  • My impressions of Episode Seven of the new FX adaptation of James Clavell's classic historical drama Shōgun.
Outplayed by new alliances in Osaka, Toranaga is forced to carve out a new deal with a long lost family member.
FX’s Shōgun, based on James Clavell’s bestselling novel, is set in Japan in the year 1600, at the dawn of a century-defining civil war. “Lord Yoshii Toranaga” (Hiroyuki Sanada) is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him, when a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village.

This episode disappointed m a bit. Blackthorne was shifted to the role of side character as you commented. What really burned me was the beach scene with Yabu. As observant and as quick a study as he is shown to be, we're supposed to believe he doesn't know katanas are two-handed weapons? Really? He's been toting those blades for a good while and never bothered to even try learning to use them? Please...

He would be handy with a cutlass, as he was a privateer. There's a log book full of his attacks on Portuguese shipping, no doubt he took a hand in a few battles. Life was very hard for sailors of that era, Blackthorn ( in the book and 1980 series) is much tougher than this.

Indeed, they have, for possibly current day reasons, sidelined Blackthorne and made him somewhat feeble.

I've been enjoying this series very much, but while watching this episode last night, I had the thought that not a lot of action has happened yet. I mean, sword fighting or battles. It has been enjoyable to watch, but by episode 7, more action should have happened imo. But to be clear, I've never read the novel.

There have been a lot of omissions, and I suspect for cost reasons, a substantial portion has been based in the BC filming location standing in for Anjiro. So it has become too static. Hopefully this will have to change for the last three episodes as they travel to Oaska.

I can see how folks who are unfamiliar with Shogun could enjoy this. But,
as someone who loved the book and the 1980 series, this show is hard to watch. Mariko and Blackthorn 's characters are all wrong: he's a joke and she's cold and sulky. The chemistry between them is negligible.
Key scenes have been removed, in which Blackthorn proves himself smart and brave, and Mariko reveals her real strength.
Naga's death was a complete joke, I wonder how far off script they will go? First 3 episodes were great but it's been steadily declining since. The only good scene in this ep was between Toranaga and the Madam.

I'm increasingly agreeing on this, Blackthorne has been sidelined and since the escape from Osaka at sea he's not been allowed much bravery and agency. And after an OK start they have stalled his relationship with Mariko. They are supposed to have this deep, secret love but there is no indication of it on screen. Could be modernitis has finally bit.
