture for sure and I suppose it does help with the touch ups in the latter parts of the job . You don’t have to roll at all depending on the quality finish you want. The sprayer doesn’t typically spray a perfectly even coat so the roller helps even out the coat and add a slight roller stipple texture to make it easier to touch up later. Thanks.
You shouldn’t normally have to thin the paint to spray in the sprayer unless you are using a really fine tip or if it’s one of the less powerful models and it’s not spraying a good pattern. If you were to thin it I would start out with small amounts and mix well.

I really don’t know the answer to that question. Someone with more experience needs to answer this. My best guess would be to tape out a section so that you wouldn’t see the seams and spray the whole section.
Yup Yes I’m sure you could do it that way but I wouldn’t. The quality of the first coat sets the basis for the quality of the preceding coats so I prefer to go ahead and backroll from the beginning
This is what I do...spray PVA primer and back roll next 2 coats....works fine....primer soaks into walls pretty well so doesnt leave much texture anyway....once wall is sealed than texture starts to build up
@@yup3398 am not a painting a contractor though I do alot of painting...mostly residential....I am a GC sure its good machine but you would have to weigh out what you typically spray to find out best overall fit for you.....I use HVLP guns alot too for fine finish when overspray is an issue.....if you can only have 1 sprayer find one that covers most of what you will do

ebenezerENlosangeles I disagree with not back rolling. Not sure about where you are located but here the backroll helps even out the texture between raw Sheetrock and drywall mud on a typical finish.
390 395 models spray .54 gallons per minute a gallon of paint woul cover average on 320 to 340 sq feet I'm not saying this are the perfect numbers because it also depends on the size of tip you are using but you can do the number with this info I hope Cheers from North Hollywood California
Do 390 have a transducer in them I messed up cause it was covered in paint when I bought the part and watched the 395 transducer I realized that was a different sprayer can you help.
Do you really need to back roll primer? The new dry walls suck it up really well, right? You guarentee roller lines now. When you put your finish coat on, you roll it for texture. In my opinion, no need to backroll primer.
aaron anderson First off thanks for your comment and watching my video. I really can’t answer the technical question of ‘Do you really need to back roll primer’. This is just the way I have been doing it for years. I do know this. In my experience it helps even out the primer or paint that you are spraying on the wall to get better coverage since sometimes the spray pattern is not perfectly consistent depending on the spray rig, paint thickness, or your actual technique. Also it is just one more coat of rolling texture to make the dry wall and mud joints more consistent when the light is shining on them.
gooch47856 Good question! I only spray latex water based paints through this spray rig so no I don’t use thinner on it. I only use water and properly oil the piston. Thanks for the comment.
Wow talk about a speedy response! I just bought the same pump. Only reason I ask is because I have had a couple painters tell me that letting water sit in the pump can corrode the inside of the pump.
gooch47856 Yes I believe you are right. Graco makes a product called pump armor you can use for storage but I have heard of running some thinner through it to keep everything lubricated. I have not done so yet but I’m glad you mentioned it.
Hi Matt, when you say you turn your tip back, what is it for ? Is it for saving the tip ? And that way you dont have to take it out for saving your tip ? Thanks for your help !
Steve Beaulieu. Actually the process I did at the beginning of running the water and paint through the gun should have been done with the tip removed. The material would have went thru faster and you would avoid and unnecessary wear on the tip. They do wear out from the paint acting like an abrasive and blowing out the inside of the tip making it spray differently than intended. As for turning the tip around! The reasoning for this is to blow out any trash or debris to unclog the tip then spin it back around to continue painting. Hopefully this answered your question. Thanks for the comment and for watching the vide.
