I have a theory. It may seem foolish to make such a big theory out of a series like this, but I'm a very theory-motivated person and I just had to share what I put together with the world.
I call it, "The Stars Look Back At You".
(I would make a video about this theory for less annoyance, but my mom won't let me.)
It all starts with The Eyes Of The Universe, or just Eyes for short. He seems to be protecting Skid and Pump from the dangers of their neighborhood.
The two are pure, naive, too brave for their own good, and quite easy to manipulate. The world around them is filled to the brim with people with dark intentions, people or things that could easily kill them, and even demons.
The "Red Man" from the first episode was about to murder Skid's mom, and probably him later. Skid's grandmother is a legit zombie. Frank sells drugs and kidnaps people. Moloch is a flat-out demon. The burglars are burglars, and chances are, they probably have weapons hidden somewhere. The clown guy also kidnaps people, and may or may not have an actual cult. Eyes himself is an eldritch abomination. The "Candy Dealer" may have been said to give out actual sugar, but that was probably some kind of drug, seeing as one of the cops says "That's how I feel when I'm smoking". Monster is not only a manipulative, well, monster, but also eats people.
Skid and Pump are childish enough to get tricked left and right, and never learn their lesson about not trusting random people they meet. But there's a reason they haven't; Even when they get manipulated, they don't actually get in trouble, let alone hurt.
The manipulative people actually like their presence. The people that could kill them don't, either out of confusion or a liking for them. Neither do the demons.
No-one wants to hurt them, and those that do suffer punishments afterwards.
The bullies are really the only ones we've actually seen harm the two, even if it wasn't nearly severe. And they get hypnotized by Eyes near the end of that very episode.
"The Stranger" was close to doing who-knows-what to them, but the two were almost immediately dragged out of that situation by Eyes, only to so easily become friends with him. He ends up running over "Stranger" (as seen in 5:19), and I assume that killed the guy.
Moloch was close to harming the two as well, but that didn't go as planned...
Look at 14:15. As you can see, Pump's eyes are cyan.
Notice how in The Stars, his eyes were that very same color at one point, just after they met Eyes?
*I think the stars are helping.*
We've seen Dexter get possessed by Moloch earlier in Unwanted Guest, yet Skid says that it's not him, solely based on looks. This would make sense; He's just a kid, he never got hypnotized, he dosen't know about possession.
But Pump _does_ know, and he tries to convince Skid that the monster in front of them IS infact Moloch, so that Skid could run away as "Pump" would be able to deal with it himself. Yet, because of Skid's everlasting bravery when it comes to demons, he's absolutely convinced that this _isn't_ Moloch.
So, Pump decides to do the unthinkable; He outsmarts the demon.
I'm sure Pump knows that demons can spin their heads around from horror movies, but it's possible that proving that it was Moloch wasn't the intention.
Perhaps he knew that Moloch was possessing a human, and tricking the demon into killing itself would not only get the two and Lila out of danger, but, because of death reasons, would also send it back to where it belongs; Hell.
But this isn't Pump that's doing this; Due to his eyes being cyan, I believe that Eyes is controlling him to save both him and Skid, as well as his mother, from Moloch. And it worked, too.
These punishments have a common theme; They all trace back to Eyes.
Remember how Eyes always says to "Look at the stars"? I don't think he was only talking to the kids, but also the viewers.
Two large, bright stars appear rather frequently in the sky in eps 3 and 4, whenever the two kids are either on screen or near where the screen is focusing. They even appear in the credits, watching over the two children as they run happily together.
Weirdly, they also appear at the beginning of The Stars, specifically when Pump arrives. Either that's some clever foreshadowing, or perhaps something deeper.
They also appeared behind the bullies at 4:14. It makes sense why Eyes went straight for them now; The stars were watching them back the whole time.
One more instance of those stars appearing in this episode is at the end. Just as Skid's mom is pleasantly surprised at Pump mentioning the stars, those two specific stars in the sky wink at the camera. I believe this is either some kind of 4th wall break, or they're just winking at Pump, after what he's seen. Credits to Visjex for mentioning this to me in the replies of my first post of this comment on a different video.
The kids also seem more aware in ep 4 than they have ever been. They take Happy seriously when he gets angry, they acknowledge danger and know how to deal with it, and they also know about possession and also that apparently Eyes can suck people's souls.
It's heavily implied that Happy's possessed by Dexter, who has a killing addiction that can drive him insane if he doesn't kill something within a certain amount of time.
It's implied due to the cold and some decorations that this takes place in November. Ep 3 happened back in June, but Happy was bought and possessed(because his eyes turn the same as they are in ep 4 at the end of ep 3) during ep 3, meaning he's been trying to kill these kids for 5(or less) MONTHS NOW, but to no avail. And I think I know why, and it's not what you think.
Let's backtrack to just after ep 3, when the kids seemingly had no idea about possession and didn't take things as seriously as they now are.
What if Eyes has been helping them survive the doll for most of that time between eps 3 and 4? It would explain why they were giving him attention via merch despite him not making a return in this episode.
Surely he would know the doll is possessed. I mean, his eyes _are_ the stars, after all. So, he probably knew the doll was possessed, and started teaching the kids about possession so they'd put two and two together and know what they're up against. He probably used Moloch as an example, explaining how Skid now knows Moloch can possess people. Pump caught on pretty quickly about the reason they're being taught this stuff, which is why he tells Skid that Happy was possessed, but Skid probably thought it was just a fun topic to talk about, which explains why he drew himself, Pump, and probably Happy, all three possessed.
Maybe Eyes also knew that the doll would most likely try to kill the kids, so he's been teaching them to fend for themselves in case of times when he isn't able to help, like if they're inside and away from windows, making Eyes unable to see that they're in danger. They've definitely learned a thing or two about self-defense, since they take Happy's argument seriously, were the ones to push him into the oven, and also the way Skid said "We can deal with it, mom. It's just a doll."
