Hi everyone, I originally made this video as a school project when I was in high school. Crazy how it has become a representation of an older era in TH-cam. Hope everyone’s doing well.
I was a junior in high school when this came out. Fuck, time flies. I think it’s about time to dig out my Reel Big Fish and Streetlight Manifesto merch, throw on some ska, and skank like it’s 2009 all over again.
As we approach a million views and 10 years, I want to say thanks to the overwhelmingly positive responses to my sons school project. Ska lives in your heart and will never die.
I was showing my friend how I was Saturday cuz the bands were sick and she said that’s skanking 🤯🤯 I was like I feel like those animals that Fuvk but don’t know what sex is 😂 I was just tryna be the D.R.I logo!!
This has remained relevant because you so obviously had your heart and soul in it & weren't afraid of looking silly. That's the real key to successful skanking!
I've been dancing the skank since the '80's, but I never realized I could skank OUTSIDE of a club or off a dance floor! Thanks for expanding my awareness (and blowing my mind) of all the skank dancing possibilities. For my next 5k, I will be dancing the skank instead of jogging! Awesome vid.
I was skanking in the 80's to all the two tone sounds, great fun it was too, except we would do a hop and tap the inside of our foot to the person's opposite's inside foot. Then repeat the same movement with the opposite foot. We called that 'Moon Stomp'' . Kept us fit though, lol
I’m an 80s girl and I highly approve of your dance moves. Some of my friends in the 80s wore trench coats while skanking but your outfit is fine. Thanks for taking me back.
Same era…. I wore a trench coat going out and my plaid pants and knitted mod shirts to school. On Fridays I would wear my mod ensamble… black suit, hat and loafers. With mod bands pins on my lapel. I will be attending a big concert in Pomona Ca and there will be some ska bands. Gonna start practicing my dancing steps and hit the thrift shops for my outfit😝
Showed this video to my teenager. He and my oldest (25) love pretty much anything now considered to be retro. Thanks for the posting this. Good vibes, from good times!
Reminds me of my days in a ska band. Nothing better than performing while everyone is skanking on the dance floor, then afterwards skanking with everyone for the next band!
Bro, this was exactly what I was looking for!!! my skankin days were back in the late 80s and 90s but became disabled so can't really skank anymore but was trying to explain it to my kids, they picked up quick thanks to you and had a good laugh Thank you and hope you're doing well
I remember dancing like this back in the 90s, I was at a Reel Big Fish concert. Lol I love that they called the one move 'picking up change' because we called it the exact same thing
I've spent over a decade evangelizing the music of ska and part of that journey for me started with this video. When I teach people how to skank at shows, I have this video to thank.
I saw this video for the first time 4 years ago, and it was very helpful, I learned my first skank here. Always come back to see this whenever I feel bad, remembering that wonderful era makes me feel happy somehow. Thanks, hopes this never dissapear cause is pure GOLD.
total dorks? no. young people having fun dancing, like young people used to before all this stupid bullshit arrived on the scene. so many people, especially kids, are way too uptight about this sort of thing these days. it's cool seeing young folks kicking back, relaxing and having fun without this weird self-conscious "too cool" attitude....more of them should do it more often, so good job on the vid guys. stay mellow! :)
Quite a big difference between British and American SKA by the looks of things. In Britain you'd be wearing braces, doc martins, a ckecked Ben Sherman shirt with jeans with roll ups and possibly a harrington
The authentic British look was revived in NYC and East Coast Ska scene during the 90's. It remains iconic. The Ska Skater punk look came out of American suburbia in the mid to late 90's as Ska went "mainstream".
Lovely one. My son (18) used your vid to prepare himself to ga tonan Interrupters concert with his dad and his mates. He was skanking thru the house and his practice showed off at the concert Thanks to the younger you and the current you for keeping this video alive. All the best from the Netherlands
This is too good man, truly a masterclass on Skanking! A few years ago my best friend's dad told us the story of how he literally tore his ACL while dancing at a bar during his college days and when I asked him what he was dancing to, he said he was marching to some random Ska band that was playing locally that night. I can definitely see how that could happen while doing aggressive leg-kicking moves on a floor that has more beer on it than inside of the kegs they're pouring from at the bar lol.
Damn. Just think. I learned about ska from Scooby-Doo. And now this. THIS saved my life even tho recently I never saw skaboys/girls, but yet thanks m8, u did a lot to me
As a big time Rude Girl who skanked her way through many a late 90s early 2000s show (toasters, reel big fish, drop kick Murphy's, SGR, drive thru pharmacy...)- hell, I even got knocked out by an elbow skanking at our high school un-talent show! I was very proud to teach my 8 year old to skank around the Christmas tree this year; I think next year I'll show him this tutorial and we'll make skanking around the Christmas tree a real tradition!
Your vid is popular because everyone likes to watch kids being kids. Secondly, whether you've know it or not, you've hit a nostalgia vibe with how kids used to be in the early nineties. Your kit in the living room, your chucks, the faded sorta grunge look, an actually being active with your friends instead of actively scrolling on a phone. Makes me wanna be a kid again.
This video is deeply fun, thank you. Though I had to stifle a laugh when he said skinny jeans were a mandatory. Oh sweet boy, in my generation we skanked in jeans so big they can have spanned the mighty Mississippi. We hunted these jeans thither and yon 'cross the Plains, using box canyons to force the jeans over a cliff so we could kill them once wounded, for the jeans were so mighty, no man could kill one through strength of arm alone
Bro I’m a 40 year old punk and I love seeing this still alive. I like to karaoke shipping up to Boston and skank it up, the young guys always get it there. We gotta keep the scene alive.
Dude, that cracked me up. Thanks for the entertainment. I love to skank. The bosstones and reel big fish always get me skanking up a storm. It's pretty cool that you mentioned mustard plug. My favorite skanks on here were the surprise skank, picking up chance skank, and the tom petty skank.
1:38 Bob's first hit songs were ska songs. "Judge not" and "Simmer down" are some of 'em. He did a lot of ska just like any other artist in Jamaica in the early 60's. So he definitly has something to do with ska.
I love to learn. Today, I learned that many forms of Skank are good, and Scissors Skank is BAD, it's DANGEROUS. Thank you, Mike, for these valuable lessons.
Thank you for this video after skankin for 30+ years it was good to show my kids it is a thing. I think though I'm about 80 % on the different types of skankin
As he started going over the proper wardrobe for skanking i realized i was already wearing it. 1. streetlight manifesto shirt 2. skinny jeans 3. converse 4. checkered socks (not that they were visible but it still counts)
this was very informative, in a few milliseconds I already understood the basics of Skank If it werent for this video my wife never wouldve came back with the kids thank you Mike Matza ;))
Very fun video! I suggest you submit it to some film festivals. They always need cool short films to fill out a time slot . This video will appeal to a lot of people who attend film fests.
We did 80% of these back in the 90's. We would skate it, dominate it, then skank it! Kudos on the trampoline skank! I saw you and remembered how dead my legs were after we battled once!
sooo many skanks! i had no idea. thank you this was very helpful. and now i will practice before going to see the specials sept 9 at terminal 5. again, tia -- you are the best.
Hi everyone, I originally made this video as a school project when I was in high school. Crazy how it has become a representation of an older era in TH-cam. Hope everyone’s doing well.
Mike Matza as your pop I want to let you know how great a man you have become. Here is to the next million likes.
Because everyone likes Bob.
I was a junior in high school when this came out. Fuck, time flies. I think it’s about time to dig out my Reel Big Fish and Streetlight Manifesto merch, throw on some ska, and skank like it’s 2009 all over again.
Good to see you're still skankin', rudeboy.
P.s. you're almost to a million views, holy shit!
I fucking died after I found out that skanking in a circle was called skircle.
I did that at Riot Fest 2021 during the Bosstones, was so fun.
I believe that's called a circle pit bro.
@@MacaqueStinx watch the video
The Skircle Skerk is really where it's at.... all the cool kids are doing it.
Usually done after the show, though. 😮
I don't care what anyone says this video is pure gold
watch it every night before bed
thank you my son did it so long ago the boy loves to dance
Yesss
If you watch before bed you will not grow old
Just found this and i 1000000% agree
This video is ahead of it's time.
Just in time for the Ska revolution of 1999
Bro you were right
On whose body?
I was thinking the same thing. His YT skills are better than most YTrs nowadays
SKA IS BACK, THIS IS THE VIDEO WE NEED
As we approach a million views and 10 years, I want to say thanks to the overwhelmingly positive responses to my sons school project. Ska lives in your heart and will never die.
This is so cute
Thank you both
Absolutely!! I wanna get a hold of Mike! 😊
you raised your boy right