I got me a 390 pc and honestly I regret it not because it whas a bad machine It did more that a little pony should do but I end up buying a 490pc with in a year a litle more money but it has a 1 hp and a better pressure control set also brushless motor and sprays more per minute all that for around $400 more the 490 you can use it on exteriors and you don't hear a little motor being over worked dont get me wrong my 390 painted a 2 storage house but like I say I know I was burning the little pony If you can extend you're buffer a little I recommend a Ultra Max 490pc Cheers from North Hollywood California
ebenezerENlosangeles I don’t really paint that much so I don’t see the need to spend any more cash. I painted the exterior of my house as well with this machine and it ran just fine with no problems. I do not feel it was overworked at all but I have not used any larger machine so it’s hard to give an accurate comparison. Thanks for the info.
I can't remember exactly how long I have had it but prob 8 -10 years. I only used it on occasion but prob sprayed over 100 gallons thru it. It still runs but does not suck the paint into it anymore. I was gonna work on it but haven't gotten around to it yet.
The harbor freight Krause is a better machine than cheap graco HD sells.....I had that same graco and it was pos....harbor freight is still goin....but pc 390 is what am looking at next.....if I painted more would be no brainer but it comes and goes so
I agree. The one I got from HD did last a while but once it was done there was no fixing it. In retrospect to me buying the 390 pc I wish I would have gotten the 395 Ultra because of a few extra features but the PPG store did not have them in stock and I needed to spray a spec house immediately.
@@MattFreytag if you have 1 trade buy the very best you can....in the end you'll save money......I am a GC but just sprayed a 2 story house with harbor freight airless.....if I sprayed everyday I would buy a $1500 sprayer and have a cheap one as backup.....same as framing, plumbing, tile, etc....just having a machine quit in middle of job costs too much money/time

자세한 설명 감사합니다
Sounds Good!
How to do touch up on sprayed paint?
I really don’t know the answer to that question. Someone with more experience needs to answer this. My best guess would be to tape out a section so that you wouldn’t see the seams and spray the whole section.
Good luck with that, especially low sheen or eggshell paint, you better paint the whole wall
You spray. Hand helds are great for this purpose if not much touch up to do.
Could you not just spray with primer and only backroll the final finish coats?
Yup Yes I’m sure you could do it that way but I wouldn’t. The quality of the first coat sets the basis for the quality of the preceding coats so I prefer to go ahead and backroll from the beginning
@@MattFreytag okay thank you!
This is what I do...spray PVA primer and back roll next 2 coats....works fine....primer soaks into walls pretty well so doesnt leave much texture anyway....once wall is sealed than texture starts to build up
@@kirkdunn1379 thanks mate. Would you recommend the graco 390 as a good all round machine. Mostly walls and trim using fflp?
@@yup3398 am not a painting a contractor though I do alot of painting...mostly residential....I am a GC
sure its good machine but you would have to weigh out what you typically spray to find out best overall fit for you.....I use HVLP guns alot too for fine finish when overspray is an issue.....if you can only have 1 sprayer find one that covers most of what you will do
Nice
Thanks
Здравствуйте. А сколько стоит такая машына 395 у вас
Which tip is that?
It is the Rac X 515 tip. That’s what I use to spray and backroll primer.
where's the back stitching? Your backroll technique is gonna leave flying v's if you apply your top coat like your prime
Matthew Fernandez Never heard of the term back stitching nor have I ever heard anyone in the industry around here use that term.
@@MattFreytag back stitching is when you roll straight up and before you get to the top roll to the move over an inch or so towards your wet edge to cover your roll marks from the roller dragging the paint up you qlwYs want your roller marks uniform all same direction not flying v's from rolling at an angle you see the up down strokes
Matthew Fernandez I gotcha homie.
So what’s the point you have to go over it with a roller
Hashooma toy fun Alfarawi It’s just what you do
To achieve a more leveled coat on PVA primer wen you'll get more experience spraying w
You dont need to back roll is jest primer
ebenezerENlosangeles I disagree with not back rolling. Not sure about where you are located but here the backroll helps even out the texture between raw Sheetrock and drywall mud on a typical finish.
Hello. I am from Algeria and I want to know how many cubic meters this machine does in 8 hours
Behih Sidahmed I am sorry but I do not know that information. Maybe you could look on the Graco website and find that out. Thanks.
