This becomes so much funnier when you think about the moment in 6 when Roman is talking about the bad guys and after comparing Brian to the femme fatale on the enemy team, he says, "We all know that Brian is the prettiest Blonde around" Me and my partner love this movie because of its massive homoerotic undertones. I think the read is accurate and completely unintentional. Paul Walker was just such a beautiful perfect specimen that he's one of those people that a lot of straight guys would say "If I was drunk enough..." about. He just kind of awakens any latent homoerotic tendencies. If you listen to the director's commentary or some of the behind the scenes featurettes for the first few movies, the directors, Tyrese, and others remark constantly about how beautiful Paul was. So you can't help but wonder if there was some amount of real world subconscious attraction they had towards him that manifested itself in the direction and performances.
This statement is hilarious "a lot of straight guys would say "if i was drunk enough." A str8 guy is not going to mess around with another man weather drunk or not. They think sleeping with women absolves them of, what a lot consider, the "stain" of homosexuality but in all aspects; they're gay as hell. Even the idolization of a woman is to be despised by men. Just look at what the Romans did to Cleopatra. She was an intelligent woman, an incredibly smart strategist who was refined and charming to the point that despite.her more homely appearance she made emperor's swoon for her. She brought about a golden age to Egypt under her rule, but men found this so unacceptable they simply spread propaganda that depicted her as a charlatan who bewitched and slept with men. That was her only power, that the only reason she was so desired was due to her appearance, only now do we know the truth. It has never been about a woman "reaching the same achievements/talents" of men to receive respect. Nope. Men just be gay af for each other. as a car enthusiast, this is just really the representation us car people need. We purposely clean our cars, modify them, make them look cool just so other men see and appreciate it. Women are meh, but you can really form connections with other car guys as a result. Even in car meets, it's guys with the same passion, loving each other's creation.
I read a post that said "men tend to reserve everything related to love for other men and leave only sex for women" and this reminded me of that, another great essay Ben!
you didn't mention the part where brian just opens the ferrari implying that it was unlocked all the time and roman did all the punching the window stuff just to show brian his strength and abs
This is my new favorite genre of storytelling lol the recontextualized homoerotic subtext of all the great and mediocre stories that are only worth watching because someone made them gay for me. It's like Postmodern Jukebox making a One Direction song something worth listening to. lol
Now that I'm gay, they should have brought Verone back to the series. That look he gives them at the end when he's caught. They even discuss between themselves if he'll get out. He wants their asses, literally. Honestly the way you narrate this movie, you made me remember how great and fun this movie was. They definitely had chemistry Oh and it should be To Bi to Curious
No i don’t believe this theory it’s common knowledge that FF2 was supposed to have Vin Diesel but he turned it down and Roman was his replacement his story was never originally planned his basically the Ewok of the fast and furious franchise Giving the ff writers a bit too much credit LOL
Can't believe you made this whole video a year ago just for me specifically to watch right now and feel the most validated I've ever felt. Little girl me watching this on vhs in the den 2 inches from the box tv feels incredible right now.
SO, when this movie came to dvd, a friend and I watched it together laying on the floor. I feel like we were under a blanket together, but I have no idea if the memory is the way things really happened! Like, for somereason the memory feels really romantic, but it involves a dude. I wonder if the movie and its bi undercurrent somehow became... the truth of the situation while I watched it. WTF!?
Or, you might just be not straight 🤷 which in no way is meant to be offensive. But if you remember it that way, it might be more about how YOU remember it. Be you!
This reading definitely improves the film a lot. Honestly, writers use romantic language a lot when they’re trying to inform the viewers that a friendship is important, which leads to a lot of friendships in fiction being queer coded even when it’s clear it wasn’t intentional at all. This isn’t the case here at all though! It’s impossible for this subtext not to be 100% intentional. In any case, great video, subscribed.
Looks like a lot of you guys took this satirical reading way too seriously. A lot of action movies that have the best friend trope can be read as this. Heck, IRL even straight guys can have silly homoerotic moments if they're good enough friends
@@greekjohn1998 it when the character(s) are expressed as queer ( bi, gay, lesbian, pan, ect) through subtext or action without being explicit told so ( ex: Disney villains and flamboyant characters ).
It's a great candidate. Stucky is such a big fandom so Bucky acting super possessive over Steve's legacy and honestly jealous about Falcon's connection to Steve could be so juicy. The story could be about Steve's ex Bucky mourning his death while grieving that in the end Steve chose her. His level of angst in the show could definitely be justified as well as his hostility towards Falcon. He lost everything in a day but yet he keeps seeing Steve everywhere (posters, tv, etc...). His only real tangible connection to Steve is now his legacy. Falcon is grieving his friend and as a normal friend he doesn't really understand how deep Bucky's grief goes so he can't empathize and unknowingly hurts Bucky with his insistence that he should get over it. In time as Falcon gets to know Bucky he realizes that he's not just being a douche and lashing out for the sake of it and comes to want to help Bucky. Hurt/Comfort in other words. It doesn't have to be romantic. Bucky could be a queer man and Falcon just a good friend but if you push a little bit I can see Falcon developing a 'deep affection'. He's married so he can't do anything about it but the angst level could be worth it for some. A one sided forbidden love. Or maybe later Bucky likes him back but it's still a forbidden love. Much potential. Maybe if they use the blonde Captain America Bucky can bond with him too. Potential triangle? It's 2am so idk if I'm just rambling but my mind feels active. Hope I make sense.
I kind of hope that doesn't happen, only because the videos would become more and more of a stretch, to the point where it would take credibility away from the ones where the analysis actually made sense. Example: Commentary youtubers who post videos titled "This is the dumbest/weirdest movie of all time" every week.
This brings a lot more context to the American Dad episode. For those who haven’t watched it, they come across a first draft script for the next F&F film, and find it has pages and pages of explicit gay sex. Eventually when they get it to the producers they’re basically like ‘yeah of course it has gay sex in it, it’s the writers raw talent, and we just cut it down for the release.’
I have several ex-girlfriends that have turned out to be much better platonic friends, rather than romantic partners. My wife is actually friends with several of my ex's, mostly because we all like the same music and attend each other's events. Friendship is a beautiful thing, and love is complex with endless possibilities. This video was actually an amazing interpretation that added an undertone to the narrative presented. I think I love 2F2F even more now.
I don't like queerbaiting or queercoding, but it sure makes for some interesting subtext reading that helps recontextualize and improve, in many cases, mediocre movies or shows. On one hand I wish movies dare to be more open about queer relationships and accept the fact that a couple of bi men can lead a car based franchise without losing its hyper-masculinity, but on the other hand, I don't want to lose the creativity of subtext in how much they can get away with it. Great video!
Queer coding is when characters/situation is interpreted as queer without any explicit statement in the media. On one hand, sometimes it's unintentional by creators, but other times creators heavily hint at queerness without ever confirming it so they can attract queer viewers without jeopardizing cis-het audience (hence the original commenter disliking queerbaiting).
Legit question... Did this movie really awaken them feelings in you? b/c I was 15 when this came out, and that year would be my first year being openly as bi with anyone, even myself... The first time I admitted to myself I was bi was July of that year. 20 days before my birthday... twenty days of being me to myself before I told my only close friend of that time... and a bit over a month after seeing this movie in theaters. I think this movie might have helped me without me ever even recognizing it.
Congratulations on finding the strength to be honest with who you are, even if it was an admittedly shitty movie from the 2000s that was only kinda about cars that caused the realization.
@@bsti112590 well there was a car in every scene that could fit one in the background of the intense flirting and sexual tension the movie was designed around
I’m 2:38 seconds in. To this DAY, I know that these characters are gay. I felt it as a child. I watched and asked my CHRISTIAN mother…do they like each other? All she could say was “maybe?”
Your excitement for this bi love story is really infectious. I couldn't help but smile the entire time watching this and listening to you talk about it
The first time I watched this movie I was underwhelmed by how weak the story was and didn’t think the friendship plot was very thought out, but never considered they might be former lovers. It recontextualizes all of the ridiculous scenes of the two fighting and bickering when you see it through the lenses of a long gone heartbreak. I cannot wait to rewatch it with this in mind at some point while binging all the movies
Legit good review. Keep in mind that this film came out in 2003, and I wouldn't be surprised if this was a genuine sub-plot of this film, but it wouldn't fly in theaters due to various political reasons. If anything, I'm impressed at how subtle the dialog is compared to how hetrosexually charged the first film was, and the following films afterwords. But sadly, these aspects of the film probably were missed by the target audience it was shooting for, since the franchise itself has about the intellectual depth of a puddle, at best.
@@albinwallen634 Granted, but I doubt the director of "Boyz n the Hood" and "Hustle & Flow" would have resisted the temptation to hide a sub-plot within a "guaranteed-to-be-made" sequel movie.
As a bi fast saga fan, I loved this! I totally see it even though it's not canon, the subtext was completely there. I have headcanons for each of the characters but I was scared to say anything about them because of the rather mainly heterosexual nature of the fandom but I loved this!!
Yes? Spot on but Brian's heart is really with Dom as they drive off in the sunset in the last scene together, Brian and Dom knowing that their love for each other should remain secret as they live alternative heterosexual lives, Brian with Mia who loves Brian regardless denying the signs that she's with a gay man and Dom being with a closeted Lesbian
As straight man who grew up watching these movies, reading the title, I was like "no way don't try and pigeon hole in some bi subtext" 10 minutes in, I'm convinced and it totally makes the movie better lol

