Dude, I REALLY liked the way you structured this video so that I could really see how everything worked before I go ahead and do the work myself. Like some below, I had a small deer run out in front of my truck causing damage to the grill and bumper and suddenly, the P1D73 code. Due to the thoroughness of of your video, I can now comfortably resolve the issue on my own. Also subscribed because of the way you explain the repairs. Thanks man!
14 ram threw the same code after road debris flew up smashed my grill. Used my scanner that I bought to get the code, googled the code and your video was one of the first to pop up. It all made sense as to what happened to the shutters. Now I can fix after watching your video. Very informative and clear. Thanks bud and good work!
Figured out I had this problem because my Auto-start wouldnt work in my 2014 Jeep Cherokee Latitude. Took it to Autozone and got this code from my engine light. Had a mechanic delete the code and my autostart works now, saw this in another youtube video. Came here to see how important it was so maybe I just have to put the pins back in, awesome, thank you so much!
Great video! Very informative for me since this piece of technology is not something I had ever seen before experiencing the P1D73 code on my 2015 3.7L Ram 1500.
Mike Druhl Evening Mike. It's not a common issue but it happens from time to time. Maybe it's something simple such as the linkage. Thanks for your time and make sure to subscribe
Well, I had a turkey vulture decide he wanted a piece of my grill (the grill won). But this code popped up afterwards so thank you for this video, very helpful!
Very interesting and THOROUGH description of this device. Enjoyed the watch David, and esp get a kick out of your moving hands, like a maestro in an opera, LOL. I was curious as to what this device was as I decide on a truck purchase, and this was more than adequate in its entire function!! Thanks David!
In silence I can’t stop moving my hands lol.....I try but I just can’t. I realize it while filming and becomes a bit of a joke from time to time. Glad I could spread a bit of knowledge of the item to everyone. Thanks for watching and make sure to subscribe!
Awesome Video, Appreciate the in-depth views and explaining before just changing the camera view. Was an extreme help in diagnosing and repairing my truck.
Thank you so much for your tutorial video. So well explained and camera views were awesome. So very much appreciated. My job was so easy to fix with your expertise. Did have a few questions I found on one individual louver(shutter) that the pin that would fit into the frame to move the shutters together is broken off. Can I replace the one w/o removing grill? Is it really necessary to replace at all? Ty
2015 5.7 1500. Looks like I’m missing three or four shudder slats, or doors as you refer, on the driver side so I’ll have to replace and also the center actuator where you snap to the plastic is broken off. Probably when grill was repaired after previous driver Tried pit maneuver on somebody but the AGS was never checked and repair. Drives fine other than code tempted to leave it alone because that part is expensive. Unless you have an extra one that works laying around.
Excellent video. I am having engine cooling problems with my truck but no error codes have tripped. Any chance I am having trouble with the AGS? I have a 203 degree thermostat and the coolant temps will go as high as 220 degrees before is comes back down to 203 degrees. My oil temps are way too high too. They have gone as high as 260 degrees. I use Synthetic oil, and have changed the transmission fluid with Royal Purple transmission fluid.
Just had this error and my shutters were all popped off (minor fender bender). Re attached and crossing my fingers the code doesn’t pop back. Huge thanks for this video, you couldn’t have made it any easier to follow along!
Great video. Just replaced complete unit on 17 1500. Eng light still comes on. Once battery hooked up the shutters opened. Does not cycle open/closed when key is on. Code was U11E9. Any info would be awesome. Thanks Kevin
I have a dodge dart limited 2015. Wife but a cat and cracked assembly. Took whole bumber and shutters off. It needs to be replaced. 1) could I tape shutters closed to get better gpm without worrying about eng damg? 2) if I buy the assembly does it come with the (device that moves shutters)?
Taping it closed will affect the radiator/coolant temps so I dont recommend doing that. Not sure how the part will arrive. I assume it will come as an assembly but you will need to verify that with your local dealer to be 100% sure.
