    FOOD SAVER TIP BREAKING?.....NO MORE
    First I would like to compliment you on the detail that you go into. I am just starting to get into canning, so I am looking at things from a different perspective. It would seem to me that if you constantly insert your food saver tip and remove it that you will introduce a little wear each time you do so. I have what I think is a solution to this problem which will also make breaking these tips a thing of the past.
    Go to an aquarium supply place and get an air bleeder valve. You can get one with a male barb on each end with an exhaust port to let the air out. Or if you cannot find one like that then get one with a single barb and a exhaust port. If the latter then you will also have to get a barbed T connector.
    The idea is to put this bleeder between your brake bleeder pump and the food saver top. Now when finished vacuum sealing all you have to do is release the vacuum in the plastic hose with the turn of a thumb screw. No more food saver tips wearing out or breaking from repetitive inserting and removing from the food saver lid.

    I must say I love the chamber I purchased from you. Thank you for making them. Please, thank Patrick for me also. I found a jar just a bit taller then what would fit, by just a bit. I put the top on the chamber and it sat ontop of the jar lid and I still tighten the lid to the chamber even though it was not sitting all the way down and it still sealed the jar.

    I bought one that is like you second one. I used it for sometime and then it stopped working. I could push the handle, but it was not doing anything. My husband took it apart and there is a rubber gasket type piece in there that got chewed up. My husban bought several at the hardware store and he said it was also not lubercated. I'm sorry if I am not describing this well. It comes down to it needed lubercation and a little rubber gasket. It works just fine now.

    I didn't really want to cut my food saver hose since I do have some larger or odd shaped jars that won't fit in the chamber. I found another hose here that worked as an adapter between the chamber and the food saver hose. Quite snug and worked wonderfully. Told my brother as he also has a chamber and he did the same thing.

    I have a food saver canister, that I use to seal commercial jars. I have found that sometimes the lug lids on the commercial jars need to be heated to soften the rubber to get a seal that lasts. So I just turn on my coffee pot and use the heating element on it to heat the lids. When the element is hot to the touch I just throw the lid on it, heat both sides for a few seconds(tell its hot but not to hot to handle).Then throw the lid on the jar real quick before it cools down, and seal. The seals will last. If you dont have a caffee pot a blow dryer would work, or a worm pan. You could Try that with the rubber on the tattlers it may work who knows.😊

    Hello, Heidi. Many thanks for the tip for using the brake bleeder pump to vacuum seal jars with a food saver jar attachment. Vacuum sealing in jars is an important part of my preparation plans, but I found with the food saver was hit and miss on achieving a seal. It is so much better to have an actual gauge to visualize the creation of the vacuum. I ordered the bleeder you linked, and I haven't had one fail yet. MANY THANKS!

    You’re never gonna believe this. About five years ago my parents gave me some vaccum jar lids. They said “there is one of each size”! OK there is not. There is two widemouth vacuum tops, LOL. I mainly need the regular size top, LOL! Too funny I just never checked until the other day. I was asked like “OK let me get my vacuum sealing thing going on. I have my break bleeder for back up yay”! I got a couple of 1 pound herbs put in half gallon jars. “Oh no”!!!!!!! Lesson learned!!!

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The wide mouth top should fit just fine on those half gallon jars as they are always wide mouth. Or did you say "lesson learned" because you had to pump it for a long time to get it to seal due to the larger jar and airspace from the herbs?

If I hadn't dislocated to the Southeast I'd arrange for you to give mine a test to see if the quality seems the same. Sadly it is now a 5 day drive to get to your neck of the woods. I did do a basic test with it and was able to get a better seal over using the Food Saver battery powered vacuum pump so I think it is going to work well for me.

    Thank you so much for your very informative video. A while back, maybe about 2 months, I had seen a different video from someone else about vacuum ceiling jars. She was so super excited to show us a new item she had just received in the mail. It was the manual pump for the food saver tops. I was quite impressed and decided to look on Amazon to see if I could find one. I didn't have any trouble finding the kit with the manual pump so I put it in the cart with the intention of showing my husband and seeing what he thought about it. Several weeks passed and the product went from in the cart to putting it on hold. Then a few days ago I talked to my husband about it again and asked him if it would be okay to purchase the food saver manual kit. He said okay and ordered it from Amazon. It arrived today. So I thought I would go online and see if there were other videos available to watch that would give detailed instructions and tips on how to use it. I think that's how I found you LOL. I loved your video. And I think we will purchase a brake bleeder pump kit as a backup. Of course when I get something new I have to try it out on all kinds of stuff, so I went around the kitchen vacuum ceiling various jars that were full of anything from herbs, beans, to flour. Well I got a bit of a surprise when I tried the flour LOL. That's when I looked over a few of your other videos and found the one where you give advice on vacuum sealing flour in jars. Thank you so much!!!! Needless to say I had quite the cleanup job after trying to do it without the little paper towel in the top of the jar LOL.

