there are still many westerners who are Islamophobic and afraid to go to a Muslim majority country... they still think that Muslim countries are not safe for non-Muslims.

Great video Taylor. I have lived in Penang for seven years now and have no intention of going back to my "home" country. Oh, and by the way, while I was working, I lived in many countries and I can absolutely vouch for the fantastic Malaysian people being the most friendly helpful people I have ever met.
Here's what most people don't get. Yes, it can be hot, if you're under direct sunlight. However, the air is always room temperature, at sea level. Cooler the higher up you go. It might be a cloudless day, with the oppressive sun bearing down on you but if you get underneath any kind of shade, it's pleasant. In some other countries , the air is warm so you can't escape the heat. This doesn't happen in Malaysia.
Many expats from the Western world are considering Malaysia because of your channel Andrew, please keep up the good work and that wonderful personality of yours. We love y ou.
I am back in Penang for a couple of months. I looked at real estate in KL last month. Lots of traffic in KL. I grew up in the south and spent a lot of time in DC, too, but I still can't get use to the heat in Malaysia. I lived at the town center in Reston and I never found it as hot as it is here. I was walking around the town center all the time. I'm staying at Island Plaza. As fare as I can see: No bugs here ...not one. The apartment I rented is pretty spotless,. Island plaza has opened up a dozen or more restaurants and there are two groceries nearby so I am comfy here. It looks like more restaurants to come! When you're in Penang, try the Venti cafe for coffee. It's the best I've tried in Malaysia. The people in Malaysia are some of the best. They are kind, accepting, efficient, etc. About Malaysians speaking English, it's unfortunate for us Americans but the Malaysians --more often than not--speak a better English than we do! Get to work on your English Americans! I am American and I am sick of trying to understand what other Americans are saying. Thank you! Malaysia will be listed as a 1st world country in 2030. KL is the 6th most visited city worldwide. KL had more visitors last year than NYC. That isn't really a surprise, is it? Penang is the 13th most visited city worldwide. Thanks for the program Andrew.

Yes you are a wonderful Ambassador for MALAYSIA🇲🇾. Thank you. I like to think that this is your gift to my country (yours too now) in exchange for what Malaysia is offering you. Happy Retirement and many more happy days. Stay well❤
Been here 30 years from Seattle on MM2H I speak Malay as most expats don't I strongly suggest it. Helps getting accepted in the community. I'd rather have the heat then the 275 days of Pacific Northwest RAIN!
Hearing you speak kindly about Muslim folks makes me so happy. My sister is a convert from Christianity and for decades I have met so many lovely folks from all sorts of Muslim countries. ♡
As a Malaysian, I can vouch for what Taylor has said in this video. Taylor is a person who knows Malaysia like a local! Keep up the great work Taylor, I've been here since you had only a few thousand subscribers. Congrats on 20k and let's see 50k next!
Hi Taylor, not sure how I ended up on your channel but I love it here and I am staying 😅. I lived in Indonesia for 3.5yrs and I loved it. So good to see you living and thriving in Malaysia ❤
G'day Taylor, I spent some of the best ten weeks in Penang a little while ago. Everything you said was spot on. I paid RM65 for a steak meal, which is cheaper than OZ. Nyonya food was my favorite. I was living next door to a convent that ran a kindergarten and most of the kids were Muslim. My wife did not want to go originally. She had heard every stereotype of Malaysia from her friends. She loved Penang and we will go again for sure.
Hi Ed, I live 100 miles south of Tampa and I'm considering a move to Malaysia. For a couple of years I've been watching TH-cam videos and planning on the Philippines until recently. Good luck on your new adventures.
Another Floridian here. I plan on moving in two years when I retire. Never even contemplated until I discovered Taylor a year ago. Now I cannot wait to move.
Hello fellow Floridians. I live in Orlando. I lived in SE Asia for 20 years, much of that time in Malaysia. It is definitely a retiree's heaven. Taylor lives in a perfect area, still close to everything. You will make so many friends in Malaysia. They people are generally very receptive of foreigners and very endearing. You are not making a mistake choosing Malaysia. English is widespread. Excellent healthcare and modern hospitals. Many doctors studied in the UK. And best of all affordable living. You might never have to cook or clean yourself again. I find Taylor's advice to be honest and accurate to my own experience. He's a great resource of informaton.
