I really appreciate that the thumbnails show the finished product. So many hobby channels blur the results in their thumbnails, which tends to have the opposite effect than what they're going for. Thanks guy!
Yeah. I see some nice minis I go "oooh, I wanna watch that", I see some pixelated or blurred blob I go "f*ck off!" and never watch that video.
Yes! Spot on. Thanks, Guy!
Or I just skip to the end..
Preach
Agree with this.
LOVED watching this! We love a good army painting project and it's so rewarding to see all of those models standing in uniform when they are done. Great job Guy!
Pretty cool to see how quickly you painted one coat over another, and a white re-basecoat with limited bleed. Good work.
@@TheArmyPainter What caused the odd red dots in the spilled paint early in the video? Is that intended?
@@TheArmyPainterI’ll second that request. Were the ‘bits’ in Nuclear Sunrise an error?
@@ArchmageFel I think that came from pouring it back into the bottle after it spilled. Might have been something that settled on the pallette.
@@thelinsky2319exactly what i thought, seems fairly obvious
Something about the hard transition from "MEAT FOR THE GRINDER IN THE GEARS OF AN ENDLESS WAR" to "Hey everyone! Guy here! :D" made me laugh.
I think the mistake made pouring it back into the bottle was worse than the exploding nozzle incident. 🤣
That may have been where the spots came from :(
Ya seeing that hurt my soul
Love that you had the most bleak, grimdark intro I’ve seen in a painting vid followed with a very cheery “Hey everyone!” Also that battle report is gonna be a marvelously vibrant spectacle!
Personally, I find the speedpaints make a mild camouflage effect on the armor panels, which I think looks really good.
Agreed! The blotchiness on armor looks pretty good ngl.
You gotta love it when guy uses his grimdark voice
Finally! I'll paint a big target on my back again, but I am glad that you get to try out these paints! Hope to see them more as a tool in your Arsenal.
I really like the orange jumpsuit aesthetic for your penal guardsmen. I never thought you could do anything interesting with guards beside "insert historic army here" paintjobs,
glad you showed me otherwise.
There's honestly loads of Guard color schemes out there, both in official material and fan made.
Wow, that orange really pops! Layering a couple Speedpaints was a good call on this one.
I can't get over how good Guy's music is. His tunage is legit!
Can you be the narrator in the new warhammer show, you killed it with that intro, sounded real good
Yep that intro was sic
And then that contrasting happy Hi..
It felt like a cold shower.
@@ttaibe yeah it hit just as hard lol
I really appreciate the transparency about paint brands. It’s got to the point with speed paint that I don’t know if some hobby TH-camrs like them because it’s a good product or if they have a vested interest in showing them in a good light. Thanks for being honest and keeping your opinions objective.
We don’t pay for reviews. We DID hire three channels as consultants for their feedback in the development of the new colours and range but we’ve been extremely forthcoming about that. In their contract we specifically state that we were not hiring them to make content, we hired them as representatives of our great community :)
Pouring that paint back into the bottle was like every movie when the character is dying of thirst and pours their last drops of water or new found water all over their face spilling 90% of it.
Really liked the super clear disclaimer about the paints, there’s defo a lot of channels out there that aren’t that clear about what they’ve been sponsored to show.
The tonal whiplash I got from the introduction to the actual video-
Awesome. I love off-the-usual-box-art-color-schemes, which is why it was so hard for me to 'Sandstone' my Indomitus Necrons, but I couldn't get away from the bony color pallet. Guy has become _'the Man'._
So hyped for this video as soon as I saw the notification
Awesome video Guy, it's really appreciated, and I enjoyed watching it. I know that AP has said that with the new 2.0 formula, that if you let the paints dry for about 2 hours (variable depending on weather) they shouldn't re-activate at all any more. That being said, I obviously haven't had the chance to try them out myself yet, so watching this, and seeing them being used 'in the wild' so to speak is really helpful.
I don’t think Guy waited the recommended 2 hours 😂 but you can see how easy it was to apply a coat of white overtop. After two coats of white and Speedpaint should be covered for good.
@@TheArmyPainter Yeah those are certainly top tier. I can't wait to get my hands on some. Just wish I'd been able to pre-order them.
Good to see the formula hasn't changed much in the way the paint behaves. This technique is my go to now. The speed paint tells me where to add highlights which is my favorite part.
This was a creative colourscheme! Well done.
