The song is specifically about how the music she grew up with brings her back to her memories of her earlier life, just as when I listen to music I loved in college instantly brings me back to those days. Listening to older music before one’s time is different.

I totally agree!! Not having them in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame is just wrong, and casts doubt on the credibility of the selection process in my opinion. They should just have their own Carpenters Hall of Fame, they’ve sold enough records and have enough fans.

If James Taylor is in the R&R Hall of Fame, these two should be also. They have brought to the American culture classic songs of remembrance. They won in 1970 an award as trend setters. They set the stage for the softer sound of the early 1970's and were the best selling American group between 1970 and 1980.

The Carpenters used to jam in my grandparents garage with my uncle. My mom was 12 and Richard would give her piano lessons. This was before they got famous. This would have been around 1965 - 1968.

@Larry Mead: IKR, That’s Exactly, that’s what I’m screaming!!??? Lol What is he talking about?!
I never heard anything about drugs, she had an eating disorder, anorexia which is sad, she wasnt overweight but the media put that into her head starting with a magazine article calling her “chubby”, which shows how powerful words can be and effect ppl. When she tried to later recover from the disease, it over taxed her body and heart causing a heart attack resulting in her death, I’ve never known of drug problems or her brother “feeding her pills”. I wasn’t there, but that’s just hard to believe! From what I gathered over the many years of my life is they were really close siblings, I think maybe she felt her mother praised her brother’s talents above hers, but I’m curious as to where that comment was coming from too! My mom has some hand written letters from The Carpenters regarding music, that’s another story, but they were and r still my moms #1! I’m not an expert on their lives or music but I know it pretty well, Juss sayin. Also at first she just wanted to play the drums and kinda fade into the back, she didn’t wanna be the main attention, can u imagine that!?

Im on my late 60s, so remember KC very well on the radio and TV specials. She began, with her brother Richard, by playing drums. Richard, her brother, was a terrific arranger but KC's voice was discovered by Herb Alpert in 1969 which began their road to fame. Richard convinced her that her best singing voice was contralto, 'the money is in the basement'. I believe KC's, voice, especially contralto, was the best female voice ever. No auto-tune, stripping, gimmicks, or screaming. Her nickname was 'one take', since she always sang a song once in studio without a single re-take. She sang to you with mesmerizing emotion, perfect pitch and enunciation. Her voice compelled you to listen. She had no professional voice training. Paul McCartney said she sang Ticket To Ride better than the Beatles, and "she had the most angelic voice I have ever heard". John Lennon told her at an LA restaurant "you have a fabulous voice luv". EVERY female harmony in ALL of her songs was HERs as well, sang, then dubbed into the song by Richard. They were most successful in early/mid1970s when she received 4 grammys. She was also recognized by 1975 Playboy poll as rock drummer of the year. She never knew true love, nor how good she really was. Check other songs such as 'Superstar' 'Solitaire', 'Only Yesterday', 'Hideaway', 'Rainy Days and Mondays','I Can Dream Cant I', 'Hurting Each Other', 'Need To Be In Love', 'Goodbye To Love', 'Someday', etc.. She had low self-image, and could never seem to please her mother. She had a few friends including Petula Clark and Dionne Warwick. She had serious onset of anorexia in 1975 that continued the rest of her life. Married a guy in 1982 that was broke, not who she thought, and mistreated her. Never knew true love. She died Feb 1983 at 32yo due to complications from anorexia. [Some info contained herein came from documentaries such as, "Only Yesterday]"

Her brothe (Richard Carpenter)r who is with her was in the background most of the time, was a musical genius. He tried things that had never been tried (musically)

This is one of my favorite songs. Karen was amazing. I remember being in the car as a very little girl (1972ish?) and her music being on the radio. It’s old but gold!! Love it!! Xoxoxo 👑

Old but Gold, that was her brother. When Karen died we were all in shock. Back in the day! She had a good voice. Our respect to you for liking our music back in the day. Joan and Keith Bates

I loooooove The Carpenters. Richard was a pioneer in the music industry with the whole layering technique they used here. And though it’s not in this song, you know your group is amazing when you basically have Herb Alpert on retainer for your trumpets 🤪

The carpenters was the first album I bought as a 12/13 year old on LP in the early 90’s. Love Rainy Days and Mondays, This Masquerade, We’ve only just begun and Where do I go from here. I remember convincing my friends in the last year of Primary school (must have been 11/12) to sing Top of the World as part of our end of year play to the rest of the school and parents. This was back when I thought I could sing, and had no shame about the fact I actually couldn’t 😂

Karen was a drummer first, she wanted it that way. But her voice was brilliant and her brother who was the force behind music writing and composition, put her in front singing. And that's history, she had an angels voice that could touch the human heart with expression. Her brother was the strength and much talent behind both of the Carpenters💜
