- My impressions of Episode Six of the new FX adaptation of James Clavell's classic historical drama Shōgun.
Lady Ochiba returns to Osaka in order to accelerate the Regents’ campaign against Toranaga. In Ajiro, Toranaga tests Mariko’s loyalty to his cause.
FX’s Shōgun, based on James Clavell’s bestselling novel, is set in Japan in the year 1600, at the dawn of a century-defining civil war. “Lord Yoshii Toranaga” (Hiroyuki Sanada) is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him, when a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village.
New Episodes are released every Tuesday on FX:

I thought the negotiation was stellar, even if Mariko did overpay a bit. The misconception that Toranaga was the client threw a fair-sized monkey wrench into the process. One thing that really bugged me was Toranaga's initiation of mass cheers. I bet the crowd could barely hear him in the front, never mind the guys in the back. I felt almost zero enthusiasm coming from him every time he tried to fire people up. Toshiro Mifune did a far better job acting through those particular moments, at least to me. That Toda Hiromatsu didn't get killed by 'bandits' amazed me. His Plot Armor must be particularly robust!
The negotiations in the book were highly amusing, especially when someone regretted being bested.
I'm going to have to put on my pirate hat so I can watch this.
Well worth it mate so far.
Where this show is falling apart is that Mariko and Blackthorn have zero chemistry. I've been rewatching thing the original, and Yoko Shimada and Chamberlain have great chemistry ( even though Chamberlain was gay IRL) their relationship and warmth help us become invested in their story.
Tbh I feel the 2024 version of Mariko is based on a real misunderstanding of the character - who was subtle and intelligent, and strong ( not in a girl boss way, but in always being composed and calm no matter how difficult the circumstances).
I think it's a weak point too, I'm not seeing this deep love between them. We are missing the long secret conversations between them which built so much of that up.
