  • Codex Astra Militarum is nearly here and there's been an image of some funky monkey Guardsmen floating around showing some really great regiments... the problem is I don't think those are going to be actual kits, so how do you make an Imperial Guard regiment your own? Let me know what you think in the comments!

Games Workshop need to be aware that this is potential lost revenue; people will look elsewhere for their guardsman model conversions, and buy far less as a result.

The thing is I don't think that it would be that hard for them to make conversion kits for your guard. Or maybe even make a guard kit that has tones of options in it. I mean most of the sculps already exist for these models we want we just need a way to buy them in bulk. Also one reason why guard isn't as populer is becuse : 1 they are not Space Marines, 2 they don't have much options. You ether go Cadian, Catachan or one of the other regemnts that still don't have enough models out for you to make a whole army out of them so you'll still need to buy Cadian or Catachan. If they made a converion kit for cadians to become Miasman Redcowls or a kit to make Catachan into Ork hunters, I'd buy a few of them. They'd work great with my steel legion. Instead I'm looking at buying the 5 pack snap fit Cadians and painting there clothes orange so I can have penal legion conscrips for cheap.

Problem is that the molds for the plastic are very expensive and other regiments as plastic models won't happen for that very reason. It's just a risk they aren't willing to take. Even the support for catachans has silently been reduced since 8th was released.
They sure as hell can throw everything at the wall when it comes to space marines, people will buy them, they are the poster boys of 40k after all. The guard always has been less popular than Marines and the Regiments other than Cadians and Catachans ALWAYS have been very niche and you woudl rarely see anyone who has some. If the demand would have been higher, maybe we would have plastic Steel Legion and Vostroyans by now (although i really wonder why they never revamped Vostroyans, i used to work as a retailer for them and Vostroyans were always sought after, albeit on a low level)
That being said, with the new regimental doctrines in the new Codex: IG, i wonder why they don't revamp their old Guard regiment. The plastic SoB announcement with definitive evidence, that they work on them together with a release date (2019) gives me a sliver of hope, that maybe, one day, we will see the old regiments of the IG again, in all their glory.

When you say regiments other than Cadians and Catachans have always been niche I'm wondering what is effect and what is cause here.
While, yes, Cadians are somewhat relatable as in they are just normal people, nothing too badass, I would expect for example Steel Legion to be at least as popular as Cadians if they weren't that expensive and made out of metal and very limited.
On the other hand, having to buy an upgrade-kit for every infantry unit I buy would make IG even more expensive than it already is. But does it even make a difference at this point? :D

    • @Donnerbalken28
      @Donnerbalken28 6 ปีที่แล้ว

I mean niche in the sense that the weren't popular with the majority of the playerbase, even way back in the day cadians and catachans were the best selling guys, a problem made worse when only cadians and catachan got plastic kits.

I used Anvil as well to make a WW2 themed desert rats Imperial Guard regiment. Zero complaints here, high quality casts, and even something as simple as a head swap onto a catachan body radically changed the look of the whole model once paint was applied. For an extra 10 quid per squad it was worth it for me.

Even then, a tiny bit of green stuff as a gap filler and it looks great. 10/10, will be using to customise my regular guard once I decide on a theme (Something with long coats, definitely...)

I'd settle for something like the Space Marine Chapter upgrade kits. Enough heads for a squad, maybe a few torsos and some add-ons unique to the regiment for standards or backpacks or heavy weapons, etc. Would still be a bit costly, but it'd give us maybe more of a chance.
    And yes, more fighting ladies!

    • @CommanderCool101

Upgrade kits? Fuck that - if you'd be satisfied sticking a Ushanka on Cadian armour and calling it a Valhallan, just buy third party headswaps. Once GW start producing milquetoast "upgrade kits" for guard, we'll be trapped using Cadian Shock Troopers and those ghastly-looking Catachan models FOREVER. AND we'll be paying £8 extra per squad just to make them uniform - who the hell wants that?
Better they just release a Steel Legion/Vostroyan dual-kit (a la the Skitarii Ranger/Vanguard kit) and call it a day. Their uniforms would be much more convincing to convert Tallarn, Mordian, Valhallan etc, instead of that hideous bubble-shoulder Cadian gear.