as a car enthusiast, this is just really the representation us car people need.

We need a whole series of “this movie/show is gay”. I suggest Falcon and Winter Soldier next
Example: Commentary youtubers who post videos titled "This is the dumbest/weirdest movie of all time" every week.
there is a series called "are they gay" it was pretty entertaining but the stretches were getting pretty ridiculous
this needs ro happen lol
Nightmare on Elm Street part 2 is a strong candidate imo.
11:03 "If I can't have you, then I'm going to get everyone else" is the most deeply relatable bisexual emotion.
This video is godly and I come back to it every few months

Hmmmm 🤔
Yes thank you Ben for literally rewriting my childhood.
2 Fast 2 Furious does also genuinely sound like a porn parody
Brian apparently has a thing for bald men
He has a type. Can you blame him. lol 😂
I wasn't expecting a gay reading of a fast and furious movie to actually make this much sense, but now that I've heard all this, I ship it.
@JOSHUA MILLER literally 😂😂
Queer Coding?

The energy in ur commentary during all this is nothing short of brilliant
Something about Ben calling the first movie 1 Fast 1 Furious made me giggle.
It seems so fake and played up to think “oh these guys are just friends” but the writers really knew what they were doing with this one

Yk that this is satire
@@albinwallen634 Granted, but I doubt the director of "Boyz n the Hood" and "Hustle & Flow" would have resisted the temptation to hide a sub-plot within a "guaranteed-to-be-made" sequel movie.