Awesome video. The models have turned out great. The orange is great but that gold is amazing. Hopefully you can test more of that gold on other things and see how it ages. Looking forward to the next video. Keep up the good work.
These are undoubtedly my favourite videos of yours. So informative and therapeutic
Testing the paints on the bases, finding which you like best, THEN RE-PRIMING THE BASES?! My god... it's so simple... WHY DIDNT I THINK OF THAT?! In my tiny brain, paint=forever so it's scary in that regard. But this is just flippin' smart work.
Ooh! I’ve just been getting started with mini painting using army painter’s starter kit and really been enjoying it. Definitely want to give these speed paints a try now!
The dropper bottle incident reminds me of my Lil incident with speed paint as well. We're the cap was loose and I shook the dang thing gushing a bit everywhere hahaha.
Those mini's turned out great, love the Commissar....Well done..👍
This is how I’ll paint my guardsmen, makes them very unique
I love the small lore you gave to them. Its real neat
NEW MIDWINTER MINIS LETS GO!
Wow-sticks and deep dark holes...great video!
These came out great, congrats! Thanks for some of the extra tips too, much appreciated! 😎👍
Extra thumbs up for reviewing paints that you paid for yourself.
Kudos.
I enjoyed this video! Sort of a return to form and I appreciate it!
I love speedpaints so much. With a white primer they are so fun to paitn with. You certainly need some regular paints along site depening on what you are painting.
Love those old mugshots in the introduction. Great touch!
Thanks for showing us the mistakes you make too, Guy. You are human after all!
I love seeing how creative the community has been with Guard since the "Cadia Stands" box came out
Also, the heavy weapon team is included in the start collecting box so that you can run it as part of the squad
that Commisar is genuinely gorgeous :D that purple is the best color of them all
Those speed paints are great I didn't know they had a metalic now. With the little pack of them I was making a bright gold whith zealot yellow by mixing it with vallejo silver but maby I need to check them again for the new colors
I have only used speed paint 1.0 but they can really pop if done over a colored undercoat. I wanted to paint a librarian with the blue armor so i based the model in purple, zenithaled it in teal, then a drybrush of white. When High Lord Blue went over it, it really looked good
I've found it super helpful to prime and paint my speedpaint lids with the colour. It shows the range of colour really well due to the texture on the lids.
Genius!
I recently started using some of these paints, and I've found that if you do a clean base coat of the individual colours you want then apply the relevant speed paint over the top you can actually get some nice effects. For instance I painted my vampire/zombie dragon things wings red then highlighted, t
hen used speed paint red over the top and it really popped.gave loads of depth and amped up up vibrancy of the colours. Hope this was useful. And by the way, love your stuff.
I've also burst open my army painter bottles like that before, nice to see a hobby hero go through the same struggles
That commissar looks awesome … and a great tip on the paint bottles!
I have had a guard army sitting in a case primed white for like 2 years. Now I have a scheme, thanks Guy ♡
Awesome video and I love the superglue to plastic cups idea for painting the models.
6:38 i actually did this to myself the other night. It wasnt army painter but a random paint i wanted to try from a game store after a night shift. Shake it up, heard a ball inside and was like 'oh thats cool!'. Went to squeeze... nothing. I had let it sit for a long time (depression is fun, get therapy yall), so i figured it was a little gunked and just needed some help. I squeezed harder and ended up painting my palette, the wall, my pants, and my pride. Wish i saw this earlier 😅
That's such an amazing color scheme! Love these
Finally Deathmatch returns!
Great video, love the colours.
They look pretty good in orange def the best way to paint Cadians.
Thanks for the video!! More speed painting videos please 😊
Honestly if you haven't already I'd highly recommend base coating in pink to paint orange. It gives one of the best, vibrant oranges I've seen in a long time. Plus, you usually don't need to do the extra layers of orange with it.
how light or dark does the pink have to be?
@@TEPMARMYif you’re thinking pink horror pink, it’s too bright. A good medium purple. Hot pink is too bright
@@TEPMARMY depends on the exact shade of orange/yellow you are going for and how vibrant you want it to be. A carnation pink is generally a good starting point, but I've even done a hot pink for a really bright blood orange. Goobertown Hobbies has a video one it if you want to check it out
@@MrCMaccc Thanks for the heads-up!
Love your videos.
Keep up the amazing work
that blue for the plasma pistol is amazing
Nice result! 👍😄👏
I have the original plastic inperial guard box set from the 80's and even back then i made a " dirty dozen " inspired penal battalion squad and used orange for their uniforms too.
