Im not sure if someone already told you this but Johnny Cash has been inducted into the Rock and Roll, County and Gospel Halls of fame. Yes all 3. Legend for real
True, he was jailed a few times overnight and actually once for trespassing and picking flowers . Good thing we got the law enforcers to keep these dangerous people off the street. LOL. Haggard actually was in the joint for 2 years. San Quentin for attempted burglary.
Check out merle Haggard, he was at Folsom prison as a inmate and saw this performance. So when he got out, he wrote songs and actually became the only true outlaw country music star
John's first prison concert was at San Quentin. He struggled hard with his record company to let him do that. This show is also on record. The original album is titled "At San Quentin". One of the inmates in the audience was the great Merle Haggard...later to become one of country music's greatest performers and a legend.
@Dag R. Johnson: Wrong! Johnny Cash's first prison concert album was "Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison" ( 1968; ) followed, a year later, by "Johnny Cash at San Quentin" ( 1969. )
@@dagr.johnsen2164 Wrong again! Johnny Cash did indeed inspire Merle Haggard, but - I never said he did so in 1969. Johnny Cash had been doing concerts ( ? - maybe benefit concerts ) at various prisons for many years BEFORE his big break in getting one recorded for an album ( which was 1968's "Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison." ) One of those earlier concerts was at San Quentin, where Merle Haggard was serving time at that time. So, yeah - that would have been around 1958, or maybe 1959 ( because Merle Haggard was released from prison in 1960, according to the bio. info. about him. )
Some of his songs were written while on drugs and after his arrest for narcotics. No record labels wanted to touch him because of his addiction, but he recorded a record live at folsom prison singing these songs for inmates.
Aw...I just love that you enjoyed a whole week listening to this one-of-a-kind legend! You actually pay attention to the songs, and your opinions are genuine. Great reactor!

Great reaction! I really enjoy how you dive into the artist/ bands catalog and see what they have to offer. Please please please do a week of The Eagles!
Johnny was a wild one when he was young but,, these are just stories he wrote. He did go through drug addiction, alcoholism and fooling around when he first got famous. In the end he married his soulmate, June Carter. He got straight and went back to the religion of his youth. The 2nd half of his life was peaceful but he never looked down on anyone
He never did any prison time. He just had a heart for prisoners and wrote songs from their point of view. He was arrested and went to jail for public drunk a couple times I think. He played concerts in prison though and felt bad for them. The only real famous artist I know of that did that. You should read his book. Man in black. He did have a drug problem.
@@leostawicki7283 definitely know that, but NiN signed over all rights to the song to Mr. Cash because he covered it so well. Even if NiN didn't do that, not all songs that he reacts to are originals, or need to be. Covers are reacted to all the time.
@justinsane1995 It's a tangled web. The song by Woody Guthrie in 1944 must have been "Little Sadie", because " Cocaine blues " was supposedly written in 1947 by Roy Hogshead and also by Red Arnall in 1947. Roy Hogshed and the Rainbow Riders recorded it on May 25, 1947 at Universal Recorders in Hollywood , and charted at #15 in 1948. W.A Nichols and the Western Aces recorded and released it in 1947 , with Red Arnall the lead singer. A confusing mess. Hogshed didn't write it in 1944 , my mistake.
While on tour that year, he was arrested October 4 in El Paso, Texas, by a narcotics squad. The officers suspected he was smuggling heroin from Mexico, but found instead 688 Dexedrine capsules (amphetamines) and 475 Equanil (sedatives or tranquilizers) tablets that the singer had hidden inside his guitar case.
1. Jackson ft. June Carter (folsom prison version) 2. Stripes 3. Boy Named Sue 4. I've Been Everywhere 5. Daddy dang bass 6. Big River 7. The Highway Man
You need another week of Johnny Cash. Too many good songs still to hear. As we've said, he empathized with convicts and did many concerts in prisons around the country, as well as performing a number of songs that the prisoners could relate to like this one.
Recorded live at Folsom Prison. He cursed some but on the original album it was beeped out. Wasn't allowed to curse on records back then. Among other things... he said... "you can't say *beep*, *beep*, *beep* or *beep*!!! How's THAT grab you Bob?? 😎" I believe Bob was Bob Fergusson, a famed producer and in charge of recording this concert. Please correct me if I'm wrong about this Bob. Edit : Love your reaction! 👍 Another PS : His voice is raspy and hoarse because he was still on amphetamines then.
LOL Sunday Morning Coming Down is a lot closer to his real life. Johnny Cash did got to jail once or twice for substance abuse issues, but he was never actually in prison. Unless it was for a concert...
Johnny has a lot of songs he sang about prison or specifically Folsom. BUT!!!! He wasn’t in Folsom. He gave a concert which was recorded live at Folsom that was for the prisoners.
Definitely need a Johnny Cash week 2 for Boy Named Sue, Man In Black, and Jackson! For some other country artists to react to try Loretta Lynn, Shania Twain, Reba McEntire, Miranda Lambert, and Trisha Yearwood. I can suggest songs for each one but that'd be a novel length comment lol (They could probably each have their own week(s)).
You should take some time to check out Merle Haggard, Johnny inspired him to become a country music artist after Merle saw one Johnny's shows he did in the prison Merle was locked up in. The best song to start off with of his would be Mamma Tried
Cash sung at Folsom for the men that was locked up. That's why you hear cheering in the back ground. Play men in black to find out what Cash was about..
Only time Johnny Cash did in Folsom was to entertain to prisoners , he found some great song wright's one was the legendary Merl Haggard as a young man I watched the Johnny Cash show every Wednesday night. Went to see his concert at Palm Beach Florida he had special guests Merl Haggard fresh out of prison, sing Fighting Side of me. 67 and still love hearing his music. Thanks
He was NEVER in prison. His songs give people to believe such but,... no never did NO, NO, Folsom prison is where he performed to the inmates. The train song is just a song. He did say he may have done something that should have put him in jail but never did. However Merle Haggard did.

He sang this in Folsom Prison. They loved it. Lol
When people were criticizing gangsta rappers in the 90s, Johnny Cash said that the rappers need to tell their story how they see fit.

Merle Haggard served time at San Quentin
He is a great story teller. You need a second week. Need to do “A boy named Sue”.
I so agree. Written just before the show. It is hillarious. Also first performed at Folsom.
Love your reactions...LOL.....Johnny Cash loved westerns...stories...he was very creative. He was on a few western movies.

He was never incarcerated in prison.
This song was originally called Transfusion Blues and is much older than this.
The meaning and lyrics are about the same.
If you wanna hear Johnny curse again, "A Boy Named Sue" will give you that.
The character in Folsom “shot a man just to watch him die” to end up in prison.