If you don't care about going to official GW events then there are lots of historic miniature ranges out there that make good guardsmen. A box of 48 Victrix Napoleonic infantry is £20 for instance. Don't bother replacing the muskets (since there are a ton of las-rifle variants anyway)-just find something to be used as special weapons and you're away :) Meridian miniatures are good for special weapons. Napoleonic cannons and late victorian Gatling guns work well for heavy weapons. Just one idea of using a historic range for 40k.

I like to think of Cadian's, as a sort of "Standard kit" for Guard. Most worlds would just get a standard Imperial kit, in perhaps their own colors. If the regiment I want to represent is specified as having a particular look I will try to find the models to bash into that look, but if I am just bulking out guard, I have no issue with Cadians with a different scheme as a home brew regiment.

All Games Workshop needs to do is pretty simple and would open so many possibilities. Run a bitz section on their website. They kinda do it with Forgeworld in terms of "upgrade packs", but being able to go to their website and order 10 chem dog heads, 10 catachan weapons and a box of 10 cadian troopers (for example) would result is so much new variation in army style.
The Guard army i want to kitbash would be so expensive and i'd just end up with hundreds of then useless bits i'd never be able to use due to half the model being missing. Kinda off putting.
The only thing i would say in regards to 3rd party bits - if you plan on going to any GW hosted event, their "event packs" state the models have to be made from GW items. Now, i dont know how much checking they do (did none at warhammer fest that i saw) but i wouldn't go overboard with changes otherwise you run the risk of getting noticed and not being able to play.

Hey Bud, responding to your request for 3rd party reviews.
Victoria Miniatures... Where do I begin. The only con I can think of is shipping costs from Down Under. It is pricey. Especially if you're ordering 10 parts for a squad, shipping is going to cost more than the items. Its a case of how much you value the individual feel the conversion give to your army, over spending money.
Now, the pros.... These sculpts are beautiful! I love them. I'm currently starting a Praetorian spearhead detachment using the pith helmet heads on tank crew. These heads fit in with the scale of Cadians quite nicely. The casts themselves, I would say rival Forgeworld. I've never ordered from FW, I am too poor to do that, but these heads are orgasmic on all the right levels.
I'm not sure if this is commonplace with Vic's company or not, but last time I ordered, I got some free goodies too. Namely, 4 female heads and a dress torso, meaning I have FREE parts, to convert a second tank commander as a commissar etc. (Officers peak cap being one of the heads included), who is also a woman!
I would recommend Victoria Miniatures 100%. Excellent quality and I'm yet to have a problem with them.
    Love you guys Vic

In my opinion, GW could learn a lot from how Anvil Industry does its Regiments range. By having a decent pool of interchangeable parts they create Massive scope for creating distinctive Regiments. GW could either do something similar with selected parts or just do what we've all been secretly hoping for which is make 10 trooper squad boxes & command squads of the all the Major Regiments (Tallarn, Mordians, Valhallan, Vostroyan, Steel Legion etc) whose parts would be all interchangeable so we could kitbash easily from official kits we can use in store without penalty. At the moment I use Anvil Industry, Mad Robot Miniatures and Victoria Miniatures as my primary alternative for human troops as those companies are serving an area GW is conspicuously ignoring. The Guard are supposed to be the most numerous of the Imperium's armed forces and yet they have so little options (in plastic). It is actually really disappointing that the lessons they learned when making the first plastic space marine box sets came (i.e. having sets with interchangeable parts encourages creativity) has been forgotten. I personally am tired of Catachans (models are ancient and ugly compared to their command squad) and of the Ubiquitous Cadians who are pretty much the Ultramarines of the Guard (thrust down your throat at every opportunity). Give us variety! There are dozens of different pattern Lasgun, let's see some! Give us some different legs and torsos and for the love of the Golden Throne so more dynamic poses (I would love some guardsmen in a bayonet charge!) Or even lying prone or enough kneeling legs in a box to have two ranks of firing troops! (Some bits sites sell kneeling legs for £2.99!)