@@louislovestrandThanks so much Louis for your input. In addition to Taylor, recently I've been watching vlogs from Ben Fisherman. He adds a good, new perspective. I'm excited to moving there.
The bird is known as the Asian Koel, or 'Burung Tuwu' in Malay. Indeed, the Charlie Ant/Rove beetle appears to be more prevalent in Penang. During my years living in Melaka, I never encountered them. Their abundance may be due to the paddy fields in Kedah, which provide an ideal breeding ground. Regarding the window screens, they are indeed challenging to find one. I had to DIY create them myself, and locally, we typically refer to them as mosquito nets.
On the topic of mosquito net, modern houses with air-cond don't need them because the inhabitants can just close all the doors & windows and then turn on the air-cond. While for traditional houses, especially village style wooden houses, they did use mosquito net, just not on the windows, but over the beds! Much easier to set up and doesn't require extensive installation fee.
Kalau kena gigit semut tu.. Bersih dengan kapas alcohol.. Pedih sikit.. Then Sapu atau oles minyak supaya rasa Terbakar tu hilang.. Semut tu sedikit berbisa.. 😅 Opss.. Jangan sapu minyak angin... Minyak masak pun OK..
I actually not fond of insect screen because it traps so much dust on the surface. Also if insects an issue we just install the electronic repellent device or the incense type thing
One thing you don’t experience there like you do in the Philippines. Are power outages, cell phone signal going out especially in the smaller cities. And the infrastructure is bad compared to KL. I agree Malaysia is a developing country definitely not a third world. Great video!
What is the average temperature in KL? The answer is 18 Celcius. People go to offices wearing jackets and wrap themselves in shawls and blankets. It is that cold. Outside, it is a different story. We do not go outside much, only Taylor does that 😊
Love this video! I met some great friends while I was there! The grab drivers were very nice and even stopped for me to take pictures! I can’t wait to get to Malaysia 🇲🇾 Thank you too Andy!
Great video as always. The look on your face after that motorcycle passed by is classic! So glad you kept it in the video. Had me laughing so hard. You are probably my favorite TH-camr so i always look forward to Friday night here in NYC. All the best!
Malaysian here living in the klang valley, 10mins away from KL. I have never encountered a snake in all my years living in a landed property but i guess it depends where your house is located. Obviously if its near heavily wooded areas, u may encounter them. The only insescts that bothers me are mosquitoes. Dengue is endemic in Malaysia so u want to make sure that you are not exposed to the aedes egypti mosquitoes which carry the disease. Simple measures like closing doors and windows at dawn and dusk when they are most active helps alot. I also use an insect repellent spray for my little bud. I thought about why many people dont use window screens. I think it may be because for hundreds of years, our ancestors have never used it so its just not something one considers as important to have in their homes. Less important than having fans, ACs, water heaters, water filter and other things to make life comfortable. Having said that, it is a good idea to have them and u can have it installed easily at your property or ask your landlord if they can consider putting it on for you. You are right about the weather and the rain. Since its usually for short durations, u will see that most Malaysians dont bother with an umbrella. Amazingly, i have never seen the Charlie ant 😅. That is something new i learned from you today. Thanks for posting ❤
Great honest review Taylor. Love Malaysian people, food, weather malls and secular state of multi ethinic, religions thats make it unique and her strength. Love Malaysia i would retire there 🇲🇾
Talking about malls and food, we are not a fan of processed food like canned food, packed food etc but it is readily available everywhere. Fresh food is where our appetites are 😂
I really like your voice and tone, so calming. Good to listen after such a busy day of work and want to rewind at night. Thank you. You reminds me of professor
I grew up in a house with screens and have always had screens, most of my family have it too. They don’t come as standard so you need to get someone to install them, but I also understand that most people who don’t want them is because it slows the air flow - as you know we Malaysians like to open all the windows in the evening to let our house cool down. I also grew up in the 70s and 80s drinking the tap water and was surprised during my first overseas trip that this is not safe in many countries. I suppose that it is just the trend in the last 20 years for people to drink bottled water everywhere, even in countries where tap water is supposed to be safe.