Those are great colors. Your review is a happy surprise. I like army painter speed paints because they are much cheaper than Citadel and readily available at my local shop.
*MEAT FOR THE GRINDER IN THE GEARS OF AN ENDLESS WAR*
.....
"Hey everyone! Guy here :D"
I died
I've found contrast/speed paints through an airbrush come out really well. It's my go to for any big models with wings.
"Meat for the grinder in the gears of an endless war... Hey everyone, Guy here!" That was quiet the juxtaposition in tones there for the opening : D Loving that paint scheme.
Definitely gonna use this video when i paint gsc, thanks Guy!
Looks great. can't wait for that battle report!
Love the paint scheme!
I love how you did that electric effect on the sword! So simple, but the results were fantastic. I gotta give that a try
oooh! lovely Velvet underground callout there, Guy!
Very interesting challenge. Thanks! Also, thanks for the ball bearing tip.
Thank you!
Love that the commissar looks like he would fit in well with the Ork army you have Guy, lol
Great video, as always! I personally love Speedpaints by AP, I have never gotten models painted quicker, especially when combined with a Slapchop underpainting. I will check out the Speedpaints 2.0 package, since almost every color from 1.0 was very good but somewhat limited in color palette variety.
OMG, they look like the security guards from ALien Vs Predator 2 game! Nostalgia just kicked in!
wowow I love that purple!
Dont think we missed that Velvet Underground reference guy!
These guys look great. The orange is a really unique color, very eye-catching, and great idea with the barcode insignia.
I imagine when you do the lemans russ, In order to sell it as a penal legion you could 'weld' the hatches shut or something similar, like they're ensuring the crew don't bail out at the first sign of trouble.
If I were doing a force like this, I'd be tempted to do variant colors on a few of the armor panels and lasguns. I like the idea that their equipment tends to be picked up and re-used from battlefield casualties, so gear of different shades would end up cobbled together. I'm imagining orange-suited prisoners being herded directly from the prison ship, to the heaps of salvaged equipment, to the battlefield.
Nice, I will be stealing that dayglo orange recipe. Looking forward to seeing the tank getting painted up.
Excellent stuff! I’ve fancied a penal squad or two for some years now, think this is what I’ll do for the unpainted older Cadians I have sitting untouched. Can’t wait to see what you do with the Russ!
Very cool to see. Also, nice Velvet Underground reference.
Just painted some space marines! They looked good thanks to your speed painting video on them!
I’m a firm believer in not drilling lasguns. I’m sure their barrel ends with a lens.
Love the paint scheme! 👍
god tier content
thanks doc
I join you in having exploded a Speed Paint with my impatience. Good of you to share with the world. If it's stuck, tip it back and try again.
That Caribbean Ocean paint over white is pure magic. Hate doing plasma!
How you did the commissar is exactly how I use my speedpaints. Adding some white or off white to the regular speedpaint colour creates the perfect highlights to give your paint job that extra pop.
A bit of weathering with a sponge and those blotchy armor panels would've looked great and worn!
Thank you , Guy .
🐺
Omg I just got done doing the same combo of colors for the fatigues and thought of it on my own! I wanted to check your video for inspiration on the armor! Great minds think alike :)
Great job on these. Bright orange always scares me. :D
Those Guardsmen look great, it's a very cool and unusual colour scheme! Also, happy to hear I'm not the only one to have accidentally squirted paint all over.
Personally not a fan of Army Painter paints as a whole, and I admire your perseverance trying all these different painting techniques out, but I think this only solidifies how counterproductive "speed paints" can be generally speaking. Great video, always good seeing people's honest takes. Look forward to seeing these projects duke it out in the arena!
why do I have a feeling you have just invented another iconic paint scheme like your sandcrons.... AS usual. awesome work! very much looking forward to the batrep.
Very nice thanks for the info and video
Gun Metal, probably already mentioned, is already a color in the AP range. And it's pretty good, a regular gun metal paint.
I like this tutorial, by the way, and am just wondering if it would have been better to do your black paints, touch up mistakes with white, then go in with your orange brew :)
Great stuff friend 👏 👍
Such a great, unique Idea! The gold paint looked much better on the "general guy"
thanks for telling us how the nozzle incident happens. happened to me the other day too.
Great video!
Shared on Twitter! Thanks, Guy!
Cool stuff!
