I'm in my 40s and I grew up in a high control religious group with very rigid expectations on women. For a lot of my life I just thought I was super weird. I got out of the cult, and I got diagnosed with ADHD. Then I found TH-cam. It turns out I'm not as weird as I thought I was. My husband calls me a quirky girl, and he calls the young ladies I follow on TH-cam (Charlie, Rachel Maksy, Morgan Donner, etc), MY quirky girls. Videos like this make me feel so much less alone in my eccentricities. It's a joy to see the inner workings of Charlie's neurodivergent brain. Much love to anyone else who was made to feel like they were simultaneously too much and not enough, and to anyone else who felt they had to make themselves smaller to be accepted. ❤ We are enough. I'm so grateful for my husband who has always found my "too much" to be perfectly enough.

Bless you! There is nothing wrong with being different! Much like your quirky girls, I am the same, I am not necessarily what people would call conventional, I also have adhd and my brain works at a thousand different ways in a second. I used to hide my quirkiness until recently when I finally thought life is short, as am I. I won't be in my 40's forever, so let's embrace myself and what I am and those weird thoughts that make me, me!!

Also for removing blood, your own spit contains enzymes that will break down the proteins. Possibly (and understandably) off-putting to some, but super effective in a pinch!!

@@odessawellington3388Sorry to nitpick, but to the best of my memory, this is incorrect; saliva contains amylase to start breaking down carbohydrates, but iirc proteases and lipases don't show up until farther along in the digestive tract.

I shall now recall the great sewing injury of the summer of 2022.
I was at my machine, working an item that I no longer recall. My left index finger got a little too close guiding the fabric, and the needle went through my nail bed, and poked out the other side of my finger.
"Ouch!" I politely acknowledged with my children around me. Upon further examination of my finger, there was black thread hanging out of my nail bed. I tried to tug it, but nope, it was in there good and firm.
"Right kids, let's get your shoes on, a drink and snack. We're off to a&e" (I live in the UK, dear reader).
With my finger sporting a fancy hair extension, I drove to hospital 5 miles away, children in tow.
After 4 hours of waiting patiently (excuse the pun), I got examined by the nurse, who was baffled by how i did this. An x Ray showed the tip of the needle, 1cm worth, had snapped off in the finger. The needle had hit the bone, and ricocheted off it, getting bent like an boomerang in the process.
A surgeon came to remove said boomerang needle tip, with 35ml of anaesthetic, and gas and air.
"Jesus christ that hurts" I said, and instantly apologised for blasphemy in the hospital (I'm british).
Nearly two years on, I can still see a faint black dot under my nail bed, and feel the dent where the surgeon cut into my finger to retrieve the offending needle.
I didn't touch my sewing machine again for two months.
And that concludes my sewing injury story. 😂

When I was four or five years old, I was made to take part in kindergarten plays. Once I was this Russian folklore character - the Snow Maiden, a young grandchild of Grandfather Frost. They put me in this horrible polyester outfit, which was very staticky. When it wasn't my lines I just sat there in my little chair, fiddling with the skirt to make it go zap and shoot tiny lightning. My parents had the whole thing on camera - some of my relatives laughed and called me stupid, the others were disgusted, scolded me and called what I was doing obscene. Swooshing the godawful skirt for it to go zap made them call me names!
So...yes, knowing you're neurodivergent helps as an adult a lot. At least now I realize that I wasn't some idiotic little monster I'm often portrayed to have been.

To be fair, blood on a pirate shirt seems pretty fitting actually.
My mother was a hobby-sewist when I was a kid and to be totally honest; not a very good one. Thankfully, she never sew many items for me specifically but I can still remember them vividly and how much I avoided wearing them. When I was little, my best friend's (at the time) mom was also a hobby sewist, but must more advanced than my mother was. I remember that they decided to make us girls each a dress at one point. My friend got this gorgeous princess gown with ruffles and whatnot and I was so jealous. The dress my mother made me was much more plain, but she decided to "spruce it up" by adding random pieces of lace to the front and to the trim.. I wore the dress exactly once and insisted on wearing my mother's cardigan over it the entire time because "I'm cold" (read: "I'm so embarassed and don't want anyone to see what I'm wearing").
Your story about the shorts and top-set really gave me flashbacks to that dress..

