There are a bunch of pattern packets that are JUST a variety of sleeves - if you do decide to do a deep dive into set-in sleeves, one of those would be an excellent guide!
Lol I have one of them which I picked up back the 80’s could not find when we hit the 90’s so bought another one which had some different sleeves , moved house a dozen times in the 00’s everting is now packed in storage because I had to move back home to help Dad look after Mom(not easy to merge two homes into one) yep had to finally had to buy yet a 3rd copy of mixed sleeves which it had more sleeves than the last two have and a few more styles 😹😹😹only this year, have no idea which of my boxes hold what and they are mixed in with Mom’s as she too never got to unpack totally from moving house before she got sick. Now it’s only Dad and myself and we just build a workshop to house all the boxes, we really need to get in there and go through them all🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
Remember, seams can always turn into style lines 👋 Or, if have 1 seam is bad, more is better. 1 seam equals a mistake, many seams equals style choice opportunities 😂
This was a really fun video to watch. I don’t sew very much with knits - except to make tiny teddy bears for my primary grades students. I have been sewing since I was a very young child - age 7, and that gives me 58 years of experience. Here is the best hack, or trick, for you to sew a garment with set-in sleeves. Stitch the shoulder seam together. Then add the sleeves to the bodice. Then stitch the arm sleeve. I usually do it in 2 stages, so the actual underarm get a reinforcement. Pin the sides together, matching the seams on the sleeve to bodice together. Start about 3-4 “ from the joint of the sleeve and bodice. Stitch up the sleeve, and then all the way down to the hem line. Turn the garment. Begin again about 3-4” from the joint seams, and stitch up the bodice side, then all the way down to the sleeve hem. It is MUCH easier to sew that way, than to sew the sleeve closed and side closed, and then set the sleeve into the garment I make about 70-75% of all my clothes. You are doing really well. Sewing is a lost art for many people, so I am really happy to see a young person choose to do their own clothes. Keep it up.
I always understood that the difference between Dolman and batwing is that a batwing starts close to the waist with much more flappydowaddle wing and Dolemans are closer fitting to the arm pit.
Close...a Dolman sleeve is often confused with a cap or bat sleeve. Dolman refers to the structure of the sleeve, and in this video, I saw no Dolmans being constructed.

A Dolman sleeve is a constructed, joint-fitting sleeve, that has a shoulder section, not merely an extension of the main sloper body. In common usage now, Dolman usually means batwing, or self-sleeve. I found only one ad for a blouse that has a true Dolman sleeve... Nordstrom, Dolman Sleeve Silk Top in color cinnamon stick. For a sewer working up to set-in sleeves, raglan sleeves are a good introduction. They are great with woven fabrics, and skip all the tricky parts of a set-in sleeve. There's no shoulder seam, and they are great with a variety of prints/solids.
For the panel dress you can always add some type of patch pocket. They are cute and work. Plus they will be super easy to add. As for the last dress (hospital gown) you can add a small spaghetti strap to help keep it up. It is also light enough you can buy a blue dye to help the color fell less hospital like. Both very easy fixes to bring this to a higher rating.
I believe it was Madonnas’ fishnet top over tank that is what they are referencing in the article. Then there was a off the shoulder top movement with the sleeve.
Setting in sleeves is a bit tricky, but if you make "puffy sleeves" with deliberate gathers at the shoulder, it's way easier. Just my take on the sleeve debate 😊
I love watching you explore new machines. I am so lucky to be a part of a fiber artist group full of wonderful ladies who knit, crochet, sew, and spin. One of our ladies brings her spinning wheel to meetings, and is happy to teach us how to use it. It's a thing I will learn, eventually.
Your store bought red shirt could be fixed to not cut off circulation by just removing the cuff and roll hemming the sleeves. Or adding a contrasting bias binding of a similar weight fabric.
Omg dress 9 is so cute! Pockets could honestly be installed without much difficulty. You could add some black patch pockets on top of the black side panels. If you made them rectangles, you'd just have to hem the top edge and fold under the side and bottom edges. It'd be super quick and easy to install! Striped pockets there could also be really cute! Or maybe a kangaroo pocket on the front? If you did black, you wouldn't have to worry about matching the stripes, and you'd only have to hem the two sloped openings, folding under the top, bottom, and lower sides.
I don’t like sleeves either but a very easy way to do it is leave the side seam open. Find the middle of the sleeve cap it matches your shoulder seam match your notches(very important) to have the correct notches so you know front from back. Ease the material around the circle. Sew then sew up the side seams and your done!!!! I also hem the sleeve before I sew up the side seams Everything is much easier when your sewing on a flat service instead of a circle. Good luck. You can google or watch you-tube videos to see how this is done but it’s so much easier. Key is matching notches!!!!!
I taught myself to sew many many years ago & this is exactly the way of doing sleeves that I came up with. However, I took a sewing class later & was told by the scandalized teacher that it’s lazy and wrong. I didn’t take it personally, did it her way for the course & then continued to do it my way at home 😅
I was actually taught to sew in sleeves this way by a theater costume maker, and also told it was wrong by a paid sewist. Too bad, it's so much easier, I guess I'll just be sewing wrong. 😂
I know it sounds crazy but i usually use my flat iron i use On my hair for seams also i have seam rollers originally intended for leather i keep in my portable sewing kits… keep in mind, i use the lowest setting on the flat iron and I don’t have to worry about residue transferring to the fabric bc i have seriously sensitive skin and dont use hardly any hair products for that reason lol

