  • Calling someone a gobshite means something a bit different in Ireland. Irish comedian Jarlath Regan explains the subtle differences between an "eejit" and a "gobshite". Do you know a complete gobshite. Are you concerned someone in your life might be a dumb enough to be one. Share this clip with them or their friends.
Jarlath is on tour in 2023 and 2024 - he might be coming to your town or city. Tour dates are all here. linktr.ee/IrishmanAbroad
From the new standup special "Notions Eleven" filmed in Vicar Street on March 6th, 2020.
You can see Jarlath and guests at the monthly Irishman Abroad Online Comedy Club by signing up at www.patreon.com/irishmanabroad

@@jigserdotcom Yeah, as in 'Ha ha ha, he's an awful bollix'! I would have thought that 'spanner' is more an English expression?
An awful tool; the guy is just useless, gormless, waste of space.
I think you nailed it, eejits are harmless, but often the source of hilarity. Bollix is slightly more complex, it can be good or bad depending on context although the Definite Bad Bollix is more correctly ' a bollocks', (note the 'o' in the spelling) that doesn't leave much room for interpretation. A bollocks is most often an effing bollocks although a young lad that annoys you might well be referred to as 'a little bollix' too.. (possibly factual), clear so far?
Then there is 'langer' as in 'he's a right langer' which is a close relative of 'dickhead' although this is typically Cork'centric.
'Sure you're the whole man' would be ironic and might be uttered in conversation with a gobshite.
This is not an insult but I love it as an expression, nay homage to the beauty and allure of a particular woman, the grace she brings, that sparkle in her eyes.... 'sure, she'd put a horn on you that you could bate an ass out of a bog with!' And they say romance is dead.
Loving your 'stuff' and hoping to hear more of it.
      Respect, laughs and Pax.

@@annicecooper8105 Numpties is (as far as I'm aware) British Army slang for locals who are not of the armed forces and possibly stupid. A friend told me that after the Falklands 'campaign' the British forces 'in residence' kept referring to the locals as 'Numpties' and a general order went out to stop doing it from a visiting 'high heidyin' who thought it might be insulting and derrogatory? Go figure. So the same General returned a few months later, witnessing sone people carefully crossing a minefield, he enquired who in the blazes was doing that? The answer from the First Sargeant was sublime, eh, that would be the Not-Numpties sir. Love it! Ordered not to call them Numpties, they obeyed and called them 'Not-Numpties'. That's British Army humour, got to love it.
