Very good video. I'm a retired senior teaching my friend how to stick weld, but I'm kind of rusty myself. It's been over 40 yrs since I was a professional welder, however it's all coming back fast. The basics are all still there. The metals, rods. techniques, and amperage are still the same. Your video is a very helpful refresher course. You explain it very well. I'll try to explain it to him as well as you do. I'll also show him your videos too. Back when I started welding, there wasn't much instruction. They just said.... Do it ! and you basically taught yourself. It feels good to pass along years of experiance on to the next generation.

Thanks Tim. I am new at welding and love being able to stick two pieces of metal together without nuts and bolts. I have applied much of the good advice you give on this channel. Yesterday I needed to weld a nut onto a flathead allen screw I was removing (my allen wrench broke) from a tooth on a backhoe. Maybe you could give a few tips for doing some real world applications. I watch guys like Andrew Camarata welding all the time, but most of them are doing mig and I just want to do stick.
Keep up the good work. There are a lot of us depending on you!

I got an antique Marquette Redi-Arc myself, I have done many farm equipment repair jobs over the years, on most occasions I use 6013 and have ran pounds of it and it has been my favorite rod to run. If I am concerned over strength I run a couple root passes with the 6013 then I cap that with 7018 for high stress joints or anything taking tons of abuse. Hope your new buzzbox serves you well, I'm sure it will

Love your videos, Tim! I've learned a lot! Something that almost every video I've watched from a variety of demonstrators is that they hardly ever talk about if they are running ac or dc. Amperage is vastly different between the two. I started with using an old Lincoln tombstone ac machine that I tried 1/8" plate with 1/8" rod at 130 amps because that's what videos described to use. I'm sure you know what mess was made. Anyway, thanks very much for your great content!

Have an old oil cooled welder which I inherited from my Grandfather... have no idea how to adjust amperage on the thing. It has 5 posts - I keep the ground on the 1st one, moved the hot side to the 4th post from 3rd post... did I increase or decrease amps or ummnh.
Been welding on and off for about 10 months now. Recently really started putting in time - making furniture and decor items out of 1.6mm to 3mm thick square tubing and anything else I can salvage. It's hard to get anything either than 6013 at the local stores ( run 2.6 and 3.2
Recently made a cabana tent frame, which I actually tested out today at a wedding ( it held up great ). Your videos are very informative & useful. Online tutorials are the go to for guys with interest and a low budget * Salute for helping the cause *

What I didn't learn from this is how to determine the correct amperage. Do I set up some type of little test area on some other metal? Do I test on the actual project in some way? Is it better to weld in the dark?
I"ve always wanted to learn, but have so many questions when watching videos like these. Guess I need to find some welding 101 vids.

    • @yuta5026

You always want to start off with a practice piece to get the right amps. Usually 6010 is 70-90 amps. 90 being high. You can use 70-75 no problem. Just play around and see for yourself. For 7018 never go below 110. Generally between 120 and 140. But 120-130 works well for me. I adjust accordingly. Sometimes I move it up or down a couple amps and thats all I need.

    I always enjoy your videos.
An although I have been welding for some years now, I have a lot to learn and need a lot of training. Still working to get a good técnico to make a weld that it is dependable. I mean something that won't brake and will resist the stress it is put to the it. I'm an working right now on a part that you put under the back part of your truck to pull a trailer. I'm using angle iron 2 by 1/4" and E7018 electrode 1/8 thick. I'm worry about every weld I have to do that. It is for my car. And after I have in mind building the trailer itself.
Dont have your email or any other way to contact you Tim. But I do really thanks you for your helping videos I am 61 years old, used to work as a software developer but it is so stressful and last year I got fired just because I was 60 years old, working at a bank.

@@richardsmuin7665 well for people who have the money to burn I agree but for someone who doesn't or just does this for a hobby like myself...stick is much more feasible and I don't have to pay for gas as well as wire to be able to run my machine...besides when done correctly it may not be as fast but I can produce just as good if not better penetrating welds that are just as strong with a stick...but like previously mentioned, it's just a hobby for me so I don't feel the need to spend a ridiculous amount on a mig welder and have to worry about always having gas or needing to refill the bottles migs require to be able to run their wire... Without the gas that wire weld isn't going to be strong or consistent

There are kind of 2 meanings. The force I’m talking about is a literal force propelling metal across the arc. The setting on the machine increases amperage when the arc gets really short (based on the arc voltage). The higher the setting, the greater the extent of this amperage increase. It’s pretty useful for cellulosic rods (6010 & 6011) which require some manipulation of the electrode like a whip and pause. For rods where you weld with steady movement (7018 or 6013), it won’t do much for you and I would keep it turned down.

Hi Tim. I’m just getting into Mig welding and want to know if you could do a video on welding galvanised or zinc coated steel and the safety aspects of it?
It would be very helpful to learn the preparation and what to look out for. Cheers!

There is such thing as zinc fume toxocity. You can look it up. Its not good to breath in the fumes too much. You probably know this already. I dont think a little will hurt but dont qoute me on that.
