just discovered your channel via this series and you've definitely got a new subscriber! i played this (and the sequel) on N64 back in the day to death and honestly the shorter music loops never particularly bothered me; i just looked up the full playstation version soundtrack and bought all the albums off of it anyway and the N64 still introduced me to a bunch of these bands. primus and les claypool in particular became a life-long musical love of mine purely thanks to this game on the N64. also the N64 version's graphics for the most part did look better than the playstation which reviews all noted at the time and some even rated the game higher than the playstation version for this reason, though generally it at least got just-as-good review scores. also, something of note that a lot of people on youtube seem to miss who didn't actually grow up with an N64 - technically speaking the truncated soundtrack was not the fault of the N64's cartridge format. there were absolutely other N64 games that had full-length soundtracks from both signed musicians / bands equivalent to what THPS on the playstation had, or from in-house musicians - these games just required a larger cartridge size and / or some form of mp3 compression technology like factor 5's musyx system (which was used for their N64 star wars games as well as licensed out to other companies for some other games as well) or psygnosis' music compression system used for wipeout 64's soundtrack or what nintendo did with games like f-zero x or ridge racer 64. not to mention later stuff on the console that put all this and a lot more on cartridge like the resident evil 2 port. For real, I’d argue this game’s ultimate legacy for those who played it during its era is ultimately going to come down to this. I grew up in a very religious household so this was my introduction for Dead Kennedys, Suicidal Tendencies, Primus, etc… It turned my world upside down. I tried my hand skateboarding and electric guitar because of this game. Got pretty good at guitar… skateboarding not so much 😂
The late 90s, early 00s was a golden time for skateboarding and video games. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater combined those two worlds and it was a game that appealed to people beyond just skateboarders. It most likely introduced skateboarding to a whole new crowd. I was part of it and began skateboarding just shortly before THPS1 released. Skateboarding was a big part of my childhood and so was THPS. My friends and I would play THPS, go outside and skateboard, go back inside and play more THPS, rinse and repeat. The first three games hold a lot of nostalgia, such fun games and times.
The best part about Tony Hawk's Pro Skater was that it was simple. I played TPS with my stepfather to play "HORSE." I now own the remake on Playstation 4, and I have been able to introduce it to my son. We love just doing 2-player freeskate. The replay value of the first 3 TPS games is through the roof!
you mention that THPS came out at the perfect time, I could not agree more. In my town a brand new indoor skatepark also opened around the same time as the popularity took off. It was perfect. We'd come home from school, do our homework, go to the skatepark for a 2hr session, then come back home and play THPS
These games were integral becoming interested in skating culture and things like CKY, Jackass etc. I was obsessed with all of the media around these guys. Thanks for making this! Such great memories.
I started my THPS journey with 2x, essentially THPS 1&2 combined with extra levels on the OG Xbox. Great memories, it's about time for the remakes of 3&4 or an new entry in the main series
THPS is a story of redemption in my opinion! I've lived in Mexico all my life therefore I knew who Tony Hawk was later on; fun fact, I actually knew who he was because of a documentary from xGames called ESPN's ultimate x. I became a huge fan.I used to play that DVD every single day after school! That's how I learned about the 900 and how it just change everything! It funny how during that time the game was in development and he just made it! He changed the game!! I became a fan since then and now I thank you so much for this video champ!! 616 rules!! Thanks Ian! You made my day!
Found your channel by way of your Friday the 13th retrospectives (I still love 3D and all of its cheese)! You do great work! This one hits home for sure, as I'm one of the original designers of the THPS games from Neversoft! Amongst a lot of "History of" and Making of" videos on YT, I love that you lean into a bit of unique perspective when talking about what it was actually like to play or experience these games at the time. I get the same nostalgic feels when you're talking about the earlier 720 and Skate or Die stuff, which is where a healthy amount of my own inspiration came from. Well done, man!
Thank you for the kind words! It’s always crazy to me when one of the creators of the topic I’m covering find my work, hahaha. I always try to bring my personal experiences to whatever I’m writing about. I hope you know what an impact you had on an entire generation. I know you’re not the only person from the team or anything like that, but your fingerprints are on the series. So thank you so much for your work, dude.