I don't think it is too much to ask given Necromunda is a niche game and people would buy far more boxes for viable guard armies. Also, Necromunda gangs get Forgeworld head and weapon upgrade sets. A Mordian set with a Pith helmet upgrade sprue would mean you could make either Praetorians or Iron Guard from one set.

If you are in Europe, Kromlech and Spellcrow are pretty awesome providers of alternative stuff. Kromlech has a huge range for Orks, from longcoats, fat torsos and legs to full alternative Meganobz. I have bought from them in the past and it was well worth it.
Spellcrow has a really nice range for Chaos additions, like corrupted and god-specific Rhino doors, torsos, heads etc. I bought guitars (you read that right, GUITARS) and skin tabards from them for my Emperor's Children. I bought three guitars and 10 tabards and they sent me 10 additional tabards, five heads and 5 torsos from their "Noise Marine" range free of charge as a thank you for ordering.

Another thing you can do regarding changing cadians is to create a lore about your own regiment. Mine is that they were abandoned due to casualties being so high that it wasnt worth picking up the last few guardsmen. To represent this im using some of the geads from the gsc kit and filing down the ridges on the forehead

One major difference between Space Marines and Guards is that in the lore Space Marines use power armour based on the same basic patterns with some details individual to specific chapters while Guard regiments are described as a having huge variations in apperance. The modells should, in my opinion, represent that or the lore and fluff becomes basically pointless.

it would be cool if they did a focus on making a few boxes that let you choose different uniform types for your armies. so instead of a box being everything buy a box with a legs and bodies, then a set of heads and then the arms. imagine the variation with just 4 of each?
just a simple 3 or 4 base bodys and 2 sets of heads and 2 sets of weapons per kit and you have a massive amount of variation.
just standard mobile infantry (cadian basic), Greatcoats (like armageddon and valhallans), hench Savages (catachans and ork hunters) and Void born(enclosed space suit looking dudes)
then choose from infantry helmet, gas mask helmet, space helmets, fur hats, turbans, peaked hats or feathered hats (and of course no hats at all)
and an arm set from muscled, mobile infantry, Dress uniform, heavy coat or loose fabric
if each box had one body uniform, 2 different sets of heads and 2 sets of arms. it would be pretty easy to make these kits print on demand, or even sell the specs so people can print their own (i know, pie in the sky, but this is exactly the right product for them to dip the toes)

Bit of a recommendation for anyone looking for IG alternatives who stumbles across this:- Victioria miniatures are nice, esp if you want to add female guards to your army, scale wise come in about same size as elysians or kreig from FW, lot less flash though.
Anvil really nice, just ordered a few bits for test and conversion and will be ordering more, detailed minimal flashing.
Zing, good for random odds and sods, esp for vehicles, found them invaluable for getting rid of the church on the back of my baneblade and stormblade (a hatch, a vent and some plastic card), only negative is they come with big blocks of resin on some of the smaller items but it's nothing that can't be cut around
These are the ones I've used most for IG infantry and vehicle conversions to make a decent variation of regiments... oh as a side if you want a simple way to make trench coat guards a cadians field jacket can be extended down with green stuff to make a fairly decent trench coat (if you play in store and want to avoid being banned from using models cause of 3rd party parts)

I made an army of Fallen Dark Angels back in 6th Edition. I simply did a 50/50 mix of Chaos Space Marines and Dark Angels veterans. It turned out really nice for the wallet because no parts ended up being unusable given the specific theme of the army; but even more importantly, it looked really good simply because all of the parts were already interchangeable.
Right now I'm thinking of doing a Tanith First army for my wife (we're reading the Gaunt's Ghosts novels together). My wife is pretty set on using the strictly third party models off of Victoria Miniatures, but I've also considered just ordering a bunch of camo cloaks, and a few female heads and torsos off of Victoria Miniatures and just throwing them on Catachans.

