  • I wrecked the bike. This video tells the story of how i wrecked the bike. Maybe its a cautionary tale, maybe I will get raked over the coals. We all make mistakes, and I've made a few. I was very lucky. Maybe this video is more for me than it is for you. If you get anything out of it, great. If you want to flame me in the comments, you can do that to. We all make decisions based on a risk/benefit analysis whether we realize it or not. I don't know where I am going to go from here. I have a bunch of small bikes I am still working on. Route 66 on a motorcycle is still on my bucket list. Will it ever happen - I don't know.

So sad to see such a machine meet its end but considering how you walked away from it maybe it had fulfilled its purpose. My journey began in the 90s when I saw a GL1500, a bike with towing hook, stereo, 6-cylinder engine, heck even ventilation. I live in a small town not too far from the polar circle where vehicles are culture as well as a necessity but that thing, that was something straight out of a boys wet dreams. That bike became my goal and as soon as I was of age I began taking my license. I failed, was not ready yet and the dreams where mothballed for a long time. Until 2017 when I started taking lessons again, practicing with a light yamaha and had this idea that I would go straight on to a GL. I got my license and with it some well needed sense so I found myself a 1100 Virago instead. Worlds apart from the trainer-bike, I felt like it was my first time on a bike and got scared of what a Goldwing would have done to me. Fast forward, 2023, my body and mind was ready. My life needed that Honda and now was the time so I found myself a midnight black GL1500SE on the other end of the country. Drove non-stop all day to pick it up unseen and then back in about 30 hours without sleep, happily on a cloud of wet childhood dreams. Even with years on the Virago I was bumped back to that feeling again with my first ride on the Goldwing, that I had no idea what so ever how to drive a bike. I love my GL but that thing scares me a little every time, it has this aura, this feel to it that you just don't disrespect it. Driving it takes a lot but fortunately also gives a lot. I do hope you get yourself a new one, in my eyes these are the epitome of two-wheeled comfort.

YIKES! I was with ya all the way up to the crash, OUCH! What i meant was, I am the same way, sitting here trying to find some tires for the cheapest price possible LOL I mean good tires, but cheap. i got my bike - same as yours but no rust, for 1 dollar per CC or less was my goal. I got a 1999 GL1500 that had been dropped twice in the garage I bought it from, once on the right side and ONCE ON THE LEFT. the old guy that sold it to me said he just didn't have the strength to keep it anymore and I told him about my challenge and he sold it to me for 1500 bucks. w/ mechanics manual, 3 helmets , four oil filters and he had just changed the oil. I rode it for a few miles and I was in love. didn't bother looking at the dot on the tires though. 2009 and 2010 elite 3's. I stubbornly have been riding it for 2 years this way, didn't even wash it. LOL no wrecks though. i just looked at the DOT this month and was shocked! You would not believe the places I have been on these old tires, I can push my thumbnail in them and the line stays. Most of the time I have ridden has been , Shorts, Teva sandals ( I have floor boards, and a tank top and Hawaiian shirt, blasting Lynyrd Skynyrd that's it. I decide to stop tempting fate however. Boots are hard to find in sz 17 But i will find something better than sandals. LOL The tires will make a huge diff. im at 75 thousand, i am going to try to hit 500,000 miles on this thing. so glad you didn't get hurt too bad man. That was a crazy story. Great Video, re affirms my new mission. I bet that elbow rash hurts.

Amazing how easy it is to get in over one's head. Thank-you for this video. You just might have saved some of us from a similar fate. It's easy to over look one's limitations. This video will stay with me for a long time. Thank-you David from Canada, eh?

Thank God you're okay, mate! As you say in the video you are lucky to have come out of that with only a few scrapes. I have been following your build videos as I inherited my father's 1998 Goldwing a couple of years ago and have got it back in running order. Your clutch slave cylinder video was priceless to me :) Thank you for posting the videos and for explaining what had happened on that fateful day. I can relate 100%, the wing is a big bike and while I've been riding my whole life (46 now) it is an intimidating bike. Your debrief on what happened is a valuable lesson to all, but accolades need to be given on your workmanship and the slightly larger safety net such a big bike provides. I truly hope you keep it, I feel like this chapter is not closed for you, and, if you do, I look forward to each and every episode of you and the Wing MkII living a peaceful life together. God speed, brother.