Your thoughts on something and I appreciate your information on the AGS, which I may be in the process of replacing myself. We have a 2015 ram 1500 5.7 hemi that we received after death of owner and we don’t know if transmission fluid has ever been changed. It is eight speed transmission I’m debating whether or not to have someone do a flush or nothing at all Because of the horror stories I’ve heard about putting fresh fluid in there. Your thoughts please and we’re not too far from Augusta.
Excellent video code on scanner came up undefined had to google it to find out what it was. Thanks for video hope my fix is that simple, used motor or assembly is stupid expensive.
My daughter has a 2015 Dodge Dart and check engine light came on with this code. The dealer says it not under warranty because there is a small crack on the grill and says that she must have hit something. However, there's no damage to the bumper or front end indicate that the car has been in an accident, which it hasn't. He quoted me $700 to replace the grill shutter assembly. I picked up the car because they didn't seem trustworthy. Thanks for your video. I'm just a mom and not a mechanic but will try to see if I can snap the shutters back in place. If not, I guess I need to make a claim with my insurance company or should I go to another dealership?
I would first see if there is anything obvious first and if need be.....snap it all back into place. If you dont see anything than no harm in visiting another dealer. They have to prove the damage.....the grille is one thing....actual physical damage to the shutter assembly is another. Thanks for watching and make sure to subscribe
Great explanation, i do have a question tho.. u said they’re there for fuel economy...so that means if we take them off it won’t increase in power getting a better air flow inside ?
I’ve always enjoyed your through and very informative videos. Can you please tell me what class of engine (non-dodge) my truck has. A 2017 GMC Sierra Denali ultimate with the 6.2 engine and 8 speed automatic. I think this truck also has grill shutters. I still have my 97 dodge dually with the Cummings and a 2017 Nissan Titan XD PLATINUM RESERVE with the Cummings. For now I really would like to know about this 6.2 because it hauls ass and manages 21 on the highway. I don’t understand. My Nissan with the 5.0 Cummings only gets 15 no matter how I drive and my older dodge gets 13-17 and it has 384,322 miles
Is there an easy way to delete it, or maybe I should just purchase the whole unit ... I hit 2 deer at once and the small body shop left just one shutter upper passenger side...it was fine for a week then threw the code. It runs cooler around 197 degrees instead of 210 to 215 and a bit less mileage. The small body shop saved me some money getting used parts same color.as I didn't have insurance to cover the damage.
Thanks for video very clear and informative, my 2015 Ram started triggering this code e11p9 code right after it was in for repair of u61 safety recall which calls for possible reprogram of the PCM. Also repaired were u74 tailgate latch , fuel tank mounting strap and U07 Autopark functionality. After I clear the code the truck will drive without triggering the code until the remote starter is engaged. The remote starter starts the truck but it only runs about 20 seconds and shuts down due to the code I guess. Do you thinks it's a coincidence that this happened after the service or is there a possible reason tied to these repairs. Thanks in advance for your help.
Still getting a check engine light and it won't go off. The code is p1d73. When I took the motor apart to move the arm clockwise,I had to strock the arm a little to pull the arm off. And when I did that I didn't feel the gears rotating , its like something was sliping inside. Is there a way to home that motor and arm so I can start from scratch ? Thank for your help.
I have a 14 ram 1500 5.7 and electric fan seemed to be running more so I red codes and it shows U11E9 and looked up and says active grille shutters. Have u ever seen this? And what it could be
Dave, I have a Code U11E9 on my 2019 RAM Big Horn, and after taking it to the dealer [warranty had just finished] I have to do the work myself as the dealer quoted me close to $1,800.00 to fix this code. I'm not an electrician, so I am lost on electrical connections. How close is my code to yours in the video? I remember washing my truck and rinsing the front of it with way too much water the day before the code popped up. Is there a fuse for this system? If so, which one? If you have time to respond. Thank you in advance.