    I daily use Patrick's brilliant vacuum chamber on a variety of jars that my neighbors, who toss their jars, have saved for me. I inherited a number of ancient canning jars with the glass top and metal wire that secures the top. I have purchased rubber bands for them. I am curious if the Vacuum chamber would seal these jars? I am at a loss of how to experiment since I don't think they create a hiss when opened.
    Heidi, THANK YOU for any advise you can offer on this.

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am really not sure on that. I doubt it would work with the bail wire in place but it might if one puts the rubber gasket and glass lid on and tries to seal that way. If the lid is firmly in place when removed from the chamber, then it has work. Then a person could put the bail wire in place.

    🙋🏼‍♀️ Question. Is there a specific reason you don't use your food saver for sealing? I saw your video preserving eggs and you used the break bleeder too to seal the Mason jars. My hubby ordered a good dehydrator (I have one but only goes low, med and high) with square trays and increments of 1 F to adjust. I'm in the process of ordering a break bleeder and that cannister. Not sure what it's exactly called.
    Thank you for your informative video.

      Could be! I measured the long hose in my kit and it's 2 or 3 "marks" above 19-1/2 inches. I had bought the Food Saver Lid Sealer Kit but it didn't work with my Sunglife Vacuum Sealer Machine (I watched a TH-cam video showing it DOES work with my brand of machine---but it didn't!). I tried it every way I could think of, after watching several videos. The regular mouth "cup" was so loose on my mason jars, and the blue rubber ring inside it was so "limp," compared to the rubber ring inside the large "cup" that it wouldn't fit the jars correctly! THANK YOU for your videos on the brake bleeder pump! And THANK YOU for being the type of person that lives by the motto "Find a way, or make one!"

    9/15/21.....This is my 3rd video today of you demonstrating the chamber & brake bleeder, so glad I don't have to use the food saver machine at all....well I can't really because I assume it doesn't do that....just bags....as I don't recall getting any extra attachments , but I could have ! 10 yr is a long time....I rarely even used the machine....too much trouble to drag it out every time I wanted to use it.....lol.....so I think I will be better off with just the brake bleeder & the chamber....thank your smart husband for making one that we can trust....
    But can you tell me the name of your second one you bought , and it is just like the first one, but made better I believe you said it was chintzy.....I sure don't want one like that..... lol.....you said you would put the new one in your description..... can you tell me where these come from, where they are made ? Thank Heidi
    I just noticed this video was taped in Oct, 2020, didn't notice the date of the other two....so this info you posted is old news then.....but if you could still answer my last two questions I'd appreciate it.....I definitely want your husbands chamber that you use, I trust it....so will look forward to your msg....

      The second one I bought was worse than the first. At least my first one (which did come with some attachments but not the jar sealers) was the best one I had because it actually lasted 3 years instead of just 2 years apiece like the other three I bought later on. Since I am getting away from plastic as much as I can anyway and my brake bleeder pump does what I need it to do, I am done with the foodsaver machines and will not be buying anymore

    On your old Food Saver with the broken asessory port - be sure it is not plugged in - take the bottom off (6 screws on mine) - cut the plastic hose that goes to the asessory port - find a nail or something round that will fit inside the hose - put it in the clipped hose sealed with some glue - reassembly the bottom - let the glue dry. Now your Food Saver will work with everything except the assessory port which you bypassed. Thanks for the video on the hand pump.

    Just a little comment about labeling on the lids. Label what you want on the lids. If you use the permanent markers that’s fine use some rubbing alcohol and a clean cotton cloth and just rub it in a circular motion on the lid and the permanent marker will come off and you don’t have to scrub hard and it’s nice and sterilize just a little information.

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  ปีที่แล้ว

      I already answered this comment you made on another video but I will add that in using the brake bleeder you simply pump it up until the needle stops moving and it will vary at where it stops but the chances of it imploding are very unlikely. If you are using a FoodSaver machine, that will just not happen, if you are using an industrial pump of some kind, it will really depend on how strong the pump is

They stay fresh for much, much longer! Even Prep salad fixings to take to work stay fresh for days.I wonder "why" I cannot use the brake bleeder for that too, since I am using the same Foodsaver lid? This seems like a very good idea all around, but I actually worked in the plumbing dept of a very large box store for several years. I learned that there are SO many ways of going about the same thing when it comes to plumbing.
    This could have been built with much less expensive pieces, instead of schedule 40 pressure PVC, DWV thin wall can be used and the advantage there is also a completely flat bottom cap.

      Patrick worked in water treatment and also fixed many main breaks so he is very familiar with all types.
