Beautiful and heartwarming to see that this is your choice for an early episode. To the Suleiman's...may God bless you for your empathy. To the Ofili's you are such a beacon of light, thank u for sharing your journey with us.
My honest perspective (as an Early Intervention Specialist practicing in Nigeria for 10 years)on Special needs parenting in Nigeria...We have a mighty long way to go, and that's a huge understatement.
Whether owing to a diagnosis of Cerebral Palsy, Autism, Spina bifida, ADHD Dyslexia or Downs Syndrome, the trials and trauma these children go through even within their own nuclear families is unimaginable. Let's not even begin to dig into the mental health crisis mother's raising them have to go through or the financial implications on these families. From school to church, family gatherings to public space. The Nigerian environment exploits an already bleeding situation.
Inlaws blame it on poor parenting, marriages suffer damage and split up, Spouses suspect eachother for cheating and 'evil genetic traits', children are neglected, mistreated , abandoned and termed 'mental'. Worse still, even educated families still act confused following a diagnosis from the fear of stigmatisation.
My most shocking experiences have been from parents in the East...and even in Abuja! I believe podcasts like this ... Selected topics with respected and empathetic couples that walk this road will go a long way in enlightening the Nigerian public and saying Special needs kids are not possessed, demonised, from the 'gods', a curse, badluck, evil, or God's expression of wrath for a missed vigil or an IVF treatment.
And no, 'mercy killing' is not an option either.

My brother was on a spectrum even though I did not get to know what exactly. We lost him last year..We were close and even though he could not really talk, he had a name for me(aiii) and could call mummy.
I still cried this week..I miss him so much
Cheers to the couple for coming out here to enlighten people, I love your son already.
Well, I interpret to the hearing impaired and really love to be in their midst.

In my experience working with teenagers on the spectrum, you realise very quickly that no two autistic children are the same. They’re just like the atypical child, might have similar characteristics but each have a distinct personality and it reflects in their behaviour. The hardest part was understanding each individual’s needs and communication style, once you get that right, it gets easier to help and support them to be the best version of themselves. I totally loved working with my learners and I miss them all🌈

I truly understand. I have my doctorate as a PMHNP, diagnose and treat children daily. But when it came to my daughter, I too was in denial. I had this gutt feeling, but she started reading at 1.5 years of age. She was able to read but her language was not as clear as other 3 y.o. I googled and took an online assessment, and it was advised to take her to see a pediatrician. A few days later, a doctor who was visiting Dallas was swimming at the community pool when he saw me with my children. We started a conversation, and he asked me at what age was my daughter diagnosed. I asked him diagnosed with what? The man turned red before me and he said please take her to the doctor, she is on the spectrum. My husband and I cried and a week later, at the age of 3, she was officially diagnosed. She started an early education program for special needs children. She is now 9 y.o. and we can't keep her quiet 😂She has some delays with math, but she is doing great. She is now in the 4th grade, but is in regular classes. She has tons of friends and is pretty honest with her friends about her ASD diagnosis. She is technology savvy to the point that it's scary since there are so many weirdos online, but we are teaching her about how to use the internet safely. I too believe having an older sister helped, because she had someone to communicate with. These children are extremely intelligent!!!! Thank you for sharing your story, I know it will help others. EARLY INTERVENTION WAS THE KEY!!!!

A lot of parents are in denial, refusing to admit. I am a Special Need Educator and I always advice an early check up routine and continous monitoring when they are growing.
Nigeria and Nigerian need to accept the special needs.

Well done to the " ofilis". They have done a good job. The Nigeria community is yet to be well prepared for children with special needs. We have a long way to go. We are yet to breakthrough with even infectious diseases in children. Diagnosing autism is quite delicate and needs lots of confirmation as it is a multidisciplinary team approach. Well done Ibrahim and Linda. Such a lovely program
