    I love Charvels, had several pro mods and Model series, and they've all been amazing. The Mexican and 80's Model are very different, but still love them. I think this guitar looks great. I think I'd stop noticing the back relicing quite quickly

    Recently got mine. I’m very particular about nice tall frets and great necks. This guitar definitely has that. Pickup’s sound fantastic. It stays well in tune.

      Totally agree. It has probably one of my favorite necks ever…it’s all preference, but for me anyway.

    I ended up doing a refret and installing jumbo stainless steel frets, love the glassy feel! I already had the materials here and new it was just a matter of time.
    I also took your suggestion and fixed the saddle radius, big difference, thanks.

      That is awesome! The stainless fret with this neck make it an unbeatable combo imo. It just feels SO GOOD!

    Great video man and super helpful. These Charvels are great workhorse guitars. I love the feel generally and the graphite reinforced neck provides outstanding stability. I’ve had a couple of these over the years.
    I’m not an Evergrey fan but I was looking at picking one of these up as I enjoy having 1 obligatory Floyd/metal guitar.
    I’m more of a Gibson player 98% of the time.
    I really like this one in pics/theory but some of the issues here that you point out are unacceptable at this price so even if I do pick one of these up it might just get returned if I get one that’s not good at this asking price.
    IMO the relic job should have been a little less overdone at least. When Fender first started the Road Worn series, the relic work was very well done for the price. At some point it just got out of hand, rushed, and sloppy.
    I actually like relic guitars just because they’re great to bang around. There’s a time and place for perfection too when it comes to finishes but these are cool because you don’t have to care. And you’re right, I have Gibson guitars that I’ve played heavily for 20 years that have an overall patina aging to them but not the paint wear and so on. Even the Murphy lab stuff and a lot of Fender CS aging is just too much but that’s just my take on it.
    If that’s what somebody likes and it makes them feel inspired then so be it.
    However, I’m a little shocked at some of the shoddy finish touches especially since that’s essentially what you’re paying for. Otherwise it’s a straight mid quality Charvel.
    Like you say here, “good bones”.
    You’ve got a great attitude towards it though and it’s going to be a much better instrument when you finish which at this point, you probably have.
    It would be great to see your follow up video.

      I agree fully with everything you said. And on a side note, I have always wanted to get a Les Paul, but the necks have been too chunky for me…at least the ones I have tried. I wish they made a thinner neck. Not Wizard thin, but something in between.

    There are a few important things to note about this guitar model (I got mine a year ago, brand new), as it originates from a Mexican factory. The overall craftsmanship and attention to detail is quite disappointing, especially considering the price range. The finishing quality is comparable to that of $400 guitars, yet this particular model is sold for $1700, and it didn't even come with a soft case initially. I am glad they include the soft case now. Additionally, the string action on this guitar is set quite high and cannot be easily adjusted due to design flaws or the lack thereof. The neck angle is not aligned perfectly with the body, leaving some space that requires shimming in order to fit properly. Moreover, since this model doesn't feature the original FR (Floyd Rose) bridge, there are issues with saddle height on the G and D strings, necessitating additional adjustments (shims under to level them or similar). The frets also have sharp edges that need to be fully polished. Despite these shortcomings, with some adjustments, the playability can be improved to a certain extent. However, it's important to note that the string action will never sit perfectly low without causing buzzing or compromising sustain. I have been able to achieve better results with any Fender American Standard (USA made) or an Ibanez RG or S Prestige (Japan made). Unfortunately, even after taking this Charvel guitar to one of the best luthiers in my area, it still falls short. Considering the price they are asking for this model, which is primarily based on its appearance, I don't believe it's worth the investment. You can find a similar guitar, such as the regular So Cal 1 model, for a much more reasonable price. But buy the one that is made in USA as these typically come with a proper setup before leaving the factory. It's disheartening to see that Charvel allows their Mexican factory to produce and ship more expensive guitars in such subpar condition.

      Very well said. And I agree with ya. That’s why I set out to do all of the mods I have done to this guitar. Not that anyone should need to at this price point.

    I’m still sad I traded mine in. I actually tried to get it back but someone snagged it quick.
    I had the d-tuna installed at d standard to drop to c and loved it. Loved the way it felt but the only things were stiff fine tuners and bar but other than that, I loved it. I think I just fought myself again aesthetically but I may need to get another. Install the d-tuna again with a brass block and coated springs.
    Also wondering if he’s going to release another model with the Jackson headstock and shark inlays.

