I used this when I played bass, it has a particular tone, but it's only 45w so it needed to be miked. It's a 6l6gc single push pull, mine have the original alnico speakers in it.

Your dedication to chasing the tone never ceases to amaze me. The amount of work you've done to perfectly recreate it, from building a custom guitar, reaching out and meeting people who knew and worked with Kurt, to finding stuff like this. You should be really proud man, this is extremely impressive, the quintessential source for anyone trying to recreate this tone. NirvanaGuitars does an amazing job as well, but this is next level.

I feel like the discovery made in this video perfectly explains the mystique of In Utero and reason why it still spellbinds guitarists three decades after its release: the extreme rarity of the equipment used on the record, whether by shrewd calculation or pure happenstance. It seems totally understandable that Kurt would settle on that particular amp with those particular speakers because, presumably, the rarity of those speakers meant that he had never heard his guitar sound like that before, so that had to be the sound of his last album. It’s the reason why we all still love the sound of this record, because of the rarity of that sound, because the sound isn’t easy to replicate, and very costly and impractical if you want to. It’s the reason why we haven’t heard a hundred other albums come out after In Utero that sound like In Utero, which in turn would have rendered the sound of the album wholly unremarkable.

Funny enough, yeah, speakers are the integral part for creating a sound.

As I'm sure many people know, there is a rumor, including a citation in the In Utero sheet music that Kurt used a rotovibe. At some point could you touch on this for us? I've been wanting to know since I was kid. I have a dunlop rotovibe in pieces in my closet you can have. It'll be my donation to the channel if you want to dive into it sometime. You'll just have to put it back together.

  • @MojoMedicineMan
    @MojoMedicineMan 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Well, if you're chasing that Nirvana tone from that album or specifically that amplifier?
Then, yes you're going to want the same speakers. However, the Utah brand speaker has been since the 50's.
The reason you perceive them to be "rare" is because most guitarists didn't care for them and CBS Fender was using whatever was available.
If you truly were a purist and wanted an upgraded speaker back then, you went with the JBL package like "Freddy King" and others. Fender was using Oxford, which were very good, CTS square magnets which were not popular and the giant magnets used to actually fall off the speaker frame during use. I witnessed this more than once and even at a concert where I assisted the guitarist and simply told him to just glue it back on, LoL.
The earlier CTS alnico speakers are much better sounding and can be found in earlier Fenders like the "Super Six" and "Super Reverb", these sound very good.
The guitarist I mentioned unplugged and used his back up amplifier instead for the rest of the gig and he was a Fender endorsed artist featured in Fender Frontline magazine at one time, I believe it was called, very long time ago?
While not being a fan of grunge in general, Cobain was a good song writer and I really enjoyed his covers of "The Meat Puppets" and "Leadbelly" songs.
I have a 12 inch 8 ohm orange label Utah that I removed from a 1971 Deluxe Reverb that I couldn't give away for twenty five years! It was replaced with a WeberVST C12N clone and that Deluxe Reverb came to life like you wouldn't believe! The Utah was stored in a box.
The WeberVST speaker even sounded better and more musical than an original cone Jensen C12N in it from the mid 1960's.
Utah's were also painted sparkle colors and used in organs without a label.
If you really want to find those burnt orange lable Fender labeled Utah speakers?
Then, I would start running ads or asking about them at guitar forums all over and you may just get lucky and find some older fellas that hung onto them and you can purchase them.
If you popularize this specific 16 ohm Utah in the Quad Reverb enough to justify having it cloned and reissued for people chasing that tone?
I would contact WeberVST speakers about it. If anyone could do it "accurately" it would be them. That set up stuff is not cheap though and demand has to be high.
Unless, you do the plug-in clone computer stuff type player.
Also, while those amplifier schematics are very similar they are not exactly the same.

  • @aaronward3602

Hey Aaron. To be clear, you're saying the orange label Utahs in the Quad are different from the orange labels found in Twins or other amps of the same era? Did you try them? It looks to me that the only difference, if there is one, is that the Quad speakers are 16 ohm and others are 8 ohm.
Any of these orange speakers look like near-unobtainium, but at least the 8 ohms can still be found in some old amps to try.
Or also, I found some 1976 Pyle speakers (who bought Utah) from a Fender amp. The metal basket looks the same as the Utahs in your amp.
Any ideas in your sleuthing if these options can make the same tone?
Last question, when you ran your signal through the Randall, was it also through the Boss pedal and Sansamp?

Dude, lmfao. So I grew up playing In Utero, siamese dream and houdini. 15? Years ago I went and tried two quad reverbs local to me with my fender jaguar, and a big muff deluxe. I bought the quad with the (at the time) less fancier looking Utah speakers because i thought it sounded better.
Lmao you wouldn't believe how many days I've sat around playing along so happy. I didn't even know Kurt used a quad reverb. Cool video dude

There are records that have true legendary tones.
Axis: Bold as Love- The Jimi Hendrix Experience.
    Revolver- The Beatles.
    In Utero- Nirvana.

People are barely getting turned on to Mid 70s Silverfaces. I bought my all original 1974 Quad with Utahs, 4 years ago for 500 bucks, 74 Twin for 250. I helped my friend buy an all original mint Super Six for 700 bucks. The market was booming... the prices are long gone.

Hey, don't say that this isn't an exciting video! It really is. I'm also kinda obsessed with the guitar sound on In Utero. It's really the only guitar sound that is above everything else. It sounds perfect in the mix. It pops right through everything and isn't drowned by the bass or drums. In Utero actually influenced me to get myself a SansAmp Classic, which has become my love! It does things I didn't even know were possible. I enjoy the third switch's ability to really push the low end into crunchy overdrive while not destroying the highs. I tend to use settings similar to Kurt's, but I turn presence drive and high slightly backwards and have the 8th switch turned off.
Anyway, this speaker thing is very cool. I've been trying to find nice speakers for ages because I can't stand the Eminence Red White and Blues 12" speaker that my vintage Music Man has in it. It sounds dreadful on its own, but it's okay if mixed with a cab that has a single V30. I'll try to find one or two of these myself!

There's so many videos about John Mayer & true bypass & "boutique" gear & all this tonal perfection. It's nice to see videos about tones that aren't so glamorous, trendy or pristine.

An IR pack of all your Nirvana sounds would be a nice collection. Nirvana were the reason I learnt the guitar. Looking forward to see more videos and the pack when it drops