All of the blouses turned out pretty darned pretty!
sleeve tips I learned when drafting my own bodice blocks:
The reason for the off the shoulder look is pretty much because your armholes was not long enough verticaly, like a crotch seam we want the length before bothering with the curve. How deep or shallow the curve is in the bodice affects range of motion and the 'look' of the shirt.
All sleeve heads starts off as triangles. Top of triangle is where the shoulder line will be, the start of the arm seam is where where each diagonal leg meets the base.
The base is minimum the width of your bicep, maximum whatever the hell you want. The 'perfectly fitted' heigth of the triangle is the measurmens from the top of your shoulder over the shoulder curve and down the arm to widest part of the bicep. The important part is that we have enough fabric to fold over the shoulder curve. One side of this triangle we mark 'front' and the other 'back'.
For a non-puffed sleeve we want the each of the legs to match the measurment of the corresponding armhole. For a puffed sleeve the legs of the triangle can be whatever. Minimum bicep width and the 'perfectly fitted' length gives what I would call a straigthjacket fit in a woven fabric. We have to compromise between 'having range of motion' and 'spandex tigth fit'. A wide so called 'bicep' line and a shallow heigth is my prefered way of getting a comfy non-puffed sleeve cap.
Then it is curve guesstimation time. Every set of drafting instructions seem to do this bit differently. Though we aways want the curve on each side to measure at least a little longer than the measurment of the armhole half we will fit it into. Draw a convex curve going down from the top of the triangle over the leg, because there we could use the extra fabric to cover the shoulder. Concave curve under the leg at the ends of the triangle; because now we are under the arm and we do not need extra fabric to bunch in our armpits.
If the concave cuves matches up to curve of the bottom of the armhole we may give ourselves a gold star!

As a neurodivergent comrade (ADHD is my jam) with a profound discomfort around some items of clothings, I 100% vibe with your mood. I hate -not- having my arms covered, I dislike showing the back of my hands, I hate loose fitting clothing yet I'm uncomfortable showing my body in tight fitting clothes (solutions being : wearing something tight and wearing something big over it, like a large pants with tights or leggings underneath, like... well like a pant's petticoat I guess). Most of the things don't have any kind of explanation. Some do. I have very sun-sensitive skin so exposed arms usually means sunburns, even in winter, even INSIDE the house (I swear, once I got sunburn under my arms due to the sun's reflection on my grandma's old living room tiles). Others are just... well I don't know why I don't like that, but I don't.
Until some form of explanation got to me. Like, ADHD, like many other neurodivergences, have some sensitivity quirks to it. I'm overwhelmed by silence, by certain noises, certain lights. It's not that I dislike that, it's that these specifics noises or lights *hurt* me. And I guess it's the same with clothing. Skin sensitivity, touch sensitivity is very important too. Turns out I have dysproprioception, and tight clothing help a lot in regulating proprioception on the skin level. Zippers ? Well the metallic thing sometimes makes a bad noise, and also you sometimes lose control over it and it opens without notice. And since I won't sense it, I will definetely have problems on a more... social level, I guess.
And on the other end, I love ample, large outfits, because... well... the swhoosh. It's tingling my brain in all of the good places. It's soothing. I don't have an explanation about why it's soothing, but it is. My brain finds it fun and entertaining, and who am I to dispute my own brain ? It's very good at disrupting itself, I'm not going to cause anymore problems.
From time to time, I've come to often see myself as a triptych, there's me, my brain and my body. And if I like or don't like something, it's probably because my brain don't like it, or my body finds it icky. And... apparently, that's a sufficient explanation, because it has resolved my former inner turmoil about *why can't I stand that particular thing ?* and it's like **oh well my brain doesn't like it so I guess it's fine then.**
    Go figure...

It’s a shame that your world does not include buttons, even just for collecting (not so much for using on garments), because there are such beauties in my collection(s), and just like my beautiful fabric stash, I love to go over my buttons stash, admiring the pearlescent glow of nicre (mother of pearl), marvelling at the numbers of the matching sets, and trying to imagine where the antique buttons used to be used. There are some cute ones like a Christmas set with cookie cutters and gingerbread men, or hen and chicks, etc. I have been known to thrift something old just for the buttons. They are ridiculously expensive, so a whole set of really nice ones is like gold!
Thanks for sharing! Your blouse with the tie at the neck reminds me of the late 1970’s and early 80’s. There were so many patterns for gorgeous blouses similar to that, and once I made a similar one, a fabulous brilliant turquoise one with pouffy sleeves, buttons all down the back and lots of tucks in the shoulder seams and big shoulder pads of course. The problem we had then was shoulder-pad build-up when we tried to layer our garments.