My favourite is the blue dress with the blue and white stripes - I'm a sucker for that combo. The idea of the black dress is really cool! Just - such an odd fabric.

Fellow winging it fabric hoarder here. Jersey fiend too. I don’t get the knit hate. It really isn't hard to sew with. Top tip...triple stretch straight stitch...the one that looks like three equal vertical lines on an old machine. When I discovered it....OMG. I know it's lovely, buying lots of pretty and slinky soft swoosh (a.k.a gorgeous yards of potential) but you have to spend some money on tools. I used to be all "why bother" too but these small simple tools are very cheap and you end up wondering how you did without them. It really saves you time and stops your brain melting in the search for that'll-dos. A bodkin for threading elastic/cord, not a safety pin. A.k.a elastic threading tool. Wonder clips, (or the Chinese ebay knockoffs which are dirt cheap and actually better), not pins. They take a little getting used to because they weigh the edge down a bit and can catch on your base plate edge if you forget to take them off at the right moment but my word is it worth it to do away with pin holes and associated ladders in your jersey knit. I freaking hate pins. A white eyeliner pencil to mark up dark fabric that you're going to wash, it's way easier than anything chalk on tricky stretchy or slippery fabrics.

I’m same way, I have yet to knit a top with sleeves lol I unknowingly did batwing sleeves for the tops I made, couldn’t tell directions because I did them on the fly and by eye but hey, they are the most comfy knit tops I have ever worn.

Usually with a knit or stretchy fabric If wanting to utilise the stretch u need to use a zig zag if using a straight stitch it limits stretch and the seams can pop due to stretching it to put it on
I'm learning from you to try, even while I"m second guessing *everything* I do, and to accept how things turn out. I've started on a pair of split-side pants, and the first pocket is a bit wonky but I've left it as-is and just improved my technique on the second pocket :) I'm still hesitant to actually cut the legs to length and width, because I'm scared to make them too small, haha. Hopefully tomorrow I"ll commit!
My two favorites are this one 24:52 and this one 25:01 i have the perfect silky fabric for doing a tunic/shirt version of my second favorite one to wear over a skirt or a pair of jeans lol

30:35 put a pouch style pocket like on hoodies but Hidden underneath with the openings where the striped fabric meets the solid fabric… this way you only have to unpick a very small amount Of seamwork plus less work overall to add pocketing
26:59 tuck it into a skirt for wearing out of the house but loosely so that it billows slightly at the bust lol best to do this with a high-waisted skirt lol

Apparently, my method for doing set-in sleeves is incorrect. I’ve always done them in flat: sew front & back of bodice together, match notches on sleeve to bodice, stitch in flat, sew side seams. Works for me & has yet to not work. 🤷🏽♀️ I’ve done both short & long sleeves this way.
I turned 18 in 1984 and I do remember having clothes with that wings but I don’t remember Madonna wearing dolman sleeves/bat wings. I remember the pointy bra and a leather jacket and yeah Madonna was iconic. I do not remember batwing sleeves being iconic because of her but I had a lot of other things to keep me busy back then. Also, I am built for comfort not style and that hasn’t changed since I was about five.
Adding pockets to the Stripe/Solid panel dress would be super easy, just cut out 2 (pick whatever shape you want, I am going with square for sake of argument) and then choose your placement, your fabric, hem before putting it on then just top stitch it. DONE! Nice work! I think I would rate them about the same as you. I might just have to challenge myself to do some of these for winter shirts. Just would it translate well to a heavy knit sweatshirt material, is the grand Q?
I think it would - as long as there's a decent amount of stretch to the material, it works great! And some giant comfy dolman sleeve sweatshirts would be amazing for winter!

