Sam is so genuine, sharing what thought and understanding of the story he is called to portray. It is always a joy to hear him share his process with us and even give credit to the support that happens within the other departments and staff of the Outlander cast. The Outlander books are one journey we are able to experience and the Outlander show is another. I surely hope it will go on even though it maybe a long wait for that to happen.
I love Outlander; the books which I’ve read 3 times over and I love the series! Cait n Sam (along with every other actor) continues to impress and amaze! Thank you guys for continuing to play these characters!
I think for Claire, Murtagh dying left a huge hole in her life for her as well. Murtagh was the first Highlander she met when she first arrived in the 18th century. To loose that last link, must have been heartbreaking
I very much enjoy watching Outlander, you have made me want to visit my mothers homeland more and more. She was born in Dalgeish Scotland, so I thankyou . Keep up the the great work love from 🇨🇦
The death of Murtagh brought forth a deep anguish from Jamie, which Sam revealed beautifully. But the scene that got to me in a completely visceral way in Episode 9 was when it looked like Jamie was going to die. I knew that the show would not actually kill him off, but for a few seconds, I felt sheer terror at the thought that we could lose him. That was when I knew what Jamie meant to me and what his death would mean for Claire. I sat there, breathless, my heart beating so hard that I could feel it, and my face wet with tears! Thank God, she brought him back from his “near death” experience. The whole sequence devastated me! Well done!
I'll never understand why Duncan was not part of the early panels for the show. He was after Tobias, one of the original leads of the show. After season one Duncan was the defacto third part of the mix that was Jamie and Claire. I'll miss Murtagh 'verra' much.
@@csengetoth2449 I think he elevated both Sam and Cait's performances. I mean that scene in The Fiery Cross when Jamie told Murtagh "be hard to find".... Ugh, Sam's tears gutted me.
I wonder how many of the cast have read the books? And of those, did they find it helpful in how they perceive their characters or have an effect on how they think of their character's motivations? For those that have not read any of the books, upon what do they draw to accurately represent their character in the world created by Diana Gabaldon? The books are really well done, and though the series differs, often greatly, from them, it is still also a well done production. One CARES about the characters and that is a gift. The casting is key.
Most of the cast say that they read the books but only read the books progressively as the seasons go on, they read the next book prior to the filming of the stories in that book. Of course that excludes the characters that aren’t in the books or the characters that survive the death in the books like Murtaugh. Sam actually has Diana’s phone number and consults with her directly about his character.
Thanks for posting this excerpt from this year's Outlander PaleyFest but as much as I enjoyed the TV series and truly enjoy these interviews, I've noticed during interviews, when Sam Heughan is asked an open ended question like this one he doesn't talk about the experience for him as a person and as an actor. Instead, he recounts what happened in the scenes. I mean no disrespect for Sam. I think he is answering these questions because he thinks that is what is called for. However it would be great IF we ever get to see a Season 6 (at this rate, who knows?) you would try to draw him out and get him to talk about how he prepared for these emotionally and psychologically charged scenes. He's an excellent actor and I think it would be more interesting for viewers. As someone who studied acting and pursued a career in acting years ago, I'd like to know more about his process.
Amy Whitman so many times in interviews he gives all the credit to others also. He’s so humble and so good to others and that’s part of what we love about him!
Such a kind hearted and great actor. Kudos to all the casts and crew. Thank you for bringing us Outlander.

Yes, I totally agree. Murtagh is one of my favourite characters, not to mention that Duncan's performance is amazing throughout the seasons.

He very seldom answers the questions. It’s like he gets side tracked talking and then doesn’t answer the question.
amy, i wonder if much of the preparation occurs at a level below consciousness and is thus difficult for the actor to describe.