You can brush yr teeth with tap water anywhere in Malaysia, many have been using the water dispenser ,well its well promoted by companies from Korea,Yes,u can boil the water n drink, its safe.
The bird is Asian Koel or locally known as Burung Tuwu. Malaysia isn't a fully Muslim country as secular law is used in the Constitution and Judiciary. Only certain things involving the Muslims only will subject to Shariah law. I used to drink tap water in the 80s during my school days and still surviving today. Even drinking from the stream! But it's better to boil the water first before drinking it Your face when the bike passed by is Epic! One of our problems for decades 😂😂
When i was in Malaysia in the early 80s, the tap water tasted like it came from mountain springs and it did not have a hint of chlorine taste in it. I miss Malaysian water in the US
Good morning Sir!...like your people!...i'm from Ampang district of Selangor, Malaysia. Come down to Ampang and we meet at "mamak" to enjoy the puri & teh tarik! Cheers!
i like how you go through all these topics. They may seem trivial, but they're important topics for people who don't know and would like to go visit/live here. I remember when i was in a village, where we get the tap water directly from the natural clean water stream from the river, we can drink it. it tastes nice too, no chlorine taste. but yes normally we boil water instead of directly drink from the tap.
not many people go back and watch all of the old videos. Doing the same topic every so often is a good thing in my opinion. Thanks for your videos! I wish you could sit with some more female expats that have moved there.
Now we had two expats, one from the US (AndrewTaylor) and the another one is from the UK, Saira Hayati... Two good info for others to have a plan to stay here in Malaysia... Maybe, you Andrew should look into it too...😊
Plus Malaysia located in the centre of South East Asia You can easily reach your favourite destinations like Bali , Ho Chin Min or Bangkok in 3-4 hrs or less.😊
Hi Taylor, it is a well produced video. U r actually doing Malaysia's Ministry of Tourism a favor by promoting Malaysia to the whole world thru your videos over the years. When I was a student in the USA in the early 1980s, many American students in my classes didn't know where Malaysia is. Whenever I was asked; I always did reply, Malaysia is located between Thailand n Singapore. They pretty much know Thailand. There was a song in 1984 by Murray Head titled One Night in Bangkok, always being aired by the local radio stations. I mentioned Singapore instead of Indonesia bcos back than, Singapore was already well known internationally as a financial hub. Since the pandemic is over, a lot of Americans n Canadians r visiting and/or residing in Malaysia which is a good thing. Keep up the good work Taylor, we Malaysians really appreciate it v much.
2:39 Glad you mentioned this, Taylor. Most foreigners don't know this and many prefer NOT TO KNOW. What's worse is that they usually think that both are the same in terms of cultures, local languages and demographics because foreign media has been fed time and time again with a peninsula-centric version of Malaysia.
Hi Taylor, love your videos. I'm a Malaysian who had the privilege to live in New York for work and studies. In general, Islam is the official religion of Malaysia but other religions are free to practice. It is enshrined in the constitution. Even though we have issues here with its imperfections, there are a lot of things that I (or we) should not take for granted. There are things US is good at, the same way as Malaysia is and likewise. Just wondering, what is your favorite Malaysian food and the initial culture shocks when you lived in Malaysia?
Oh my! Taylor, you better sit down for this question. You may have no understanding of this but here goes... we are 2 conservative Gents from Manhattan (originally from St Pete!!!) We're Friends of Dorothy and wondering if Malaysia could be right for us??? We're very discreet in the day to day, but what happens when one of us is hospitalized, which could happen in old age? Are family/spousal rights respected? We're currently in Italy looking at retirement sites and it's just too darned cold here! We'd like to buy you a hot chocolate or maybe a cappuccino so I hope this Super Thanks link works. Thanks for any thoughts that might soothe our trepidation. I'm hoping Malaysia honors the Golden Rule but we clearly wouldn't be in Kansas anymore! You're the best! From 2 NYC fans who adore you! Ciao!