I found that Gettle Ram could not fix mine. I removed the cardboard top cowling and found that the motor cover had split apart, reason unknown. Squeezed the cover back together and the system worked just fine. The dealer kept saying the motor was bad. The problem was fixed in under 15 minutes. Dealer wanted $800.00 to put a new shutter in because they only went by the code and never even checked the physical condition of the shutter. Easy fix. The motor cove had just came apart and it snapped right back together. There is a seam right in the center of the cover.
Question: I bought a 2014 RAM Ecodiesel that just had the engine replaced in August 2017 (I bought it a month later). Well, after seeing this video I got to looking and I think the bottom 2 quadrants have had their shutters removed. It all looks put together correctly. It just looks like they either were never there or were removed. Any thoughts?
I own a 2016 and a 2017 Ram. Both have shutters. I noticed today that one truck's shutters are closed while parked and one is open. Is this normal? Is there no "parked" position for the shutters? One truck was driven far and shutdown (open shutters) while the other was parked and allowed to cool then moved 10ft and shutdown (never allowed to reach temp-shutters closed). TIA
Personally I believe that they are in the position they were last when the trucks were shut off and that explains why one is and the other isnt. I dont think there is no issue, if there was you would have a check engine light on as well. Thanks for watching and for the question. Also thanks for having subscribed.
Thanks for the videos. Question how does the pcm know there's a preformance problem with the active grille shutter. I've already replace ags with a new unit from the dealer, But i keep getting codes for ags preformance . Driver side mirror was replace with one without a ambient temperature sensor. Kept getting code for ambient temperature sensor circuit until I re wired ambient temperature sensor on to aftermarket mirror. Only I couldn't get to read out side the cab. It's now mounted on inside of door instead of outside.do you think that might have something to do with the ags not working properly?
Absolutely a great video sir. Good audio and good camera angles to show the average Joe how the shutter system works and how to fix easily. I was wondering if any silicone lubricant would be used to keep all of them moving smoothly? Or would that just be a big dirt catcher and cause problems? Thanks for putting this on TH-cam.
Is it normal operating temperature for coolant on a 2015 ram 1500 5.7 hemi to reach 217 that’s when I would do wide open throttle. When driving normal I get between 204-213
Another great video. You're the man! Would love to get my 2014 2500 to you for an accurate alignment. I Just tend to get a bit wondering in the front end and the steering wheel just does not center well. On a few occasions, the outer lock nut on the drag link has come loose and I re-tightened it. Had to put a little blue locktite. Where are you located?
I can vouch for these shutters saving fuel. My MPG (according to the dash readout) dropped by 3 points after my '14 1500 threw this same code on a road trip in S.C. Turned out this nasty looking bug got caught in the shutters and was preventing them from closing. This bug was so big it should of had its 4-ways on. But once I scraped that critter out of there I was back to normal and we all lived happily ever after... well, except for the bug. I just wish FCA would have designed the shutters to close on really cold days to help the engine warm up faster. But otherwise I'm really happy with this truck.
Thanks for that input Richard. I dont get to drive these trucks enough to pick up on items like that. Yeah I am not surprised about the size of that bug being that its South Carolina. Here in Georgia its the law that they have their 4 ways on before smacking into you haha.
I have a 2017 Dodge with 8000 miles in the shop that was wrecked and it’s throwing this same code. I test the harness and has no ground! Is it suppose to have ground all the time?? We have tried a active test etc nothing. Do not see any additional damage to the harness anywhere! Is there anything or any direction you could point me thanks
The black wire on the 4 wire connector at the active grill shutter actuator/motor is the ground circuit. That wire runs to a ground eyelet on the left side of the truck on the fender support just below the hood opening inch from the fuse box. Make sure thats bolted in place and also follow the wiring to make sure no obvious wiring damage.
I have a 2015 ram that generated this code , I replaced the AGS but the check engine light still comes on with the same code, this is even after i erased the code. Could the new part be defective or am I missing something?