390 395 models spray .54 gallons per minute a gallon of paint woul cover average on 320 to 340 sq feet I'm not saying this are the perfect numbers because it also depends on the size of tip you are using but you can do the number with this info I hope Cheers from North Hollywood California
ebenezerENlosangeles Thanks for the info!
Why did you roll after spraying?
It’s just what you do!
Do 390 have a transducer in them I messed up cause it was covered in paint when I bought the part and watched the 395 transducer I realized that was a different sprayer can you help.
patrick quinlan I am sorry but I am not sure what a transducer is or if my sprayer has one. Thanks for the comment. I wish I could better help you.
How do you replace pressure control valve do you have a video on that
How do you take off the pressure adjuster
I’m really not sure I haven’t had to do any maintenance on it yet.
Always backroll. Always, always backroll new drywall.
I agree ☝️
Yes, Always back roll. It's a must.
For Sure!
Do you run thinner threw the pump after cleaning?
gooch47856 Good question!
I want to buy a genuine machine, where can I buy it?
No sure!
Thanks a lot Matt :)
Can oil paints be used with that?? Or is it only water based paints..
Yes it can be used with oil paints. Not sure which tips you would use. I choose not to use oil with mine since the cleanup would be messy.
How to avoid a lot of over spray?
francisco ballona you just have to use drop cloths and mask everything off you don’t want paint on.
Use a low pressure tip and mask
Bro I have the green low pressure tips. I still get overspray but not as much
Wow a painter does pole sanding final coat! I thought only mud guys do that?
H B I’m no professional painter but to pole sand between coats definitely equals better finish.
390s are workhorses, IF you take care of them!
Help me
Iam painter from iran
I need paking for reapir graco 390
Tank you
You should be able to find it online?
Hi! What happend to old Graco sprayer? How long did it last?
I can't remember exactly how long I have had it but prob 8 -10 years. I only used it on occasion but prob sprayed over 100 gallons thru it. It still runs but does not suck the paint into it anymore. I was gonna work on it but haven't gotten around to it yet.
Matt Freytag it prob just needs to be re packed. It’s fairly cheap!
Yo tengo una 390 y ermosa por 9 años. Eso si linpiala cadaves de unarla
Thanks
haha why roller? XD you using spraying
Why not homie!
Run mineral spirits through it to flush out factory oil
Too late now! Lol 😂
Ya I'm sure it's fine.
@@MattFreytag if you have 1 trade buy the very best you can....in the end you'll save money......I am a GC but just sprayed a 2 story house with harbor freight airless.....if I sprayed everyday I would buy a $1500 sprayer and have a cheap one as backup.....same as framing, plumbing, tile, etc....just having a machine quit in middle of job costs too much money/time
@@kirkdunn1379 I heard that. I build houses but I find my self doing 2-4 spray jobs a year
@@MattFreytag same here...probably less actually....am a GC and painting is small part of the job.....if I did more I would get nice graco or titan....hard to justify cost for me....think my Krause is on its last leg, just finished a complete exterior and it barely worked at end.....good enough, lol
pfff, I was ready to purchase this spray and that is why I came here, everything was perfect until you got the roller on your hands. Really? I have to spend 1.500£ just to put the paint on the wall and after to use a roller? No fking way. Thank you for this video and for stopping me from do a big mistake.
I am old school roller & brush guy. I just hired a painter because i was lazy to paint interior. Know wonder why 2 coats didn't cover well. They must have used a paint gun & charge me extra for 3 coats of paint. Unfortunately, i could not be there to watch how they painted. Never ever again hire another painter they all shortcut if you're not watch them step by step.
H B Ok. Not really sure what you are implying here but I know plenty of honest good painters that use a spray gun and do the job right.
@@MattFreytag Not implying nothing negative. Just question the spray gun technique. Thanks you for showing me how gun works.
H B no problem