I can't answer all of your concerns, but I can say that Malaysia is recognized as having one of the best, if not the best medical healthcare in the world. Many come to Malaysia for medical travel. You can look it up
Thanks Andy. Great info from you. Lots info from you. American or other European guys will at least know better from Andy experience. Have a great weekend 😊
Yes, the Malaysian people are the kindest people I've ever met. And on another note... The bird call *might* be the black-naped oriole. When I am in Malaysia, I live just above tree-line near KL and whenever I hear that call, I'll look out the window and often see black-naped orioles flying by. The call on the TH-cam videos I have seen is somewhat similar, but usually at a different pitch (which might be explained by the locations, thousands of km away).
direct sunlight WILL make you feel hot, however, get under shade and the air is kinda cool.. which is why some people grew trees in front of their houses and let the air flows inside of your house... some people didn't even use aircond because their air flow is so good. one example is the Masjid Besi in Putrajaya, the whole thing made from steel but there's no huge air conditioning used.. well there's a lil bit on some spots but during prayer time? it's surprisingly cool... and i tried to use the same theory in my house during hot days = it works! just need to block direct sunlight, and you're set
That's the Ampang Hilir lake! I used to live a few metres down the road in front of the Lebanese embassy. Equally confusing was when driving on the right hand side in Texas and Louisiana... Florida too. But I set my brain to laterally inverse the road directions in the UK, Australia, Singapore and Malaysia.
Hi Andrew. We are coming next month from Queensland. Any great food places in Georgetown you can recommend? Loved watching this. If you are around might catch up for drinks or a meal?
Ooooh your expression when the noisy motorcycle passed by! Just like mine, too. I tell myself that they are a test on my patience by Allah swt and the riders were youngsters who didn't realise their behaviour were disruptive. It helped me to quickly forgive them and calm myself. Enjoy your stay here.
Good afternoon Taylor.. Thanks for sharing.. But you forgot to mention about petrol and gas prices etc, schools/universities and hospitals, beaches and islands, one of the oldest tropical rainforest in the world, KL gigantic skyscrapers, Cameron Highlands, Bukit Tinggi and Janda Baik in Pahang and also pets in Malaysia especially the one and the only your "EG" 😻
Dear Clark whatever your relationship is, it will be respected as long as it is not in the society face. As far as hospitalisation, as long as you have given authorization for one to act on your behalf, there would be no problem. If you are particular, have a power of attorney document. Cost of healthcare is tremendously cheaper. Premiums for a 40 year old is US 400 annually. If you have retirement visa, you can use the national healthcare system. Prescription drugs for diabetes and hypertension will cost you... I kid you not 5 dollar a month Last point there is no capital gains tax, nor is there any inheritance taxes Good luck
@montgomeryclark7531 Taylor has some videos on the Malaysian healthcare system previously, you could check out those videos and some other expats' too. It's highly efficient and affordable. About the other issue, nobody bothers whatever you do behind closed doors. Yes, proper documentations is advisable - e.g. a power of attorney document listing your partner as next of Kin for hospitalisation, or have a lawyer to arrange for your will, etc. in case you're worried about this too when the time comes, should have everything covered

Malaysia isn't a fully Muslim country as secular law is used in the Constitution and Judiciary. Only certain things involving the Muslims only will subject to Shariah law.
I used to drink tap water in the 80s during my school days and still surviving today. Even drinking from the stream! But it's better to boil the water first before drinking it
Your face when the bike passed by is Epic! One of our problems for decades 😂😂
A very good run-through on malaysia by Taylor. Congratulations.
When i was in Malaysia in the early 80s, the tap water tasted like it came from mountain springs and it did not have a hint of chlorine taste in it. I miss Malaysian water in the US
Malaysia needs more fabulous people like you
Awwww ☺️
Well done uncle Taylor... nice info plus funny 😅
You meant it, Taylor. I do appreciated of how you're telling the casually truth.
Thanks!
Thank you so much!!! 😊
Great video.. Thanks .. 🥰🥰🥰
I live in Washington D.C. area and love summer here. Give me heat and humidity. I hate winter.
not many people go back and watch all of the old videos. Doing the same topic every so often is a good thing in my opinion. Thanks for your videos! I wish you could sit with some more female expats that have moved there.
