Hi Anymarchy, want to know a fun brazilian anecdote about the Catalina?
Brazil got it's first batch of PBYs from the US when we joined WW2, we actually sunk a Uboat with it when an absolute mad lad almost landed at the damn thing, the brazilian PBYs were really useful to closing up the south atlantic for german shipping and submarines.
But after the war the brazilian airforce saw itself full of PBYs and came up with a really nice way to use them, the PBYs became the bridges that connected the Amazon to Brazil, they would land on the amazon river and deliver medicine, food, medical evacuation and so on, connecting many of previously uncontacted tribes of the amazon in to actual Brazil, and intensified the process of connect the Modern, urban and gigantic Brazil to those tiny tribes in the middle of the forrest, cause if you got a wide enough river and a crazy enough pilot, you just got yourself the first realiable way to constantly supplying the amazon. Keep in mind that there are no railways there (we tried but nature fought back, such a bitch), and barely any roads(to this day, again, nature fought back) so the PBY played a important role in unitying the brazilian indigenous population of the Amazon into the brazilian society.
(Sorry for any english mistakes, I'm not a native.)

My favorite mission from World at War. The soundtrack and the intense action really made it memorable. Catalinas are a top aircraft for me as well. My favorite story is a PBY defying orders to not land in the open ocean and picking up 56 sailors from the USS Indianapolis by tying some of them to the wings. The Catalina stayed in the water until a destroyer escort came to pick them all up.

I always thought this mission was way cooler than the AC130 mission in COD4. Instead of bombing insurgents who don’t stand a chance, you’re flying a propeller plane against a conventional army and each hit you take makes your glass cannon of a plane more and more porous as the mission goes on. The first time you play this mission you’re not even sure if your guys(including the player character) are gonna live through it
Also Zakhaev and Al Asad did nothing wrong

With a correct timing between when to fire at the PT boats and when to rescue the sailors, it is still possible to beat the mission on Veteran without too many issues.

I can't wait to see content about real planes from Ash Arms.
The game Ash Arms (アッシュアームズ) includes personification of WW2 planes and tanks. This game have many reference to WW2, some planes like Ju87 (who mentions Rudel and his crew: Erwin Hentschel, Ernst Gadermann, Rothmann, Ernst-August Niermann, Alfred Scharnowski), Me262, Bf110G, Fw190D have references to pilots (Bf110G from Ash Arms, according to victories making on her tail, belongs to Martin Becker, but has some reference to Heinz Schnaufer in her personality; Fw190D refers to Heinz Sachsenberg and Hubertus von Bonin etc). They even kept insignia of Staffel, tank divisions. Great gam that deserves your attention. Also I can recommend Milihime Taisen (ミリ姫大戦). This is game (now no longer in service) about genderswapped WW2 tank division commanders, military leaders, snipers and other soldiers.
Speaking of Ash Arms, I can help with translating characters' quotes, finding historical references to pilots and in-game sprites of them.

Love this mission; best plane-related gameplay I have ever played in my life.
Also, as a submarine and submarine history enthusiast, really appreciate your comments and mention on US submarines and US trade interdiction warfare in the Pacific. Though not as well-known and regarded as the Kriegsmarine submarines in the Atlantic, USN submarines pulled off equally, if not more, fabulous and brave fight in the Pacific against IJN warships and Japanese empire merchant ships. US submarine force in the pacific was truly the most successful submarine unit by far, which sunk 54% of the total ship tonnage (including merchant and warship) Japan lost throughout the entire war. Unlike German submarines, which basically needed to rely on their own against the US and Britain's consolidated anti-sub and escort efforts, American submarines had all the support they could get from Army coast watches, surface fleets, and aviation forces from all military branches (which definitely included these Catalina black cats, they were the eyes and ears of the submarines), etc. It was not the superior technology or numbers of the US submarines themselves, but the joint operations and efforts of all the US military branches and units that could participate in any way or form that resulted in the impressive successes the US submarine forces scored.

I hoped you would play this mission, when I heard how much you love aircraft.
Honestly all of WAW is awesome. In my opinion the American campaign feels like it’s more story driven while the Russian campaign shows more camaraderie. Here’s why like in the video going through the American campaign and how they talked about how hellish it was makes it feel a tad more immersive especially if you have knowledge of the Island hopping campaign. A lot of Marines became recipients of the MOH because of this and the crazy things they did, so the fact that you feel like you are constantly outnumbered and it’s really up to you to do some crazy shit in order to help your squad is feels accurate. While the Russian campaign bar Vendetta do you feel like if you fuck up your gonna die as you had a shit ton of fellow Russians pushing with you backing you up. Yes the Marines deployed a lot of forces but the Japanese on every island outnumbered them and fortified. The only way the Marines won was when us was a 90% casualty rate of the Japanese forces with most of the Japanese soldiers being killed.
Also, my dad looked at the aircraft carrier and was like no that’s accurate just by looking at the island. He was a Navy Corpsman and worked on aircraft carriers.

The carrier they show is from the 1960s. However, several WW2 carriers were updated to the 1960s standard to use jet aircraft, so it's possible that the developers actually did use a WW2 carrier but in the wrong configuration.

At 9:22 you said Washington's engagement with kirishima at Guadalcanal was the last surface engagement of capital ships. That's not true the last battleship on battleship engagement was between the two fusos and the standard class Battleships (7 out of 8 iirc were survivors of pearl harbor) in the battle of the surigao strait 1944. And even before that the Battle of the north sea against HMS duke of York and scharnhorst had already taken place