Ska isn't dead, it lives on in the hearts of skanking rudeboys and rudegirls everywhere.

Still lives 2018 ✊🤘🤙
Definitely still alive :)
The tutorial we didn't know we needed, but we needed all along
+Saint V such a nice thing to say, mike matza
I didn't need it.
"we all know life is good, but life isn't that good when you're skanking" new motto
Thanks to this I'm going to be the coolest skanker at the Reel Big Fish concert!
This has remained relevant because you so obviously had your heart and soul in it & weren't afraid of looking silly. That's the real key to successful skanking!
If skanking doesn't make you happy, you need help.
Makes me happy for the first 5 min, then I'm like... Is that the only move there is?? Too repetitive...
@@jckdnls9292 There are different skanking dance steps.
@@MasterMalrubius Like the skirkle
It will make you look kinda dumb but it will make the monster go away
@@zazaful9582 I'm gonna be honest, I completely forgot about this video and I'm so happy someone commented and brought it back into my life.

Kendra Reed afraid to say he fell when he was skanking and now he’s dead rip jk lol
Years ago, this video was one of the three major things to kickstart my love of ska. Still one of my favorite things to go back to
According to Google, this is the authority on skanking in 2023. Some day, this will be in the Library of Congress
Watching this in 2019 and my life is transformed.

This video makes me so happy. It's like I just hopped in a time machine and was thrown into a local VFW, skanking with my friends again.
well said time travel is real Mike Matza

Tap the foot that's on the floor or in the air?
Gotta add the Cherokee two steep with the skanking half steep while in the circle pit. If you know you know. Dancing at full speed collision.

Trench coats kinda fell off after the whole columbine situation