But even if they knew he was gonna hurt them (they were acting like it, anyway), they still stuck around him until he gets agressive and taunted him when he DID. This may be a bit of a stretch, but remember the art on the shirt about Eyes? The kids were basically looking right at him, and I'm pretty sure they knew he was there. Watching them to make sure they don't get hurt.
Maybe they don't care about Happy's malicious intentions because they KNOW what's going to happen to him if he actually lays a finger on them. They don't care about getting hurt, because they know that a certain friend is always there to protect them.

Now, for the big question; Why? Why does Eyes protect them, and ONLY them? Well, before we get into that, I'm going to tell you about Skid's family, as one of Skid's family members plays a very significant role later in the theory. Credits to CodFish for the video that let me know of this, as linked here: th-cam.com/video/VEjYYxwOwLA/w-d-xo.html
Throughout the episodes, since the very beginning, there are pictures around the house. I want to focus on the pictures in these moments; 1:11 and 9:45. The father's face isn't shown in either of the frames, either because its just out of view, or crossed out. He always seems to have a ring on his finger, keep this in mind. On the shelf at 9:45, there's a robe, a mask, and a necklace. In the Newgrounds ending of Unwanted Guest, a cult is shown that wears these items. It's also important to note that 1, they are seen looking into the hole where Eyes reaches through in the second episode, and 2, that a large picture of someone with a ring is in that same frame, put in place as if it's important.
Someone with a ring. Where have we seen that?
That's right. Skid's father may just be the original leader of the cult. Seeing as they peek into the hole in the Newgrounds ending, and that a picture of Eyes is in the background at 4:31, it's safe to assume that he's what this cult worships. Keep this in mind.
Lila probably found out about her husband's cult one way or another, and divorced him, removing his face from pictures and putting things relating to him in the attic, doing all she can to forget.
As seen at 1:09 in the corner, he's probably dead now, so the rest of the cult put a big picture of him on the wall, in memory of him. They wanted a new leader, and they found one; The clown.
If Skid's father was the leader of the cult, as CodFish stated, maybe that explains the reason that Skid isn't afraid of anything other than Stranger (who we will get into later).
Perhaps the father took Skid through all sorts of horrifying situations, probably having to do with the cult one way or another, and Skid's bravery built up over time because of that. Skid would then do fun, "spooky" things with Pump that would scare Pump at first. But, like Skid's situation, the bravery builds up, and that's why Pump's barely afraid of anything either. This may also explain how he and Pump so professionally summon Moloch in the first episode; Skid learnt it from his dad, and then taught it to Pump for the spooks.
As for why he's afraid of Stranger? Well, I am going to take a guess that he's Roy's uncle for this theory.
Roy said that his uncle takes him to the abandoned house. It's unknown what they do in there, but I assume it's bad, seeing the other bullies' reactions, and I also assume it's conducted by the uncle.
Since Skid's dad's cult does their stuff there too, perhaps Roy's uncle and Skid's dad met through being in the same building. Skid's dad would notice the things that Roy and his uncle would do. When including Skid in things he doesn't know is cult activity, he warns Skid about the things Roy's uncle does, and that's why Skid's scared of Stranger, and only him. Skid would then tell Pump about it, making Pump also only afraid of Stranger.
Furthermore, if the theory of Skid's father being the leader is correct, then Eyes possibly could have known that the leader and Skid are blood-related, seeing as Eyes IS an eldritch abomination that probably knows way more than one would think. This relation may be why he not only protects both Skid and Pump, but this also may explain why Skid was never hypnotized by Eyes, but everyone else _was;_ Perhaps he didn't want to hypnotize Skid, seeing as the cult leader was his father.
But what about Pump, you ask?
Well, I think I might know the answer to that too. And unfortunately, it involves Pump petting his soul sucked.
See, at 28:58, there's a code. Put it together and you get sent to the same scene with words Happy wrote while progressively going insane. Solve a hidden code in _that,_ and you're sent to a book written in cursive in another language, which also has a symbol Pelo posted in his "dad lore" tweet. A translation of said book was done in a community post by CGS, and is roughly translated but does indeed make sense.
Here's a paragraph from the translation:
"This pile he has filled with the soul can see through the eye of the vessel and with the perimiuo that it may shine in the sky in the light of the tenth day, by the incarnate night it is on the way to at every place in this kingdom he called the Earth."
Considering Eyes calling the kids "PILES of flesh", chances are this could either be talking about Pump or Skid. I believe it's Pump, because the second half of the sentence calls said "pile" a "vessel". Think back to Pump getting possessed for their safety.
Further more, relations between Pump and soul-sucking were foreshadowed TWICE at 17:22 and 18:19. All of this added up leads to a clear conclusion that Pump will be Eyes' permanent vessel at some point.
I don't know why it's Pump specifically chosen to be the vessel, but I think it's because he's the best friend of the son of the leader.
      And as for why in general, here's a sentence from the second-to-last paragraph in the translation from earlier;
"My body was paralyzed, my mind was weakened, and my life was short, I saw the *eternal pain of this creature* and the pain."
Keep the phrase I bolded in mind.
Another important part of this is that whenever Eyes talks, another voice can be heard behind his own, saying things like "help", "it hurts", stuff like that.
As much as I want to explain what this hints towards myself, I think my brother's explanation summarizes it pretty well:
"I still think the human souls from the people Eyes has eaten are inside him, and thats what the pain is. Those souls are collectively in agony."
Of course, a good way to escape this would just be to find another body without all these souls in it. What better person to choose than the closest non-relative of your future disciple?
