Lost In Space: The Launch of The Jupiter 2 !

  • Part 1. A re-imagining of the first automated test flight of the Jupiter 2 from the original 1965 TV show "Lost in Space."
Set in the year 2097 at the Alpha Control Shipyards on Jupiter's moon, Callisto. The ship's systems are tested during a shakedown flight before the spacecraft is sent to Earth to pick up the Robinson Family a week later. The Jupiter 2 is the first in a series of ships designed to take families from Earth to the new colony planet in orbit around Alpha Centauri.
This video shows the launch, attainment of escape velocity from Callisto, the deployment of the ship's sensors and engagement of the navigational systems. Part 2 will take a look at the ship's passenger compartment and feature the most famous crew member, Robot B9.
All models, animation, original texture mapping & editing by me. Sound FX are modified from the show. Royalty-free music from AudioMicro, since FOX hates any use of their own music, even if it's fair use.... All models created entirely with 3ds MAX. Compiled with AfterEffects & Audacity. EDIT: TH-cam CLAIMS THE MUSIC IS "TEXTURE" BY HEXAGRAM. THAT IS NOT TRUE. The tracks are named "Taklamakan" and "Arctic Voices." IT IS ROYALTY-FREE MUSIC from AUDIO-MICRO.
Recognition must be given to Art Creber and Robert Kinoshita, the original designers of the Jupiter 2 and the Robot, and many of the props in the show. A sincere thank you for giving us a means by which our imaginations can run free.

I’ve always loved the series, even though my mother wouldn’t let me stay up to watch it. I had to wait until it was in syndication in the 70’s, and I was a bit older. It was always my guilty pleasure that I kept to myself since everyone I knew loved Star Trek. I always wanted to be Will Robinson and have all his adventures. Many years later when I was in my early 20’s, I was working at a high end restaurant in the mid west. My employer told me one day his brother in law was coming into town, and would be coming in for dinner that night. I asked what he was in town for, and was told “some kind of convention or something”. “He was an actor when he was a child, you might have heard of him. He was on “Lost in Space”. I thought I was going to pass out. I asked “do you mean Billy Mumy?”, “yes, but he goes by Bill now”. I couldn’t believe it. After years of wanting to be this character, I was going to meet him. I not only met him, but got to know him somewhat. He was always charming, polite, and from then on, whenever he was in town, would ask for me when visiting the restaurant. It was a thrill to know him for the few years I was working for his brother in law. He was always very thoughtful, and kind to me. It’s one of the funnier things that happened in my life, and I’ll always pinch myself over it.

I agree. The movie was abysmal. They could have used the real Jupiter 2 and made it more realistic. By “realistic” in referring to the original series type ship. Not realistic in today’s style of movie rocket ships which are in my opinion ugly and too way out.

Hi Everyone! I'm frankly astonished that this little video now has more than a half-million views. I created it 10 years ago on a Lenovo laptop, using 3ds MAX as the modeling program, Photoshop to create all the texture maps, Audacity to edit the royalty-free music, and AfterEffects to assemble the animation clips into the final movie. Sincere thanks to everyone who has commented! There really is more to come. I have completed a vastly more detailed 3d model of the entire ship, including the entire lower deck, right down to every button and light. Many still images of this model can be seen at the Lost in Space forum on Proboards.com, and also at Scifi-Meshes.com (where a complete history of the model-making progress is documented in the thread "A New Jupiter 2 that makes sense").

Awesome ... grew up with this in 1966 sitting by a floor heater watching with family on a Black and White RCA tv on legs. That was a real America livng life stress free and great TV and movies like Fantastic Voyage. Zachary Smith was just as diabolical as Donald Pleasance saboteur in that flick.

@@Haselius00 , I will. You've done an enormous job with the whole thing. And yes, I will keep an eye open for more. Oh yeah, it always urked me when throughout the series they would always mention "Jupiter 2" without a frame of reference. So when you put the ship on one of the moons of Jupiter, you cleared it up. Even if it wasn't in the original script, that doesn't matter, what mattered was that there was a frame of reference which all of us fans could relate to.

The sound of the Jupiter engine was is most distinguished. This sound was used also for the Bat Mobile kind of and for 1968 Planet Of The Apes space craft before landing in the forbidden zone lake.. Great stuff.Smashing! 👍

As a longtime CATIA modeler and Blender noob, I look at this and just can't believe my eyes. This is a masterpiece! You got everything just right. I grew up watching this show and you captured the entire look and feel. I felt like I was watching the show again but with "blow your mind" SFX. I can"t thank you enough.

I'm just elated that there is such a following of the original Lost In Space. I remember just before it aired for the first time, the preview of the jupiter 2's first planetfall. Absolutely no theme of Lost in space, but a very short music score from the twilight zone. Those were indeed the days.

This is absolutely AMAZING! what you have done with the Jupiter 2! Your` virtual recreations are EXACT and true to the essence of this supreme design! The lower deck virtual tour is my dream come true! It is precise to every detail! I always wanted to "get down there" and really see it up close! The elevator test? Now that is my favorite part of the whole ship! THAT I REALLY LOVE! I could spend hours going up and down on that elevator!

This is what a remake of the Lost in Space should look like. Did not care for the 21st century version which injected too much current tech and redesign.