      Is there a chance you will get one again? I saw a pic of he playing that that one recently. It may be an up and coming one. They say that this one is “limited” but I haven’t heard anything about them discontinuing it. It seems to sell out fast when they do a batch.

      You could also try the EVH Frenkie. It is very similar if you like the finish, and i think it comes with the d-tuna. And 200 cheaper if i remember correctly.

    Question
    I see you ditched a spring as well. Mine was are up by Sweetwater and it's in tune but my Floyd came like your angled back. When I pull the spring out will I only be adjusting the claw screws and basic tuning? Or will I have to adjust the truss? (Based on your experience) I'm trying to gauge what I'm in for as far as learning Floyd work. Its been year's since I had a Floyd
    Thank you in advance.

    • @brutesmagootes3996
      @brutesmagootes3996  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My truss rod wasn’t too bad. What you will want to do is first wedge something between the bridge and the body that sets the bridge level with the body (you can use the bar to lift the back of the bridge up to make it easier). Next tune your strings and lock them down, then remove your wedge from under the bridge. Then on the back of the guitar back the screws out a couple of turns each and remove the center spring. Then check the tuning of your guitar. Based on that, loosen or tighten the screws until it’s in tune (I had to back mine out a bit but I run lower tuning). If one side is in tune but the other isn’t, just adjust the screw on the side that out. That should be it. 👍🏻

      @@brutesmagootes3996 dude, thanks for the advice. Thats pretty much what I'd planned. BTw, what's a good good Evergrey starting point? What's the best guitar album of theirs?

      That’s hard as I really like a lot of their stuff. As far as albums I’d say get their latest live one Before The Aftermath as it has a good mix of songs across their albums. Favorite individual songs would be My Allied Ocean and Save Us

    I thought the bridge was supposed to be flat against the body on that model? Like how EVH set his guitars up? Is that how it came? Is that what you meant? That way you can easily put in a d tunna

    • @brutesmagootes3996

      This is how it came from the factory, it’s a top-mount bridge. Not recessed.

    Eeesh, seeing that questionable relic-work close up... 😕 So much of it makes no sense at all. It'd be cheaper to buy an unrelic'd model and have fun adding more convincing dings and scratches yourself. Thanks Brutes for a very good video with lots of helpful close-ups.

    • @brutesmagootes3996
      @brutesmagootes3996  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, you're right. If it was done by the Fender custom shop or something, then there would be better results. But this is MIM and the person/persons likely do not have the knowledge or are allowed the time to do a proper job on it.

    After reading additional comments on this guitar and leaving a lengthy one myself, I wonder if the quality and asking price of these are reasons why there are still so many available and now include a case?
    Interesting and a fail for such a cool guitar release.
    Fender/Charvel, you know better. 👎🏻

    • @brutesmagootes3996
      @brutesmagootes3996  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it is partly that, and partly because they saw a huge remade for them as they were selling out fast, so the flooded the market with more, and shot themselves in the foot. Regardless, across the board quality is down and prices are up, and that really sucks.

    I really wanted to love the guitar but dont love the flush mount Floyd Rose. I kept it for 2 weeks but in the end returned it due to the flush mount trem. Exchanged it for a Charvel Pro-Mod 24 fret with recessed Gotah Tremolo and it was far better for me. Too bad because I really wanted this guitar. I like Charvels and now have 2 in my collection.

      @@brutesmagootes3996You got a particuarly good one, it has the proper growth ring orientation ( looks to be a center seamed 'open book' matched body) which contributes to the resonant size of the sound.
      Top mount floyds ALWAYS sound better than recessed (more wood at the posts equal more resonance and clarity)
      Also, non locking tuners are better with double locking Floyds because you can wrap lots of string around the posts allowing you to unwind the string a turn or two so when you break a string (on floyds its always at the bridge saddle) you can keep using the strings. A locking tuner is counter intuative to this imo.
      Again, thats a nice looking/ sounding guitar and the up grades you mention (OFR made in Germany) and the neck pickup ( I'm not a fan of that stock Dimarzio area 67) will make it even BETTER sounding 👍