I'm a little late on this video, but when you were talking about not having explanations for your dislikes, it reminded me when I was in middle school, I was on the basketball team and I was running late for practice. I had been talking with the Coach's wife, who was our english teacher about an assignment and I told Coach this as I was running in and getting ready. He was teasing me, but he said I always have an excuse for something. It surprised me because I wasn't trying excuse myself, I was just explaining what had happened and I was going to do the penalty runs for being late [we were doing conditioning for the season at this point in time]. It never occured to me before then that my explanations came off as excuses for why I shouldn't have consequences for my actions. Of course, there were times I explained to get out of something, I was a kid after all, but I wouldn't ever lie to my coach like that. I loved basketball. After that experience, I made sure to correct myself when I had to give context to a situation and then immediately say, "I'm not saying this as an excuse. I'm just saying what happened." And I never understood why anyone else never did this.
Well...I didn't understand until I was finally diagnosed with ADHD 12 years later.😅
It still befuddles me that people won't explain themselves when they say they hate something since i feel like I have to explain everything to make sure it doesn't come off as an excuse.

I completely understand about your hating of buttons. I have never liked them, and avoid them. Often I will remove them from clothing and replace them with different, more stable closures. There are a few notable exceptions. Some small, covered buttons on some formal wear, and the truly beautiful ones that can sometimes be found on cabled knit sweaters. Those are literally the only two. They can be useful as internal clothing fastener. But I hate them, and the look of them as a fashion element, and as functional closures. Always have. That said, there are some items of clothing I think they do work for, like a man' Henley Tee. But I don't wear those. I think your hubby is correct, you don't need to have reasoned explanations for not liking something. However, I somehow was always a target of ridicule for what I stated I didn't like, so I learned to analyze why. This has been a double-edged sword--it should not be needed for the application for which I developed it.

The discussion about needing a reason for stuff reminded me that I'm the exact opposite - If I or dislike a thing, I either have no reason or the reason is something I cannot articulate. And you brought to mine a memory of myself at about 8, with one of those school "get to know you" worksheets teachers seemed so fond of. The only question on the entire thing I remember is "what is your favorite color and why", with the example of "My favorite color is blue because it reminds me of the sky". And I remember this so strongly because, man, my favorite color is orange and the closest things to a reason I have for it is "I like looking at it". Adult me, if I were faced with that question now, has learned how to make up buyable reasons when people insist. But child me saw that as lying and lying was bad...so I left the reason line blank. My teacher gave it back and insisted I had to put something there, and I guess I ended up taking it home or something because she wouldn't accept that I didn't have a reason. I remember joking with my mother about filling in "because it reminds me of the sky", but it eventually came down to my mother literally calling the school to talk to my teacher because I would not just make up something when I didn't have a reason. And while this story probably says way more about my brain chaos than it says anything about my mother or teacher, I do think this situation could have gone the opposite way where my mother could have just forced me to come up with something and it could left me feeling like "because I do" wasn't a valid reason to like things and I'm kinda glad my mother just rolled with it instead

As a fellow neurodivergent, I find that figuring out WHY I don't like things (or why I do, for that matter) makes it easier to figure out what I will or won't like in the future. The whale looks like it’s wearing a top hat so I’m voting for the uniquely aristocratic name of
Finnegan Huxley Wickerby-Humblecut. Regal yet obviously abundant in puns & nicknames. As for the shirts, I completely agree how being covered is usually more comfortable. With the amount of light, breathable fabric options available, having more fabric can be comfortable without feeling hot or constrained. On a side note, for as long as I can remember, I too have despised buttons on my clothes. (same goes for the need to wear my hair up) The only buttons I truly loved was the extra large metal canister my mom kept that was full of rare & random buttons. After every traumatic event (or anxiety around it later on) I would sit & run my hand through the thousands of buttons for hours. I inherited that canister & a few years ago I found out that I had buttons from the 1500’s, 1800’s, as well as a few WWI & American Civil War buttons. (of course the atrociously ugly ones are some of the most valuable…go figure) Every day I discover new ways in which Neurodivergent people just understand each other in ways that Neurotypical people don’t. WEIRD IS NORMAL & NORMAL IS WEIRD!!!

I know I’m a little late to the party on this one but I have to say I also hate buttons. At least button ups. Mainly because larger chest = gaping and I’ve had this problem since puberty. All of you D cups and below feel grateful because there’s nothing to be jealous about. Loved this video btw.

You sound like me! I used to see my husband sitting in a chair looking straight ahead. Whenever I asked him what he was thinking he’d say nothing. Who does that? After 20 years of marriage I realized he is literally sitting in a chair not thinking! LOL! Wish I could do that, my brain never seems to rest. We just celebrated 39 years of marriage last month so I guess it’s for the best.

Thank you for another great video. I love watching you as I sit here and cross stitch. It feels like chatting with a friend.

Love these ❤ especially the poet one - I definitely agree about ‘covering’=not adjusting. Also agree about needing a reason for liking/not liking something. I struggle a lot when I have emotions that I can’t understand or logically explain and can get quite stuck until I can figure out some plausible cause or reason that makes sense. Fun times 😅
