I backed the Elk for a couple of years back in the 60s along with Ian McLagen, Boz Burrell and Rocky Browne, it seems so long ago. We are exactly the same age.
By far one of the best singers this country has ever had, such a shame she never had good management to look after her and give her the reward she deserved for all the years of hard work.
I saw her at Durham with my wife and can say it was an experience as long as I live I will never forget and only saddened I didn't have my mum with me. She came on stage with a bit of meet and greet type session and we were only there as when we were kids we remembered our mum's dancing around the kitchen to her tunes, did we get a shock, when she kicked off with the tunes we remembered as kids the atmosphere rose up up and with every word she got younger as did we. Her voice was amazing and although we were close we were still about 4 rows back you could hear her take in breath to hit high notes it was unbelievable, I don't know if it would be an insult to call her a professional as I don't believe what she does on stage you can learn like a job, it was pure talent. By the time she walked off stage she was a much younger lady than she appeared and sexy with it I may add although the same age as my mum plus we were in a building like a cinema and the audience were rocking so much in the seats you could feel the framework moving to the point I would question if the raw bolts holding it down was giving way. If you get the opportunity to see the lady herself and don't go I would say you have been robbed of a life experience of your own doing, the show is the whole deal including the audience (her followers) I can't honestly explain, it felt like kind of a personal experience like she was singing just for us but the audience was so fired up it made it even better and without knowing it played there part in a great night out Go and see her if she is in your area you won't regret it
Sorry, Elkie may be good, but there is no way on this earth that you could ever compare her with Barbara Streisand!! Has Elkie ever done musicals for a start. Different leagues!