Looking forward to part 2! This takes me back. This was a special era, tony hawks, skating culture followed by jackass, cky, HIM, ect. late 90s/early 2000s was such a fun time.
Pro skater 2 was the first one I played and honestly is one of the earliest games I can remember playing. The Tony hawk games are legendary THUG2 being my favorite of all time I can’t wait to see you cover the next game!
I was an N64 kid growing up, so I had the watered down THPS 1 experience.. still absolutely loved it. When THPS 2 came out it was only on PSX and DC, this made me save up and buy a Dreamcast.. one of the best decisions I've made as a gamer.
i played THPS1 and 2 on n64 growing up and i wouldn't call either version watered down - as most reviewers noted at the time, the graphics in both games absolutely looked better on the N64. also i'm one of those crazy people who actually prefer's the N64 controller to the playstation's; it was more comfortable to hold to me and it absolutely had a better d-pad. and the soundtrack being truncated was not really the fault of the N64 cartridge format like a lot of people on youtube seem to suggest - plenty of games like wipeout 64, factor 5's star wars games, nintendo's own f-zero x and ridge racer 64, or even midway's san francisco rush 2049 - and others - had full-length 'real' music soundtracks thanks to some for of mp3 compression like factor 5's musyx system and / or just using a bigger cartridge size. neversoft just chose to go the cheap route when it came to the soundtrack, but they didn't have to and it wasn't exactly the fault of the N64 like a lot of people claim it was.
Some of your best work yet, Ian! Looking forward to the 2nd installment as Pro Skater 2 is probably the game in the series I spent the most amount of time with as a kid. Thank you for your dedicated work!
@@616Entertainment especially pre internet like you mentioned in the video, stuff like this was so rad to have growing up in a house with no computer at the time. Just such a great era to grow up and your channel brings back so many memories dude. Thanks for all the hard work, id support on patreon but money is tight and have a kid on the way soon but if i ever have the extra money i'll be backing you on there.

Late on this one, but this was a great video. This series was never one of the ones I played, but the development and inclusion of tricks almost in real-time after they happened in real life was really cool. I'm glad the royalty deal was taken, he had the right idea haha. Really cool as always, man!

Love your channel. U da man ian. P.s. I kno you said it in the announcements video we were getting 2 at the same time. Long time Patreon supporter. This was one that I’ve been looking forward to the most. Amazing as expected. Can’t wait for the next along with the other ones in the pipeline. Keep up the good work Ian 🤙🏻
Yes the music was awesome in that game which made me want to play it more. I remember pulling off a Kickflip McTwist while going through the elevated control room in the factory and getting a ridiculous amount of points and feeling like the man.
I skated in the late 80's and early 90's a little bit, when I was 9 and 10 years old... never got good, though. Too many other hobbies already took up too much of my time... not to mention school. Anyway, I was hooked as soon as I played THPS at a friends house in... 1999, maybe? 2000? Can't remember... but I bought and played them all the way through Underground 2. In fact, I was playing THPS2 on my Dreamcast last night... that RATM intro is still epic as FUCK! Been looking forward to this one, Ian. I don't even bother watching other retrospectives (well, you and Nikateen)... I know where the best ones are! Good stuff, man.
I loved this series. I still do. I had so much fun with most of the games. It had it's ups and it's downs. But I will always enjoy the classics. I may not be a real skater but I can live vicariously through the games as one.
I still remember the demo from the UK Official mag 25 years ago. It didn't even have the balance meter for grinds and no Tony's special was Christ Air. Was also no special meter added yet.
BRO! You brought me back to ESPN Zone with that Top Skater clip! And fun fact: This along with Sled Storm were my first PS1/Console games I ever played/got. Another fun fact: THPS OSTs helped me get through workdays at Amazon.
Oooo, super excited for this! Right in the childhood. I used to skate as well, still wear skate shoes to this day in fact. Wasn't very good, and the pain was not worth getting better.
