I had the pleasure of meeting Geoffrey Hughes at the Tesco store in Kettering round about this time. I was in the store repairing the staff restaurant coffee machine and had to go to my car to get a part, as I opened the door from the staff area into the main store I walked out but was looking down for some reason and walked into Geoffrey pushing his shopping trolley, I said, oh, it's Eddie Yates!! He just grinned at me and said, yep, that's me fella, smiled at me and we shook hands. I remember he was taller than he looks on tv. Lovely guy and rest in peace , a great talent.
That’s a great story. Yep, lovely guy. Eddie, Stan and Hilda were a terrific trio, I’ve got the ‘70s and ‘80s box sets with so many classic episodes featuring their storylines, fantastic. Wish the show was that good now, I can’t be doing with it anymore. Then of course, Onslow.
I remember him as Eddie with Stan and Hilda when I was kid. Not watched Constipation Street in years, infact any of the soaps, they all make you want to slit your wrists !! Yeah, loved him as Onslow and Twiggy in the Royle Family, great characters. Thanks for your kind reply, always appreciated. Daz, Leicester.
Coronation street was never again the same without Geoffrey Hughes. he was a marvellous actor who could act in any tv drama with desire and passion . RIP to Geoffrey .
Here we are 23 year's later to the day? Happy Birthday Sue🎉🎈 What a well loved chap Geoffrey was & Is? As are many of the guests that are not with us anymore but still not forgotten 🙏💋✌️ He made a caricature that was that lovely man, and was asked to do that again many time's.. He gave a lot of fun to many and is still missed🙏 Bless his SOUL 😘💪😇🙏
For me his "Mrs. O" to Hilda Ogden (Jean Alexander) was him perfectly: In Heartbeat..... His always failing missions to wealth...... Cheers mate. Miss you so much.
Great bloke loved him in all his performances over the years. Viewing this 23 years later those of us who were around then didn't realise what a horrible crazy place the world would become today. RIP Geoff.
I absolutely "Love" Geoffery Hughes playing "Vernon Skripps" on Heartbeat and watch it most nights. For me, that was his best part in tv comedy. Sadly missed r.i.p Mr Hughes.
Onslow was so familiar to Finnish men 😂😂😂. Please, don't be angry with me, dear friends, neighbours and relatives. I don't say that you are like Onslow 😂, because Onslow have big heart, he is always helping everybody. Oh, don't be angry to me, dear friends and so on 😂😂😅😅😁😁😆😆.
if only this was your life was still here in 2024 what an iconic show i used to love watching this show and all the stars back in the 80's 90's they should do a remake with alan carr lol
Possibly the one of the most Deserving of "This is your life" Accolade. I bumped into Geoff at a Petrol station on Wellington road Eccles in the mid eighties not far from the Coronation street set it was about half twelve at night I was filling up after a late shift on the local taxi cabs. He was on the pump opposite me and said "Alright lad" So I said "Yes thanks are you" I thought "I know this guy" but couldn't for the life of me remember where from! He had this warm glow around him and was down to earth and obviously proving he would speak to anyone. I wish I had realised who he was and spoke to him further. I have watched every single episode of everything he has acted in and revelled in his Fantastic talent. R.I. P Geoff.
Geoffrey was so much more than the wonderful Eddie Yates the bin man, and the Onslow as part of the 'Bucket' family, he truly was a remarkable gentleman. Many moons ago, I just happened to be doing a small job at the Sunderland theatre, when Geoffrey came by me back stage wearing one of his large Teddy like woolly sweaters. This is the first time I've ever seen or caught Geoffrey on "This Is Your Life"... thank you very much for 'posting' this. I've been working as an extra, supporting artiste for a couple of years now, and one can certainly have some great fun, both on and off stage, it is a wonderful place to work. I've achieved some remarkable feats and challenges, I've met some unbelievable individuals from all walks of life, and I'm so pleased Geoffrey was one of those. Laughter and fun are the best things in the world, and I'm very sure Geoffrey has made us ALL laugh, he was a Great gentleman. My very best wishes to Sue, Geoffrey's family, and his masses of friends... 'if' any of you just happen to be looking in on this. Thank you for being 'you' Geoffrey.
I have loved Geoffrey's performances for many years and to discover he was a musician and sailor, well that is just perfect. I shall take a drink to you in Cowes this year Mr Hughes. RIP x
Some of yhose old Coronation Street moments with Stan, Hilda and Eddie were bcomedy gold, but there were also some beautiful human moments too. Wonderful.
The look on his face when he realised the show was going to be about him, was priceless. The look on his face when he walked into the set of the programme, a very humble and gracious gentleman. Not many around like Goeff anymore, that's for sure. Vale Geoff, a true gentleman in every sense.
I most remember him in Corrie always wearing that black PVC shouldered donkey jacket, smoking cigarettes and supping pints with Hilda Ogden's fella, also in a black PVC shouldered donkey jacket. R.I.P. xxxxx
Wasn't a fan and still not a fan of his character in Heartbeat but let's be serious nobody could replace Greengrass but i loved him when i was a child growing up in the 70's as Eddie Yates, him and Stan Ogden together were brilliant. Those were my best memories of him.
Best known for “Heartbeat” and “Keeping up ........” here in Denmark. Keeping up is still on the telly, but unfortunately Heartbeat is pausing at the moment. Sadly missed 😢 RIP 🥀
Geoffrey was the most original actor, the way he delivered the lines and made you laugh eventho it wasnt that funny... I could go on for hours about the laughs i had watching Sir Hughes. Greatly missed in 2024 and beyond & Rest In Peace Sir Hughes.
The Heartbeat did make it good times for UK actors...sad that they don't make series like that any more ... Hughes was lovely charming actor, sad that he is gone.
I’m disappointed that it didn’t discuss the origins of the FH baseball cap that Geoffrey Hughes wears as Onslow in Keeping Up Appearances. FH is Fulton Hogan, a New Zealand construction company founded in Dunedin NZ. Geoffrey was an invited international celebrity to Dunedin’s festival week in the late 80’s and the Fulton Hogan cap was gifted to him.

I have the very good fortune to know one of Geoff Hughes cousin, he too is a lovely man.
0:25 0:26 😮
Coronation Street's halcyon days. Geoff was superb in that series.
What I got out of this, is that Geoff had "time" for everyone, and in my opinion, anybody who has "time" for everyone is a very special person.