fix it I only see minor damage. I have lived in a Head on collision on a 93 SE that bike could not be saved May 24th 1994. I rear ended a car on a 95 SE rebuilt fairing forks small dent in frame where left radiator is located on top. I at the time had started a small motorcycle shop so I got all the parts at cost to rebuild it. The one thing I learned from that accident when you're in road construction slow down because girl flipped the stop sign she was holding to fast the car in front of me stopped, I was on gravel that was not in my mind being on good road till the girl turned her sign to fast and the bike skid then I just laid it down and jumped off the bike. no injury. Oh on the 93 I had no injury either though I felt like I had broken bones, but it was just muscles that were used took 4 weeks to heal. I went from a 81 Goldwing to a 86 Aspencade then to the 93 Wing. Then a 95SE repaired it and got 179,000 moles out of that bike. Found another 93 SE with 41,000 miles on it like 11 years back same two tone teal as my first 93 SE1500. I only had it for around 2 weeks after getting it back from WV. May 26th 2014. Riding at 45 to 50 miles a hour now 1/2 mile out in a field seen a dog running towards the north as I was headed North then took a road east that dog made it up to where I was in less the 60 seconds, and I hit it with the Wing I was thrown off the bike when it hit the dog by the rear wheel. Broke 3 ribs collar bone and csabai in rear left shoulder. Hospitalized for 3 days. Off work for 3 months 60 days later fixing the bike up to ride again needed crash bars on right and left side the bike hit the pavement hard on the left side that the crash bar punctured the valve cover then bike bounced back up and went up right for a little bit then wreaked on the right side in the dirt off the road not much damage. I was ridding again in September the Geico adjuster that totaled it was in the same parking lot he goes isn't that the bike we totaled in June Told him sure is I plastic welded the fairing that was cracked on the left new valve cover. I paid $5000 for the bike in WV insurance totaled it for $6,700. Now 5 years later had someone do a illegal lane change that forced me to hit the front of the car on the right side. First time laid bike down with a passenger. The bike just laid down in an interesting position we never got thrown from the bike just sat there for a second then got off. We were not injured. Bike needed just a crash bar on the right a valve cover and rear crash bar. 3 days later we took the 600 Lb RV (little bike pop up trailer). Then we headed to the Coast of Oregon for a week. Well hope you repair your ride and when you are fatigued. pull over and rest.

I'm so so sorry this happened to you. I want to thank you for posting the videos of the repairsyou did as they gave me the confidence to do my clutch and slave myelf this year as I've been losing fluid every spring. I'll be sad I won't see you making more Goldwing repairs as that's what drew me to your page.
    So glad you are ok

Thank you. Well I'm going to make a video of doing stem bearings on the 04 but it still can apply to older Wings.

Your story reminded me of my learning counter-steering my first '48 Indian Chief in the 1950's . I weighed about 120 lbs and was a self taught 15 1/2 year old trying to bank the 593 lb bike with my weight and winding up in the ditch, unhurt, a few times. I finally read an article in a Playboy magazine describing counter-steering which probably saved my life. I still have my 2nd Chief but don't ride any more at 85. If you have a passion for riding, hope you continue, if not, take up another engrossing hobby like RC model airplanes.

i always counter steer to do a corner i don't just lean. I lean the bike with counter steering slightly turn right to help the bike lean so you can go left, or turn right to encourage the bike to lean so you can go left.

First, thank goodness you’re Ok with no broken body parts.
I’m very sorry this happened (and very saddened 😢) for you.
I like your attitude of talking and even thinking about another bike at this time. (Far more mental toughness than most)
Thank you for sharing this entire adventure as I will be looking forward to the next. I have a 97 and you helped me learn and maintain it. Thanks

I've very happy to hear he came out of this with only road rash. Does anyone want to let me know what clay's skill level is? He said the GW was way beyond his skill level. I've got a few, quite a few miles on various Gold Wings and it didn't seem to me they take any different skill levels. I recently went from an old 82' Gold Wing to a R1150RT BMW. I've dropped the BMW a couple more times than I did the old wing. I got my first GW in 1979 and before that I'd had a Honda CB360T.

All I could say is he should not have been on a bike . Cant drive in rain , dont think he'd do very well in Scotland its hardly off . He would be stressed out of his box . No get a car bud stay off bikes.

I appreciate all the kind and supportive comments. It took me a long time to even decide to finish these videos and put this out. I am ashamed and embarrassed, but all the comments have been nothing but supportive and for that, I thank you all.

I know it’s only natural to feel ashamed and embarrassed, I’ve been there, but you can grow out of that and be better for it, if you keep moving forward.
These 90’s goldwings are the biggest of bikes, and there’s a high price to pay when we jump in over our heads. (That doesn’t mean we ride scared) You will get known your bike, you have already demonstrated a strong mental toughness by continuing the videos and the explanation.
      You Hang in There!

This is not uncommon. The biggest issue here was inexperience. Big boy bikes require big boy skills. Wings in particular need quite a bit of rider familiarity. You had some anticipatory anxiety which was telling you to stop. Btw, this issue of turn freeze is much more common if you smoke or injest weed. Just sayin.