Great job with the vid. Such an iconic series. For me, I sat out on the 1st one but 2 and 3, I played until I couldn't no more. Can't wait for the next one. ☝️💪🙌
I still remember meeting Bam Magera in Australia when he was there to promote Tony Hawk 3. He was actually a really friendly guy and it was cool playing as him in the game. Sad to see his struggles in his life. I wasn't a skater myself but I was very into the extreme sports scene as a teen. I had friends who skated and did BMX riding and surfing. I was simply the guy who carried the bag of bandages for when they fell on their faces.😄
The first two games will forever be in my heart. Rodney Mullen to this day is My favorite. It's a minor bummer that you won't cover thug 1, thug 2, thaw, and project 8. But I'm on the band wagon regardless. I've been ITCHING to see you cover this series and I know I'm going to get more than I asked for. Let's do this.
One of the GREATEST video games of ALL TIME! I love the PS5 looking warehouse in the background. Dude..... MAXIMUM EXPOSURE?!!! WOOOOOWWWWW!!! Reminds me of watching Blind Date and the 5th Wheel 😂😂😂😂
Shout out to Skate or Die for the NES! I never got into skateboarding, but I rented that one time from Pharmhouse, and had a pretty decent time with it.
Can't wait till you get to THPS2 and talk about the impressive GBA port! That game ate up so many hours of my time on the bus, school, and trips when I'm off of the PlayStation. :D
I heard bands like The Ramones, QOTSA, Fu Manchu, Sublime, Sex Pistols, Black Flag and Bad Brains because of this series. I now play in bands (this is one) because of this franchise. It changed my life for real. I wouldn't be half the person I am now.
Aye man let’s fucking Gooo THPS was my shit as an 11 year old back in the day. It not only turned me onto Skateboarding but Rock, POP music… Can’t wait for the second video…. I got a lot to say about the second entry!
For me, I had the N64 version THPS and despite it was the inferior version that me and my siblings had so much fun playing it. My younger brother would beat all of us in score attack. He was a maniac racking up combos like a pro.
For me, I remember playing tiny hawks pro skater one and two with my late brother. that game introduced me to some amazing music. Although I could not pull off the tricks, I enjoyed having fun with it nonetheless. One thing I did notice in the video is the sound that is played when a special move is performed. If you do end up covering the two, I have a bit of a request. If you don’t mind and if you’re able to do, so, would it be possible for you to cover any accessibility features that might be in the remake? I’m looking forward to part two of the series. You do amazing things. Keep up the amazing work. You’re crushing it. You rock. 1:33
Yessir! It’s time for the History of Tony Hawk! Can’t wait for all the nostalgia you’ll be showing, Ian!😊❤️ *Edit* - This was a very great first part, Ian. So much nostalgia given, I love it. Can’t wait for part 2 and the rest of the series. Hope you and all the DanDans have a safe and great weekend. I love you all.❤️😊
So I watched my brother play maybe the 2nd game on psx or PS2. I was excited for Xbox and one of the biggest main steads was the thps serries it has been one of my all time favorite series among any console and computers in the past 45 years or so of my life. Thanks for doing this 🎉❤
i literally jus decided last night that i was gonna beat all the not shit tony hawks games from pro skater 1 to proving ground and then this drops, im hype
I only played this game on the N64 when I was a young child so when I found out the songs were real as I got older and had lyrics, I was surprised lmao
Learned about this game at Pizza Hut after getting a demo disk. I preordered it for PS1 and then got it on N64 & Dreamcast. The Dreamcast version was definitely the best. Got THPS 1 through 4 and THUG 1&2 then I had Tony Hawk fatigue.
I love this game series, even though I was born when Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 was released I only grew up playing Tony Hawk: Underground 1 and 2, and Tony Hawk Proving Ground, but when Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 and 2 Remastered on PS4 I got it for Christmas and played the game alot, but its sad Activison cancelled the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 and 4 Remastered becayse Microsoft bought Activision and they want to focus more on Call of Duty and any other Live service games, but at least we got a Tony Hawk game for the next Gen Console
Ever since I played THPS2 in early 2001, I've became an instant fan. One of my former friends HATED THPS series, but when THUG came along, he instantly liked it. When I've asked him why he likes THUG, but hates THPS, he said: "Because THUG is like GTA, but with skateboards." True story.

I love every second of this. THANK YOU! Cannot wait for Pt. 2 and beyond.
Excited for this. Thank you and thank everyone who supported it.
Hell yea man!
