Tony Hawk is the reason Vans are still around. When he was just getting started in the 1980s, he found that the flat, treaded sole was perfect for gripping a skateboard. He spread the word, and now they're the standard in skateboarding.

Believe me, most of us want to see an actually good new release for games from our childhood, not a soulless cash grab like this that has even less content than the first game in the franchise. Reviews absolutely should be looked at as a guide so you have at least an idea what to expect. Negative reviews don't necessarily mean you won't like the game, I like lots of games that had mixed to negative reception, but if every single review says the game is broken and empty and requires a day one patch because most of the game isn't even on the physical disc that you paid for, that's not necessarily something nostalgia can fix.

I notice you didn't mention how this game was only made because Activision realised they were about to lose the Tony Hawk license - they bought it years ago, but never did anything with it - so, using what time was left before their contract expired, pushed out THPS 5, just to have _something_ come out of that old deal.
The game being made so close to the contract expiring is why it never got many post-launch updates - the devs and publisher legally couldn't work on it anymore.

  • @hatshooter5121

The first level is "the berrics". It's a legendary skate location/company in which eric koston is involved. It is modeled after the real thing. Most skaters would kill to skate that place. It is done exactly the way it should be done. Probably just not a good decision to make it the first level. Should have been a bonus location for real skaters to experience after they're done with the main game.

When I heard he had built a skateboard park to honor the life & mourn the death of Tyre Nichols, it was such an amazing, sweet, generous thing he did. And that ain’t the start of it; Idk what all he’s done to be labeled a legendary, generous man, but I’m certain he’s done so much. It’s a shame some of the games, like this one, soil Hawk’s legacy.

Most fans I've talked to seem to PREFER the lack of a timer since as you guys highlighted, the games reward exploration. You can't really explore a level much if after 2 minutes everything resets. That "Asteroid Belt" level though. How do you make a SPACE level boring? That's an achievement.
The game scolding you for going out of bounds is just so in-your-face. No idea why anyone thought that was a good idea.
I was never into skateboarding, but because I grew up in southern California, Tony Hawk was literally *THE* first celebrity I ever heard of, and my parents even bought me Tony Hawk merchandise when I was 4 and didn't know a THING about him or skateboarding (and yes, that was in 1999.)

I highly recommend THPS1+2. It's the best THPS1 & THPS2 remake/remaster. Vicarious Visions, who previously made the portable versions of Tony Hawk games for Game Boy Advance/Nintendo DS, did an amazing job at remaking THPS1 & THPS2, unlike Robomodo with Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD. But admitting, I did like THPS HD at the time while others hated it but attempting to go back to it after playing THPS1+2, THPS1+2 completely replaces THPS HD for me. I even prefer THPS2x Xbox remake of THPS1&2 over THPS HD but THPS1+2 is the best over the two other remasters/remakes.

The Berrics wasn't the first level in the Tony Hawk series to be a direct recreation of a real-world skatepark. THPS4 had Kona Skatepark, which is a real-life skatepark in Jacksonville, Florida. If I recall, among the game's bonus unlockables was a mini-documentary about the real-life Kona.

      In no particular order...
      Burnside
      Kona
      FDR by way of Philadelphia
      FDR outright in Proving Ground
      Lansdowne
      Skatopia had Real World elements
      Skater Island (Rest in Peace)
SPoT (Skate Park of Tampa) in both the actual level in 2x and the Tampa level in THUG.
That's all off the top of my head, and not including known spots worked into a game. The (San Fran) Streets level is essentially a collection of spots, from the EMB Fountain, Gonz ledge, and Hubba ledges, School II has the Carlsbad stairset in that secret area, Skate Heaven is literally this with several spots, and Hawaii has the Wallows area.

Something that didn't get said about the combos that's a Huge part of the appeal is that it's a great risk VS reward system.
As your combo goes up, it becomes harder to hold manuals or grinds, making it harder to maintain your combo.
Every extra trick earns you more points, while making you more likely to bail, earning you Nothing.
It's a constant gamble, and personal skill judgement, "Can I hold a grind just a Little longer to hit that angle, get air, and get one more trick? Or should I bank what I've got?"
It creates a consistent rise and fall of tension, entirely driven by your own gameplay, and at your own pace.
The difficulty rises as You decide to push yourself further.
And this makes even the earliest levels still fun. THPS1 tracked each skater's progress separately, but the combo system means that your First runs of Warehouse will be Very different to your second runs when you try a different character.
    It's good. I'm saying that it's good.

Disney's Extreme Skate Adventure was developed by the once legendary Toys For Bob and they utilized the same game engine as Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4. In fact they got permission from both NeverSoft and Activision to use the engine, and even had some of the original developers in NeverSoft to help further develop the game.

No matter what people say, my favorite one is still American Wasteland, I really liked the mid-00s style, the open-world, the BMX, the stupid missions, etc. Even Project 8 and Proving Ground, while pretty flawed, were still really fun experiences to me. Even at their worst, the Neversoft games were at least decent, while the Robomodo era was just a trainwreck from beggining to end and to this day, I still can't comprehend how they were able to make more than one game. Even the least offensive, Tony Hawk Pro Skater HD, isn't even close to the quality of the worst the Neversorft era offered (which is probably Proving Ground). Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5 was a cash grab from the beginning and had no hope of being even mediocre, they just rushed the development to release it before losing the license (I think it was released the exact last day they could legally).

