The reason I use cloth is because I have tons of fabric scraps and I can keep reusing them as needed but I have used a small piece of paper towel before.
I use plain white cupcake liners when vac sealing jars. For flour and such, I use white paper lunch bags. Fill bag about 3/4 full and fold over the top. Insert into a FoodSaver bag, upside down. Folded edge lets air escape from the bag while holding back the powder. The flour "bricks" are then stored in buckets or totes. Recently bought the brake bleeder kit and am looking forward to using that, if/when the grid is down. Hope this is helpful for someone. Thanks for sharing.

It works for me all the time.
Thanks for this tip. I opened my big vacuum sealed jar of chia to refill my counter jar and wound up spraying chia around the kitchen as the air rushed in. I expect this would prevent that.
I have been able to fill the container with hot water and soften up the glue on the label and able to put the label on the jar, or part of the label on the jar. Much of the things I want some information on the jar. Sometimes I will use my phone to take a photo of part of the label, put that in my computer and print a label to put on the jar with some packing tape. I don't always remember what the liberals say about mixing it or using it. This gives me the information on the jar I seal.
I built a container out of six inch PVC that should handle a half gallon jar and repurposed a compressor out of my old frig for the vacuum. Thinking a lot of dry goods would fit better in larger jars. And saving the quarts for actual canning. We will see how well the larger size bottle holds a lid.
After ruining a brake bleeder with cinnamon, I stuffed a piece of a cotton ball in the tube of the next one I bought to prevent anything from getting into the pump

I find the reusable lids like Tattler and Harvest Guard work best for pressure canning, and single-use metal lida work best for water bath canning or dry goods vac pac storage. I feel like the reusable gaskets actually need the higher heat and pressure of the pressure canner to set a solid seal.
I have always done well with them in water bath canning such as tomatoes, peaches, plums. To me it was getting the right tightness on them now it is rare I lose a seal.
My brake bleeder meter is not facing where I can't see it. Mine is side way can I Unscrew it.. turning its face front. I don't want to break any seals. Thanks for any help. You were my go to for this question.🥰🤗 you know everything in my book😊

