This episode reminds me so much of how my younger sister grew up with Sickle Cell Anaemia. She is in her Mid 20s now and she is handling it well. We are really grateful for what God done with her. Raising a sickle cell child is a lot for struggling families.

I thought I knew Segilola from some where 😮😮😅😅😅😅 It’s from TMC. Louise’s wife 🎉 Never in my wildest imagination would I have thought she’s a sickle cell warrior 😢.
A BRAVE WARRIOR at that that. Kuddos to her and other warriors out there.

I remember some episodes of TMC when I noticed some jaundice in Segilola and I was like 🤔🤔. As a Dr living with sickle cell, I wish I could share this episode everywhere-What Segilola said about the difference in the UK and Nigeria is so true. There’s a lot of stigma and negativity that literally translates into multiple crises like Segilola said especially with the ‘sickler’ term. I can’t wait for the part B. Sending plenty love to the Ogidans and plenty appreciation to the Suleimans for such a beautiful episode. God bless you both ❤

Ever since I stumbled on DPP, I've been glued 💯 and now this, I love it being a warrior myself ❤
Can relate with this first time shocker people get when they're aware of your sickle cell status.
The "sickler" term is very restrictive (like she said words are powerful) hence why we advocate champion for the term "warriors" even if at all you want to categorize.
At this time and age no adult should believe the genotype given at birth or said by parents. Have your genotype checked at multiple standard labs, you can even specifically request Hb Electrophoresis which is more accurate. Peace of mind is a better option every time.
I can't blame warriors who don't reveal their sickle cell status, coz you need to work twice as every other person to prove you're just as capable as much.
I'm so glad for the Ogidan's coz it's not every time you see at risk couples (couples with a high possibility of birthing a child with sickle cell) being this intentional about their warrior navigating life at it best.
29:06 Honestly said, Idara couldn't have gotten better parents than you guys, especially with Segi's firsthand info on sickle cell.
33:27 like my hematologist will say, there's nothing you can't do even as a warrior just tweak it to suit you. Wanna have chilled drinks, take it during the hot weather.
35:52 the water break for everyone 😂😂 my mum does this for my younger brother so he doesn't feel overwhelmed and left alone from constantly being reminded to be hydrated.
39:43 yeah the first sign of sickle cell in children is swollen hand and feet syndrome "dactylitis" majorly at 6months. So basically the science behind is that babies have fetal hemoglobin which is a much better at binding to oxygen and delivering it to the rest of the body. But at 6 months there's a switch where the fetal hemoglobin is no longer produced and the adult hemoglobin(which in the case of a child with sickle cell is the sickle hemoglobin) becomes produced. So the curved shape of the sickle red blood cells makes it blood the tiny vessels in their hands and feet, making it swollen. It's really painful especially for babies that can't even express what they're going through.
Can't wait to watch the next episode ❤

Listened to this on audio and rushed here. It really dawned on me that God’s way is really not our way and sometimes it seems like he disappointed us but he did exactly what we needed. He always knew he was AA, she wanted the status to stop with her and would have ended things if she knew he was AS. They didn’t find out till she was pregnant and I believe that was God working so that she won’t lose the man and family that was right for her. She may have found her AA man but he may not have been empathetic or quarter as caring and loving as her partner is.. The more questions you asked them, the more it showed how NORMAL their baby boy is and how calm they’ve had it. Lovee your podcast

Very informative episode. I just want to add that sickle cell is a result of genetic mutation due to malaria. Hence it is prevalent in areas where malaria is prevalent. So it is indirectly due to geography. I just thought to add that, so we don’t think there’s something wrong with us Africans. 😂