I totally agree but I have a harder time getting women to go on camera! 🤗
Sir, love you. really you are very great person. Always stay blessed
Awwww, thank you so much 😊
This video makes me wanna be your neighbor, Andy. You are a so down to earth type of people. Have a wonderful day there in KL, my friend.
Wow, thank you ☺️
I like your positivity, Sir.
I appreciate that ☺️
Now we had two expats, one from the US (AndrewTaylor) and the another one is from the UK, Saira Hayati... Two good info for others to have a plan to stay here in Malaysia... Maybe, you Andrew should look into it too...😊
Saira is speaking as pakistani british muslim, Andrew speaking as non-muslim american. Different point of view.
Plus Malaysia located in the centre of South East Asia
You can easily reach your favourite destinations like Bali , Ho Chin Min or Bangkok in 3-4 hrs or less.😊
Thank you so much 😊
2:39 Glad you mentioned this, Taylor. Most foreigners don't know this and many prefer NOT TO KNOW. What's worse is that they usually think that both are the same in terms of cultures, local languages and demographics because foreign media has been fed time and time again with a peninsula-centric version of Malaysia.
Exactly! The rains help to deal with the heat. Thank you
Yes it does! 🤗
Not really any culture shocks. Beef rendang is my favourite Malaysian food. ☺️
@@andrewtaylor4558 beef rendang is good when it free, especially now, raya time 🤣
Great info as always, thanks Andrew. Any update on your mm2h renewal ?
Not started yet.
You can look it up
Thanks so much. Everyone in Malaysia keeps a low profile. It’s not an issue. 😊
Tysm ❤
You’re welcome! ☺️
Thanks Andy. Great info from you. Lots info from you. American or other European guys will at least know better from Andy experience. Have a great weekend 😊
Looking forward to those Taylor's Tritan Insulated Glasses Inc.😉
You deserve a cup of coffee ❤
Rains also good to us, it cleans the road, weeakly 😁
Yes, the Malaysian people are the kindest people I've ever met.
And on another note... The bird call *might* be the black-naped oriole. When I am in Malaysia, I live just above tree-line near KL and whenever I hear that call, I'll look out the window and often see black-naped orioles flying by. The call on the TH-cam videos I have seen is somewhat similar, but usually at a different pitch (which might be explained by the locations, thousands of km away).
Call of Asian Koel better !
Thanks
Thanks for your support! 🤗
direct sunlight WILL make you feel hot, however, get under shade and the air is kinda cool.. which is why some people grew trees in front of their houses and let the air flows inside of your house... some people didn't even use aircond because their air flow is so good. one example is the Masjid Besi in Putrajaya, the whole thing made from steel but there's no huge air conditioning used.. well there's a lil bit on some spots but during prayer time? it's surprisingly cool... and i tried to use the same theory in my house during hot days = it works! just need to block direct sunlight, and you're set
Thanks but too many to list. You can hardly go wrong in Penang. Thanks for watching!
That bird calling in the park is called Commin Koel. The male is blackish. The female is brownish with some faint stripes.
tq sir
You can fit bug screen on windows and garden doors. Its a option.
😊 i love that birdsound, some call the emergingeconomy country.
Im sure you can get most of the imported grocery brands down the road from your condo, Hock Choon supermarket.
Yep
sir, you are very great person. i like your personality. and keep keen desire to come there and meet with you.
thanks
Kiitos!
Thank you so much! 😊
Hello Taylor
In 2024, MAS is categorised as a developed nation by the world HDI index.
Lovely thoughts. 🤗
You touched quite some misconceptions there and on all I agree a 100%. Not surprisingly though, I think we think quite alike. 😂
My favorite bug there is the large rhino Beatles .. very cool
We do have window screens if you wish to install them.
Andy, I have that exact same shirt!!
I got it at Bob Rock!
I kid you not 5 dollar a month
Last point there is no capital gains tax, nor is there any inheritance taxes
Good luck
You're very kind for taking the time to reply to me and I thank you
@montgomeryclark7531 Taylor has some videos on the Malaysian healthcare system previously, you could check out those videos and some other expats' too.