@@selfhealherbs13ms Do you mean the hose? I have only had to clean it once when Patrick used it for its original intended purpose to bleed brakes so I needed to clean out the brake fluid. I simply put in a sink of hot soapy water and swished back and forth numerous times to get the water to flow through it back and forth then rinsed well with hot water. Other than that, I have not needed to clean it as the hose only pulls out air, not fluids or powders (if you make sure to put some kind of cover or barrier over the top of the powders before putting on the lid. Freezer or leaving in packages but years ago I also did not have the food storage I have now being 2 years ahead or more so it is important that my goods can be stored for long term, not just for next month
I don’t know about the real butter powder. I’ve seen other people try it and they were like no. No it wasn’t the Hoosier Hill Farm brand. But the one point you brought up that I love is the bread. I have a couple bread recipes that are really quick in my bread machine that take butter. So I’m for sure going to get some of that. Very interesting about the lids working better once they have been utilized. I would think using the metal lids you could tell if you have a fail a lot easier than with the tattler lids also? Well thanks for these videos. I don’t know if it is the wise thing to do but I am going to get my herb storage up big-time. Also my powdered product storage up big time. The question is should I spend money on herbs or meat??? I also have some chocolate wafers that I need to vacuum seal. I forgot about them. I can’t eat sugar anymore so I just put them up on my way so I don’t see them all the time. I order my chocolate products from the Santa Barbara cocoa company have you ever heard of them? They are expensive but I’m going tell you what their products are super good. OK that’s about a dozen random thoughts in one comment!
I like the butter powder so far, have used it on popcorn, made a spread for toast, have tried sprinkling dry on fresh zucchini slices and have added to my yeast bread recipe and so far have been very happy with it. While nothing will ever fully compare to any fresh dairy, it is still a great option for long term storage
Captain Evie , my desire for chocolate exceeded my budget, Until I got just cocoa powder! Even the store brand! I just put a tablespoon or so of an oil like coconut or avocado, or even MCT (from coconut oil) in a bowl then add several tablespoons of cocoa powder and stir till the cocoa is all blended into the oil, then I add a sweetener. These days I add erythritol, a zero calorie sweetener. Though sugar works (of course). So I can add a few drops of peppermint or orange extract to flavor it. And some nut flour like almond, coconut, etc. With the erythritol and without the nut flour its still pretty low calorie and keto! Anyway I get my chocolate craving satisfied! (And my budget is happier, and I can control what is in it better!)
@Captain Evie. Both are important. Maybe half on herbs & half on meat. If you spend half your herb money on plants you use regularly that will go cut those costs within a couple years and you can give cuttings or plants as gifts too. ( I used to give a card with a note in it to friends for an herb they loved. Had a clipboard on wall where I put who I owed what to. Then when they were ready to divide I potted them up & gave them away. But that was many years ago.)
Kathleen Schaefer I do the same!!! I was watching this girls video and she made the chocolate and hated it! I was like I’m still going to try it. I use one heaping tablespoon of cocoa powder. 2 tablespoons of coconut oil and 1 tablespoon of maple syrup. Now coconut oil has so much saturated fat I have changed to some other oils. I’ve been using toasted almond oil and macadamia nut oil. Now you got a freeze that chocolate and eat it fast!!! But I’m like I don’t care. I will also mix all those nuts in with the correlating oil’s. I will also take the natural peanut butter from Costco. It gets all dry in the bottom of the jar. If you buy that peanut butter you know what I’m talking about. Well anyway maple syrup mixes up in it like a dream. You can work it into the peanut butter and then it’s still nice and dry but workable. How is the avocado oil does it set up well like the coconut oil? I haven’t tried that one yet.
Edie Boudreau Well I think the 50-50 suggestion is very good. Thank you very much. I don’t have much luck with growing herbs down here in the very bottom in South Carolina. It is just so Flippin hot that they don’t do very well or I’m just not very good at growing them out I don’t know? We live in a duplex. One side is like a shed. I know my husband and I are going to do an indoor hydroponic & Aquaponics system. So in the hydroponic system I was going to put herbs. Because I really spend a lot of money on dried and fresh herbs.

Thanks 4 the great video I just got a foodsaver really like it have tried any powders gonna have to give it a shot!!
Loved this video
Very helpful. Thank You.
Powdered milk lasts a long, long time this way.
I've run out of way's to use powder milk... Any suggestions
Good to know!
How long?
Thanks for this. I needed it. 💚
Thank you 💕
great video 👍 Blessings
Yep. Been doing this for years.
🤜🏻👍🤛🏻♡♡♡
...that grip strength though...
Haha :)
Lovin you!!
I add dissectant packs into some.
That's a good idea as an additional safety when dealing with powdered ingredients. Thanks!
That sounds like a great idea. I just got mine to use incase the grid is down. I'll sure add your tip to the notes I'm collecting on the bleeder. Love to vac seal with my FoodSaver, so now I'm working on backup plans. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you. You reinforced what I’ve been learning about storing powders. I was wondering if I should put my brown sugar in a vacuum sealed bag.
@This & That with Denise
I just put mine in half gallon mason jars with a small wrinkled potato on a napkin add lid. That's it. I don't like hard sugars & I live in a high humidity area. Oh and away from sun & away from outside walls by 6".
@@edieboudreau9637 you put the potato in with the sugar? What does that do?
@@lizziegreen9052 potato absorbs moisture. Great Gramma taught me that. The smallest scrawniest potato. Best is shriveled. But the others work too. Change it out about every 6 months.
Thank you for your wonderful content :)
Good video
I use cupcake cups.
👍 Sehr gut, danke Heidi!
@No salties & roos here. Ich haben Sie hier oft gesehen. Heidi ist wirklich wūnderbar!
Without using google translator, I actually understood that last part! haha Thanks Edie. I know very little German but my parents lived there for a couple of years while my dad was stationed there. One of my brothers was born there and my mom loved it there so much she named me in honor of her time there and friends she made
@@RainCountryHomestead oh Heidi I understand. One of my baby sisters was born there. Lol and you're welcome. The first part was just saying I've seen you here often.
@@RainCountryHomestead 👍
Dear Heidi!
A nice story for your family biography!
But I'm not German, only my mother tongue is German. I am Austrian and German is the first official language here, alongside the other languages of the minorities of our citizens. I speak English very well, only the grammar is not so good and there is also a problem with non-professional terminology, I was a restaurateur for 50 years. We learned the outdated Oxfort English at school, American business English I had to teach myself later. I find your channel wonderfully informative and with lots of interesting topics to keep in stock.
I wish you and your family all the best!
Greetings from Austria!
Thank you so much for this. Can you please do a vid on how to preserve/store nuts in a jar for long term without them going rancid?
I use a mini muffin paper.
Yep, many use those, I prefer fabric as I always have scraps on hand
Please make a video on making your Cowboy cookies.
Did that one a few years ago: th-cam.com/video/Q_JNiZzSDtA/w-d-xo.html

