      Yes! Exactly my sentiment when I dragged my mom and sis to see it in '88. I knew then that it was destined to be cinematic aberration and a mile stone in John Waters productions.

    My mom loved this scene, it really made her smile, she grow up in this era and she was happy how well the cast pulled the dance off. Every time this scene came on she couldn't help herself but to do it with them, brought back a lot of memories for her now I have great memories of her watching this. R.I.P mom.

      I was watching Hairspray one night with my mom and my niece. During one number, my mom just got up and started dancing. My niece was just tickled and I was a little in shock. My mom is not someone who would normally do that. I already loved this movie, but that made it so much better.

    I learned the Madison at a house party in St. Louis in 1959. This is the dance exactly.

    • @NelsonClick
      @NelsonClick 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Wayne Brasler I think that's great! I like the idea that if you know the dance moves...you're "IN". That's exactly what teens want and is more natural and organic. I came later in the 70's and it was if you had long hair and smoked pot you were "IN". Maybe I was born too late because to me learning dance moves and you're "IN" is better.

    • @waynebrasler
      @waynebrasler 9 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      NelsonClick There's more to the story! I went to a junior college that was half black and half white. We all got along just fine because the blacks and whites had nothing to do with each other except be polite. A group of us who ran the campus paper (which, the one semester I was managing editor, got the top rating from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association in New York City) included both blacks and whites and we worked together to get the two parts of the student body together. I won't go into how we did it, but we did do it, and that got me, a white boy, invited to dances at black home and I would bring with me friends from the suburban high school I came from. And, yes, dance and music proved a big part of bringing the walls of separation down without a great deal of drama.

    • @NelsonClick
      @NelsonClick 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Wayne Brasler That is a lot more. Thank you. Dance does that. I listen to a lot of 17th & 18th century music and specifically suites, minuets, sarabandes, etc. I realized the entire reason those were composed were to dance. The dance was the primary intent and the music was merely incidental. I wondered why and read that dancing was the only way men could interact with women that was safe and polite did not ruin a womens reputation.

    • @waynebrasler
      @waynebrasler 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      NelsonClick Music truly is timeless. History truly is ever-surprising. I am in my 60th year as president of a lady singer's international fan club and just finishing 16-page issue of the magazine I do. What we've learned over the years about her worldwide impact on cultures is amazing, and something she never anticipated. At the age of 84 she is still planning new projects.

    THANKS for posting, still the coolest line dance (and one of the trickiest) going. Although the Birdland step was left out of this, this is the best "version" I know of on film. They really get the moves and feel right.
    I used to work as a dance instructor, and had to teach this for some friends of mine getting married. Somone who originally danced on the Buddy Deane show, and taught us the missing step (the Birdland).

    The later musical was an OK feel-good show and movie, and made a lot of money for John Waters. But the original Hairspray was a truly subversive satire of the US of the '60s, in a way that the remake simply wasn't. Later generations who did not experience those times do not, and to be honest, really cannot understand that.

    This is the only way to watch Hairspray. My friend and coworker Linda Sickle isthe blonde dancing in the backround. I was so proud of her when she auditioned and was cast as one of the dancers. She's in the blue dress with with the white stripe down the middle with blonde hair.
