Johnny was a great storyteller. The inmates loved him not only because he did a show for them, but he was relatable. He had been to some of the same dark places and fought some of the same demons; he was a star but never treated people as inferior.

What is great about that recording is that was recorded in Folsom prison, at the end you hear the prison guard call out the inmates numbers that had visitors. The reason he kept saying 'hack' in this song was because it was a slang word for a dirty prison guard. It was his way of digging at the guards for the inmates. He figured they couldn't punish him for saying it, while showing the men he was with them.

Listening to my folks' vinyl copy of "At Folsom Prison" as a little white dude, I had already heard the most gangsta thing I ever heard a decade before NWA or Geto Boys.
My stepdad would always take me to the car shows in town, up in California and Oregon. I was about 6 when I realized that when it started to get dark.... The beer started flowing, and you couldn't walk past 5 cars without hearing Johnny Cash! People be laughing, and hollarin and bullshittin... I realized when early that "The Man in Black" was cool 🤙🤙🇺🇸
He's singing to convicts back in the 60s at Folsom Prison. You can hear them "screaming" in the background. Far as I know, it's not usual for a band to come play a concert at a prison. But Johnny got big time famous for that. He wears black in memory of all the ones in jail. He had an album or song called Folsom Prison Blues.
He sang that song during one of his prison shows, probably Folsom Prison. The warden didn't want him to sing the song because he thought it might invite a riot. Cash played it anyway & as you could hear, the audience of prisoners loved it.
Great song, I love Johnny Cash. I think this one is recorded at Folsom Prison. You should check out the live recording of Folsom Prison Blues filmed there. Pretty iconic. Although my very favourite JC song is Girl From The North Country a duet with Bob Dylan ⚡️