I loved this series. I still do. I had so much fun with most of the games. It had it's ups and it's downs. But I will always enjoy the classics.
I may not be a real skater but I can live vicariously through the games as one.
Great video dude! Can't wait for the rest. These games defined a generation!
Thanks for watching, man.
Hell yea dude
Great job with the vid. Such an iconic series. For me, I sat out on the 1st one but 2 and 3, I played until I couldn't no more. Can't wait for the next one. ☝️💪🙌
IAN THIS IS YOUR GIFT MAN, you are so talented and I LOVE SUPPORTING THIS CHANNEL
Thank you for the kind words!
Didn't play this series but I trust this will be the best series of vids to entertain & educate me
This was so fun man. :-) I can’t wait for the next one!!!
tony haws was my first ps1 game when i was 6, one of my favorite game series ever!
18:11 - 18:25: "IT'S LOUDER THAN A METALLICA CONCERT IN THERE!"
Oh yeah! I've been waiting for this retrospective!!!
You've outdone yourself again, pal. Great work
Glad you enjoyed it, dude. Much more to come.
Here and Now was my favorite song In happy we got Tony Hawk Proskater 1 and 2 remake
FUCKEN stoked for the rest; this was awesome! June is my fav month!
The soundtrack on the PlayStation was legendary
One of the GREATEST video games of ALL TIME! I love the PS5 looking warehouse in the background. Dude..... MAXIMUM EXPOSURE?!!! WOOOOOWWWWW!!! Reminds me of watching Blind Date and the 5th Wheel 😂😂😂😂
this guy just can't stop! im so excited to see the next part on the GTA retrospective and now we get THPS? 🤯
Shout out to Skate or Die for the NES! I never got into skateboarding, but I rented that one time from Pharmhouse, and had a pretty decent time with it.
Wwf and thps peaking at the same time was legendary. These are the only 2 game franchises I cared about playing during this time 😊
Can't wait till you get to THPS2 and talk about the impressive GBA port!
THPS 1 and 2 were my childhood. I still remember my surprise at unlocking Spiderman in the 2nd game.
Heeellllll yea dude
Can’t wait for the vids on 2 3 and 4 💯😮💨❤️🔥
For me, I remember playing tiny hawks pro skater one and two with my late brother. that game introduced me to some amazing music. You rock. 1:33
Tremendous as always!
It’s been 86 years , it’s finally HERE!!! 😂😂
Yessir! It’s time for the History of Tony Hawk! Can’t wait for all the nostalgia you’ll be showing, Ian!😊❤️
*Edit* - This was a very great first part, Ian. So much nostalgia given, I love it. Can’t wait for part 2 and the rest of the series. Hope you and all the DanDans have a safe and great weekend. I love you all.❤️😊
These games were so fun to me. I miss these games.
I remember play pro skater with my brothers and friends trying to out do each other. That may have been peak childhood.
This right here was my childhood
Also: Goldfinger has gone on record and said this game shot them into the stratosphere with their Superman song
ohhhh yeh buddy. Jamie thomas made me a skateboarder for almost 25 years now lol. what a ride its been. This game really helped form a culture
Perfect timing.
YES!! Its finally here!!!
Brooo the soundtracks on all the tony hawk games hard
This was a fun watch Ian
Thanks man
Classic game.
I remember I had the demo and play it countless hours b4 I got the actual game.
616 Talking about THPS?? Hell yeah, brother brother.
Omg I forgot all about Top Skater!!! That game was awesome.
A classic.
22:14 anyone remember when Tony tried to give the foo fighters some copies only to make fun of Dave Grohl for not having a chipped ps1
Absolutely love tony hawk's pro skater 1 the game Is so amazing and Incredible one of the best games ever made easily ❤
Peak late 90s, early 200s vibes!!!
Hahahaha
Perfect video can't wait for the next one
Thanks for watching!
my guy was steve Caballero for no reason i was like '' i'll try him'' hahah
The Pizza Hut PlayStation demo disc 1! It really helped the popularity of this game! Might be the great demo disc of all time!
I played the N64 version growing up so when I first played the PS1 version years later I couldn’t believe how different the soundtrack was lol
"i got lunch" is why the birdman is an icon
