  • Ever since getting into guitar about a year and a half ago. I've always been fascinated by Kurt Cobain's tone. One of these tones in particular sounds like an engine to me. So I've built a guitar pedal to completely replicate it. Hope you dig it!

    It has always happened to me in several nirvana songs, like dive, the sound of the guitar gives me the sensation of being in some kind of factory/industry, an engine, and with this video I felt totally identified

      And if he comes out with a version of this that has a third knob that can control a sound that replicates the Quad reverb with three of the tubes blown out and only one working, This will be the #1 pedal of 2023

    Kurt had a Fender twin amp but with some tubes or caps going out and it made a unique natural fuzz/distortion tone that he loved and used it on the in utero album.

    This pedal you created is unreal…it sounds so good seriously. I prefer your engine pedal way over the super fuzz it just has that sound. Very well done! Thanks for creating it.

    Love this. I hope you will put "The Engine" pedal schematics out. I have always been trying to find how to replicate Kurt Cobains In Utero / home recordings sound in a pedal box. There is nobody except you on the internet that talks about it. I just always wanted to build pedal to duplicate it, but never succeded...

    • @PhiberOptik1979
      @PhiberOptik1979 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      I don't know if he'll put out schematics but i'm certainly going to buy one when he makes his run of them. I am a lifelong fan of Nirvana. I bought the cassette the day it came out so I am excited about this pedal. You can replicate almost anything with plugins in a DAW but i can't get this "engine" sound he is describing. I know exactly what he means! My personal guitar tone was based around the Bleach sound. raw and sounds like it wants to hack you up. i have an in utero sound too but it's not that accurate and it's missing that "engine" sound.

    • @notgringe2574
      @notgringe2574 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@PhiberOptik1979 Plugins can do everything, but I want that in one compatible box. I would buy it too, but because it is handmade, I think it will be higher than my price range. I buy almost everything on guitar from secondhands or make it myself, lmao. I made a clone of Sansamp Classic, because original is very pricey for me. And because its not very reliable circuit I have a backup Behringer GDI21 V-Tone in case accident on stage. Behringer GDI21 V-Tone, that is basically clone of Sansamp GT2...

    • @PhiberOptik1979
      @PhiberOptik1979 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@notgringe2574 I'm in the same boat with the price range. fixed income. But we'll see how he prices it. it is handmade, but also not professionally done, admittedly like he said in the video so they could have issues too. The price has to be right but I would definitely like one of these!

    • @DefconMaster
      @DefconMaster 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@notgringe2574 Did you make a PCB for your Sansamp Classic clone or build it on vero or perfboard? I don't think it's an inherently unreliable circuit but if you built it on perf or vero the offboard wiring for the DIP switch is an absolute nightmare and a source of all sorts or issues, I tried to build one that way the experience drove me to learn how to design PCBs in Eagle just so I wouldn't have to mess with it anymore. I still have a couple boards if you're interested in giving it another go.

    • @notgringe2574
      @notgringe2574 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@DefconMaster I designed my own PCB from schematics. My clone behaves like a vintage Sansamp Classic. Most issues come with the integrated chips that I use. Because I´m from europe we don´t have the originals chips that are in the Sansamp Classic, so I use TL-072 and TL-074, that imitates the original ones pretty well. But that comes with some problems: Feedback issues, no output. But I maybe figured out the problem because pedal haven't got any problem for a long time.

    You should do a video on how to start getting into nirvana tone.
    Maybe an in depth break down on all the aspects of your sound in one video with a focus on where to find what you use and maybe any cheaper alternatives that’ll get you close. I know your stuff is super focused on getting that exact tone, but i can’t really find any accurate content on TH-cam about getting a nirvana tone for a reasonable price (most videos I’ve found just give genius advice such as “buy as DS-1 and maybe use a Mustang”). You knock a lot of stock gear that’s supposed to be close to what Kurt would use so I wonder if you could dispel any myths and misconceptions you’ve found regarding tone.

    One of the most badass things about you man (of which there are many judging from your videos ) is that you inject so much joy and excitement into Kurt's life and music through your content, this hit me most when you played that shirt clip from Montage Of Heck. A clip that is full of sadness and despair, but then you are so excited about the sound kurt was able to make from his Quad and that's the part you focus on, cos yeah we all know Kurt had a super hard time, and so many people talk about that and somewhat romantaize it; but you man you get that of course, but you outline with joy and excitement what a fucking great ear he had for sound and music, and you take this and inspire the fuck out of me for doing it. Kurt was a badass, and an inspiration. But you man, your even more of a badass and even more of a inspiration to be honest, keep it up bro and much love from the Uk x

    Would definitely buy one or two of these if you did a limited run. Those pedals are amazing

    I can't wait to see that pedal with What More Can I Say and that early Fecal Matter version of Downer.

    I have a Peavey TKO 115 bass amp from the 80s, and when I put my squier strat with SD hotrails in the bridge through it with a boss ds1, I get a very similar sound. It’s sick, such a raw dirty sound.

    Your videos are great, man! Keep it up. It's hard to believe you only picked up the axe a couple of years ago. And now building pedals? Wow. Looks like it's time for a pedalboard soon!!! Cheers!

    I would be interested in one of these, especially if you add the quad reverb stuff to it for more tonal options. Awesome job!