If Guard ever get upgrade sprues for infantry I would cry in tears of joy. It'll never fucking happen but I would cry.
Just have Plastic Cadians, Plastic Catachans, and Plastic Kriegers and then you'd fill out the full range of soldiers in kevlar, soldiers in shirts and vests, and soldiers in fatigues.
Then put resin upgrade sprues on Forgeworld. Make it just like the Secutarii sprues. Take a Krieg, put a sword at his hip and change his head and now he's a Ventrillian Noble. Take a Catachan, give him a camo cloak and arms holding sniper gear and now he's a Tanith first-and-only. Take a Cadian, replace his arms and head and now he's a Tallarn.
Obviously I would object to paying another 40 fucking dollars for a conversion sprue but if it'll get GW to make Guard at least a little more modular I'd be very happy.

Seems fairly easy for the regular guardsmen: just start with the cadian kit, and swap the head for a 3rd party head with pith helmet (possibly the legs and/or torso as well, but then nothing much would be left of the GW model...). Haven’t found a good solution for the shoulder epaulettes yet though.

    @Axquirix 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Agreeing on the paint scheme discussion and that it doesn't make Cadian models not look like Cadians, but I think it's inverted for vehicles. Go look at the Wyvern on the webstore; it's done up in Valhallan colours and it looks so different to all the other vehicles, even the Hydra that it's 95% the same plastic as. I think that's why different colour Space Marines work and Guardsmen don't; vehicles and marines have very large flat surfaces on which the paint scheme is the primary defining aspect and they're primarily one colour; armour. Guardsmen meanwhile are smaller and more greebled models that are primarily at least two colours; flak jacket and fatigues, and then most will have boots or skin tone or even their guns in a different colour.
TBH I think the Genestealer Cults Acolytes box is enough to do Savlar chem-dogs as shown in that image. They wouldn't have exactly the right torsos but the head are good. And I think GW out to be capitalizing on that; it's literally just a regular Cadian squad with the headswaps from the Acolytes upgrade sprue included. They could easily sell upgrade sprues for other regiments; longcoat legs and headswaps for Miasman Redcowls, for example. Mordians are basically just one of the torsos from the Command squad, they could probably make a sprue of ten of that easily.

as we don't have that many gws stores here and none that you'd want to game in, the hobby is cheaper now than back in the all metal 80s, getting minis posted from the uk and sold by weight
get a 30ish infantry box from warlord games, perry or victrix, then add arms/guns, maybe headswaps; for gws bits, generally they come in packs off of ebay stores, the rest of my armies I build from mostly online UK independents (quicker and cheaper than USA), and of course Victoria minis

The Miasman Redcowl head is an Admech Ranger head.
The difference is that Space Marines have been fairly uniform from the start. There are variation by unit that are chapter specific, but by in large a space marine is a space marine. The major difference is the paint job and the chapter insignia. Imperial Guard on the other hand are very similar to old-hammer. Their look is entirely based around diverse real life cultures and looks. I personally always like the Cadians (the army I collected is Cadian), but I don't begrudge and fully support an expansion of regiment options. You really missed an important point regarding space marines, which is that there are many plastic kits for Space Wolves, Blood Angels, Dark Angels, as well as upgrade kits for other chapters, and the same doesn't exist for Imperial Guard. I suspect many people would be happy with some simple upgrade kits with different heads, cloaks and other bits to represent some unique Guard regiments. Wouldn't be useful for some regiments (eg Tallarn, Vostroyan), but would be a reasonable compromise at least.