+Bill Rimmer The check engine light being on could be an issue. We don't have testing where I am located but from what I hear....the check engine light is an item checked so it's very possible that it could cause you to fail. Then again I don't have personal experience of the inspection process. Thanks for asking Bill
I followed this video and it was the shutters identical to what you had but I cleared the code and it came back again not sure what was wrong. I didn't have the issue previously it only came once I installed a new engine on my truck. I hope someone can help find a way to fix it, the CEL is a pain to look at. Thank you.
hi.mr i buy jeep cherokee 2018 2.4 before one month when i start the engine the fan is start too and i find out the active grille shutter is not found ,and the harness connector for it not found also . how i know the source for AGS is it with the fog lamp harness or not ?
Hi there. i am just curious how the pcm know the shudder is not working right? does it monitor radiator inlet and outlet. or are their potentiometer attached to each flap ( which i doubt)?? thanks and keep up the good work.
2007 ram 4x4. Have an evap leak. Keep getting gascap light warning everytime I start the truck. Where are the MOST common errors you see located? I think it is maybe a line that goes up to the engine area that is hard to get to and has several lines with it. thanks
There is no one common spot on these. I would give it a good inspection and look at all the rubber hoses to see if any thing obvious. Otherwise you may need to have it checked using an evap leak tester to see if the issue is the gas cap, fuel tank, purge solenoid, or ESIM. Some things can be check visually, others cant.
you are great! I have heard that the AGS can cause the engine to run too warm on the Pentastar V6. Is that possible? If so and you just removed the shutters would it cause a problem?
Thanks Mike. I havent seen any issues. They do open based on temp so unless there is an issue....it should work fine. If you remove the assembly it will set a code/check engine light for sure
Ok ive been getting this code and couldn't figure it out. The didge was in a front end collision and body shop installed a older model wire harness. From 2018 and newer the wire harness on the bumpers changed. Fliped some wires and bingo code gone shudder works .No open circuit codes just that pesky performance code.
I believe I clipped my ags back into place and they appear to be opening and closing for my 2016 Cherokee but I’m still getting a check engine light. Do I need to reset the code or will it go off in time.
Vandal Actual The code shows to only be caused by the AGS system.....nothing else. I would focus on the shutter assembly. Thanks for the question and make sure to subscribe
I picked them up at harbor freight. I assume your speaking of the metal door panel removal. Here is the link: www.harborfreight.com/5-piece-upholstery-and-trim-tool-set-99739.html
+MotorCity Mechanic yeah. I'll have to check them out. Just changing a headlight bulb on the Ram is a pain but that shape would help with pulling the pins
Since it popped out once, what is to stop it from doing it again while actually driving with the wind hitting it? Will Chrysler not let you replace this assm. as a failed part?
+Kurt Kennedy The decision to replace it falls on me in the end. I treat a warranty repair the same way I treat a customer pay job......I don't replace something unless it's needed. With that in mind I would snap the shutters back into place and make sure they feel secure and then explain what I found to the customer and let then know that if it happens again....then I will replace it. From what I have seen with the ones I repaired......the issue never happened again. So depending on who was paying.....I either saved Chrysler money or the customer money. Both chrysler and customer trust that I am doing an honest repair and that's what I give them. Thanks for the question
+MotorCity Mechanic being from a different manufacture than you, I've head horror stories about warranty times and Chrysler being very picky on what's actually considered warranty...again, no first hand Experience, just curious. Sounds like your warranty is vey similar to ours.
+Kurt Kennedy the warranty times seems capable of being met. I really don't complain about it because a good chrysler tech can usually meet the times or beat them in most cases. It seems to me that over the years the ones who complain in our shop are a bit slow and not welling to learn. If you believe there is an issue with warranty times you can request a case study and they will review it and make changes as needed. Chrysler doesn't have eyes on the vehicle and they rely on us to use our judgement as far as what should and should not be covered. It's not like they have a factory representative there looking out just for the companies best interests. I haven't come across a repair that we have done that they denied and wouldn't cover after the fact. There are some repairs such as transmissions, diesels, and engines that we must fill out paperwork before hand and take pictures before getting final approval but that mainly the expensive repairs.
+MotorCity Mechanic in always take what I hear from other techs with a gain of salt, being I know both sides of the industry pretty well. It sounds like they operate like everyone else then, which is pretty cool to hear. Good videos man!
