  • Sixth-generation ute addresses almost all of the shortfalls of its predecessors 👉 Full Review: www.carsales.com.au/editorial...
The all-new 2024 Mitsubishi Triton lands in Australia with a big task ahead of it.
Long revered as the underdog of its class, in which it has traditionally been the country’s third most popular ute behind the Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger, the Triton looks to continue its legacy as a value-focussed workhorse but this time with higher pricing, a more powerful new twin-turbo diesel, class-leading payload and towing capability and a roomier, more upmarket interior.
However, the first new Mitsubishi Triton since 2015 faces stiff competition - not only from established rivals, but a slew of forthcoming Chinese utes.
Sam Charlwood jumps behind the wheel for our first Australian drive of the showroom-spec 2024 Mitsubishi Triton on the eve of first customer deliveries.

Appreciate the feedback from all and sundry - we love the engagement whether it's good or bad. Ultimately the truth sometimes hurts - we all wanted the Triton to be a Ranger-slayer and it's not quite there. But a 75/100 score is very good, especially when you look at our average car review scores across our editorial. Is it so hard to believe the new Triton is unlikely to match the Ford Ranger, which has been the benchmark vehicle for a decade and has a research and development budget that dwarfs the Triton? Ranger also sells in more countries and is the top-seller in many countries - including Australia. Sam wouldn't be doing his job if he didn’t reference it…

Ford Ranger has dominated for so long, it would be remiss of us not to talk about it. It'd be like talking about Nirvana or the Foo Fighters without mentioning the band that inspired them and the grunge movement, Black Flag. Anyway, we have to respond to these claims of 'Ford' bias or bribes because its not true. We know we're not gonna convince you or anyone else with their blinkers on, because you're already in your echo chamber and probably aren't able to put yourself in the shoes of others.
We're enjoying the engagement and it's good for other people reading the comments to see that we're not corporate shills - our group of journalists are actually very insightful individuals and staunchly independent. Also no one really expected it to slay the ranger as the price is not asking for that, we just wanted better and they have delivered by the looks. i think you need to see it for what it is and not what you personally wanted from it, I have also adjusted my expectations on your future reviews.

I feel like "not moving the needle" is overused here and so are the constant comparisons to the Ranger. Here are my reasons for that.
Why fix something that isnt broken? That sentence is pretty overused too, but its definitely true. That 6 speed cruiser transmission is bulletproof. The block and head design in the 2.4 is tried and tested and has been just about Toyota levels of bulletproof as well. Digital clusters are completely subjective. Off-road the previous model Triton was head and shoulders above the Ranger off road, this one probably is too. Super Select 2 has been in Tritons since the stone ages, Ford only recently "moved the needle" and by that i mean copy. The hard plastics in the cabin seem to never wear out, even after a couple of hundred thousand kms. Thats just a few examples. You dont need to move the needle when its already working so well. Ontop of that, you ONLY start thinking about trying to progress the dual cab segment once you have the fundamentals sorted.
Ford try so hard to move the needle sometimes that they fail to even get the fundamentals right, and they also drive up the price or manufacture by doing so, hence the crazy price tag. Their diffs break open still, which is unforgiveable. Their after sales support is absolurely hands down the worst in the industry without question. Random small things fail quickly like door handles, central locking, cabin lights, bearings, radiators and the list goes on and on. You can never drive a Ford and be completely "comfortable" that its going to get you home, definitely a fundamental which it misses the mark on.
I cannot help but feel like a review should be taking everything into account, the whole package, especially when you're using the Ranger as a yardstick. In my opinion this review is definitely falling short of doing that. Atleast Mitsubishi get the base car right the first time, dont think ive ever witnessed a Ranger do that.
But hey at least the review matches the Ranger, can't even get the basics right.

Mitsubishi was ahead of their time with the MLs with comfort, power, off road capability, reliability and their turning circle. we had to drive for a kilometre up bush to find a spot to turn around in the ranger, the triton could turn around where ever it was, no need to look for a place to turn around on the dirt roads or any roads.

