      hey tom richey you did not mention HAITI did you forget Haiti role

    Well it is clearly not mentioned that the reason Napoleon made the deal is because Haiti's revolutionaries were kicking his ass all over the place. So thank you Haiti for facilitating the doubling of USA's size for little cost.

      Edward Schmalz Awesome! I made this one two years ago and the bad sound and lighting make me cringe... but hey, if it still gets the point across content-wise, I'm glad even my old stuff can still help people!

      THANKS! This video is an oldie and I cringe when I watch these, so it's really gratifying when someone tells me that these old videos are still helping. One day, I plan to re-record these so Jefferson will have the lectures he deserves.

    concerning the point 0:20, I actually read that Spain ceded the territory to Napoleon’s France in 1800 -not 1803- and finally in 1803 it volunteered to sell the entire Louisiana territory to the United States. any help here?

  • @alfonsoterrero1251

    Napoleon sold this big chunk of land because he had lost his richest colony, haiti, to the slave revolution. You could say he was broke and had lost some of his best troops during the war down in haiti. The haitians went on to support the new nations of latin america that were fighting for indepence from the others colonial powers, mainly spain. So this little nation of xlaves caused some of the greatest changes inhuman history, and lets not forget that the industrial revolution that followed these events, was financed by the wealth created by the slaves in the old colonies. Have a nice day.

    How did Louisiana become so small?

  • @negrobob8162
    @negrobob8162 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Please adjust the money for inflation. 15 million in 1803 Is a much different amount than today's dollars. Adjusted its 300 million in today's money. 60 cents an acre. Still a great deal.

    A piece of context: France was engulfed in what is known as the Nopoleonic wars and needed all its resources back home. Louisiana was more of a burden that anything else and nearly no frenchmen lived there except in New-Orleans and St. Louis; that's it.

      It was worthless because of the haitian revolution. Haiti makes Bonaparte sal the land . They never want to give any value to any black acheivement.
      Go back to history to find out what had happened and why Napoleon Bonaparte was obligated to sell Louisiana to Thomas Jefferson

  • @MrJoeybabe25

    The United States bought the "preemptive" right to obtain "Indian" lands by treaty or by conquest, to the exclusion of other colonial powers.
    We had ourselves the Imperial Rights to Louisiana. We had to scatter and remove the people who already lived there, foisting American imperialism to gain control of the area.
    Good bargain? Sure? The right thing to do? I'd say no. At the least we should teach the whole story of the "purchase" rather than "look at this as a great fire sale we took advantage of".
    We should be able to look back on our founding fathers with more than the great deals they got.

    the french were not that intelligent and said the land was worthless. in 20 to 40 years these lands would be used for oil, farms, and water supply.

    • @mss3346
      @mss3346 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maluhia808 In 1719, John Law decided to offer prisoners in Paris something they could not refuse. He offered them their freedom as long as they were willing to marry a prostitute and head off to Louisiana.
      No that stupid😂