Thanks Kurt. I always imagined that those in the industry moved from job to job and brand to brand so alot of the operational items seem to always have some common/familiar touches because of that.
There are some companies that sell kits to bypass it and trick the computer to think its there, otherwise replacement is the only fix that I know unless some of the linkage came loose and you might be able to reconnect everything. Thanks for asking and for watching. Make sure to subscribe.
Evening Juan......I have the factory scanners and program and thats what I used to command the shutters. I dont get to use many aftermarket scanners so I cant say for sure exactly which might work best without spending alot. Thanks for watching and make sure to subscribe
I use the Chrysler factory scanner. Its all I have and being a Chrysler dealership tech....I have no other reason for anything else. Not sure what access other scanners have but most likely you will need a higher end scanner.

Awesome! Thanks for taking it out to show how it actually works. This video was so helpful.
You're a beast dude. Thank you for going out of your way to make the repair!

Crazy how this video is 7 years old yet it just happened to my 2023 1500 classic 🤦♂️
Great video. Just replaced complete unit on 17 1500. Eng light still comes on. Once battery hooked up the shutters opened. Does not cycle open/closed when key is on. Code was U11E9. Any info would be awesome. Thanks

I dont think there is no issue, if there was you would have a check engine light on as well. Thanks for watching and for the question. Also thanks for having subscribed.
Hi! Thank`s for a video. What you recomend to do, I have check P1D73 on Jeep Cherokee kl 2015, but I have NO active grill shooter in general.
Great job!
Thanks for the very informative video. It helped alot. And thanks for responding.
Your welcome and thanks for checking the channel out
What’s your take on adding hood venting to remove excessive heat under hood. I do a lot of mountain driving.
Thank you David
Did you show how to reset light if able to fix with out taking to dealership?
Thanks for the videos. Question how does the pcm know there's a preformance problem with the active grille shutter. I've already replace ags with a new unit from the dealer, But i keep getting codes for ags preformance . Driver side mirror was replace with one without a ambient temperature sensor. Kept getting code for ambient temperature sensor circuit until I re wired ambient temperature sensor on to aftermarket mirror. Only I couldn't get to read out side the cab. It's now mounted on inside of door instead of outside.do you think that might have something to do with the ags not working properly?
First thing I would do is get that sensor mounted back outside so that its reading correctly. It might have an affect.
Down in Georgia. Just outside of Augusta.
awesome vid. for my SA, how much woukd replacement parts be
Looks like its around $400-$500 in parts. Thanks for the question and make sure to subscribe Edward!
Very well made video
Much appreciated! Thanks for watching and dont forget to subscribe
Is it necessarily bad to have it turned off? can you have heating problems?
So is it safe to still drive? If the vehicle isn't overheating?
I have a 2015 ram that generated this code , I replaced the AGS but the check engine light still comes on with the same code, this is even after i erased the code. Could the new part be defective or am I missing something?
Excellent video!! Would that code stop a car from passing smog check?
+Bill Rimmer The check engine light being on could be an issue. We don't have testing where I am located but from what I hear....the check engine light is an item checked so it's very possible that it could cause you to fail. Then again I don't have personal experience of the inspection process. Thanks for asking Bill
Excellent video
I followed this video and it was the shutters identical to what you had but I cleared the code and it came back again not sure what was wrong. I didn't have the issue previously it only came once I installed a new engine on my truck. I hope someone can help find a way to fix it, the CEL is a pain to look at. Thank you.
Thank you man
Your welcome!
hi.mr i buy jeep cherokee 2018 2.4 before one month when i start the engine the fan is start too and i find out the active grille shutter is not found ,and the harness connector for it not found also . how i know the source for AGS is it with the fog lamp harness or not ?
Thank you for this video 👍🏼
Hi there. i am just curious how the pcm know the shudder is not working right? does it monitor radiator inlet and outlet. or are their potentiometer attached to each flap ( which i doubt)?? thanks and keep up the good work.