No doubt there are shortcomings with the new Triton, but this is a pretty poor effort at an independent review from this guy. Yes, lights, power, movable tie down points and tail gate damping and some type of standard tray cover should be included in a ute of this price point, not to mention the rear brakes. First of all one would think he is a Ford PR guy, I find it interesting how he talks about Ford so much, a lot of comments like "doesn't hold mustard to something like the new Ford Ranger", "not as lush in the back here as a high level Ford Ranger", "no inovation here, I look at something like the Ford Ranger", "it's not as composed nor as quiet as something like the Ford Ranger, let's treat that like the dual cab yard stick because it is", and on. With regard to those comments I would suggest one wouldn't expect the Triton to be as lush as the Ranger when it's about $11,000 - $12,000 cheaper, perhaps he should have compared the Triton to a similarly priced Ranger and then done his comparison. And re the Ranger being the yard stick I don't know where he got that, Triton has a better warranty from a company that is far more reputable when it comes to backing their product. I mean the Ford can't even produce a Ranger that doesn't destroy it's own engine when the EGR system goes crap, it's a known problem, it's not backed by Ford, and I've read it happens with engines with as low as 85,000km, a friend of mine had his Ranger crap itself in the middle of nowhere due to that exact same problem, 135,000km on the clock. Yes Ranger is the top selling car, but that doesn't make it the yard stick; I'd suggest that title should go to Hilux.

had a mates ranger blow a wire in the transmission causing it to loose 4th gear nearly costing a whole new gear box, luckily they found the problem. and another person i know of had their transmission not engaging so he paid to fix it and then a couple weeks later the thing blew up.

Sam what are you talking about for heavens sake? You seem so abscured and blinded by either your biased knowledge or just bad info? Please get behind the wheel of the XLT and Wildtrak Rangers again, drive them in dusty conditions dry and very hot temperatures and both would be giving and having issues like hell. They regularly break down because of mechanical issues, either the diff or the engine blows out. I've driven and tested them over and over. The plastics they use inside the cabin of the new ranger are aweful. Hard surfaces. The cabin feels exactly the same size as it's stil the T6 platform, albeit re- configured here and there. Then there is the large screens not Australian or South African conditions friendly either. They give issues like freezing. Then you need to restart the thing. A old Triton of 2011 still runs even with old tech. But boy this new one sure as hell has the looks ( just my opinion), and judging what other reviewers have to say about just how good it drives, rides, the lasting expensive feel of materials used and the 4x4 system of Super select that is IMCOMPARIBLE and the Best to the Rangers very standard at best of road capability, tested in both South Africa and Namibia. Believe me, driven them they rattle, they do brake they have lots of diff, engine and technical issues here. You'd be better of with the Japanese reliable utes/ bakkies one of which remains the Triton by a far mile. 😉 The rangers here at least are using cheap surfaced plastics in there interior accept the Wildtrak. Ranger reliability is a cause of concern as is poor Marketing from Mitsubishi in countries like South Africa and Namibia. But the Mitsubishi products are second to Non certainly not the Ranger, maybe the Hilux if ever....cheers.🍺

Sorry but having people smell BS with your review including me, your explanations here in the comments won't make your reputation any cleaner either. We get that the Ranger is the benchmark except for reliability & durability, but having compared even the most useless things to it? Hmmm yeah it does smell a bit biased.
Having driven one myself and the others as well, it is much closer to the Ranger Wildtrak and beats the other variants of it very much. Plus with the new engine(4N16 vs the old 4N15), it does give you a lot more pull noticeably for me to know that your sentiments for the 4N16 motor is the one falling short and not the engine itself.

I am unsure why a vehicle costing 20K less and has similar features but apparently is not class leading. The value meter tells me to buy this over a Ranger and save roughly 10 - 20 K that's a lot of holidays or tools that will create me extra income in my business. Just a thought. from a tradesman not an office worker.

Its genuinely disappointing to see Mitsubishi come out like this.
    Japanese engineering, design and build.
Yet they fall short on almost everything.
I really wish to see them make not just a value vehile that does 75% of the industry leaders but to strive towards making the best vehicles to challenge those leaders.
Pretty soon, the chinese utes will become household names.
They offer more, their reliability will catch up if not surpass the Japanese and then they'll put brands like the Triton in the ground...and I dont really think I want to see that.
Also, theres so much opportunity for a true Ranger competitor, for those buyers who love what Ranger offers but expect reliability and longevity as well, not just fancy screens and gadgets and a bunch of plastic mechanicals as a trade-off.
We all know what Toyota will release, controversially styled, good tech, high price, same engines. Maybe a sticker pack with some orange shock absorbers and marine carpet.

I think it overpriced by atleast 5k. Regarding the instrument cluster not being digital is a good thing being its a 4x4 for offroad last thing you need is a digital cluster stop working like the rangers. While i understanding comparing it to to the ranger what people need to remember the ranger has high sales because every 2nd person owns one in the city to go down to the shop 😂. I was super keen to buy the new triton gsr however when the pricing came out i was shocked 5yrs ago the mr triton gsr was like 50k i believe the these big companies has used covid to increase prices and not bring them back down. Australia get shafted constantly by these 4x4 salesmen with pricing we pay alot more then other countries
