Love that you’re getting all these amazing Trick-Taking and Shedding games from Japan played. There’s so many out there with little twists it’s fascinating. Hope you continue to find joy in them! Someone from the discord I’m on is introducing you to them and that’s fantastic! Thanks for everything Jamey!

I've heard great things about that Discord! Yeah, Pete has shared a bunch of them, as has another friend, Henry.

Another trick taker with some public information is 9 Lives. It was just reprinted from Japan, I think from Board Game Tables. Anyway, one of the interesting aspects is that the color of the card is on the back as well, so that the hand you're holding shows how many of each color card you have as public information.

I enjoyed my first play of 9 Lives too! I have a video coming for it soon.

I love this! I just played it again last week! I wish someone would reprint this! I used Stick’em Cards and Las Vegas Dice since you can’t buy it anywhere

Cool to see this game getting some attention! I also had to make a proxy using a Stick'em deck and some dice I bought :). Hope it does get re-printed and keeps the beautiful art by Sai Beppu!

Cat in the Box is interesting with the played numbers board showing information.

Trump determination in Nosoku Dice reminds me of another trick taking game, Mu. In Mu, there is a Major and Minor trump, and if one is a color and the other a rank, then they serve as a longer trump combining both elements.

You probably know (from your previous studies) that nokosu (残す) means "to leave behind" or "to set aside." Makes sense now that you describe the game. Curious about this one!

Indeed! Though, ironically, that's the part of the game I struggle a bit with in terms of player agency. :)

Easily one of the best trick-taking games ever

I'm glad you enjoyed it! I really liked the use of dice, but I struggled with the lack of agency over both types of leftover dice. It's a core hook to the game, but I wish I could choose my nokosu die before the round begins (and that the trump die could be set before the draft).

so what does it need the cards for?

    • @jameystegmaier

You use both dice and cards. The key differences are (a) cards are printed instead of randomly rolled, so there's an even distribution of numbers on the cards and (b) cards are hidden until played, unlike the dice.

Very different game, but the card game Sheepshead has a strange trump suit: all queens and jacks, and all clubs. So that’s a game where you have to get used to the idea that trump is signaled by suit and by value. That doesn’t change from hand to hand, however.