It runs a test where it makes the shutters go full open and full closed. If the motor moves more then normal then it sets a code. Thanks for watching
oh okay i see thanks
Hey i have question, its off topic but do you know about the throttlebody re learn procedure for the 1500 rams with the 5.7 hemis
Without a big tester can you test the motor on the active Grille shutters
2007 ram 4x4. Have an evap leak. Keep getting gascap light warning everytime I start the truck. Where are the MOST common errors you see located? I think it is maybe a line that goes up to the engine area that is hard to get to and has several lines with it. thanks
it is just behind the engine about a foot or three back.
Great video! I'm glad I found your channel! Also would you recommend an Ecodiesel?
Cool. Thanks for finding the channel. The ecodiesel has been holding up well. I haven't seen many issues so far. Make sure to subscribe
Mine never open dunno what to do even when turn on the AC always grille shut. Can you tell me how to solve it
you are great!
Thank you David for your quick reply I am totally impressed with your information and your expertise using these videos thank you
I dont feel worthy of that praise but I will take it haha. Thanks Mike
I appreciate your videos.
I am glad that the videos help and that people such as yourself watch them. I greatly appreciate it.
I'm drafting an email with a question for you. I'll send that to you soon, thank you again!
So the ags is commanded by speed ( speed sensor ) ?
Great video 💪🏼
Thanks!
Awesome video, thanks man.
Thank you!!
Great go I need this
Ok ive been getting this code and couldn't figure it out. The didge was in a front end collision and body shop installed a older model wire harness. From 2018 and newer the wire harness on the bumpers changed. Fliped some wires and bingo code gone shudder works .No open circuit codes just that pesky performance code.
Great video !!
I believe I clipped my ags back into place and they appear to be opening and closing for my 2016 Cherokee but I’m still getting a check engine light. Do I need to reset the code or will it go off in time.
Oh great video by the way and thanks for being thorough and taking your time.
Great video!! Thank!
Your welcome Matt!
At what speed does these shutters close and are they always open at slow speeds?
Great video david
Much appreciate for the feedback
I’m stumped my shutters open and close after clearing an obstruction but even tho I erase codes the code p1 still shows up in permanent codes
Great, informative video.
Would this code show for any other reason than just the AGS? Got a shop here saying it could be a powertrain issue as well. Got a 2016.
Vandal Actual The code shows to only be caused by the AGS system.....nothing else. I would focus on the shutter assembly. Thanks for the question and make sure to subscribe
Hey man. What brand trim tool is that? Haven't ever seen one like that. Seems to work awesome.
I picked them up at harbor freight. I assume your speaking of the metal door panel removal. Here is the link: www.harborfreight.com/5-piece-upholstery-and-trim-tool-set-99739.html
+MotorCity Mechanic yeah. I'll have to check them out. Just changing a headlight bulb on the Ram is a pain but that shape would help with pulling the pins
Good video. Thank you.
Thankfully
tnks for info!!! good job!!!
Question how do your active the shutters to open and close
You have to use a scanner that has the ability. Thanks for asking and make sure to subscribe
Dose a Chrysler Pacifica have the same system ?
Is this the ONLY way to fix this? 2014 with the code, I have to replace the whole thing?
There are some companies that sell kits to bypass it and trick the computer to think its there, otherwise replacement is the only fix that I know unless some of the linkage came loose and you might be able to reconnect everything. Thanks for asking and for watching. Make sure to subscribe.
Nice let me try it now hope it’s something easy
Thanks for watching and make sure to subscribe
Question, what kind of tool/scanner did you use to test the shutter?
Evening Juan......I have the factory scanners and program and thats what I used to command the shutters. I dont get to use many aftermarket scanners so I cant say for sure exactly which might work best without spending alot. Thanks for watching and make sure to subscribe
What type of scanner u have to activate the shutters
I use the Chrysler factory scanner. Its all I have and being a Chrysler dealership tech....I have no other reason for anything else. Not sure what access other scanners have but most likely you will need a higher end scanner.
Good morning ASG if I do start car then always open