A couple things: I play this game on my Xbox One from time to time, and I've never had an issue with the game kicking me out or disallowing me to play because of an internet connection. If you go into the game and then pick a level from level select. you can start it in Private Match (press Y instead of A) and that lets you play...
I am playing off a digital copy, though, but I don't see how that would make a difference.
In fact I just did it right now, so... ?
Another thing: you can toggle the "Slam" mechanic in a way. If you go into the options, you can set it to requiring two presses to activate instead of 1. This helps a lot with making it feel like a more natural Tony Hawk game. But the Slam is necessary for some goals if you want to do them efficiently.
The footage where you kept falling, you can tell that most of that was you trying to fail. You were doing more tricks than were able to be completed at that height.
The glitches are bad, but they aren't as constant as you make them sound.
There are plenty of "things" in the levels. I believe it's the art design that's to blame for the feeling of emptiness. The lack of detail on objects and the overall "bland and doughy" look does a horrible job of making the world feel right. I guarantee if places like Venice Beach and Warehouse were in this game, but done in this lazy aesthetic with no other changes, they would feel right at home with the blandness. The biggest issue with the levels is that they lack any flow or logic, unlike the levels of old Tony Hawk games. The second biggest problem, as you mentioned, is the lack of secret areas, let alone the lack of meaningful secret areas. You could tell that the people that made this game had no idea what made a good level. But as far as that empty feeling, I think that's down to the really awful art style.
The idea of the developers paying homage "to an actual skate space" is something that's been going on since the original game. It's just that usually the games reference bits and pieces from real life spots as opposed to entire levels. School II in THPS2, for instance, has the Carlsbad Gap in the secret area. That's a really well-known skate spot. The "Leap of Faith" area and rail is a direct copy of the real life spot, too... there are countless references to real skate spots and places in pretty much all the Neversoft games. It's quite the rabbit hole. So The Berrics being features is nothing special. The one exception to this "bits and pieces" thing is that I think a good portion of the competition levels are actual skate parks in real life. Chicago and Burnside from the first game are 100% real, for instance. So again, The Berrics? Nothing new.
In my opinion, the powerups were an interesting idea, but they were executed very poorly.
It is true that Neversoft had a lot of stumbles, especially in the post THUG world. But their failures pale in comparison to the ones Robomodo committed.
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD is not a total reworking of the first two games. It has only 7 levels out of the 19 available in THPS1 and THPS2 combined. Plus 3 levels from Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3. And the only way to get a Revert ability, as far as I know, is to have that THPS3 DLC. THPS HD is an atrocity, and I could go on forever about all the horrible mistakes it made. I find it more offensive to the franchise than THPS5 even though I would argue that THPS5 is objectively the worse game.
Okay I have gotten to the point in the video where you mention you've been playing the unpatched version up to this point, but my points all still stand. The option to make the Slam require two button presses was added in an update... and I think that's about all that you missed out on from the stuff I mentioned.
I just tried my copy again, and I was able to get into my own solo game. I'm really not sure what you guys are doing wrong, or if me having the digital version really is the difference? I just don't see that as a possibility, but maybe.
Okay. Anyways. The main reason for posting this was to say that you are definitely able to play "offline" when you're still online. And the Slam can be adjusted.
And I don't mean to sound like I'm defending this game. It's awful. But I wanted to clear a few things up so it's more fair, that's all.

13:24 The guys go on a tangent about the Berrics level being based upon a real park in LA. This isn’t the first time that the series replicated a real park for a level. The competition levels in 1 and 2 do this. The Chicago and Burnside parks in 1, the Marseille, France, SkateStreet and Bullring levels in 2 all were based upon real parks. Then again, those were later in the game and not the very first level in the game compared to the original Warehouse, Hangar, Foundry from 3, College from 4 and future first levels.

Their Tony Hawk license was about to expire, so they rushed a game into existence to capitalize on the license before the deadline. The game wasn't going to be finished before they lost the license, so they just released an unfinished version of the game. They submitted the on disc version for release, then rushed a day one patch in an attempt to still finish the game by the release date. Of course, the license was still running out soon after the release, at which point they were forced to shut down the servers and remove the game from digital storefronts because they no longer had the license to continue to publish Tony Hawk games. It was an attempt to scam fans out of money for a game you couldn't really play anymore only weeks after buying it.

You meet up with famous pro skaters and interesting NPC's like Ollie the Bum and Ollie the Magic Bum who is actually a different guy.

The fact you never even mentioned the N64 release of Pro Skater 1 deeply hurts me! LOL! I played that version a LOT!

I think the craziest thing about living through the 90s as a child was that I knew who Tony Hawk was, but I'd never heard of Bill Clinton until midway through Bush's presidency.

Wow, that was probably the best episode of just bad I've ever watched. Y'all kept it rained in and talked about what you knew about.

i remember that deathmatch fireball thing was in underground as well with its local multiplayer modes, although underground did it much better simply by having larger more varied maps with hidden areas making chasing eachother down more fun, there was another really fun ode where you highlight pllaces y preforming tricks on them and whoever had the most places highlighted by the end wins, kind of like splatoon on skateboards

The fact that THPS 3+4 was cancelled genuinely makes me extremely depressed...

It's funny that you're covering this atrocity as I recently bought 1 + 2 while it was on Sale. Also the Nerd³ review of this "game" is probably one of my fave reviews of all time