i love this video already. i am literally in the same position. i've been hacking away at a sleeve pattern, but it's hell on earth, so i might as well make a bunch of shirts with dolman sleeves lol.
Watching your videos has given me motivation to start drafting my first capsule wardrobe! Unfortunately, I don't have the money right now to start actually sewing even though I have plenty of free time 😅

Usually with a knit or stretchy fabric If wanting to utilise the stretch u need to use a zig zag if using a straight stitch it limits stretch and the seams can pop due to stretching it to put it on

I'm learning from you to try, even while I"m second guessing *everything* I do, and to accept how things turn out. I've started on a pair of split-side pants, and the first pocket is a bit wonky but I've left it as-is and just improved my technique on the second pocket :)
I'm still hesitant to actually cut the legs to length and width, because I'm scared to make them too small, haha. Hopefully tomorrow I"ll commit!
Grown on sleeves are so much for comfortable as well as easier to sew. I use woven non stretch fabric and if you use enough fabric then they are fine.
I really like the maxi dress, I’m going to try that one once I find some knit fabric.
My two favorites are this one 24:52 and this one 25:01 i have the perfect silky fabric for doing a tunic/shirt version of my second favorite one to wear over a skirt or a pair of jeans lol
I never thought of Dolman sleeves as batwing. I've made a dress or two with Dolman sleeves, but they were not as draping as what I think of as batwing...learn something everyday😊
This video really makes me want to dig out my vintage (70's? 80's?) dolman sleeved blouse pattern and give it a go. But for some reason I am terrified of dolman sleeves and I'd sew a dozen in-set sleeves first event tough I hate it

When I looked it up, there was a company that made bat wing sleeve jackets and sweatshirts in the 1980's. The company name was Madonna.
30:35 put a pouch style pocket like on hoodies but
Hidden underneath with the openings where the striped fabric meets the solid fabric… this way you only have to unpick a very small amount
Of seamwork plus less work overall to add pocketing

26:59 tuck it into a skirt for wearing out of the house but loosely so that it billows slightly at the bust lol best to do this with a high-waisted skirt lol

For me, the raglan style sleeve is the most comfortable and easiest to sew.
Not sure if anyone else has mentioned this, or if you have found this out already - I recently saw some hints which included spray starch to stop knits rolling at the edge.
I think you could save the last dress with a "strap" across the back shoulder to keep it higher and more practicle

On number 10 dress, I wonder if you added a "seam" down the center of the back. Starting narrow at the waistline and increasing to 2"-3" at the neckline. I do love the idea of this dress.

Watch for directional stretch. You want the biggest stretch to go around your body. That is my guess for what happened with the black fabric.

It is called a set in sleeve. If you can sew in cuffs you can put in a regular shirt sleeve. Everything you made is cute.
Have you considered cutting off the cuffs on the red shirt that you otherwise love?

Apparently, my method for doing set-in sleeves is incorrect. I’ve always done them in flat: sew front & back of bodice together, match notches on sleeve to bodice, stitch in flat, sew side seams. Works for me & has yet to not work. 🤷🏽♀️ I’ve done both short & long sleeves this way.

I turned 18 in 1984 and I do remember having clothes with that wings but I don’t remember Madonna wearing dolman sleeves/bat wings. I remember the pointy bra and a leather jacket and yeah Madonna was iconic. I do not remember batwing sleeves being iconic because of her but I had a lot of other things to keep me busy back then. Also, I am built for comfort not style and that hasn’t changed since I was about five.
Spray starch and iron Work to flatten out those rolls. You don't have to starch the whole thing just the edges.
# 3 resembles the 80's
Adding pockets to the Stripe/Solid panel dress would be super easy, just cut out 2 (pick whatever shape you want, I am going with square for sake of argument) and then choose your placement, your fabric, hem before putting it on then just top stitch it. DONE! Nice work! I think I would rate them about the same as you. I might just have to challenge myself to do some of these for winter shirts. Just would it translate well to a heavy knit sweatshirt material, is the grand Q?
I think it would - as long as there's a decent amount of stretch to the material, it works great! And some giant comfy dolman sleeve sweatshirts would be amazing for winter!
