    Used to go out to Club 22 in Cadiz Ohio with Karen, Cecil, Jake, Tod, and Bill M. and dance to this--Cecil was probably the best dancer in the Ohio Valley. Karen and were only 17 but the guys bought us sloe gin fizzes and we danced all night long--no hanky-panky, just dancing to great music with great friends.

    Wow, look at these youngsters back then, enjoying being young, having a good time, and doing one helluva' job, dancing to one of the funkiest instrumentals ever known to man, R.I.P. to anyone of these individuals who are no longer with us...

    My auntie (now a youthful 68) was 18 when this song came out. I just asked her if she did this dance and her eyes lit up when she said yes. I couldn't convince her to dance with me though.

    Del Curtis, "Teen Time" host was none other than Del Demontreux, who gained fame on WHN, New York City, greatest country music station ever. I seem to remember his telling me some 30 years ago (I would call him at the station) that he worked in Steubenville. Also that was 1968, as July 5 was on Friday that year.

      +Ed_Salamon Ed, I've been reading your book about WHN, and I really enjoy it. Bob "The Wizard" Wayne was from my home county, namely Marion County, West Virginia. As I understand it, he had alcohol abuse issues. At findagrave.com, I saw his tombstone, and he died in September 1990 (I believe it was the 27th). I do know it was late September. He was only 48. If I ever get the chance, I'd like to meet the surviving WHN jocks. I know that Del Demontreux will be 70 on November 19. About how old is Lee Arnold? I'm guessing 85, or very close to it. Forgive me if this e-mail's too long, but I have several things I want to cover and will wrap up soon. 1050 in NYC is very directional. I could faintly get it where I've lived all my life. I also know that WHN had listeners all over the tri-state (NY, NJ, CT), but what borough had the most listeners? I asked one of the jocks one time (it may have been Mike Fitzgerald), but I'm not sure now, if WHN had any listeners in the Bronx, and he told me that he had a contest winner from the Bronx a few minutes earlier. I lived for trips to NYC to hear WHN. It was one of a kind, and it was my favorite radio station EVER. They started doing Mets games (their third stint) in 1983, and I credit WHN with making me a baseball fan. I didn't really get into baseball until '85, and for that season and the next, I lived and died with the Mets. When the Mets won the '86 World Series after their record-smashing regular season, I was a million miles on the other side of the moon with joy. Thanks so very much for your reply, and I'll try to get onto Facebook to see the WHN tribute.

    • @TheBrooklynbodine
      @TheBrooklynbodine 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mr. Salamon, for some reason, I've been locked out of my Facebook account. Could you tell me if Lee Arnold's still living, and if so, his age? I'd think he's in his upper 80s at least by now. I saw a youtube posting of him from 2013. I used to call him on his birthday (June 22), which he shares with, among many others, Kris Kristofferson, Todd Rundgren, Freddie Prinze, and I could go on and on.

    I love seeing these low-budget, low production value local teen dance programs, such as the one that is at the center of the movie "Hairspray." In my hometown of Louisville, it was called High Varieties, I think. In the town I currently live in, it was called Sump'n Else.

    There are a few others here and there, such as "Night Train" and 'The Beat," but for the most part you're right. Videotape was expensive in those days and most local stations could not afford to keep extensive archives, so a lot of such shows were erased. Few people at the time realized the importance of preserving such things.

    This was kind of cool. The couple on the platform did not do the horse the way Cliff Nobles did it on Groove In, but I believe it was typical to have different versions of dances in different areas across the country. For many dances from that time, there was a Philly version, a Detroit version, an L.A. version.... But I believe I read that the original dance (the horse) was popular in 1960 or thereabouts and the dance became popular again after the song was recorded.

    ~ See John Pela in New Orleans for Saturday Hop! R.I.P. Cliff Nobles! Del was speaking of the July 5 concert with Tommy James & the Young Rascals & Cliff Nobles & Co. Steubenville was definitely more fun in 1968. Google Steubenville, Ohio, Dean Martin, Wu-Tung Clan. Great state, Ohio, but with too many reversals though in the last 5 decades! Congrats and best wishes to COLUMBUS, CLEVELAND, CINCINNATI for successfully hanging on! Cheers, DAVEDJ ~

    From what I've learned, after hearing about this song from a friend whom danced to it in Jr-high (And got into big trouble for how she was dancing) is that it was originally released in '59. Can't believe it took 9-yrs to catch-on. Even harder to believe is how lame the dancing those kids were doing was, in light of what a frenetic hip-shaker parts of that song were. I know it's '60s-t.v., but still.

    What made Soul Train great was you had black kids who could dance and brought the soul. There were 60's black teen shows like Teenarama and others but unfortunately their footage is lost, but these shows brought the soul too. Anytime you put black kids together dancing, it's great. But Soul Train is the only black dance show that footage exist.