I find the reusable lids like Tattler and Harvest Guard work best for pressure canning, and single-use metal lida work best for water bath canning or dry goods vac pac storage. I feel like the reusable gaskets actually need the higher heat and pressure of the pressure canner to set a solid seal.
I have always done well with them in water bath canning such as tomatoes, peaches, plums. To me it was getting the right tightness on them now it is rare I lose a seal.
@@RainCountryHomestead I'll try again this year. It is definitely a learning curve. Thanks!
Where is your cowboy cookie recipe? I don’t see the link. Great video by the way.
All the links are located in the description box just below the video screen. Make sure you click on the word "...more" to open the description box
My brake bleeder meter is not facing where I can't see it. Mine is side way can I Unscrew it.. turning its face front. I don't want to break any seals. Thanks for any help. You were my go to for this question.🥰🤗 you know everything in my book😊
I really cannot say, yours may be different from mine, mine does not turn
@@RainCountryHomestead I think I saw yours.. looks alike. Red blk handle gold seal. I just thought I ask first. I did see another person who's his was turned like mine. And another had there's turn like yours. I just didn't want to start turning and end up breaking it. So I will just leave it. Like they say...if its not broke don't fix it 🤷 😆 Thank you for responding.
How do we clean the holes? do I take it off the break bleeder. Thank you much appreciate 🙏
Plus, nothing in the hose ever touches the food or can contaminate it since the air is coming out of the jar and through the hose, not the other way around
@@RainCountryHomestead Yes I did put the cupcake paper on top, I also put my Bayleaf in.. but thats me. Thanks. Whats weird I forgot to put the paper in on 2 jars, and it worked perfectly well no problem, and the next one I put the paper on top and didn't seal well, and it looks like flour got in the tube thats why I was asking, boy I had a mess😁kinda. Not that I haven done this before. But thank you sweet lady. I will do my clean up I'm OCD I see a speck and it bug's me.
Did you have to mention cowboy cookies???😁
haha! :D
good vid , was told to use cup cake wrappers for jars but have u tried vac sealing powders into bags , i want to buy spicers in bulk then repackage into small bags eg about 50 gram bags but worried about sucking the powder back into the machine and maybe clogging it , what would u suggest
I live in South Florida and worry about humanity and put dehumidifier pack in my to make sure that it is dry.
I have been following you for a while now and love your videos. I have been trying to get the vacuum sealer for the jars and the break bleeder but they have been out, but I'm on the waiting list. I wanted to know if I can take my dried vegetables and fruits and turn them into a powder for use in soups, etc? Thanks for all of your information.
Yes, you can, I flake up my various greens to add to soups, I prefer not to add as powders, but some do
@@RainCountryHomestead thank you for getting back to me.
HI heidi can i use a old towel that i made out of rags
yes
What did you do before all these new gadgets?
Freezer or leaving in packages but years ago I also did not have the food storage I have now being 2 years ahead or more so it is important that my goods can be stored for long term, not just for next month
Of course before putting up all the dried goods, I was also pressure and water bath canning, NOT quite so new gadgets
Rain Country I love that
On the chocolates, powders, etc. Heidi do just vacuum seal or do you add an oxygen absorbers along with vacuuming??.. for long term .
I never use oxygen absorbers when vacuum sealing, some do but I do not
I don’t know about the real butter powder.
