As a Geordie myself I love this song. It brings happy memories of my fav TV show of the 80s Auf Wiedersehen Pet. Great effort on the Geordie accent by the way. Well done!
My dad was a bricklayer and went to Germany to work during tough economic times in England. He made good money but worked hard. Made some good German and Dutch friends along the way. The song has always meant a lot to me now my dad is dead
I'm a Geordie born and bred, so this song means a lot to me. I actually went to the same school as Mark, Gosforth Grammar School, he is 5 years older than me so I never mixed with him, I wish I had. I've seen him live many times and his performances are truly incredible
I'm a Geordie too. And I love this song, and as us Geordie's would say " it's canny good like" . Great reaction as always guys. The smiles on your faces are so lovely to see as you both listen to the music. Thanks
Thank you for your lovely reaction! A great song to keep the spirit level high 🙃 Always love Mark's play on words. Also love the slow guitar fade out of this full studio version. There is another video where Mark is talking about his guitars and says something like "If you get to the end of a vocal and you've got nothing more to say but maybe the guitar has". I think that really describes the way he always uses two soulful voices to tell every story, his own and his guitar.
I'm genuinely glad that you two are slowly but very strongly getting a grip of Mark's great creative genius which is always subtle, never goes overboard but of a very very strong foundation! Due to that strength he is still in our heart and we never ever get tired of listening to DireStraits or Mark since his begining till date❤ Love Mark and welcome to Mark's world....love you two❤❤
Another song suggestion for you both, which has an affinity with this one would be Jimmy Nail & Mark Knopfler, the song being Big River. Jimmy Nail's great tune of life from years past on the Tyne, from his own life/childhood perspective.
He’s one of my favourite guitarists. He doesn’t play to ‘show off’ or however you want to word it. He just plays with feel and for the song. Brilliant 👍
Fantastic song from Mark, great guitar riff too. The outro is lovely, just gentle guitar played with feeling, something a lot of players lack, which makes Mark stand above them. You should react to the documentary A Life In Songs, if that is not the one you mention here.
More master-class for Mark. Melody, structure, rhythm, musicians hip, lyrics, meaning, emotion... I suggest "So Far from the Clyde" for story-telling that pulls on your heart ❤️
There was a British black comedy series in the eighties called 'Auf Wiedersehen Pet' about British construction workers in Germany, the 'pet' being a Geordie affectionate term for those they liked. This was a big thing back then, Brits working in Germany and Saudi Arabia.
His stories always tell stories. Check out Marbletown about hobos ridding the rails, and hiding out in the cemetery to escape the authorities. Or Baloney Again about a black man trying to get his family cross country safely.
Did you guys watch the documentary Mark did with Brian Johnson from AC/DC? They both grew up in the same area and they chat and reminisce about their youth and influences. Brilliant watch.
Im really getting sad. Ive been waiting for your reaction to Jackson Browne's "Running On Empty" but its just not happening. You've even reacted to other Jackson Browne tunes since i first started begging for "Running On Empty"..... ( P.S. im not really sad) I might be exaggerating, but I'm excited to see you guys react to this tune. I KNOW you'll love it. Love you guys!

Wonderful song. Wonderful reaction.
I remember being at the show hearing the first public performance of this song prior to its release. Jimmy Nail was on stage with them too.

Mark always says less is more, he's just something else 🤷🏻♂️
a contemporary folk song in every sense of the word !
Awesome. Love it ❤

You should try and find the video of Jimmy Nail singing Big River on which Mark plays the guitar
As a German ❤ love the song.
Check out one of his live versions of this song. Just amazing
Proud to be a Geordie....thank you! Reminds me of the TV series 'Auf Wiedersehen, Pet'.
More master-class for Mark. Melody, structure, rhythm, musicians hip, lyrics, meaning, emotion...

Jimmy Nail singing the 'Why Aye' parts

Great song, quite a few people might mention it was used as the theme tune for the 4th season of Auf wiedersehen Pet, british tv series.
With two of the shows lead actors, Jimmy Nail and Tim Healy, singing backing vocals.
❤❤❤
A song for you featuring Mark in guitar. It’s Jimmy Nail - Big River. Great track a geordie lad here from Newcastle.
If you like this song you should react to big river by Jimmy nail
More Mark please

Really reminds me of Auf Wiedersehen Pet
